The hurdy gurdy must have been a masterpiece of medieval engineering. I can imagine them taking the same care of an instrument like this as we would a priceless guitar, or set of drums.
You'd be surprised to hear that after a brief period of popularity with rich folk for being a masterpiece of engineering, I read somewhere that these instruments had a bad reputation because homeless prostitutes would often play them for cash because they were easy to learn.
In the beginning it was. But then it became a very common instrument and even beggars could afford one. That's when it changed from a sophisticated instrument for the nobility and clergy to a common instrument for the lower classes.
@@yarpenzigrin1893 But it did resurge in the 16th and 17th centuries there for a while iirc
Idk about you but I spend most of my time near my drum set beating them to death
@@RomeDrori They are designed to be hit tho
It's like if bagpipes and a violin fused with an accordion.
I love it. Thank you for sharing your skill with this instrument with the world.
And a bass
im sure if those instruments were played together someone will say "wow it sounds like a hurdy gurdy"
I think this is the exact way to describe a hurdy gurdy tbh
i just found out about this instrument today, and i immediately thought its just a stringed version of the bagpipe
@@ayumuchan3541 for the longest time, I assumed Patty Gurdy had those instruments in her songs, not that it was this single, beautiful creature.
I’m now in love with it.
UGears has a hurdy-gurdy model
This sounds like music being played during the beginning of a movie, telling you about past events leading up to the story in the film. I can imagine a narrator telling the story with this playing.
Backstory music
The fallen leaves tell a story...
Let me tell you about Stormcrow people called him Gandalf.....
As the snow falls, cast white flakes against the grey sky, a lone figure trudges on. Through freezing mud and mire, to reach the hearth of his heart's desire. The fell shadows swaying, the wind shifting the pines. The lone wolf and it's crying. Still our hero marches on. Freezing fingers that no gauntlets could keep warm from winter's cold biting maw. He keeps on carrying what little he has to keep him warm: the fire inside & strength of his limbs are all that remain to move the metal, the weight of war, the cold, hard steel of a knight's attire. The ember inside, his heart's desire,...
That or like an overhead view of the aftermath of battle
A young man told his mother
'By this blade I'll prove my worth
I'll leave my mark upon this world'
His blade broke far before his dream
Who lies beside him in the snow
No one remembered how he screamed
For a mother who will never know
Fuck, this hits deep
These words give me such deep motivation to go out and find something to fight for, you have NO IDEA!
@@destructiveforce3599
Neither do you, if you think that's a good thing.
Live by the sword, die by the sword.
Protect what you have, and if that means that no fights come to glorify you, that is a good thing.
No need to actively seek to deny mothers of their children.

This makes me feel nostalgia for a time that never happened, on a land that never existed, of a life never lived
Haunting and beautiful. Never heard a "hurdy-gurdy" before. Almost deserves a more dignified name. Love it.
I knew of the name of the instrument long before I ever heard it, and assumed it was pretty raucous and lame, judging from the name. Then I heard it played and I was entranced, it is an exquisite instrument deserving of a much more dignified name.
It's called the hurdy gurdy because the wheel will warp over time making a consistent sound impossible. And they usually don't sound this good, they usually squeak and squawk.
@@jimmyjoe8225 Thanks for the warning. I was going to sell everything I own, drop out of society and devote my life to mastering the Hurdy-Gurdy.

Colonel Kurtz. One way to keep "undesireable" people from settling in your neighborhood would be to have several all cranking out different tunes at 3:44 a m. Ha, ha!

Aye. We came here as farmers. We leave this land as warriors. This is our home. We will never give it up. To this ground, I lay my feet,, my plow and my sword. And one day, me. I stand until I sleep, forever more. This, is my home.
I lived in a house with a man who played bagpipes and the hurdy gurdy. His wife played and sang everything else, the kids and cats ran around underfoot, and the other tenant was a bagpipe maker. You were really careful where you sat, but otherwise it was a happy time and place. This is much more serious than we ever got, and this ... pipe organ with strings ... is magnificent. Thank you for the video and the memories.

