Audi TT MK1 Quattro Clutch Change Guide

- This is a long video, because its a long job! Typically its an all day job- i can trim it down to 6 hours but i've done it countless times, and that's only if there's no issues along the way. If yore tackling this for the first time, it's well worth investing half an hour in seeing how it's done properly.
Changing the clutch on the Audi TT Quattro is a big job because of how much you have to remove to get access. the transfer box makes it a bit of a pig! Garages charge a lot of money for this job - i charge a fair amount aswell as its the biggest job barring engine removal that i undertake.
**This video will potentially save you a few hundred quid, and took me an extra couple of hours on the initial job, as well as a few hours editing to be able to help you save money, so please, if this does help you out, consider dropping me a few £££ to say thanks - link below.**
Take your time, make sure you've got everything you need before you start, and get stuck in. Good luck!

Thanks for the vid dude. Iv done two clutch / flywheel jobs on my mk4 platforms and thanks to your vids it made life so easy. Much respect.🤘
Nice video, Bryn. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I'm watching this after the event [well, almost] - just buttoning up the last few bits and pieces now. Mine was the first time and it took me a fair while but I figured that the cautious approach was the best approach! Cheers.
I am gonna be doing my clutch here in a few days you posted this just in time great video man very helpful👍🏻
That is a terrific video, all the information you could possibly need. Thanks very much for all your efforts Bryan. I look forward to the next one. Tony
Great video! It’s the only complete video for a clutch job on a Quattro Mk1 TT. I’m getting the dreaded DMF “clunk” on my ‘01 225 roadster, so it’s time. Hope your shoulder is better. Thanks for helping keep the MK1 TT alive!!
Brother seeing this and then seeing your new shop makes me smile from ear to ear. 🤜🏼🤛🏼🇦🇺🍀🍀🍀😎
Thanks heaps for all your videos... I’ve learned so much from you. 🙏🏻
Your video has an advertisement ever four minutes on average, but..... your videos are worth their weight in gold and are the only channels videos I’ve ever said that about before.
Knowledge building business!!🤜🏼🤛🏼🍀🍀🍀😎🇦🇺
This video has been an immense help since the nipple end of my slave broke and dropping the trans and swapping it along with a new clutch. Thanks Man For The Help. From Cali
Glad to be of assistance!
You really keep it simple!! After watching your video, I pretty much think that I do it myself!! I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd and the gears ground a bit. I felt something come loose. Probably the gear fork. I lost everything but third gear. The transmission is stuck in third gear. I limped home in third gear. So, hopefully I take the gear box out and inspect it and hopefully I'm not too much in the woods!
Bryn did a complete clutch today for me
Great guy I’m using him in future 💪
Mate, you deserve more subscribers:) Awesome videos, informative and helpfull. Thanks for sharing.
Absolute legend!! I've been working on 1.8t 20vs for about 4 years. Know them like the back of my hands. Until I went to a quattro haha! I had no idea how to deal with the prop shaft. Now I know thanks to you ❤️ thanks brother
Where are you located?? I got some projects need done... willing to drive for repair but not pay the scam shops around my town... I need clutch and exhaust work. My interior smells like exhaust and I can feel the co2 in my brain every time I drive the car.
Superb video.
I wouldn't tackle that by myself but great to see someone share their obvious knowledge and experience on how to do this. Given the number of awkward steps involved then it's clearly a job for someone who knows what they are doing. How to find those knowledgeable people is another matter...
My videos have always served 2 purposes-
Firstly to aid those with the base skill set to be able to tackle jobs they are unfamiliar with.
Secondly to show potential customers that they can trust that i know what i’m doing.
You seem to have noticed both reasons lol
@@BWSTT I wish you good luck. I still have my Mk1 TT I bought 19 years now, still on the same original clutch. It can't go on forever so wondered how complex the job is and now I know: it's a job for a pro.
Wow! Its always nice knowing that there are 1 owner TTs still out there- and ive heard of the clutches lasting 150-200k miles if treated properly
Super helpful bro and can’t wait to share my MK1 build !! Currently in the shop replacing all this since I can’t do it myself haha cheers! 🥴🦾🏎💨
Very good! These are the videos that are needed
👍I will do my clutch too
Wow! Seems so simple! I should’ve never offered my mother-in-law to replace her clutch. Wow. This is definitely a job. I miss doing easy clutch’s. Cheers!
