The Barkley Marathons - one of the world's toughest ultramarathons, has been held annually in the Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee, since 1987.
The race is so brutal that, since the inception of the race, only 15 people have managed to finish. Runners are to run five 20-mile loops, within a 60 hour time limit and with more than 20.000m of elevation change.
The course is unmarked, no electronic devices are allowed and most of the race is off-trail.
Out There - A journey to the Barkley Marathons is the story of Belgian ultrarunner Karel Sabbe, who holds the world records on two of the most epic trails in the world: the 4279km long Pacific Crest Trail and the 3500km long Appalachian Trail.
How did setting these world records prepare Karel for a race as brutal as "the Barkley"? How did these adventures help Karel to find the necessary mindset to do well at this Spartan challenge?
Out There is a story of persistence, endurance and a passion for the great outdoors, and the film inspires the audience to reconnect with nature and to find courage for personal challenges. - Спорт
Is anyone else addicted to watching Barkley Marathons documentaries?
100% dont know why these are so interesting but here we are😂
Haha yes and I've been smoking for over 20 years. The last time I ran was about 10 years ago when my dog got loose.
me, yes. Most definitely me. Truthfully fascinating.
Yes, and now 762 thousand others 😂
I’m not a runner, I can’t get enough content. Such a brutal exciting race.🙏🏻🇨🇦
And you can claim that you are the 17th finisher of the Barkley marathons now. What an incredible feat
Powerful Karel Sabbe finishes the 2023 Barkley Marathon with just over 6 minutes to spare! I am so happy for you and your crew!
Karel Sabbe, Barkley Marathons finisher!! What a journey. So happy for him and his family - he seems like a great dude.
Who's back here 2023 after Karel did it? Awesome achievement!
Absolutely incredible athletes (who is this guy and he absolutely smashed the AT and PCT), but the one takeaway I have from watching these documentaries is the tremendous support systems these athletes have and the completely devoted families and friends. Incredible to watch.
I’ve noticed they also don’t seem to have any limits. They decide they want to do something and they do it. I’m trying to get to this mindset.
Check out Heather "Anish" Anderson. I believe she still has the PCT unsupported record. Unsupported means nobody bringing you food, nobody providng you with shelter, no mailing food to you, not even a hitch into town to get food. Only you carrying everything and walking into town for food and back to the trail. When she broke the unsupported record, she also broke the record for a supported trail runner at that time. Yet, she just looks like an average woman.
He 's from Gent , BElgium
@michaelb1761 self-supported, not unsupported. Unsupported means you get nothing after you start other than water from natural sources. Self-supported you can walk to grocery stores and charge electronics/power bricks
The thing I think gets you at Barkley and something that you can’t train for no matter what is the combination of that much sleep deprivation while trying to also complete that hard of a trail.
By far the best Barkley coverage. Just the right mix of background, attitude, training, and race coverage. I'm in awe at the smiles and laughter. All of you rock!
100% watch Where Dreams Got to Die. Really emphasizes how mentally brutal the marathons are.
@@apothecurio Yeah,it was amazingly done. It's definitely worth to watch it.
@@apothecurio meh that documentary is about 6 six seconds too long imo
@@apothecurio Also “The Race that Eats its Young” is excellent. None of them are excellent enough to make me think about trying to run The Barkley Marathons though 😱
@@squierstrat9502 LOL yes, those last seconds were brutal...
Tennessee native here. I wanna start by saying im extremely impressed by anyone who even attempts a lap of this. I've been in these mountains hunting and hiking my entire 33 years of life and spring here is a rough time to be out in these hills. To do so coming from a completely different country is crazy impressive. At least im use to the weather, land and conditions here. You can literally go thru 3 seasons in 24 hours here as you kinda see in this video. I've been outside shirtless sweating in the day, have a tornado come that afternoon and the temp drop 50°F and snow start falling. We dont get regular snow here tho really. It's more ice then puffy snow. Now add on top of that physical exhausted from the elevation changes, and sleep deprivation and a time limit while navigating. that's a real recipe for pain. So im very impressed by your first attempt and hope you've now made it
He has! Look at new documentary on this channel!
I've watched a lot of barkley docs but this one really gives an eye opener to what is needed to finish. Running multiple marathons in the desert and breaking the records on both the act and pct and the barkley still got him. That's insane. What a good shot at it though.
Karel is another emotionally grounded, mellow, and peaceful finisher, with a sense of balance and humor.
"still better than being in an office....and working at a desktop" Words of wisdom, Lloyd, my man. Words of wisdom. - Jack Torrance
He finished loop 5!!! 59:53:33!
Stunning achievement!
What a cracking documentary. And dude, how insanely good are you at running! Also love the fact you come across really humble. And "Sloppy Joe" seems a right good laugh! Good luck on your next adventure. 👍🏻
Insanely good at running is right, and his attitude and mental toughness. The dude absolutely decimated the AT and PCT records that were set by absolutely ridiculous athletes and teams. With the help of just one amazing friend. What a cool story.
I love the friendship between you and Jo. We need more examples of deep male friendship in our world.
The epitome of a talented, humble runner who loves running for the challenge and "getting out there". Hats off to you Karel, you're an inspiration!!
Thanks for your kind words!
Having found this video 3 years later i am still inspired by what you achieved back then and even more by where you are now.
You are one crazy bastard!
Love the idea that having a climb named after you will just inspire a whole generation of future trail runners. Brilliant film, so much in there to love and applaud.
Joe simply walking straight towards you, clapping your incredible effort by himself and hugging you without either of you needing to say a thing 😭♥
I love when people are super chill about being actually great. You are incredibly inspiring. This was a great watch, thank you!
Whenever I think I'm having a hard day on the trail, I think of the Barkeley marathon and its athletes. All of a sudden my difficulties seem like a trivial temporary pain. Great video!
I mean you're allowed to have a hard day, they are CHOOSING to feel that way...but I get what you're saying❤
Wow! what an incredible athlete you are! I remember your name from last year, but did not really know anything about your FKT records at the PCT and AT. Both your wife and Joe provide an incredible support system. I am blown by how humble you are and keep smiling at all hardships; you all three make an awesome team. I hope you are in the race in 2020 and I believe that you can team up with Gary and Grieg and become #16,17,18. - You need to get a sponsor... Solomon, Hoka, NorthFace and the rest, take notice!
Btw, what an incredibly well presented film with no fanfare whatsoever. Those of us who have been following the Barkley for years waited for the main 2012-race documentary for 3 years and then waited for Ginger Runner's film on Gary Robbins for 2 years as well. Your film is as professionally made as those and needs to be the feature film in this year's BFC.
No sponsors allowed .. keep it clean !!!
I am amazed and enthralled by the Barkley. When I was young I used to hike and run the trails there. Never imagined a race! I haven’t been there in years but enjoy watching videoes about the race and those who participate. 🏃♂️🏃♂️
Oh Man!You are so lucky to have a friend and a partner like them and they lucky too to have you!!!We need more people like you!Amazing achievement. If someone, you will do it!Thank you!!!!!!
Watching for the umpteenth time while waiting for Karel to finish the 5th loop of the 2023 Barkley Marathons! Fingers crossed.
Congratulations from the future BtW! Your’s is definitely the most compelling story of the race considering what happened in 2022. Going back after that is incredible.
One of the best ultra documentaries I've seen! Awesome job on the video and even more impressive accomplishments! Very inspiring!
Crewing for the other runners is amazing. What good people.
What an incredible story. So happy I found this video
Missed some good recent Barkley content. This was superb

