The reason they are called lifesavers is because of the hole in the middle. Children had always been in danger of choking on hard candy , so lifesavers came up with the hole in the middle to allow air to pass if it got stuck in a child's throat. Therefore, the child wouldn't choke on the candy. 😊
#MelBrooks is amazingly self aware ... They're different genres... but Mel Brooks, Quentin Tarantino, and Alfred Hitchcock are "Brilliant" and "Timeless" ... There is practically nothing they do, that is "Objectively Bad" ... it might not be 'your cup of tea' ... but 'is it bad? ... really?'
A couple facts for you. When Carey Elwes says "Unlike some Robin Hoods I can speak with an English accent", that was in reference to Robin Hood Prince of Theives. Kevin Costner's English accent was so bad the director eventually told him to just speak with your regular accent. Also the hangman in this movie is the same one from Blazing Saddles. He even dressed the same.
My favorite tidbits about The Princess Bride are "Indigo and Wesley don't use doubles in the 'I'm not left handed' scene" .. .. .. Also ... Andre said he had the most fun of his life on set, because "They Don't Stare At Me" ... he was always "the most interesting thing in the room" in any room he was in ... since about 12 years old. But on that set "he was just another actor ... one of the guys ... normal" ... for the first time in forever, he got to be "another face in the crowd" ... ...
I absolutely LOVE Dom DeLuise. One of my all time favorites, and he doesn't disappoint in this movie either. Also cheers to Dave Chappelle, as this was his career film debut.
yeah they nabbed a few good names in this one! Dom is always a delight. he was amazing in SO many films clear back into the 80s when i was a kid. i can pick his voice instantly even when i cant see his face. and dave chappelle turned into a comedy giant, and im glad. he's such a goof
Dom did a guest appearance on _Stargate SG-1_ - his son Peter was a producer - and Chris Judge (Teal'c) simply could not be in shot with him because he, Judge, couldn't keep a straight face even ONCE.

For those that may not know: The wandering mole is a reference to Young Frankenstein when Marty Feldman (Igor) was moving the hump. Feldman started doing it just to mess with the others, and once they realized it, Mel Brooks made it a running gag of the film.
Two jokes you might have missed are 1) the fox joke. In 1993, the best way to message someone was to fax them a message, but since it is 12th century they have to fox the Merry Men. 2) When Latrine said I can save your life to sheriff when he got stabbed, she gave him a Lifesavers candy.
Also, when they save the kid, and then he slaps his face, screams and runs off, that was a reference to Home Alone, when MacCauley Culkin tries shaving and then slaps aftershave on, which is basically alcohol, and then screams...
And there were tons of reference directly to the Kevin Costner film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves." "You price of thieves, you..." The opening montage with the flaming arrows and burning village. The entire dungeon scene. The father Asneeze was a goof on Morgan Freeman's character in the Costner film. The "witch," etc.
Cary Elwes is one of those actors who can make you laugh with his face alone, and he's not even pulling a face as such. He just smirks, and it's hilarious.
The scene where Robin is saying good bye to Marian in the different languages had me laughing so hard in the theatres when I was young. Great movie! Awesome reaction too!
To this day I have no reason why, but the funniest part in this movie that leaves me in hilarious laughter is the Abbot walking down and the random guy, "HEY ABBOT!"..."I hate that guy!" Kills me everytime. So damn random.
It's a reference to an old comedy pairing "Abbott and Costello" (Lou Abbott and Bud Costello). One of Costellos' catchphrases was him calling out in fear "Hey LOU!!!". They made a whole bunch of movies with them meeting all the old Universal monsters, like Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolfman, The Invisible Man etc. Very popular in the late 40's early 50's, then new competition came along in the form of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. They also became too overexposed and so pretty much vanished into obscurity. Costello died in 1957 and Abbot in 1974. One of their best known gags (even today, it's still referenced) was the "Who's on first" dialogue, where Abbot is asking Costello about the names of the players on the 4 bases in a baseball game.

Similar to the Vincent Price reference, because he was a well-known horror movie actor who transitioned into comedy on the Red Skelton Show as the straight man. Took it as a challenge to get one of the all-time greats of improvisational comedy to try to break him, so he's very well loved in comedy for being a good sport.

