I have a big list of movies but I'm not going to spam your comments. So just a couple for now. "Major Pain" is fun with Damon Wayans. Or maybe a more serious movie "Con Air."
"And why should the people listen to you?" "Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent." That burn was meant to sting. This is what the world needs. More uncontrollable laughter, smiles and good times... Mel Brooks is a national treasure and still going strong at 97 years of age.
I think it was more of a jab toward Kevin Costner who used his American accent in Prince of Thieves two years earlier. The story goes he tried an English accent early in production but the director thought it was awful so he told Costner to just speak in his normal voice. Ouch. 😄
Patrick Stuerad as the king, playing Shawn Connery (and sounding just like him!) PERFECT. Even though he is a serious actor, he has a great sense of humor.
A little Fun Fact: The actor who played Will Scarlett O'Hara would go on to play the character of Robin Hood himself in the TV Show The New Adventures of Robin Hood that aired on TNT from 1997 to 1999.
The rapping minstrels is one of the best gags in Men in Tights, but has a lot of subtlety. For context, a 'minstrel show' is when white people perform in blackface. So for Mel to have actual medieval minstrels rapping and played by black actors is a jab at racism on par with most of Blazing Saddles.
Huh, never knew that. That's pretty brilliant. Some of the subtler things with white-on-black racism are lost on me, as I'm not from that part of the world.
@@tempsitch5632Which part isn't true? That a minstrel is a medieval entertainer? Or that minstrel shows in the US consisted of blackfaced white actors portraying stereotypes and downplaying slavery? The only thing I don't know about is whether Mel Brooks did this on purpose to play on the word minstrel or not. Maybe he just thought it would be funny to mix rap with the expectations of a medieval setting. But whether he did it on purpose or not (the authour is dead after all... Not meaning Mel, he's alive afaik, just hinting at concepts of literary criticism and cultural studies here), in the end it is a joke that can be read from this film. And at least an astute observation on the part of the OP or whoever told them about it.
I first saw this in a Drive-In Theater and laughed so hard I had a growing pain spell and had to go home. In the late 90's I brought this film to class on VHS because the teacher liked Monty Python & the Holy Grail and he started fast forwarding through it in class because he was so offended. lol. Years later via cable I learned Mel Brooks had done a TV series in the 70's called something like Back When Things Were Rotten that was a send up of Robin Hood and he pretty much lifted most of the jokes from that.
Lets not forget to give props to Roger Rees who played Rottingham, as he had to memorize numerous lines in a rather dyslexic fashion before saying them again normally. A funny running gag that never failed.
Ladies, if you look closely towards the end when The Sheriff of Rottingham lays on the ground about to die, Latrine runs in yelling, "ROTTY! OOOOH, ROTTY!" & she then offers him a magic pill to take that will supposedly she's says, "I have this little magic pill," & she holds it up for Rotty to see it, if you look closely, that "magic pill" is very easily identified as a white peppermint Lifesavers mint, bc you can clearly see the hole in it's center. Lmao!
The actress who played the princess in this movie was married to John Ritter who played on THREE'S COMPANY & 8 Simple rules for dating my teenage daughter
Yes, this movie exists because of "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves." This movie has gotten more popular over the years. I saw it in the theater and barely any laughter was heard.
In the 70's Brooks had done a Robin Hood TV series that bombed and much of the jokes were reused from that. I saw the series on TV Land at some point. It's only like 6 episodes or something like that.
I thought at the time it was an okay movie. I would give it 3 hoots. Although I must say. I had to laugh out loud when Natalie described why she only gave it 4 hoots. That alone made this worth watching. Thank You Natalie, an honest, sincere and charming statement. Thank You ladies!
I liked the Kevin Costner movie too. Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are Brooks' best. Of course he was involved in the Get Smart tv series of the 1960's, which was very funny.
