Ethan, I cannot thank you enough for this amazing gift you've given me. Your creativity and your filming/editing/composing abilities are just above and beyond amazing. I'm so lucky to have this film to reflect back on and to grow from. Thank you babe, love you so much!
8 years later and I am getting ready to walk the Bolder Boulder today (first time as a walker always run before.) It has been a rough couple of years following the loss of my Mom to Lewy Body Dementia but I am ready to rally and regain my health and fitness. And I decided to watch again this Ginger Runner film "Altering Expectations" to get the mojo I needed to be ok with being a walker, being grossly out of shape.....but dammit......on the path to get back the person I was. Both Kim's journey and Ethan's masterful capture of the emotions and the beauty just helps me feel "not alone", ok to "manage by expectations" and just enjoy the journey of getting back to eventually hiking then running the trails I love in Colorado. THANK YOU so much for this! I love Kim's smile at the end and I am holding in my own mind that I will be smiling when I finish walking 6.2 miles ....... knowing and feeling tired but my body is more capable than I give it credit for.
Kim you are an amazing beautiful young women and Ethan you are an excellent videographer. I have recently started to follow your Vlogs after watching Jamil's and Billy Yang's videos. You have become an inspiration to me. I hope your movie comes to San Diego. I started surfing in 1968. Started running in the 70s, Triathlons/Biathlons throughout the 80s. Mtn Biking thru the 90s and 2000s. Was a vegetarian for 10 years, always ate healthy. Then July 11, 2017, I suffered two heart attacks within three hours. One minor, the other massive. The doctor said it was the strength of my heart that kept me alive. The EMT said I should be sleeping in dirt!!! Today is 12 weeks after my surgery. I went back to work four weeks ago. I hike every weekend up to 13 miles on Saturday, then 6 miles of climbing on Sunday. I had Plantar Fasciitis for years but I think hiking steep trails stretched them out. So with your inspiration I plan to do the C2C hike this winter or early spring. Then some time start trail running again. I have tried running on a treadmill but the surgery just hasn't healed enough yet. But it felt great to run. Two times on the treadmill and two days after I paid the price. Running felt great, but the surgery really destroyed my chest. The heart was stronger but the chest plate, mussels take a little longer to heal. They tell me six months. So....... you never know!!! Live your life clean, but it may attack you too. I will be back hiking the PCT and trail running soon with your inspiration. Keep the videos coming.
Not a dry eye to be found. Seeing Kim push so hard, makes me want to push even more. To see what can be achieved. Not to give up, not to back down, to fight for every single step. To finish. Time not important, the experience is important. Well done Kim.
I've watched this film over 30 times. I've been nursing a knee injury so it's been elliptical work for me this year. This helps me emotional dig this out. "Can you make it the next 7" steals my heart every time.
This was the first film I watched that inspired me to inspire me to start chasing my 50k. I accomplished that dream and stepped away from running for some years due to life. I've returned to the video that got it all started to get the fire started again. Thank you, Ethan and Kim, this film is truly a gift.
Than you for making this fantastic movie - it captures the real spirit of ultra-running. My girls ( 8 & 12 yrs) were impressed and inspired, very few films follow a female runner.
Jeez I have tears in my eyes as I watch this. It's not about being the fastest, it's about you, and your body and mind. Your own challenge and your own experience, which is such a personal thing. Races like that break you down, throw you around a bit until you think you're finished and leave you feeling low........and then magically you are rebuilt and empowered and you DO IT!! Well done girl! You pushed hard and you did it. Kudos and keep going! :D x
Ethan, Kim, well done, both of you! Ethan, I like how you use the film to describe how a runner feels when anxiety and fear hit. But Kim you came out a new person when the wall is hit and being conquered. Call it 2nd wind, or whatever wind, you certainly showed us and reminded us what a true runner is. Thanks.