The actor who plays the "King" is Richard Lewis. A prominent stand up comedian back in the 80's. Mel Brooks has been very generous with giving comedic roles to prominent stand up comedians. One of the reasons I love his movies.

She is one of the most brilliant impressionists in the world. She has (or had) a show in Britain where she would play so many different characters and celebrities, and nailed them all.
Mel Brooks quotes were the love language of my childhood, spoken by my elders. When I saw this in theaters as a teenager, my friends didn't get it and thought I was crazy for laughing at everything. They were obviously too cool for good comedy.

Love that you are loving and appreciating Mel Brooks films. There were a few little things you missed just because of a generational gap. One reference you missed is "unlike like other Robin Hoods, I can speak in an English accent" is referencing to "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" where Kevin Costner couldn't do an English accent as Robin Hood. Maid Marian is Amy Yazbeck, she was married to John Ritter (RIP), and yes that was her singing. Next you really must do Mel's "History of the World Part I" and you'll get a few other references.
This movie in general used the Kevin Costner Robin Hood as it's main inspiration, a lot of things in it are visually based off of or directly riffing on that one specifically.

Watching _Dracula: Dead And Loving It_ should follow watching _Bram Stoker's Dracula_ given how much of the film is direct satire of the latter. Oh, and _Dead And Loving It_ is the one for Mel Brooks onscreen...he plays Van Helsing opposite Leslie _"...and don't call me Shirley"_ Nielsen as Dracula. The ensuing hilarity is completely off the charts.

Hi, Miranda! I'm new to your channel, but it's nice to see someone else who shares my crazy sense of humor. I saw "Young Frankenstein" in the theater, and it was one of the things that inspired me to get into the movie business. Incidentally, when filming the "knockers" shot at the castle front gates, Marty Feldman, who was not in that shot, had not yet read that script page, but was sitting off to the side on a stool, and when Gene Wilder said, "What knockers!", Feldman just about busted a gut, and laughed so hard he fell off the stage! (It's a very British term.) A couple of other references are worth mentioning. Everlast is a maker of boxing gloves and apparel. Actual period chastity belts may have existed but were exceedingly rare due both to technological limitations and a lack of relevant engineering skills at the time. One thing I haven't seen anyone else mention is that the comment about Robin Hood speaking with an English accent, is a DOUBLE joke. While it does reference "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" with Kevin Costner, it's also self-referential in that, in the time period when the Robin Hood stories were supposedly set (about 1190 AD or so) the so-called "British accent" did not yet exist - it did not come into being until the first few decades of the 19th century. Up until then, everyone in England spoke with the same, traditional pronunciation, that Americans and Canadians have retained right up to today. So any real 'Robin Hoods' would have lacked a 'British accent', too. A fact which Cary Elwes, (who can do several accents) knows all too well. Lastly, since you enjoyed both several movies starring Harrison Ford, and some with Gene Wilder, you might like to check out one that stars BOTH of them simultaneously! Latrine was played by Tracey Ullman, who had a single "They Don't Know About Love" chart in the 1980s, and who later had a comedy/variety show on the very, very new Fox network. One of the regular segments of her show was a brand new animated sensation -- "The Simpsons".
I thought the Tracey Ullman show was on HBO, I think they played like the first episode or two on Fox though (as a preview). I remember thinking the Simpsons segment was the best part of the show and being sad cause I couldn't watch it. Because we didn't subscribe to HBO at the time. Naturally Simpsons became its own show eventually on Fox. Kinda like Amazing Stories, was like a Steven Spielberg version of the twilight zone on one of the big three networks. They had an animated episode called The Family Dog. Which I guess was popular enough they made it a real show that lasted maybe a season or two. They even made a 16 bit videogame for it I think.
A fun fact is that Carey Elway was called by Mel Brooks after seeing him in the princess bride and got offered this role but Carey thought it was a joke and hang-up but luckily for him Mel called back and told him he was serious

Actually no. The Archery announcer was an actor named Clement Von Franckenstein. And he did have a small (uncredited) role in Young Frankenstein. He was one of the villagers who was taunting the creature from the window as he was bound in the cell.