And they’re watching from the spirit world 😊👏🏻🥰‼️
I see it clear as day, a heavily cloaked stranger sits atop a tall horse. Its mane, and his cloak billow effortlessly on the wind as he stares silently across the tundra deserted but for a distant, broken tower. I love how music evokes imagery.
Excellent as always. Someday I will buy one of these. As a bass player, I can really appreciate the time and effort it takes to play these arrangements. Thank you for sharing!
A warning from one "want to play a Hurdy Hurdy" to another. They are absurdly expensive and the makers are very rare. But I hope that you find one that is perfect for you.
@@sootamander4398 Advice from one Hurdy Gurdy player to any aspiring ones: They are actually very fairly priced for the amount of work and labor that goes into them. Most HG makers work for a slave wage and do it for the love of the instrument.
You can get a good starter model for as little as €800 these days, but you must practice caution to not be taken in by the many scams on Etsy and eBay. The most expensive ones may reach €10-15,000 or nore but a violin or piano of comparable quality would cost multiples of that.
All things considered, the Gurdy is not "absurdly expensive" at all.
@@FitZhurdygurdy the only truly trustworthy people that I found are altar wind. If you know of any others I would love to hear about it. Thank you for the advice.
@@sootamander4398 I can assure you Altarwind are not that. They make very poor quality Gurdies and the price is shocking, you can get a far better instrument for half the cost of most of their models. George and Anwyn are lovely people but their Gurdies are very roughly thrown together and they refuse any advice on improving them. They will use bits of drawer handle as cranks, interior parts may be duct-taped in place, the keybox construction makes it difficult to play fluidly, the materials and woodworking are not instrument-gradeand they have a knack for claiming to be the inventors of several features that have been in existence since the 18th century.
Much better options would be Dakota Strings (US based, new to the scene), and a plethora of European makers like Kerboeuf, Boudet, Chris & Bi Allen, Pouzadoux, MM Instruments, Nerdy Gurdy to name but a few. All of these makers have quality instruments available for between $800 and $3000 and you will be guaranteed something that will work properly and last a lifetime.
@@FitZhurdygurdy thank you for the help friend
this instrument is underrated and sadly a bit too obscure. It's sound evokes such an ethereal context - out of time, out one's cureent reality and being thrust into another
otherworldly - but not in a pop scifi sense of otherworldly, but instead a transcendent otherworldly
Not to much music gives me chills anymore but this does as soon as i hear the first minute. It just makes me feel like im falling back in time to past lives.
It's nice to know some people still sing our songs, so that we aren't forgotten.
Aaaah so THIS is a hurdy-gurdy! Cool, haunting pretty and rustic all in one sound!
“To die with dissatisfaction is to live with no satisfaction”
I was trying to find inspiration for a new character I've made and this hits perfectly. It sounds like what plays when someone tells a story at the campfire
The entire universe would be diminished if there weren't people like you to share these kinds of experiences with people like us. I am so grateful to you for this. Thank you!
To play such a fine instrument as good as Andrey & many other do must take years of practice & dedication & to remember so many tunes is just amazing. The person who designed this fine sounding instrument must have been a musical & sound genius.
I'm a gurdy player and gurdies are unique in that they're kind of a bastardization of a bunch of different instruments. I'm not sure who Andrey's luthier is but they all produce instruments that have an incredibly unique sound.
So beautiful!💖💖 I have spent 30 years involved in medieval history, and this is my favorite instrument. It takes me away from here, into the fields and woods, to happy memories.
Mistic, hypnotic and evocative, I coukd keep listening to it for a long while.
These things are amazing. Why on earth don't we see more of these?
because you can't just pick it up and play it. as far as I understand it requires a firm grasp of the engineering behind it
Also it's the name, it just sounds like a joke

You sir make my soul weep with this beautiful ballad. Very good.
The hurdy gurdy is such a unique instrument that has a sound all its own. That is why i love the sound of it. Its as its narrating the past and telling a story while telling the harsh truth that life sometimes brings. Sounds beautiful and rough at the same time.
We who know, know what is coming. And we are scattered, but fierce and ready. Always.
I made some lyrics, hope y’all like them!
There was a king
Come from a distant land
He formed the earth
Using his mighty hands
He was a warrior
Feared not beast nor devil
He stood above all
Who heard the ravens call
There was a king
Borne from the blood of gods
He fought for man
And ary noble cause
He was a warrior
Feared not beast nor devil
He stood above all
Who heard the ravens call
He was a warrior
He was a ruler
He fought for justice
And ary noble cause
He bore much power
None could devour
This shining warrior
Who wore the blood of gods
He was a warrior
Feared not beast nor devil
He stood above all
Who heard the ravens call
He who stood above all
Within the ravens call
Was destined to fall
To neither devil beast nor man
He who stood above all
Within the ravens call
Was destined to fall
To the might of godly hands
There was a god
Who’s anger seethed in flame
His fury spawned
At mention of the kings name
He burned in hatred
His honor stained and faded
He wanted all
Who heard the ravens call
He faced the king
In battle cruel and cold
It mirrored those
Wars seen in years of olde
They both were warriors
Who feared not beast nor devil
They stood above all
Who heard the ravens call
And in this battle
The world unraveled
Cleaved in twain
Marked with godly blood and pain
The earth they ravaged
In battle savage
They could not foresee
What chaos came to be
These mighty warriors
Who feared not beast nor devil
Had destroyed all
Who heard the ravens call
Once the battle was done
Neither warrior had won
Instead they looked upon
The destruction they had wrought
They saw that their conflict
Was the cause for all this
They had ruined all
All who heard the ravens call
OOF this shit is cringe af

