Ok, got to the video with some tasty home brew... great stuff! It warms my heart to see that I'm not the only one out there struggling with upgrade compatibility, and running into snags along the way. I hope it works well on the trail. That old BB was nasty! That feeling under your feet was metal literally being ground to bits. While I still use a square taper BB on one of my older bikes, and it works fine, those new hollow BB are truly the way to go. Hope you had a fine St. Patrick's day!
11:30 I recommend to get a big torque wrench, and get BB tool sockets.also don't use the torque wrench to undo it, use a breaker bar or a ratchet wrench.
Quality non sealed square taper bbs do have the added benefit of being able to repack the grease VS sealed which are mostly just replaceble (it is possible to regrease it just time effort and a vice.)
I had a similar BB failure before I put an ixf crankset on my bike. I found out the hard way that mud was getting in from the slot on the back of the seatpost and filling my original unsealed bearings with crap.
Funny! My 1970's era Vista Silver Shadow and my 1980's custom Roberts racing bike both had that type of square tapered bottom bracket. I used to remove them regularly and repack them with grease. I bought some very thick automotive grease for re-greasing those. Never had any issues with them. Many times, we used bearings without the metal case. You need a few more ball bearings but don't have to worry about that extra metal. The sealed bearings or hollow bottom brackets are better, but these square tapered brackets can hold up well. They just require more maintenance (especially if you ride in mud, snow, water, etc)
Completely understand, but time consuming. And Imma guess your bikes that were older and custom builds probably had better materials that were used as well. Did they have options like hollow back then?
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS True, better materials back then. Most things were built here or in countries that maintained good quality standards. Not a lot of plastic used back then either. Back then, square tapered was the only game in town unless you had one of the cheap steel cranks.

Lmao to many suggestive comments for me to fill all the holes. The one at 12:00 really got things flowing 😆. They are definitely wrong for that bottom bracket! Look like it was chillaxing in the pond
can you use chainring spacers? you should use chainring spacers to get correct chain line. I don't have to deal with this with direct mount chainrings and crank sets.
Not sure if that bike has one of two "standards" for frame BB, but if it's 73mm, it's one spacer on right. If it's 68mm it's 2 spacers on right, and one on left. Should not need that telescoping feature unless it is some weird measurement?
this is unacceptable. I prefer direct mount chainrings, no dealing with bent spider and buying new cranks, cus spider bent or cracked. and if you want a spider, you can use one, and can replace it instead of a whole crankset or crank arm. I've only used direct mount chainrings over the past few years.
Man if we happen to film something using it then yes. There is a cover on the shifter, unscrew it and be sure to shift up or down to see the end in the shifter.
1:30 there's your problem, bearings are on backwards. Did you ever check the bearing free play? You can't trust Walmart to setup your bike. For the kids at home, to check free play in any bottom bracket: Put bike on ground, pedal forward to tension chain slightly, push the 2 pedals towards each other these pull them away. If there's any clunk clunk or noticeable movement your BB is loose. If its a sealed unit the bearings are clapped. When riding you will feel a clunk exactly when the pedal is at the top of the stroke for a millisecond. 9:16 that might be a feature but its not a good one. There's meant to be a rigid crush tube in between the 2 bearings.
That bottom bracket was ruined! I've never seen anything quite like that 😯. I'm an oval chainring fan, thanks to your recommendation I got one and despite my scepticism I like them. I don't know what it is, they just feel a little more efficient, whether they are or not I don't know. Very funny video, full of innuendos 😂😂 Happy belated Paddy's day ☘️🍻 Take care gents 🍺👍😎

The jgbike chainrings that I've been using havent had the lips on them even with my 32t oval. So that could help with the chain line Also just find a cheap air impact since you guys already have a compressor!