I have seen these Mel Brooks movies so many times. Watching you laugh so hard at all the gags takes me back to seeing them for the first time when they were new. I understand why my son is having so much fun introducing his girlfriend to all the Mel Brooks he grew up watching.

The man’s mind is amazing. He recently did an animated film that is a remake of Blazing Saddles (Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank) and he did History of the World Part II on Hulu. 36:04 the script bit is perfect placement of a prop and how they looked like something from back then. 38:08 the “12 Century Fox” a play on “20th Century Fox” and the “Hey Abbott” part was reference to the Abbott & Costello bits. Costello would always say “Hey Abbott”. 44:30 I love the King & the Rabbi’s interaction. The sad thing about him naming all the toilets John is poor Little John will have to live with that also. He didn’t do a sequel to this but he is supposed to be working on a sequel to Spaceballs called Spaceballs 3. 47:59 that’s pretty much how Mel Brooks does his movies. Love the guillotine joke. That’s perfect. Definitely should check out Paws of Fury and see how he was able to remake Blazing Saddles.

Given your love for the showtunes in these movies, I can only reiterate that you will probably love "The Producers," given how it's about well Broadway producers; the original from the 1960s even has Gene Wilder.😉 Also, Patrick Steward cameoing as King Richard is yet another reference to Prince of Thieves; you'll never guess who plays King Richard in that one.
But which version should she watch? Miranda he made the Producers in the 60s and it was a brilliant movie with a Broadway setting. Later on they made an actual Broadway production of the Producers and then a movie based on the Broadway version. Both movies are great and I’m torn about which you would like more. The new one has more musical numbers, but Gene Wilder in the original cannot be topped!

It wasn't just a YF callback, it was also yet another joke/dig at Prince of Thieves - in PoT, Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham character has a mole, and there are let's say a few inconsistencies with its placement through the movie (though obviously not to these extremes).

10:00 Just for the record, this movie is specifically referencing Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves from 1991 and starring Kevin Costner. In that movie, one of Robin’s friends is a Moor named Azeem, played by Morgan Freeman. Asneeze and his son, Achoo are referencing that character. 🍿
And Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves ends with a surprise appearance of Sean Connery as King Richard, hence the surprise appearance here of Patrick Stewart doing Sean Connery. (And undoubtedly Cary Elwes' line about being able, unlike some other Robin Hoods, to do an English accent was a dig at Kevin Costner.) There are also a few references to the old Errol Flynn movie The Adventures of Robin Hood, most notably the shots of the shadows of the hero and villain swordfighting - that's a very famous part of the climactic fight between Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone. I don't recall offhand whether you've seen Mel Brooks' History of the World Part I; Rabbi Tuck's line "It's good to be the king" is a callback to a famous recurring line from that movie.

To this day this is still the most quoted movie in my household. I personally say “I hope it’s worth the noise!” nearly every single day of my life. 😂 We even had a cat named Blinkin (rip) who’s full legal name was: “Hey Blinkin- Did you say Abe Lincoln? No I didn’t say Abe Lincoln, I said ‘hey Blinkin’, hold the reins.” Maybe a mouthful but it was always worth it when they pulled out his files at the vet. 😂 Your Brooks journey has been an absolute delight so far, they were movies that my grandpa was always so excited to introduce to each of us granddaughters and it’s been great to watch you laugh as much as we did. ❤️
I'm a cosplayer and a group of my friends and I did a Men in Tights costume group [about ten of us plus a Robin and a Maid Marion - I was Blinkin]. We met Cary Elwes while in costume for a photoshoot at a con a couple of years ago and he was surprised and delighted we had so many in the group. He also requested a photo of everyone for himself. Edit: Also, Men in Tights was a absolute favourite movie growing up. It's my fave hands down with Spaceballs being the close second.
About 15 years before this movie came out, Mel Brooks created a TV series that ended up getting cancelled. It was called "When Things Were Rotten." I loved it!!! If you can find the references to it, you'll see the similarities to this film.
Young Frankenstein is my favorite Mel Brooks movie as well. Once you run out of Mel Brooks films, I highly recommend "The Naked Gun," starring Leslie Nielsen for a somewhat similar comedy style.
Nah, next up, Monty Python! Monty Python and the Holy Grail would be a great follow-up to Men in Tights... Wonderful dumb comedy. Life of Brian and Erik the Viking are other options. Meaning of Life and Jabberwocky, as well. Time Bandits was also done at least in part by Gilliam and maybe some of the MP crew?