This is one of Mel Brooks' greatest movies, though my favorite is Spaceballs, and Blazing Saddles is probably his most classic film, though The Producers and Young Frankenstein are also up there as great classic comedic films (but really, almost everything Mel Brooks has ever done is golden). Cary Elwes is also I great actor. I believe his last name is pronounced EL-wiss. Aside from being in The Princess Bride (which you mentioned) and Hot Shots! (which you've reacted to, I think), he also had a recurring role as an art thief in the show Psych. Just an all-around fabulous actor.
Notice the magic "life saving pill" is literally a Lifesaver... Brooks initially wanted to get Sean Connery to play King Richard, but he couldn't. So Patrick Stewart came in and did it doing a Connery impression. This was actually Chappelle's first movie.
My favourite person in this is Blinkin even though i myself am not blind i somehow relate to him we share many qualities i also really like Mel Brooks rabbi character
There are some references to Other Mel Brooks movies. The actor who plays the hangman has the same role in Blazing Saddles The phrase"it's good to be the king "is from History of the World Part 1. And "walk this way " was originally used in Young Frankenstein.
Cheech & Chong Up In Smoke from 1975 is a very funny movie, it was #1 at the box office when it came out in 1975, and I still watch it every time it is on tv. And of course, all the Austin Powers movies.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights is another one of those movies that I have watched 100's of times. Your first reactions are the best. Keep up the great work, ladies!
"It's good to be the king..." You ladies need to see History of the World: Part 1 😉 It's another Mel Brooks, and tends to get overlooked in favor of his parodies.
This gem of comedy is a spoof not only of the famous movie with Costner, but also other famous medieval-adventure-Errol Flynn-Robin Hood-esque movies if the past century.
This movie is a spoof of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I saw Prince of Thieves a lot. A lot, a lot! LOL! Now I'm hooked on Robin Hood with Russell Crowe! I haven't seen Men in Tights in forever. There's a lot of stuff in this, that I forgot about.
Glad you enjoyed it, don't know why but I was not a fan of Men in Tights, prefer Space Balls, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles. If you have not seen it, would like to suggest you add Only the Lonely with the late great John Candy to your watch list.
Another great reaction video ladies. You need to watch, History of the World Part 1 and Blazing Saddles to get two of the Jokes. Keep up the great work
Dracula: Dead and Loving It, with Leslie Nielsen, would be great for the upcoming spooky season. Another Mel Brooks, it parodies a broad mix of the older draculas (Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi) as well as Bram Stoker's Dracula (with Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins).
I thought that was a disappointment. My favorite Brooks film is The Producers but not many people today can handle that one, which is funny because when he adapted it to a broadway show it was hailed all over the place at the time and that wasn't that long ago.
Excellent comedy from Mel Brooks and excellent reaction video! Btw, Mathew Porretta (Will Scarlet) portrayed Robin Hood in the '90s TV-series it got bad reception, though.
one of the favourites. even a parody of the prince of thieves movie. Glad you two enjoyed it ever watch more of Mel brooks' movies like young Frankenstein, Dracula Dead and Loving it, and spaceballs? I highly recommend checking them out. Jingle all the way would be good to watch for Christmas or the home alone 1 & 2 be the best choices. Also ever seen Scott Pilgrim vs the world? Dragonheart be great if your fans of Sean Connery is a classic and also evolution 2001
Great reactions! Loved _Prince of Thieves_ and _Men in Tights_ as a kid, though, because of the humor I probably loved _Men in Tights_ a bit more. I still repeat some of the one-liners to this day!
The actor who portrayed Little John is named Eric Allan Kramer who was great in True Romance (written by Tarantino) that came out the same year. "Hey Lee, there's something I never told you about me: I hate f*ckin' cops." He uttered those words right before a Mexican standoff. Eric Allan Kramer was also a great Alan Hale Jr. (The Skipper) in Surviving Gilligan's Island (2001). This was Dave Chappelle's first film. This film is spoofing more of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). I love the shot at Kevin Costner because he didn't speak with an English accent in Prince of Thieves. It has one of my favorite visual gags. The one when Robin Hood is singing to Maid Marian and you see his sword go up in a silhouette. ~We're men (Manly men!), we're men in tights (Yesssss!)~ Mel Brooks does a lot of gay jokes that would be too offensive today for "modern audiences" although Seth MacFarlane has been doing this for 21 seasons with Family Guy.