At times it was hard to watch, seeing someone that I don't actually know (but feel like I do!) struggle so hard to accomplish her dreams. Glad I watched and privileged to see some small part of your journey Kim! Thanks Ethan!
Well done...very well done. Thank you Kim for allowing Ethan to share your journey. That was awe inspiring and shows that we, as humans, can push ourselves beyond what we think we are capable of. I am about to embark on my first 50K at the Gorge Water Falls 50K next year this, film really inspires me. Ethan, what a great job on the filming, editing, music, and your devotion to Kim as she persevered through her challenge. Hats off to both of you...great job!
Inspiring. Im 30lbs over weight, struggling to jog run on the treadmill to get back in shape, and I'm watching this video. Hooked. And then she is asked if she can do the last leg. The moment she said yes, I literally teared up and cried a little on the treadmill. When she was vulnerable and hated that she was being filmed, the moment was raw and touching. Thank you for sharing this story.
This was gorgeous. Both the film itself and Kim's journey. I cheered and teared up through the run with her and that last bit, when she says it's not about the time,it's not about how long it took her... she did it. That is inspiring to a new runner like myself training for her first half marathon. Congrats to you Kim and well done on the film, Ethan.
Superb film and amazing journey. It's so nice to watch a running video where someone doesn't just sale through a big distance at ease, I've been so close to DNF's a few times and its always felt like I was the only one struggling, but everyone has their own battles. Kimberly, you rock, well done!
I relate to this so much. This gave me tears to watch. Hugs to you Kim. The year I did Oregon Coast 50K there was a storm warning and we weren't even really supposed to be running on the beach that morning. I heard later that the winds were like 40+ mph, and by the time I got to the first aid station I felt so incredibly sick... and then the puking started, and I couldn't shake it. I got to the second aid station white as a ghost and the volunteers made me sit down and told me I was done. That course and I have unsettled business! Your fighting spirit makes me so eager to sign up for this again and get my redemption! I was literally cheering and crying and cheering some more! Great video! Thank you guys for the amazing video! So inspired now.
This is my favorite video that I've watched of yours so far. I let my daughters watch. Kim is a great roll model of determination to two little girls aged 7 and 9.
Gutty race, Kim. Congratulations. I suspected that some of the best ultra stories are out there chasing cutoffs. Thanks, Ethan for sharing Kim's with us
Heard of this channel through Sage Canaday and am now watching all the race films and getting hyped for my next run. "Tomorrow can't come soon enough" is a thought I haven't experienced since I was a kid.
Perfect title! Love Kim and admire her as a runner, Girl Power! What an inspiration to a beginner runner like myself and her words of, as long as I can put one foot in front of the other I won't quit!
Did I cry as much as Kim watching this video. Probably not. But this video. This. This is what running is about. This is the heart and soul of racing. To reach for your full potential, and achieve goals that at one point didn't seem possible. This is running.
Inspiring and thankful for TGR for sharing! I'm 46 yrs old and I just completed my first 5m last week. I don't know how I'll get there but I aim to do a 50K in the near future! Of course, i need to complete my 10K goal set for April 2nd! Thanks again!
Fantastic as always, man. So inspirational to see Kim battle there in the middle and power through. Will and determination can overcome most anything. Great work, both of you!
This is an incredibly inspiring movie. By far the best running film I have seen to date. Captures the very essence of ultra running, or even just distance running. The cinematography is also superb! Congrats to the whole team, and especially Kim! I will for sure be mentioning this to my runner friends!
Ethan, over the past couple of months, your stories have truly inspired me. I literally watch your Squamish 50/50 video before I undertake a new running challenge. I didn't think I could like any of your videos more than that one... ....I was wrong. Kudos dude. Well done.
Very nice... I've suffered from anxiety in a couple events and I know what it feels like to not be able to get right... compliments to Kim for persevering and your ability to capture the hardship without humiliation - welld one
I know this is years after the video came out, but I am doing my first 100k this year, and seeing Kim going through all the emotions, up, downs and determination focuses me and drives me on to push me to do it. Plus her infectious smile is wonderful!