Thank you mate, your video is really helpful, i needed this. I have to change my clutch on my S3 1.8T as it gave up on my way back home, i'm going for a single mass flywheel this time.
yeah I watched this video 7 times through and through to get my trans out worked as expected!!!! thank you so much!!!
You’re welcome!
Nice work bryn, some good tips mentally noted.
You made it look easy , but you know your stuff, great filming...
Another fantastic video from the tt guru 👍😀
OMG what a job. Well done mate, great video.
great jo and that you too the time too talk with no stress and all the filming was great too!! I a need too see this before I take the change of a clutch of my Seat Ibiza Cupra
Hey mate just wanted to say a massive thank you for this. Did this job couple days back and your vid was super helpful. Liked & subscribed!
Brilliant, glad i could be of help!
Thanks for the great video!! I'm doing mine next weekend! Cheers
Thanks mate this video is super handy, I def need to change my clutch Some Time soon!
Great video as always mate
Great work Bryn.....excellent....👍👍
Got this job to do tomorrow I think this video will came in very useful
Great video! I was able to do the job. The most awful part was getting gearbox back as whole. It has to be literally totally aligned with engine and it helps if you rotate engine at same time. Definetely needs two people, if no previous experience. Thanks again!
Glad it's all sorted
@@BWSTT 😀
Gary Shanks, thanks for the pint! The new flywheel bolts come with loctite on them from factory, and the pressure plate bolts don't need any - if you want to use some though (for the pressure plate) then medium strength will suffice.
Well done mate , great job 👍 thank you
Did the job today! First time ever touching an audi. Couldnt have done it without you!
Not a fun job is it
Thanks looks slightly easier than the xtrail I not long done. Great tip for the slave cylinder. Why have I never thought of that before. Also great advice about those tricky bolts. Looking forward to doing it on the weekend
Enjoy! Hopefully this has helped prevent some head scratching moments, and you can just fly through the job :)
Cracking video fella 👍🏻 definitely something I’ll leave to you though 😂 it’s a little bit out my range.
Bloody brilliant video. Reminded me of doing a gearbox change on a Celica GT4 although the TT is way easier.
You are the man great video very helpful
amazing video man. thank you you killed it
Good video! My clutch is starting to slip in my 02 tt so I’m going to be doing this soon
You're a badass, thanks for sharing your craft.
I pray to God I won't need this video anytime soon, thanks for the detailed info though!
BIG job mate, fair play to you!
nicely done,,,even when working on the floor
Great video! I don't even own a tt but still awesome to watch🤣
hi. thank you so much for your video
I see that the front lower arm and front subframe including the dogbones have to be removed in order to do this work, right?
i need some help so i changed my audi tt clutch, and after the clutch pedals seems really soft to push, it grinds going into reverse and some gears are hard to shift into (for the fed)
Great video bud
Hi, do you know if there is any different in which smf clutch kit that fits for Audi TT mk1 1.8T Quattro 225hk? I have a year 1999 and can’t find any kit that is compatible with my chassi number.
Thanks for this grate Chanel 😃👍🏻
Hello Bryn, a couple weeks back i blew my engine and now i have a new one and thinking of putting in a new clutch. Its a 225 and would like to give it a little more power about 260-270 hp. What clutch should you recomend? Could a LUK 324030210 be an option?
Will be doing this so . What is the best clutch to use with a mapped 225 MK1
Thanks
good to watch, still waiting for you to come do mine in nuneaton :)
Excellent video! Thanks
Hi Bryan, well done mate, very professional, will be requiring your services soon, location Derby, will be in touch👍👍
Bruv, please do some video about the haldex. I have mine haldex always on 4wd and I get awful noises when doing the parking manouvers. I tried 3 different control units and still doesnt work, changed the oil and the filter everytime. When I take the haldex plug off the car becones just fwd and there is no noises from the rear on parking place. Do you have any idea?
great vid, thanks !
Great video, thank you!
what is that tool called that you are using to hold the flywheel from moving?
Some dedication filming this whole job!! I wouldn’t wanna do the job let alone film it too!! Very helpful!