As a kid this was the most played Mel Brooks movie on TV, so it was my first and favorite of his. It's been replaced by Blazing Saddles and is close to tied with Young Frankenstein. But this will always have a special place for me
If you love musical themes in movies, try watching "The Blues Brothers" 😁 Fun fact: it also once held the world record for the largest number of smashed police cars in the history of cinematography! This is not a Mel Brooks movie though. If you want more of Mel Brooks, try watching "Dracula: Dead and Loving It", starring Leslie Nielsen, the same actor who played the doctor in "Airplane!". I honestly recommend almost all comedies starring Leslie Nielsen 😆

Another bit that nobody seems to have commented on; when Robin enters the feast and drops the pig on the table, it has two parts. First, it's a nod to Errol Flynn carrying in a deer in the same scene, and then, when Prince John mutters, "Trayfe". The actor playing Prince John is (and is playing the character) Jewish; and the word 'trayfe' means 'unclean', or anything that isn't kosher - which pork definitely isn't.
Lady Marian was Amy Yasbeck and she was on a sitcom Wings that was hilarious. She's also John Ritters widow 😢. Tracey Ullman was Latrine, and she had the show that started the Simpsons.

A few years before this movie came out, Nottingham ( yes, the real one in England) actually got their first ever black Sheriff ( of Nottingham) and the funny thing was that his name was Tony Robinson ,the same name as a well-known/ loved actor, that at the time was playing the Sheriff of Nottingham on a children's television show called maid marrion and her merry men.

I think one of the best parts about this is that it's full of early 90s references that most people born after that probably don't get, but even without noticing those jokes it's still hilarious. So it was perfect for its time and also aged really well. That may be the case with all Mel Brooks movies but I'm not old enough to get the era-specific jokes in the older ones lol.
I think you are right about the "goofing" part in the end. Most actors in this movie was great actors with not a lot to prove, so they just had fun. The sheriff is played by one of my favourites, mr Roger Rees. He was a member of the legendary Royal Shakespeare Company among other things and a very good actor. In this he could just have some fun.
If you want a fantastic comedy in a similar setting, I highly recommend "The Court Jester" starring Danny Kaye from 1955. In fact, almost anything starring Danny Kaye from that era is simply fantastic and hilarious - Amazing comic actor. Many of them are on par with Mel Brooks films. When you're done with Mel Brooks stuff it would be well worth your time to look up his stuff.
@@michaelmcintyre3871 I'm just at the part where she comments on the 'hey nonny nonny' and I immediately thought of The Court Jester too, because it not only has an actual baby lullabye scene, but the opening song 'never outfox the fox' with the multiple people dressed in woodsmen costumes is also pretty similar. I've been trying to find a proper reaction video to this movie for years and Miranda might just be the right person to finally grant me my wish, as I feel she would really enjoy the humor in this one, the songs, the wordplay and oh my gosh is that movie colourful!

The Court Jester is my favourite comedy. And unlike Mel Brooks works, there is NO immoral or vulgar stuff added. A good clean film! Sadly only Glynnis Johns is alive today of the main cast of the movie (well, with the possible exception of the baby whose bum bore the purple pimpernel)

i have a lot of people in my life that are MASSIVE fans of that movie! i have seen some clips of it and the humor seems very dry! i definitely wanna see that one too! i hear it was one of the first mockumentaries!
@@MoviesWithMiranda the reason is that is seems very dry is because the audience in the theatre watching it , when the movie finished though it was a documentary of a REAL band . They later found out it was fake. 😃. And the ones rolling on the floor were the actors & director. You have to also keep in mind , that there wasn't any script for the monumententary . They made everything up as it went along 😃

Now you need to watch "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"! You will appreciate Men in Tights even more, since it parodied lots of scenes (and characters) of Prince of Thieves directly. Plus it has Alan Rickman!
The comment on videography at the end tells me she needs to watch the Errol Flynn Robin Hood as well. The entire filming of this is a pastiche of The Adventures of Robin Hood
Tangential Fun Fact: Dom Deluise, who did his Marlon Brando impression as Don Giovanni, was slated to play a similar character in the criminally underrated Mathew Broderick mob comedy The Freshman. With Deluise as their safe choice, the filmmakers decided to reach out to Brando just so they could say they tried to get him. Brando unexpectedly said yes, and turned in an incredible performance.
Mel Brooks is worth more than all the politicians in the world put together. He's had a lot of sadness in his life, but has never stopped smiling. The best way to honor him is to do the same, especially in a time when many of the jokes in his movies could not be done today. When did America lose it's sense of humor?