I want to switch from a freewheel to a cassette on my ardor and have no idea how to go about it. Awesome video guys so I basically broke the crank shaft or whatever on my bike and decided to take it to a bike shop…. They said like everyone does that my bike is incredibly rare to come by these days and would be pretty much impossible to replace within even a year possibly two at this point the way things are…. They also said it’s not made to be ridden like a powerhouse like me ha ha ha…. So I decided to just keep it there for the week and let them work on it they’re basically rebuilding everything on it and making new even new tubes and tires the whole 9 yards cleaning it up for 200 bucks…. They said it should last me another five or six years easily even with the way that we ride…. I felt like that was a pretty good deal and will probably do a follow up video on it…. As far as Jack’s bike he could probably get another year out of it but he hasn’t decided yet…. I can’t decide if he wants to stay with a mountain bike kind of fat bike thing or go over to a beach cruiser type of thing like I have…. We’re gonna look more when we go to pick mine up this weekend….. wish you guys lived closer we would’ve brought our bikes to you guys…. But it’s pretty slim pickings around these parts….. what there is to choose from is incredibly competitive…. Pamela is really lucky she got her bike last year for what she did there’s like nothing like that available in fact we looked her bike up online and they’re asking almost $100 more for it online right now
Yeah man, I wished we lived closer as well. It sounds like the shop is giving you a decent deal on all that work. The way Jack is growing who knows what he will be riding by mid summer. We are glad Pamela is enjoying her bike and we are looking forward to some bike riding videos from y'all this year. We are absolutely slammed with our Jiu-Jitsu and the channel plus Jeremiah's part time job. We were hoping to possibly make a rode trip up that way this summer, but now we are worried about time and gas prices. Hopefully things get back to normal soon. Thanks for all the support guys.👍👍
Yes. We have a install video and a review video I believe. Just look at our Malus/Fat bike playlist and you should find them. Remember to use timestamps located in the description if you want to skip the nonsense.
I have this bike and the bottom bracket is making creak and clank noises. But I want to replace it with square tapper. Do you know the size of the spindle? Thank you for all the great content guys!
Yep. That's exactly why we prefer the sealed cartridge bb if you are going to stay with square tapered. The sealed bb that we were showing is the original one out of our GT, and it still works good.😉 It's always good to hear from you bud!
Thanks for the scientific explanation on sealed vs loose ball bearing bottom brackets. 🤣 Do you prefer internal or external bottom brackets? A little disappointed that one of you was not dressed up as a leprechaun.
Yes boys! Great video once again and Happy Friyay! Man that bottom bracket was f#&ked up. Just curious was there any play on the cranks because of the damage? Have an awesome weekend boys 🍻
Happy belated St Paddy’s 🍻 I know you don’t recommend things according to Wolfman…but any thoughts/comments (performance or installation) on any of the crankset upgrades you have done? IXF, X6, SRAM, etc? Looking to upgrade mine and like direct mount and debating X6 or maybe spend some more on Deore
Good question, now ixf cranksets and ones just like it are easy to install, parts availability is great and tools to install are. Heap as well. Sram (higher end) does have a few more options to adjust alignment without the use of spacers but you need a special bb tool to tighten. Direct mount is nice and clean, but one spot to mount the chainring....All in all looks and feel.....I like direct, toughness and expense I like IXF, flashy but quality Sram.
Mine seized up the other day from the winter cold in Virginia. It's now grinding and something is clanking inside the bracket when I pedal...think the bearings have given out. It's 6 months old. It's exactly the same problem as you described. Should I get it repaired at a bike shop....or is it more cost effective to buy parts and do it myself.
Hey brother, thanks for the comment. Now regarding the question...It's always nice to learn your bike so if it were me I would do it myself, do keep in mind though tools and parts it's gonna be about a 100 dollar endeavor and time. May be a great learning experience!! Good luck and let us know if you need some links for tools, or check the videos description 😀
Like I said in the Head bike comment I made, I was wrong. I didn't think it through and think about TRUE cheapo cup and bearing. I feel like this was directed squarely at me =) and rightfully so. A sealed bottom bracket is a feature to be excited about. I was wrong =)
Well thank you for sticking around and really it helped us clear some stuff up in the long run. Thank you for admitting it but there have been a few along the way who have been confused as to why we call it a feature. Thank you for the comment and so glad you watched! 😊 Much love Scott, see ya Tuesday man.
I am not a fan of integrated spider on cranks, cus I could bend it, of course how robust they are depends n material and design. but I've bent Shimano m552 crank spider just by riding. I prefer direct mounted, and if bolt mount is needed you could use a attachable spider, so ruining the spider won't mean new cranks, just a cheap spider.
Certified Bike Tech here, regarding the chain alignment... That SRAM crankset is clearly designed for a triple ring setup, thus the proper chain alignment would be set to the middle ring, so the reason why the alignment is so poor is because you have the ring in the wrong position. It needs to go where a middle or 2nd chainring would go. Obviously the chainring you chose was not compatible with that crankarm. Also, 3 ring cranks are designed to be much closer to the frame to accommodate usable alignment with all 3 rings, thus the reason why you had to space the BB so far out to clear the frame. A 3 ring crankset (as nice as that SRAM is) was a poor choice for a frame that is designed for a 1x drivetrain.