Hi Bryn, I’ve messaged you via Facebook re work on my TT
uhh hello I'm changing clutch out 01 tt .. you made mention of using clutch for a v6 those will interchange no problems?? and thank you for the videos much appreciated
Are you best to do the haldex oil’s while you have room to do other maintenance work at the same time
Looks like an absolute mission to do on your own!
Is there no pilot bearing on these transverse mounted 1.8s? I'm currently working on putting a new motor in a 2001 TT. Replacing the flywheel, clutch, etc and do not see a pilot bearing, nor did one come with my new OEM kit..
great vid mate......
Hello:) Great video. I'm using it to change my rear main seal. Last thing I need to do after eight months of work rebuilding almost the entire engine and fixing every detail on the car after water pump failed and eight bent valves. 2001 TT quattro 4WD. The only thing left that I need is the extra long 8"+ 6mm allen key for the passenger side drive shaft bolt that is way in there... I have the other one out, and everything detached from everything. Except the two upper bolts of the gearbox, and the 6mm bolt in the center of the passenger side driveshaft. Question is, do I NEED to remove that passenger side 6mm interior drive shaft bolt? Or once I remove everything from the seam holding the engine together at the intermediate plate, where I can see the rear main seal, can I just start lowering it all as one piece? I have the prop shaft to the side, everything separated. Do you need to even deal with the flywheel? Can't I just lower the gearbox, transmission, two ends of the cv axle shaft and everything, with the flywheel and clutch inside of it, as one single piece, to see and access, and change the rear main seal?? lol, Thanks. My brain hurts:)
So, you can keep the transfer box mated to thr gearbox (leave the 6mm bolt in and the 4 bolts holding it on) it just becomes trickier. The rear main seal sits behind the flywheel, so youll need to fully remove gearbox and clutch.
Hi , what about the yellow markings on Mass flywheel , do they have to line up ???
Thanks for the tutorial and all the tips and tricks! I couldn't help buy notice you not saying anything about doing the rear main seal while you're in there. Was this in a separate video that I've missed?
I'm about to be doing a power build on my TT Quattro Roadster with a BEA engine. I'll be switching to a Clutch Masters 01M6SPDSTG3CK kit which is marketed as "stage 3". I'm also pairing it with a Clutch Masters FW017AL 14lb single pound flywheel. I'm aware that I cannot count of this flywheel to absorb vibration like the stock dual mass does, and I'll learn to control that as I get used to the new setup. I'm also aware that adding power increases vibration. To counter this, I'll be upgrading the stock harmonic damper to a Fluidampr, which uses viscous silicon and all kinds of engineering to absorb extra vibration caused by removing the stock dual mass flywheel and adding power. This Fluidampr adds about 1lb to the harmonic damper, which means my 14lb flywheel will effectively become a 15lb flywheel. That being said, it's still a lot lighter than stock.
Excellent diy tutorial mate. Doing mine soon with uprated kit. Any top tips what to go for at 4-500bhp?
The Sachs 4 puk clutch plate with stock DMF and pressure plate is good for 500bhp all day long
That clutch slave trick is awesome!
Lol... I’m about to build a T9 for a mk1 with a trick Titan slave. I might just employ your trick too make it a bit easier to bleed.
Could use the same pump it up style for a slave on a bias pedal box. They’re notoriously hard to bleed sometimes.
Good sun shade setup.🤜🏼🤛🏼🍀😎🇦🇺
My wife got so upset when I told her that the plm makes it so much easier to land on the carrier. She said “yeah it’s still stressful for them!” That Chief Life and all knowing the Pilots.
You do make it look pretty easy. Yet that’s why your a fighter pilot and not a WSO. Fly Navy!
Ermmmm
Great video buddy, I’ve got a 180q and need to get the clutch changed what clutch would you recommend?
If you plan on keeping the standard turbo, them the standard clutch is more than adequate
R
Should replace all bolts everytime? Clutch pressure plate and flywheel? Just OEM bolts or upgraded?
Thanks
Watching this video again... looking for the clutch bleeding process.😉🤜🏼🤛🏼🍀🇦🇺😎
Thank you for the vid.,. Did you make your tightening tool yourself?
No, that's a tool available from the dealer
Great music... suit your video perfectly. 😏
Great stuff
Cool tip with the slave cylinder, thanks!
This is a great video! I am going to attempt this at home on my S3 8L. Is it possible to remove the box without removing the subframe if I split the box from the transfer box on the car?