Beyond awesome! Well done guys, literally screaming COME ON KIM!! My dogs barking at the screen, chaos in the house, an amazing story, gorgeously shot, beautifully told and very well casted, fantastic cricket all round.
The most inspirational thing I have ever seen in my entire life. Your editing style is far better than any others. I would not be surprised to see a future movie of yours get a nationally accredited award, such as a golden globe or an Emmy.
This really captures the highs and lows very well. Kim, be forever proud of what you did. I think you discovered why you run. Amazing course. Great film and excellent quality.
I have two exams, organic chemistry and thermodynamics in the morning. I really want to watch It but this will have to be my treat once I'm done them. I will have to wait.....
Thank you so much for the film and taking us on Kim's journey. What an inspiration. Watching Kim struggle to finish brought me back to my first 5k! My first 14k Trail Run! The emotions, the self doubt, the sudden urge of power that overcomes you and drives you to the finish line, all could be felt watching the film. Shed some tears along with her, Loved it! I only wish it was longer! Looking forward to more???! Once again, thank you!!! Awesome job you two! (and three or four or five or six...)
Ethan, as a fellow ultra marathoner I find your videos amazing. Not simply because they show the sport I love but because you tell what is so great about the sport in such a beautiful way. Props to Kim on her finish - it was a 50K that was life changing for me as well and props to you for your great work on this video. Good luck to you and Kim in all your future races! (Ill see you out there).
Kim, I just watched this AGAIN. By far one of my favourite of Ethan's videos... Love the vulnerability and honesty this captures. Truly inspiring for me as I look ahead to getting back on the trails. Thank you both 💕
really admired your mental strength and stamina , i got caught out by altering my food the day before ran the worst race of my life , im 67 and have entered a marathon and will take this video in my memory as i do the course and take inspiration from you
I've watched this video many times and I wanted to finally thank you for making such an honest, raw video. When I was out for my first double digit run on an intense technical trail I thought about this video. I thought about how Kim's perseverance helped her push through all the doubt and the insecurities. It helped me to keep going and finish my longest run so far. So thanks Kim and Ethan, you guys inspire me to push through.
Excellent film and congrats to Kim for finishing. I'm a slow and heavy runner whose longest distance is 10K so running 31 miles blows my mind. The focus on speed seems to be quite big but distance seems a greater challenge to me. On a funny note, I have the same shoes and calf sleeves as KIm.
this is ballin. Congratulations Kim. Not only is it beautiful to watch your journey but it's really comforting to know that I'm not the only one whole feels anxiety when it comes to races.
Congrats Kim! Congrats Ginger! Awesome film and huge inspiration! I decided I'm running this event for 2015! I've ran one SF marathon and this is next for me!
Ethan, like I told you last night...you have a gift. Incredible at what you do, my good friend! Kim, way to push through and finish! Every race is a learning experience!
I rooted for her so so much !! She's so strong ! Also, can we talk about how beautiful she still looks after 50k of hell-running ?? Stunning :D Ethan, I am currently binge-watching all your films !! The quality is just incredible, be it the editing, storyline or music ! You're really talented and you put good stuff out there in the world. Thank you for all that !
Well done to the both of you! A major thumbs up to Kim for getting through that wall and grinding on all the way to the finish line. Also another thumbs up to Ethan for the documenting of Kim's journey and the editing of this film. It must've been very difficult to see the one you love suffer and still having to document what's happening. A monster effort on the editing part. I also like the way you've edited yourself out of the video to make way for Kim as the star of the movie. Well done! I'm inspired now, nevermind the snow outside. I'm going out for a run!
So exhausted and yet, so worth staying up for. I'm always inspired by Ethan's films and enthusiasm. And now, of course, by Kimberly's. Thanks for the courage to share your humanness; a feat no less impressive than compassionately conquering yourself at your first 50k.