It's interesting that Kramer has played both Little John and Alan Hale Jr. when you consider that Alan Hale Sr. played Little John in The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn.
My favorite part in this movie is "I heard that coming a mile away :) Right-o, Blinkin, very good. Pardon? Who's talking?". You should have watch Robin Hood Prince of Thief's with Kevin Costner before watching movie because this movie spoof that movie. You should also watch other Mel Brooks movies are High Anxiety (Hitchcock classic horror movies spoof) and History Of The World (Which has the phrase "It is good to be the king")
Great reaction you two to a great comedy classic... 3 film suggestions for y'all that follow a loosely similar premise with each other (made in 3 different eras) but a different storylines for each film but all are great funny comedies with huge star studded casts in each. I recommend watching - 'It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World' (1963), 'The Cannonball Run' (1981) & 'Rat Race' (2001). Not a lot of reactors on RUclips have watched these hilarious comedies yet and they really don't know what they are missing, because those 3 films actually all made me fall out of my seat laughing so hard (no other film I have ever seen since, and I've must have seen over 1,000 plus movies in any genre, being a film buff and all, have done that to me). All 3 are that funny and definitely worth watching. You'd have a great time with any of the 3, trust me on that one (oh, if you do watch 'Cannonball Run', watch the credits because they play outtakes and bloopers during them - it was also one of the first comedy films to ever do that). Have an awesome day you two and keep the reactions coming 😁✌️
It makes me wish Brooks had found some contrived way to put a Black Sheriff 8n The Producers & Spaceballs just to keep the running Gag. I would have loved that. I also luv this channel and it's lovely hosts. 💚💜
I've seen this film countless times. That's the first time I've noticed the witch's "magic pill" at the end to save the Sheriff was a Polo mint! 😆 (Are those things sold across the pond?)
Really enjoyed watching your guys reaction to this flick. There is another Robin Hood movie with Russell Crowe from 2010 that you may wanna watch if you haven’t already. Btw, this actor who plays Robin Hood is I think the same guy who’s in the Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part I movie as well
Michelle, Natalie your reactions slay me. I cracked up along with you. Might I make a suggestion? Blazing Saddles it’s a Mel Brooks movie. It’s not politically correct by today’s standards, but it is still pretty darn funny. It’s actually one of my favorite movies of all time. I still can’t help but chuckle every time I watch the movie. PS, you both look good in orange.
The joke that England and Jersey are good friends only work in the US. If you assume that they talk about New Jersey. Jersey is an island in the English Channel.
"As my first order of business, I would like to appoint a new Sheriff... my friend Ahchoo." "A black sheriff?" "He's black?" "And why not? It worked in Blazing Saddles (1974)." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of comedic genius Dave Chappelle. What Script Fact: The scene where the Sheriff (Roger Rees) falls through the roof of Latrine's (Tracey Ullman) room and she tries to get him to have sex with her was completely improvised. Deep Cut Fact: When the newly recruited Merry Men are getting outfitted with clothing and weapons, their tights are taken out of giant plastic eggs. This is a reference to L'eggs pantyhose, which used to be sold in plastic egg packages. Traveling Gag Fact: Throughout the movie, a mole on the face of Prince John (Richard Lewis) changes position. It starts on his left cheek, then his chin, his lip, his right cheek, and finally his forehead. This is a nod to the famous "I-Gor's Hump" gag from Young Frankenstein (1974). Hollywood Accents Fact: The gag about Robin (Cary Elwes) being able to speak with an English accent is a reference to Kevin Costner's performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991). Sir Patrick Stewart plays King Richard talking in a thick Scottish accent, a reference to Sir Sean Connery's performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991). Some critics found Connery's accent inappropriate for the role, since King Richard would not have spoken with a Scottish burr (thus providing comedic fodder for Mel Brooks).
Clearly you typed your comment before listening to them, as Michelle pointed out in the intro that Dave Chappelle (with two L's) was in this, but you just could not wait to rattle off those "fun facts" and quotes.