If you really want to struggle you can try, but in short, no.
My TT is locking in first and reverse gear could this be a warped pressure plate the hydraulic s are all new
Is there no pilot bearing?? About to do mine didn’t see you change one out
Hi Bryn, will the mk 2 TT quattro transfer box come out attached to the gearbox on a tdi do you know? Cheers.
Cant say for definite as i dont work on them, but i cant see why it wouldnt
Amazing detail on this - you're a champ!
My 225 Quattro is about to need a clutch job too, so I'm already saving for the bill.
I was wondering if you'd ever recommend a lightweight flywheel, or "Stage 1-2" clutches on these cars (and whether they're significantly affect comfort as far as noise, stiffness of pedal, etc.) - I'm running stock internals and an APR tune, and though theoretically I'm pulling about 275 horsepower and 275 lb.ft of torque at the crank, I very much doubt the real values are anywhere near that, and I don't foresee myself putting enough money into the car that it'd ever go over the 320 wheel horsepower range.
Thank you for all the great videos - tutorials like this are an absolute lifesaver!
Can cutting down that power steering line make your PS whine?
I’m guessing this will be the same on a 8L S3? Brilliant video! I need to do my clutch shortly so I’m hoping it’s the same
Yeah its the same, have fun!
Do you have a parts listing? What clutch kit and flywheel did you install? My slave cylinder just went, blew the seal
He’s using LUK oem
@BWSTT Can i use/ put this 225 clutch on the 180 model.
yes if its quattro
Were can i get speer clips for that pipe thanks.
Hi Bryn.👍 Great video there 😎 My QS is due a clutch soon and you recommend using a clutch from the 225 as you say it is stronger. My car is currently about 290bhp. Would this be okay???? Many thanks and keep up the good work😎😎😎😎😎
It’ll be ok as long as your driving style doesn’t consist of full throttle launches everywhere
Is the DSG transmission similar, harder to remove? Any tips for a pint? I need to change the DMF
There are coolant lines and extra wiring to consider, and when you remove the subframe theres the vacuum pump that needs disconnecting, but after that its fairly similar. That said, there are enough differences that you will need to check more as you go
@@BWSTT Thanks sent you a virtual pint via PP ;)
Great video... the music makes it look fun, which it is until it sucks 50% of the way. subscribing because you deserve it over samcrac or hoovie
Cheers for the support, I appreciate it!
Video eccellente! Grazie !!!
Nice video man!
Turbo removal next ;) haha
It's filmed ready for editing ;)
@@BWSTT This one i have to see
Brother I’m taking out my gearbox tomorrow. Dreaded selector fork pin by the looks of it.
How much would you expect to pay for a clutch replacement?
Howsit man, recon you could do a video on doing the hydraulic line for the clutch 🤣
Hi Man, i need some help with my TT i have a bad oil leak, i've cleaned my engine bay and think i know where its coming from, how do i contact you for work or advise?
Email bwstt225@gmail.com I'm quite busy at the moment though so don't be offended if I'm slow to respond
Thank You!!!
My synchro is bad. My clutch is bad too. I am planning swapping transmission since I need to drop it anyways, and this video makes me to pay mechanic rather than doing it by myself hahaha
hi BWS TT!
YES! it was very useful especially that clever trick for the slave cylinder, i would not have thougt about pre-feeding it with hydraulic! - very smart! -
could you answer me 3 questions:
1/ you changed the fly wheel because of the high mileage, fair enough, why not having done the radial shaft seal (aka lip seal from Spi)?
2/ where and how much did you get that smart gearbox trolley (or gearbox jack?) ?
3/ i am looking for an affordable but good enough torque impact wrench, i see you have a milwaukee! which one i should get to do my clutch?(12v, 18v,20V)
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND ANSWERS
Farid,
:-))
Sometimes you have to agree with the saying “if it aint broke, dont fix it”. With that seal, ive taken off boxes at 200,000 miles that are perfectly sealed still, so they are pretty good. They tend to go if you get shaft play, but at that point you’ve got other things to worry about before changing the seal.
I got it online a few years back, a few manufacturers make them
I use the m18 Milwaukee and it is perfect for 99% of what i do, but that 1% is fixed with a nice big bar
@@BWSTT thanks for your answer
,🙂
Very helpful vinteo…I need this tool and can’t find :(