I think that this is your best film yet. It's inspiring to see someone go through so much pain, push on, and accomplish their goal. Grats to Kimberly on the finish!
Hey Kim, thanks so much for sharing that personal experience with us and the whole world. Your a true champ, way to go and don't give up. Shout out to you also Ethan, great film, thanks to you both.
Superb, moving, inspiring. Your best movie so far (granted, I have a lot of catching up to do). Everything is beautiful, the scenery, the music, the filming and of course the runner. Well done Kim. Well done Ethan. And thank you so much.
I've watched this a couple of times. I really liked it. I was really impressed with Kim's perseverance when things really didn't go her way. It just goes to show that even with the best preparation things can go wrong, but that guts and determination can get you through anything if you just face it head on. Top video. I think the music on this video is really good too, I'll be buying it when I get home.
This was such an emotional journey. I too have suffered with anxiety and illness out on long distance courses and it's so hard to see the end from that place, but Kim totally went out there and kicked butt! Was so teary watching her finish this race, well done! And great filming too, beautifully shot. Really felt like I was out there running with her
I absolutely adore Kim...she's beautiful both inside and out, a super girl crush and fitness muse. Awesome soundtrack as well!!! It's my new go-to run-to.
Beautiful race. Awesome video. I hope Kim does more ultras in the future. Redemption can be the name of the one. Thank you for making these it truly is inspiring to see the struggles and triumphs of running an ultra and not just marveling over the elites.
Kim has such a beautiful smile! You two are such an inspiration... that's it! I'm doing a half marathon this December! I've been doubting myself for the whole summer but this video is so assuring. Thank you, Ginger runner! :)
Ethan, this is an amazingly intimate and vulnerable portrait into the mind of a runner and the experience of an ultramarathon. I'm not a runner, but I was glued every second. Beautifully made film, love this. Fantastic work brother.
Today is not the first time I have watched this and loved it. Really wonderful, both of you. But today staring down the barrel of bandera 100k and 17h time cut off for WSER ticket I was gobbing (gasping/sobbing) with the emotion, all of them- fear, hopefulness, training invested, anxiety, all that work in a day, and then happiness and strength. Thanks team. Kim I hope I can find in me that power to push push push. Thanks crew!
Beautiful motion picture. People at the finish line made ME cry. I can't even begin to imagine how it felt for Kim or you, Ethan. Just amazing. I know what I'll be thinking about on my long run today :) #marathontraining
Once again, two thumbs up! I wish I could go back to America just to run those breath taking trails. You have been giving away some hints lately. This new " Ginger Runner Coat Of Arms" may mean that next year, our dear ginger will not only review, race and film, but become a race director. ;)
Truly inspirational film. A raw, honest and personal account of an epic challenge. The "Can you make it the next seven?" was a real moment, like watching a fighter get back up after a KO. I remember hearing somewhere that an ultra is like a lifetime of emotions in a single race, this film really explores that, thanks for sharing it with us.
This is a beautiful and artful film. I felt as though I was watching a love letter. I can't say too many times how crazy talented you are and how much I enjoy the original music.
This was so good. I am so proud of you Kimberly !! You are a bad ass ultra runner. You did it and I totally agree its not about how long it takes you its about running finishing and doing your best. Great Job Mr. GingerRunner this is beautiful
Awesome film about the great experience Kim had! So inspirational for everyone. But I feel Kim is right, I bet she felt the same way the person who crossed the finish line first. Way to go Kim!
Your best film yet!!! I got so choked up; you guys are so inspiring! I'm trying to push pass 14 miles, this film is gonna help me do it, thank you both!