The reason they are called lifesavers is because of the hole in the middle. Children had always been in danger of choking on hard candy , so lifesavers came up with the hole in the middle to allow air to pass if it got stuck in a child's throat. Therefore, the child wouldn't choke on the candy. 😊

A couple facts for you. When Carey Elwes says "Unlike some Robin Hoods I can speak with an English accent", that was in reference to Robin Hood Prince of Theives. Kevin Costner's English accent was so bad the director eventually told him to just speak with your regular accent. Also the hangman in this movie is the same one from Blazing Saddles. He even dressed the same.

The hangman was also in in “When Things Were Rotten”, a 1975 Mel Brooks tv show that also parodied Robin Hood. It only lasted a few episodes.

yeah they nabbed a few good names in this one! Dom is always a delight. he was amazing in SO many films clear back into the 80s when i was a kid. i can pick his voice instantly even when i cant see his face. and dave chappelle turned into a comedy giant, and im glad. he's such a goof
Dom did a guest appearance on _Stargate SG-1_ - his son Peter was a producer - and Chris Judge (Teal'c) simply could not be in shot with him because he, Judge, couldn't keep a straight face even ONCE.

For those that may not know: The wandering mole is a reference to Young Frankenstein when Marty Feldman (Igor) was moving the hump. Feldman started doing it just to mess with the others, and once they realized it, Mel Brooks made it a running gag of the film.

Cary Elwes is one of those actors who can make you laugh with his face alone, and he's not even pulling a face as such. He just smirks, and it's hilarious.
The scene where Robin is saying good bye to Marian in the different languages had me laughing so hard in the theatres when I was young. Great movie! Awesome reaction too!
To this day I have no reason why, but the funniest part in this movie that leaves me in hilarious laughter is the Abbot walking down and the random guy, "HEY ABBOT!"..."I hate that guy!" Kills me everytime. So damn random.
It's a reference to an old comedy pairing "Abbott and Costello" (Lou Abbott and Bud Costello). One of Costellos' catchphrases was him calling out in fear "Hey LOU!!!". They made a whole bunch of movies with them meeting all the old Universal monsters, like Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolfman, The Invisible Man etc. Very popular in the late 40's early 50's, then new competition came along in the form of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. They also became too overexposed and so pretty much vanished into obscurity. Costello died in 1957 and Abbot in 1974.
One of their best known gags (even today, it's still referenced) was the "Who's on first" dialogue, where Abbot is asking Costello about the names of the players on the 4 bases in a baseball game.

Similar to the Vincent Price reference, because he was a well-known horror movie actor who transitioned into comedy on the Red Skelton Show as the straight man. Took it as a challenge to get one of the all-time greats of improvisational comedy to try to break him, so he's very well loved in comedy for being a good sport.
Abbott and Costello are amazing. I've always appreciated the "Funny Man/Straight Man" trope.

Love that you are loving and appreciating Mel Brooks films. There were a few little things you missed just because of a generational gap. One reference you missed is "unlike like other Robin Hoods, I can speak in an English accent" is referencing to "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" where Kevin Costner couldn't do an English accent as Robin Hood. Maid Marian is Amy Yazbeck, she was married to John Ritter (RIP), and yes that was her singing. Next you really must do Mel's "History of the World Part I" and you'll get a few other references.

@@MoviesWithMiranda That referencing other movies is key now. Beginning with Spaceballs, Mel parodied other films which makes seeing the "source of the gags" more important. Watching _Dracula: Dead And Loving It_ should follow watching _Bram Stoker's Dracula_ given how much of the film is direct satire of the latter. Oh, and _Dead And Loving It_ is the one for Mel Brooks onscreen...he plays Van Helsing opposite Leslie _"...and don't call me Shirley"_ Nielsen as Dracula. The ensuing hilarity is completely off the charts.
Mel Brooks is by far the best satirist in Hollywood, because he brings serious social commentary to every one of his films.
My favorite interview with Mel was on the 30-year anniversary of Blazing Saddles.

