Despite a lot of people saying this feels like something belonging in the Old West, or the soundtrack to it, what this puts me most in mind of is the original 'Tristram' track from Diablo. Same brooding atmosphere, same feeling of something being amiss. I absolutely love this and would love to hear more like it.
That’s the first thought I had when I heard it! I’ve got countless hours listening to the Tristram music, still play D1 from time to time. Think I’ll stay a while and listen 😁
Wow such an unexpected and obscure reference but so spot on! It was nagging at the corner of my brain but I couldn’t place the familiar feeling. I was scanning the comments and all that popped out at me was ‘Tristram’ whoa Tristram Blues man you have something here!

This guy is rad! I've been a musician most of my life and he's one of my guilty pleasures. I'm a classically-trained trombonist and percussionist but whenever I hear this guy play it's like he speaks to my soul and I get instantly transported back to whenever this time should have been even if it was just a few days ago...
I consider myself very fortunate indeed that I got to see Leonard shortly before he died. Without a doubt the best performance I have ever seen. Class all the way. I often judge a singer by how well they perform this song. Now I might be judging musicians the same way. Justin you are top of the class.
Truly amazing! Justin, you’re like an artist with a brush to a canvas; the brush strokes being each note. Always so great to hear your ‘painting’ in music!
I can't even count how many times I've come back to this. I don't know how to describe it, don't know what genre it falls in - don't care either. Just know I'll be back again
Love that dark haunting tone!!!!! Very mysterious and beautiful!!!!😎🤘🍻 Baritone guitar is one of my favorite tones This song is a must for the next bootlegger volume!!!!
I found so much love and beauty in your lap steel guitar I'm sharing with a family member who plays in a Lil bluegrass band - I believe you have a lot of love to share. Thank you you have beauty in your soul ❤️ 😘 peace & light ✨️
Right? For me it's evoking a very specific scene, the feeling is one of foreboding but resignation and determination. Something bad is coming, but it's too late to run. All you can do is turn to face it, even if it requires every last bit of your bag of tricks - whether you said you'd ever use them again or not.
hey Justin, would you be willing to make a video of your progress over the years of playing guitar, I think it would be interesting to see. You could include, who inspired you, did you go to any music schools, how you learnt how to play as well as you do etc. I think it would be a great video.
Wow. Justin is an amazing player and an expert at letting the instrument play what it wants. Just a few minutes of tinkering around and he could play something cool on a stick, rock, and a piece of fishin line. I believe instruments can inspire players in certain directions and he reads em like a book.
I am from Greenland, that music style or the sound have i never heard whole my life. I must say that gives me goosebumps. It kind of gives me electricity in muscles or something like that. What a beautiful sound
Somebody in the void, this void of somebody, maybe it's Ghosts.....but the sound is on the hands, hands to the earth, voices to the air...... Strange but true Thanks Justin
I thought the "built by Magician" was in reference to the guy's skill. Then find out that yes it was that, but he's also a legit magician. Awesome all the way around.
I’m writing this on my 32nd bday and til this day, I feel if you’ve never been to “The Deep South,” there is an aspect and ambiance of this style of music and storytelling that you’ll never forget. This reminds me of the stormy seasons at the top of the boot in the Louisiana heat just waiting until class let out and the bar opened; the south in the summer brought out a different type of lady and gentleman.
Lot of people saying this reminds them of music you'd hear in a western during a shoot out. I can see that- maybe a Quinton Tarantino western, but my first thought was southern gothic, more along the lines of "True Blood", but either way- very cool sound.
A beautiful sound JJ , Charles Atchison new what he was doing when he had you in mind for this lap steel guitar . All is missing is the haunted house!!! Glad you showed, told how this was made ,truly has a different "voice" with the baritone vibe, maybe a lap steel in the background and this playing out front would help it achieve even another level ? beautiful as always! This sort of eerie westernesque music is very underrated. I love this kind of sound, and I really wish someone would take a crack at some western themed macabre on the big screen. It wouldn't need to be anything complex, something as simple as a rancher moving into an old haunted house in the mid 1800s.

Just like your other songs, this sounds fantastic Justin. If it interest you, I would love to hear a song by the Black Crows for one of your future songs.
Justin, do you think you could do a tenor ukulele video someday? I ve been fallowing you for a long time and i have learnt a lot from your skills and arts. Seeing you play the blues on a uke could be enlightening and nurturing for my very rudimentary skills. Cheers!
I LOVE THIS SOUND! So much mood & emotion! You need to replace the annoying predictable crap heard in so many films. This made me think of the "The Last Of Us" game soundtrack even though I haven't ever player it. My big brother is "guitarist extraordinar" Wayne Perkins from Alabama, also known as the White Wailer from his recordings with Bob Marley. He has a really long, long list of people he had the grace to play with from the Stones to Joni Mitchell. You really have mad skills, so glad you turned up in my list! 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸
You should definitely check out Gustavo Santaolalla's other stuff, it is really really cool. The last of us is definitely what I thought of, very zombie-game-esque. Little bit of left for dead in there too.
@Justin Johnson I rather would spend money on a concert ticket..But you aren't touring through Switzerland or the nearby countries. And a Flightticket to the US is above my budget. Justin makes guitars happy for the music they make. Hope somebody getting this down. A guitar whisper of highest level. Gives me chills and tears.
I think I may be legitimately in love with this instrument. What an incredible sound!
It's more amplifiers and effects than the instrument. Put some tension on a wire and add pickup, you have a slide guitar.