I had to use an impact drill with the BB extractor bit to get the BB off my GT Aggressor Pro, i couldn't believe how tight it was on there from the factory. The crank arms came off fine but man, that screw/nut thingamajig that screws onto the BB was a beast. Also those grips are scheduled for delivery Tuesday via UPS Surepost, hopefully they match the color on this bike and I'll send you an updated pic of my bike too.
Sounds good brother! I have to rewatch but I feel I used a flathead to remove mine on the GT?? Maybe not but an impact is a great tool!! LOL Thanks Non Legit
Who doesnt like a clean hole lol just replaced the bottom bracket on my fuji bc it was driving me crazy with the noise but my hole wasnt that dirty lol little water and mud LMAO
9:49 don't lube threads, use antisieze. Just because you've seen a yt builder do it doesn't mean they know what they're doing. Grease will stop water (getting out, is will trap it in there. The seat post is an injection port right to the BB, water crossings will fill the BB up) Nickel/copper anti sieze will stop the threads galling. Especially as you just installed aluminium cups into an aluminium frame (similar metals love to stick)
That BB was way too loose. Scares me for when I remove the BB on my Dolomite ALX. Fortunately the BB will be replaced by a mid-drive. Is that actually called a "telescoping BB"? I've always heard external bearing BB🤷♂. Definitely make sure that hole is clean, & lube before screwing. Wait, what channel am I watching? I'm sorry but I don't think it's a good idea to wack your tool with a hammer. Don't take this personally but that chainline SUCKS, unless you only ride downhill. I'd be scared of snapping the chain climbing in 1st gear.
LOL Man we try not to take anything personal!! 🤣 We feel ya, and no wracking of the tool....Got It!!! Now not called a telescoping bb thay was LOL me, idk maybe type it in and see???
Don't get me wrong I like my new Mongoose Ardor unfortunately I just had a head on head collision with another bicycle list today he was knocked out cold I got up and kept it moving but my front wheel was snaked! I straightened it out the best I could and kept it moving. Well homeboy was laid out on the ground passed out snoring ko'd by my forehead! Don't get me wrong that shit hurt but it is what it is. I said you all right and he was snoring I wasn't waiting around I took off. Got to get that wheel straight again that's unbelievable $350 Mongoose or door now I got to pay $40 one people said $150 for a whole new rim. Why you just can't re-Tru the wheel through adjusting the spokes. Homeboy wants to sell me $150 tire rim that don't match I wanted to match mine are cool mine say compass on them and white lettering it's dope. An element black wheels black on black black spokes are dope with the Chrome screws. Just a little disappointed that it's a 7 speed cuz you definitely need a few more gears higher. Maybe I'll look into a front derailer and new sprocket system hopefully won't have to replace the crank I really don't want to dump a ton of money into this cheap bike which I'll probably end up crashing again cuz these cars are vicious out there ain't caren about looking for bicyclist and or motorcyclist. But definitely bicyclists gets it worse cuz were silent! I don't want to die. LOL but what can I do to upgrade the speeds do I have to change the rear disc to more sprockets cassette? I've been out of the bicycle game for a minute I should be pretty handy with working on these bikes so nowhere near as good as y'all but I am mechanically inclined and any advice would be much appreciated. I just want to know how to get more speed out of this thing put in a bigger front sprocket and at the railer with another front sprocket a bigger one??

I think with some chainring spacers you might be able to mount that ring on the inside... No guarantee though lol
Completely feel ya, I think that may be a viable option for a good rig up job!
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS Exactly what I did with my new build, 2mm spacers from eBay
I still have the original bottom bracket on my gt after 2+ years 😂
Yep. That's exactly why we prefer the sealed cartridge bb if you are going to stay with square tapered. The sealed bb that we were showing is the original one out of our GT, and it still works good.😉
It's always good to hear from you bud!
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS yep haven’t commented in a while.Just got my new bike (polygon siskiu d7) and it’s crazy how nice a full suspension is
Dude, 5mm is 3/16 of an inch. That's not tiny... Makes a difference on the shaft, I mean crank axle
Well Chuck U, when I said hair I meant long ways!😜😜😜
Its called a Spindle!!!!!!!😅😅😅
Thanks for the scientific explanation on sealed vs loose ball bearing bottom brackets. 🤣 Do you prefer internal or external bottom brackets?
A little disappointed that one of you was not dressed up as a leprechaun.
EXTERNAL!! LOL And man we really missed the boat on the one, 🍀🍀🍀😳 DAMN!
I use a Dewalt 1/2" impact all the time on my bikes!