Hi, Miranda! I'm new to your channel, but it's nice to see someone else who shares my crazy sense of humor. I saw "Young Frankenstein" in the theater, and it was one of the things that inspired me to get into the movie business. Incidentally, when filming the "knockers" shot at the castle front gates, Marty Feldman, who was not in that shot, had not yet read that script page, but was sitting off to the side on a stool, and when Gene Wilder said, "What knockers!", Feldman just about busted a gut, and laughed so hard he fell off the stage! (It's a very British term.)
A couple of other references are worth mentioning. Everlast is a maker of boxing gloves and apparel. Actual period chastity belts may have existed but were exceedingly rare due both to technological limitations and a lack of relevant engineering skills at the time.
One thing I haven't seen anyone else mention is that the comment about Robin Hood speaking with an English accent, is a DOUBLE joke. While it does reference "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" with Kevin Costner, it's also self-referential in that, in the time period when the Robin Hood stories were supposedly set (about 1190 AD or so) the so-called "British accent" did not yet exist - it did not come into being until the first few decades of the 19th century. Up until then, everyone in England spoke with the same, traditional pronunciation, that Americans and Canadians have retained right up to today. So any real 'Robin Hoods' would have lacked a 'British accent', too. A fact which Cary Elwes, (who can do several accents) knows all too well.
Lastly, since you enjoyed both several movies starring Harrison Ford, and some with Gene Wilder, you might like to check out one that stars BOTH of them simultaneously! "The Frisco Kid" is a lot of fun and I think you'll enjoy it!

I thought the Tracey Ullman show was on HBO, I think they played like the first episode or two on Fox though (as a preview). I remember thinking the Simpsons segment was the best part of the show and being sad cause I couldn't watch it. Because we didn't subscribe to HBO at the time. Naturally Simpsons became its own show eventually on Fox.
Kinda like Amazing Stories, was like a Steven Spielberg version of the twilight zone on one of the big three networks. They had an animated episode called The Family Dog. Which I guess was popular enough they made it a real show that lasted maybe a season or two. They even made a 16 bit videogame for it I think.
A fun fact is that Carey Elway was called by Mel Brooks after seeing him in the princess bride and got offered this role but Carey thought it was a joke and hang-up but luckily for him Mel called back and told him he was serious

Actually no. The Archery announcer was an actor named Clement Von Franckenstein. And he did have a small (uncredited) role in Young Frankenstein. He was one of the villagers who was taunting the creature from the window as he was bound in the cell.

I have seen these Mel Brooks movies so many times. Watching you laugh so hard at all the gags takes me back to seeing them for the first time when they were new. I understand why my son is having so much fun introducing his girlfriend to all the Mel Brooks he grew up watching.
16:21 the lock on the Chasity belt is shaped like a heart. I love how they point out the other Robin Hood characters don’t have an English accent. I like how you caught the mole in the movie. Some don’t realize it. 30:58 you know for some reason his response to realizing he lost the ladder is hilarious. Just the way he says “oh sh_-“. Mel Brooks is such a great writer. The man’s mind is amazing. He recently did an animated film that is a remake of Blazing Saddles (Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank) and he did History of the World Part II on Hulu. 36:04 the script bit is perfect placement of a prop and how they looked like something from back then. 38:08 the “12 Century Fox” a play on “20th Century Fox” and the “Hey Abbott” part was reference to the Abbott & Costello bits. Costello would always say “Hey Abbott”. 44:30 I love the King & the Rabbi’s interaction. The sad thing about him naming all the toilets John is poor Little John will have to live with that also. He didn’t do a sequel to this but he is supposed to be working on a sequel to Spaceballs called Spaceballs 3. 47:59 that’s pretty much how Mel Brooks does his movies. Love the guillotine joke. That’s perfect. Definitely should check out Paws of Fury and see how he was able to remake Blazing Saddles.
This gets 10 times better when you know Robin Hood folk lore. Also, Mel Brooks's character is originally Friar Tuck, but in this he's Rabbi Tuckmin and his entire thing is prohibition joke.