The very best thing Ive watched on youtube in months ✌️

What a delightful Barkley report. I love your attitude and perseverance. Thank you for a very entertaining evening of viewing. Congratulations on the FKTs and getting three loops done too!
This was great! Love the optimistic attitude and your focus on always learning and improving.
Wow. Very moving, I just love that you didn't try to be anyone but who you are through the experience. You did not let your frustrations get the best of you, you refocused and tried again. Amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Wonderfully impressive documentary, and an even more outstanding performance at your first Barkley attempt. Your accomplishments are amazing! You, your wife and Joe have such fantastic and positive attitudes. Hope to see another documentary when you finish the Barkley Marathons 2020.

Great journey! I love the Barkely and your story is awesome thanks for taking us along with you! Hope to see you in the race again!
Indrukwekkend verhaal hoe je gekomen bent tot je doel, de Barkley marathons. Geen verhaal van zelfverheerlijking maar een gewone vent die een doel wil halen.... respect. Erg inspirerend.
Thank you for a fascinating insight into your world. You have so much positivity.
Ultimate respect and I hope that if you do return to the Barkley Marathons you fulfill your dream.
Well done, and thank you for all of your commentary. It was very informative and I love the history of your other runs/adventures. Good luck in all your adventures.
An awesome story about an awesome endurance athlete. Your wife and friend are amazing teammates. We cannot do what we do without loving and caring family and friends behind us. Congratulations.
Really enjoyed this documentary, Karel! Good luck on your next adventures!

How awesome, thank you so so much for sharing. Im just in awe of the joy and humility you and your team bring to all of this. I will try and channel that. Also more hills for me!
Congratulations Karel for finishing this year’s Barkley!! 3 finishers. Great to see
Great Doku!!!
Amazing to see how hard you (and all the others) try to complete the Barkley...and how incredibly hard it must be, to complete a loop.
I can‘t imagine to to this...and moreover it seems impossible to do during the night.
Moreover it was totally interesting to see some footage about your PCT/AT FKTs.
Kudos to your wife and your buddy for their incredible support! Great to have such people around in life.
You bet! They're the best and there would be no ultrarunning career without them!
I'm a sub-five marathoner, and not only do I have NO thoughts about doing the Barkley, 26.2 now seems somewhat casual and lightweight by comparison. A light day for Karel.
You are a savage sir. Just finished my first 100 miler a couple weeks ago and this inspires me to go for the next one. Great video!
That's amazing. Awesome job!
@@alexukbrighton Thank you!
@@TheAaronthenia Congrats! If you don't mind, what caused you to want to take on something so incredibly difficult? And what lesson did you learn from your journey?
@@SCORP1ONF1RE I heard about running 100 miles and initially dismissed it as crazy and never can do it. I ran local half marathons for a couple of years prior but I gave myself the goal of completing a 100 mile race. I trained very hard for 8 months to prepare and was successful. I learned from this how important preparation is prior to attempting something like that, albeit at an accelerated training schedule. Mentally preparing yourself, running when you are tired, were all important when training for a 100 mile distance.
@@TheAaronthenia very cool! I have that goal before I turn forty!
Genoten van deze documentaire, proficiat!
Fantastic documentary. True inspiration.
Eindeloos respect!!! Naast de ongelooflijke prestaties ook nog eens mooi in beeld gevat! Sterk werk...
Thank you!
This just shows how brutal that race is... Hope to see the next attempt.
really enjoyed this well put-together material! truly motivational! thank you!
A great athlete always has a second chance ... Impressive, impressive, impressive ...
Awesome journey Karel. Still not sure how you manage to beat the Appalachian Trail record by so much! Keep going man. Love from Canada.
Eres un gran atleta!! Gracias por compartir la experiencia. Barckley es una prueba tremenda.
Great film and story! Thank you for sharing!
Awesome. Saw you finished goal years later, way to go
So inspired by your story! Such a great example of a positive mindset. Well done! Best of luck at your next attempt.
Thanks!