Can I make a somewhat different comedy recommendation? It's witty and also a bit slapstick at the same time. It's called The Hudsucker Proxy. Love your content! ❤
The gag with Prince John's mole is actually a spoof of Prince of Thieves. Alan Rickman's Sheriff character in that movie has a mole on his face, and (this time on accident) it will be in different spots in some scenes due to makeup mistakes.
The interesting thing with Mel Brooks' movies is that his older movies are actually his most sublime. Think Young Frankenstein, The Producers, or Blazing Saddles. I think the key was that those older movies - while still very silly in style - were more original movies in their own right, compared to later more outright spoofy ones. As a kid I didn't know the older ones, I grew up with and absolutely adored the spoofs. I still do, but I am actually in awe of his older classics.
Fun fact. Kevin Costner was going to reprise his role as Robin Hood as part of the gag. But alas due to conflicting work he couldn't do so. But to be honest Cary Elwes is amazing.

It makes me wish Brooks had found some contrived way to put a Black Sheriff 8n The Producers & Spaceballs just to keep the running Gag. I would have loved that.
I also luv this channel and it's lovely hosts. 💚💜
Thank you!!
I've seen this film countless times. That's the first time I've noticed the witch's "magic pill" at the end to save the Sheriff was a Polo mint! 😆 (Are those things sold across the pond?)
It's literally called a Life Saver.
This is such a fun movie and cute is definitely a good description
One of the greatest comedies ever made.
Really enjoyed watching your guys reaction to this flick. There is another Robin Hood movie with Russell Crowe from 2010 that you may wanna watch if you haven’t already.
Btw, this actor who plays Robin Hood is I think the same guy who’s in the Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part I movie as well
Thank you!!
Thank you!! Yes, we are meaning to watch that at some point!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment if I remember right the hangman is the same one that they used in blazing saddles.
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment Just be warned, you're going to have FUN editing that for RUclips....
@@derangedlunaticakad.l.7030 He played that same role in almost every Mel Brooks movie.
@@IggyStardust1967 That is what concerns me with that movie. Just now careful the editing will have to be from what I hear
Not movies, but Tim Conway, "The Dentist" and "Elephant Story" will make your ribs hurt
I would like to recommend The adventures of Ford FAirlane with Andrew Dice Clay
The joke that England and Jersey are good friends only work in the US. If you assume that they talk about New Jersey. Jersey is an island in the English Channel.

"Dave."
"Is that?"
"I think so."
Me: Ooof you just did a racism 😅
That's like thinking Bill Cosby is Obama 🤣
Mistaking an actor with sunglasses on for about 2 seconds definitely isn’t a racism thing. :)
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment That was a Family Guy joke
@@darkzer0670 You never know today 😂
"As my first order of business, I would like to appoint a new Sheriff... my friend Ahchoo."
"A black sheriff?"
"He's black?"
"And why not? It worked in Blazing Saddles (1974)."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of comedic genius Dave Chappelle.
Beeve they do the same thing yo every movie with the same "facts".
Can I make a somewhat different comedy recommendation? It's witty and also a bit slapstick at the same time. It's called The Hudsucker Proxy. Love your content! ❤
Thank you!!
An early Coen bros comedy. It's quite underrated.
3 movies by mel brooks u should watch, Blazing saddles, young frankenstein, History of the world part 1 mel brooks movies are all awesome
The gag with Prince John's mole is actually a spoof of Prince of Thieves. Alan Rickman's Sheriff character in that movie has a mole on his face, and (this time on accident) it will be in different spots in some scenes due to makeup mistakes.
😂😂
definitely need to watch Blazing Saddles
Fun review. I'm glad y'all enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next one
Thank you!!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment You bet! Y'all are great. I give y'all 5 hoots.
Great movie! Classic Mel Brooks! Love the reaction!
Thanks so much!!
You're welcome!
Her name was Amy Yasbeck who plays Maid Marian
And she was in Dracula: Dead and Loving It!
Kevin Costner didn’t meet John Little in the dungeon. He met the Muslim warrior Azim (Morgan Freeman).