Given your love for the showtunes in these movies, I can only reiterate that you will probably love "The Producers," given how it's about well Broadway producers; the original from the 1960s even has Gene Wilder.😉
Also, Patrick Steward cameoing as King Richard is yet another reference to Prince of Thieves; you'll never guess who plays King Richard in that one.
But which version should she watch? Miranda he made the Producers in the 60s and it was a brilliant movie with a Broadway setting. Later on they made an actual Broadway production of the Producers and then a movie based on the Broadway version. Both movies are great and I’m torn about which you would like more. The new one has more musical numbers, but Gene Wilder in the original cannot be topped!
Springtime For Hitler was the name of tge Broadway musical within the film. tge producers wanted to con money out of investors but the musical became a success. the plot of the producers in a nutshell

It wasn't just a YF callback, it was also yet another joke/dig at Prince of Thieves - in PoT, Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham character has a mole, and there are let's say a few inconsistencies with its placement through the movie (though obviously not to these extremes).

I know the feeling…. Me and a friend were laughing so hard during a movie…. People turned around just to watch us laugh…. Maybe they didn’t get the humour either….. but we were putting on a good show of laughter‼️
The hangman from this movie was also the hangman in Blazing Saddles, such a little part but wow does he make an impact. So many funny moments and throwback jokes all over the place. Like the best Mel brooks movies, theres stuff to discover after many viewings. Can't wait for history of the world part 1.
10:00 Just for the record, this movie is specifically referencing Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves from 1991 and starring Kevin Costner. In that movie, one of Robin’s friends is a Moor named Azeem, played by Morgan Freeman. Asneeze and his son, Achoo are referencing that character. 🍿

And Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves ends with a surprise appearance of Sean Connery as King Richard, hence the surprise appearance here of Patrick Stewart doing Sean Connery. (And undoubtedly Cary Elwes' line about being able, unlike some other Robin Hoods, to do an English accent was a dig at Kevin Costner.) There are also a few references to the old Errol Flynn movie The Adventures of Robin Hood, most notably the shots of the shadows of the hero and villain swordfighting - that's a very famous part of the climactic fight between Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone. I don't recall offhand whether you've seen Mel Brooks' History of the World Part I; Rabbi Tuck's line "It's good to be the king" is a callback to a famous recurring line from that movie.
And the surprise appearance of Patrick Stewart as King Richard referenced the surprise appearance of Sean Connery as King Richard at the end of Prince of Thieves
To this day this is still the most quoted movie in my household. I personally say “I hope it’s worth the noise!” nearly every single day of my life. 😂

I'm a cosplayer and a group of my friends and I did a Men in Tights costume group [about ten of us plus a Robin and a Maid Marion - I was Blinkin]. We met Cary Elwes while in costume for a photoshoot at a con a couple of years ago and he was surprised and delighted we had so many in the group. He also requested a photo of everyone for himself.
Edit: Also, Men in Tights was a absolute favourite movie growing up. It's my fave hands down with Spaceballs being the close second.
About 15 years before this movie came out, Mel Brooks created a TV series that ended up getting cancelled. It was called "When Things Were Rotten." I loved it!!! If you can find the references to it, you'll see the similarities to this film.
Young Frankenstein is my favorite Mel Brooks movie as well. Once you run out of Mel Brooks films, I highly recommend "The Naked Gun," starring Leslie Nielsen for a somewhat similar comedy style.

As a kid this was the most played Mel Brooks movie on TV, so it was my first and favorite of his. It's been replaced by Blazing Saddles and is close to tied with Young Frankenstein. But this will always have a special place for me

If you love musical themes in movies, try watching "The Blues Brothers" 😁 Fun fact: it also once held the world record for the largest number of smashed police cars in the history of cinematography! This is not a Mel Brooks movie though. If you want more of Mel Brooks, try watching "Dracula: Dead and Loving It", starring Leslie Nielsen, the same actor who played the doctor in "Airplane!". I honestly recommend almost all comedies starring Leslie Nielsen 😆
Its so cool that you loved Young Frankenstein. Easily one of my all time favorite comedies. The line that always sticks out for me is "Werewolf!" "There Wolf..there castle"