LOL Man we need to invest!!
i run on high gear on my 3 crank is there any way to get large gear for single chain ring
I believe they sell a 36 T
my knees agree with your dad. they are not overrated.😀
😂😂🤫
Yes boys! Great video once again and Happy Friyay!
Man that bottom bracket was f#&ked up. Just curious was there any play on the cranks because of the damage? Have an awesome weekend boys 🍻
Thans brother, and no play?? CRAZY HUH!?!?
That's a GXP crankset. Think you may have fitted a 24mm axle BB and not a 24/22mm BB
May just have to, it was the bb Berserker sent with it, but maybe we do need to switch it out. Thanks for the input Dave
Can u use the Sram AXS? will it still be off alignment?
I like direct mount as well👍👍👍
Certified Bike Tech here, regarding the chain alignment...
Well appreciate the insight 👍
The middle Gear of a Nine speed is fifth Gear. Youll have four on either side :)
🤦♂️🤫🙏
Who doesnt like a clean hole lol just replaced the bottom bracket on my fuji bc it was driving me crazy with the noise but my hole wasnt that dirty lol little water and mud LMAO
HA ha man hate when it gets muddy!! 😆 Glad you replaced it brother! Thanks for the comment! YOU KNOW!!!
9:49 don't lube threads, use antisieze. Just because you've seen a yt builder do it doesn't mean they know what they're doing.
Grease will stop water (getting out, is will trap it in there. The seat post is an injection port right to the BB, water crossings will fill the BB up)
Nickel/copper anti sieze will stop the threads galling. Especially as you just installed aluminium cups into an aluminium frame (similar metals love to stick)
Gotcha, appreciate the input.
7:29 is what puberty feels like
🤣🤣🤣
bottom brackets need a sleeve, to block water and dirt, from contaminating it, but this BB did not have that so the dirt resulted in premature wear.
👍
Hype
🏆🥇👍Dude you are on🔥
Don't get me wrong I like my new Mongoose Ardor unfortunately I just had a head on head collision with another bicycle list today he was knocked out cold I got up and kept it moving but my front wheel was snaked!
Lol that intro
Man the patrons get to see an unedited extended clip!! You can only imagine!! LOL
Brake cleaner straps paint
It cleans up grease and grime pretty good too.
File those lips down evenly and it will fit. I used a hand file.
Gotcha! Need to do that, just need to be sure and not get all excited and WONKY!😂😂🙏
Those cheap open bearing bottom brackets won't last long. Y'all were lucky. They can't take a beating.
Man I cannot believe it stayed somewhat on place!! I could feel something wrong but damn! LOL Must have been that Lizard Trail
I think Wolfman is right, the alignment is off! Should be 50 mm center of frame to center of drive sprocket
Little too much math! LOL Yes we my go back and take a look.
I dont play with cheep bikes.and dont play with hilbilly mecanicks. Holyshit this just blows more the my mind. 🤯 fine to se u lube shit now.
Oval with no chain ring guard going to drop of. ! Sirkel on no stress!! Can run the guard with the safety but no nead.
Lube it up son!
Cranks have a spindle not a shaft!! Jeez. Crank shafts are on cars, I think.
DEFINITION POLICE!!😂😂
SPINDLE: a straight spike to spin fibers into yarn. (Wikapedia)
SHAFT: A shaft is a rotating machine element, usually circular in cross section, which is used to transmit power from one part to another. (Wikipedia)
SO TAKE THAT GRIPTION MAN!!😂😂😂💪
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS call a bike shop and ask for a square taper crank shaft and I bet they will laugh at you and tell you to call Auto Zone!😅😅😅😅
Omg I cracked myself up with that one!
That bottom bracket done messed itself 🤢
🤣🤣 it did!! LOL Never complained either!!
So bezerker sends you all the parts ? Can you hook me up with Bezerker? 😂
I know this was meant as a joke, but in all seriousness Berserker definitely shows a lot of support for the channel. We put about 50 hours a week each into this channel March through October and about 25 hours a week each November through February. I think Berserker has an appreciation for our efforts and the content that we provide. We are definitely lucky that he found us and decided to show so much support. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Totally f**ked up chain line
Never put your crank set into a dirty hole 🕳.
🙏 Hope you hit that like👍
Wrestling :)
First maybe?
I'm just getting this, but I think you were 🥈👍🤣
Jeremiah, you have to wear gloves, brother.
those cheapo bottom brackets are a scourge. The world would be better if they just spent the extra $3 for a sealed bb.
Not sure if their cost difference is only $3 dollars, but it would be nice if the sealed bb was the lowest option for the industry.