Sounds Galic. Wonderful and mysterious. Haunting, and ancient. Great video. Beautiful instrument.
I think Breton, Basque, Celtic, and Québécois music often includes hurdy-gurdy - but quicker paced? Blowzabella comes to mind.
Instruments, ideas, fashion, music, etc always will come and go. That's human nature. A lot of that returns most likely slightly different. It's not just history, culture seems to have a way of repeating itself as well. I for one am grateful for that and mad respect for those that pick these instruments back up and show the world what we have been missing.
Not the best example, but if you recall the "Gut Bucket" . The upsidedown washtub with a stick on top and one string,?
Les Claypool has A modern take on that. The Whamola. RUclips it, it's a wonderful instrumeng. He plays that quite a bit live. He loves it. I never would have put that connection together without Les Claypool reintroducing it.
Thanks Les!!!!
Love it, the sound and this unique instrument. God Bless!😇🙏
Medieval, evocative and nostalgic.
This could be played in many movies, at many different parts of each of them , but the song is about a dark path of a warrior. His life, entirely encapsuled in a piece of music that has not one mood, but many; change, flow, the way the instrument speaks creates shifts in mood and atmosphere.
Sehr Gefühlvoll und Mystisch, irgendwie Zeitlos klassisch , angenehm, irgendwie spür ich die wurzel meines Seins traumhaft, Danke für diese Chillige Musik❤

I literally heard this amazing man playing this amazing instrument less than 20 minutes ago, and I already feel my life changed! How wonderful! Others have observed the hurdy gurdy the music of several instruments and music of several cultures. I love it!!
Absolutely beautiful to say the least
I’ve always loved the sound of this instrument and I first saw it used by “The Decemberists“ for “Sons and Daughters”. I think that instrument is a key element to the beauty of that song. Beautifully played here too.
I have never seen a hurdy gurdy player use that back and forth motion on the handle, but it makes perfect sense. It's like he's bowing with the parchment wheel. I would love to know the brand of HG he is using.
His luthier is Wolfgang Weichselbaumer. Patty is also a huge fan of bowing :)
It’s incredibly common, baseline really .
As a trumpet and piano player I think they are switching the direction to separate the notes. With a trumpet, you can do it by using your tongue to stop the air, then pulling your tongue back in, with a tap-like motion. On piano since all the keys are already separate you just press them at different times. In musical terms, if you didn’t separate the notes, then you would be slurring them all together.
Hauntingly beautiful! Thank you for sharing this with the world.
Резонанс, эхо, протяжность, технологичность! Золотой век!
I can't even... it's just so beautiful. My two favorite instruments are bagpipes and violin. This has the drone of the bagpipes while having that sad, string sound of the violin. I just love it. Thank you so much for your art. It inspires me.

Thank you very much. This is just stunning. I feel like I’m hearing through the music the sound of an incredibly colossal, powerful, amazing legend. Love it
I absolutely love it ⚔️🧉🏹🛡🗡 thank you Sir.
I love the way you turn the handle back and forth in time with the music. I've never seen the hurdy gurdy played like that before, it's so much better than the usual continuous sound it produces. Where did you learn that please?
I have never heard it played that way either; adds a new dimension to the sound which can be a bit "mechanical" when all played in the same direction of rotation. Sounds similar to the Nickelharpa when played this way (unsurprisingly).
It’s a common method for those who affirm homosexual special rights.
But even today they don’t realise the local facts and collusion invalidated all who avoid reality of pronouns.
Aside from that, not all hurdy gurdy's can actually go backwards. This is probably also part of it maybe.
I've seen a fair few players use that technique; I'd imagine it's not particularly uncommon.
I have a hurdy gurdy and have been playing for about 8 years. I've never seen one played that way, either. Guess who's going to start working with this method? I love how the turning movements create a rhythm overlay to the music.
This piece is beautiful...really showcases the musical power of a hurdy gurdy!
The last dragon takes his stand, sword in hand and clad in the armor of friends and family almost forgotten. He never wanted to be where he is now, having hid from the ire of man for so long whilst searching for a home long lost. He had no quarrel, no ill will, nor malice. He was simply lost, and no guide would dare help him.
So with all other options exhausted, he stood his ground. Recreations of ancient and unknowable contraptions of the Drakes littered his den, but one was freshly set up in the center. He could not play, but he could build, and so he rebuilt an instrument whose melodies could reshape mountains, shake armies, and even rewrite history. While he could not resonate properly due to the very same plight that cast him into the world of man, he resonated enough to slaughter all those who challenged him and his right to leave them be.
The sound of this instrument and his skill to play such great sounding music never ceases to amaze me