Simply AMAZING! Thank you Kimberly and Ethan. I will be running my first full marathon in 4 weeks and find myself with a butterfly stomach each time I go for a run. Kimberly, you have inspired me to take on the same approach. You are right, "it's not about the time..." and "if you can put one foot in front of the other, there is no excuse to drop out". I hope my first marathon changes my life as this Ultra has obviously done for you. Truly remarkable. Love the filming Ethan. Congratulations to you both! Loyal follower, Rene Winter Springs, Florida 13.1 x 3 26.2 WDW 1/11/15
You are a role model to young woman (and men) everywhere not DESPITE having fears/anxieties but BECAUSE you have them 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍Thanking the race organisers and volunteers shows what a good person you are!
Good job Kim! Got my first 50km done this year in the North Face Endurance Challenge at Blue Mountain ,Collingwood in Ontario. It was tough and this movie brought back lots of memories. I think I'll try this one out in 2015!
Absolutely cracking film. Very inspirational story. Well done to Kim on her fab achievement and well done Ethan on producing such a well rounded and moving film. Liked and shared! Keep up the good work!
Ethan, for the past week I have been on a binge watching your videos and I came across this one today... it's brilliant. It is so raw and shows the true determination of an endurance athlete. It has provided me with even more motivation to set higher goals for myself. Keep on pushing out amazing content!
"Can you make it the last seven?" Goddamn, I haven't rooted for anyone that much since Sam started carrying Frodo up mount doom. Well done!
Ethan, I cannot thank you enough for this amazing gift you've given me. Your creativity and your filming/editing/composing abilities are just above and beyond amazing. I'm so lucky to have this film to reflect back on and to grow from. Thank you babe, love you so much!
Love YOU, babe! So proud of your accomplishment and am lucky to be there to experience right along side you!
***** And I love YOUUUUUU

Haha, excellent!

Fantastic as always, man. So inspirational to see Kim battle there in the middle and power through. Will and determination can overcome most anything. Great work, both of you!
This is the only RUclips-channel where I cry every other video, well done!
Do you cry watching my reviews?! I'll try to up the smile level :)
This is an incredibly inspiring movie. By far the best running film I have seen to date. Captures the very essence of ultra running, or even just distance running. The cinematography is also superb! At mile 24 aid, when you decided to continue, I got goosebumps! Yes, Kim!!!! Awesome perseverance. Just awesome.
Great job finishing the race!
You're a inspiration for the rest of us who don't have runned a ultra before!
And that goes to you aswell Mr Newberry!
A lovely film, a lovely lady lady, a lovely couple.......so inspiring.
I really enjoy that you take a simple subject, running, and make a compelling and motivational film. You are quite the story teller. Nicely done!
Ethan, over the past couple of months, your stories have truly inspired me. I literally watch your Squamish 50/50 video before I undertake a new running challenge.
I didn't think I could like any of your videos more than that one...
....I was wrong.
Kudos dude. Well done.
Thanks Jim!!

Way to go. Turned what could have been a negative into a positive. Great job to Kim on the finish and great job to Ginger runner for the film.
Beautiful film. Beautiful and strong Kim. I had tears. Thank you.
I wish I could like this video a million times!!! The film quality/editing is what got me here, but Kim is what kept me here. So inspiring.
Beyond awesome! Well done guys, literally screaming COME ON KIM!! My dogs barking at the screen, chaos in the house, an amazing story, gorgeously shot, beautifully told and very well casted, fantastic cricket all round.

I just cant get enough of your movies Ginger, and the music, insane!
Amazing documentary! Where has been this Jewel hiding in RUclips for all this years. Really, reeeeally inspiring movie!
I have two exams, organic chemistry and thermodynamics in the morning. I really want to watch It but this will have to be my treat once I'm done them. I will have to wait.....

(Ill see you out there).
Kim, I just watched this AGAIN. By far one of my favourite of Ethan's videos... Love the vulnerability and honesty this captures. Truly inspiring for me as I look ahead to getting back on the trails. Thank you both 💕
Stars aligned your love for her shines through.
