I was thinking of buying a whole house carbon unit with a manual backwash valve to avoid any mechanical or electrical problems in the future. How often do they need to be backwashed on city water? Would it correlate with a softener or could the interval be longer?

Since you would be backflushing/backwashing, where would the backflow preventer (RPZ) be installed?
For iron filtering in that particular tank. How much filter media is used in cu/ft please? Does the media fill the tank about 2/3 full?

If you wanted to go the manual route, you would need to manually backwash every 10-14 days with city water.