Stunning inspirational movie
Super inspirational! Thank you, Kim, for having the courage to show us what it's like to face your demons and beat them! Great finish!
Man.... Ethan, both you and your girl are so incredibly inspiring... Thank you!
really admired your mental strength and stamina , i got caught out by altering my food the day before ran the worst race of my life , im 67 and have entered a marathon and will take this video in my memory as i do the course and take inspiration from you
I've watched this video many times and I wanted to finally thank you for making such an honest, raw video. When I was out for my first double digit run on an intense technical trail I thought about this video. I thought about how Kim's perseverance helped her push through all the doubt and the insecurities. It helped me to keep going and finish my longest run so far. So thanks Kim and Ethan, you guys inspire me to push through.
Just got back into running after 4th years away. Im enjoying all these vids again!
Wow! Absolutely amazing. Perseverance, one foot in front of the other, relentless forward motion. You should be immensely proud of yourself!
Wonderful, simply wonderful. Congrats Kim!
this is ballin.
Thanks vargo. I mean it buddy, your endless support has been awesome. Can't wait to shred some gnar gnar binx with you!
I rooted for her so so much !! She's so strong ! Also, can we talk about how beautiful she still looks after 50k of hell-running ?? Stunning :D
Ethan, I am currently binge-watching all your films !!
Suffer?.
This is sport... And voluntary.. 😁😁😁😀😀😝
So exhausted and yet, so worth staying up for. I'm always inspired by Ethan's films and enthusiasm. And now, of course, by Kimberly's. Thanks for the courage to share your humanness; a feat no less impressive than compassionately conquering yourself at your first 50k.
You're a hell of a filmmaker Ethan. This was really well done! The cinematography, the pacing, the editing and theme, music. All great!
Thanks Wren!! Appreciate it, dude!
So so wonderful and inspiring - thank you for sharing this. Kim you're a superstar!! Now... time to go find where my local trails are!!
Incredible! Inspiring, I want to run out of the house and run forever after watching your brilliant will and effort.
Superb, moving, inspiring. Your best movie so far (granted, I have a lot of catching up to do).
Everything is beautiful, the scenery, the music, the filming and of course the runner.
Well done Kim. Well done Ethan. And thank you so much.
Kim's such a warrior! I'm so glad I found this channel. I'm really looking forward to get back to running now!
Finally had the time to sit and enjoy this. Great job to you both, Kim for the hard earned finish, and Ethan for capturing it.....
Wow! I really can't put into words how beautiful seeing that finish was. Excellent doc!
I know she's hungry for more, so stay tuned! And there are so many stories throughout the field, just happy to tell a few of them :)
Kim has such a beautiful smile! You two are such an inspiration... that's it! I'm doing a half marathon this December! I've been doubting myself for the whole summer but this video is so assuring. Thank you, Ginger runner! :)
Kimberly,welcome to the tribe.
Ethan your films get better every time ,looking forward to the
your next film.Keep on running
The Mind will always be stronger than the Body! Good Job!!!
Ethan, this is an amazingly intimate and vulnerable portrait into the mind of a runner and the experience of an ultramarathon. I'm not a runner, but I was glued every second. Beautifully made film, love this. Fantastic work brother.
Thanks Brian! Appreciate it dude :)
Just.. Wow, inspiring!!Her achievement made me cry..
This film is breathtaking. You Sir, need an award for this. Well done!
This is bound to cure my cold !
Awesome, thanks for sharing, she is no less than an inspiration
Wonderful film. Couldn't be prouder of you Kim. Luv the two of you!!!
Great Job Kimberely, an inspiring accomplishment. Ethan very powerful film you created, very happy for both of you.

Thanks Craig!
Ethan, for the past week I have been on a binge watching your videos and I came across this one today... it's brilliant. It is so raw and shows the true determination of an endurance athlete. It has provided me with even more motivation to set higher goals for myself. Keep on pushing out amazing content!