Another bit that nobody seems to have commented on; when Robin enters the feast and drops the pig on the table, it has two parts. First, it's a nod to Errol Flynn carrying in a deer in the same scene, and then, when Prince John mutters, "Trayfe". The actor playing Prince John is (and is playing the character) Jewish; and the word 'trayfe' means 'unclean', or anything that isn't kosher - which pork definitely isn't.
Lady Marian was Amy Yasbeck and she was on a sitcom Wings that was hilarious. She's also John Ritters widow 😢. Tracey Ullman was Latrine, and she had the show that started the Simpsons.
Mel brings Amy back for Dracula. She's so funny with that breathy posh accent.

If you enjoyed this then i highly recommend watching cannonball run. Its not mel Brooks but the comedy is still amazing and its got an incredible cast. Including dom deluise and burt renoylds

A few years before this movie came out, Nottingham ( yes, the real one in England) actually got their first ever black Sheriff ( of Nottingham) and the funny thing was that his name was Tony Robinson ,the same name as a well-known/ loved actor, that at the time was playing the Sheriff of Nottingham on a children's television show called maid marrion and her merry men.

As someone who grew up watching Mel Brooks movies, I am SO HAPPY to see someone who is reacting to these FREAKIN' AWESOME COMEDY movies!!! I'm laughing at every single one of your reactions, and.... basically.... rewatching them in my own mind (yes, I've seen them that many times)! I just recently found you when you reacted to Blazing Saddles, which I LOVE, subscribed to ya, and have been SO HAPPY that you've watched these other movies of his!!!
Keep going, I've got to go back and see what else you've reacted to that I remember, and I truely am surprised that there is a line of Young Frankenstein figurines!!!! Marty Feldman (Igor) is freakin' AWESOME!!! I love him in his other movies as well!!!
I think one of the best parts about this is that it's full of early 90s references that most people born after that probably don't get, but even without noticing those jokes it's still hilarious. So it was perfect for its time and also aged really well. That may be the case with all Mel Brooks movies but I'm not old enough to get the era-specific jokes in the older ones lol.
Yeah the "White Men Can't Jump", Reebok Pump shoes, and the Macaulay Culkin references are completely missed 30 years later
I think you are right about the "goofing" part in the end. Most actors in this movie was great actors with not a lot to prove, so they just had fun. The sheriff is played by one of my favourites, mr Roger Rees. He was a member of the legendary Royal Shakespeare Company among other things and a very good actor. In this he could just have some fun.
If you want a fantastic comedy in a similar setting, I highly recommend "The Court Jester" starring Danny Kaye from 1955. In fact, almost anything starring Danny Kaye from that era is simply fantastic and hilarious - Amazing comic actor. Many of them are on par with Mel Brooks films. When you're done with Mel Brooks stuff it would be well worth your time to look up his stuff.
Since she likes musicals, she might enjoy "White Christmas."
Actually, The Court Jester does have a couple musical numbers in it. Even starts with one.
@@michaelmcintyre3871 I'm just at the part where she comments on the 'hey nonny nonny' and I immediately thought of The Court Jester too, because it not only has an actual baby lullabye scene, but the opening song 'never outfox the fox' with the multiple people dressed in woodsmen costumes is also pretty similar.
I've been trying to find a proper reaction video to this movie for years and Miranda might just be the right person to finally grant me my wish, as I feel she would really enjoy the humor in this one, the songs, the wordplay and oh my gosh is that movie colourful!
@@adrianaheiler9794 I really would put Court Jester up against almost any Mel Brooks movie as just as funny. The only difference is not having the obvious 4th wall breaks and parody level jokes.
The Court Jester is my favourite comedy. And unlike Mel Brooks works, there is NO immoral or vulgar stuff added. A good clean film! Sadly only Glynnis Johns is alive today of the main cast of the movie (well, with the possible exception of the baby whose bum bore the purple pimpernel)

i have a lot of people in my life that are MASSIVE fans of that movie! i have seen some clips of it and the humor seems very dry! i definitely wanna see that one too! i hear it was one of the first mockumentaries!
@@MoviesWithMiranda the reason is that is seems very dry is because the audience in the theatre watching it , when the movie finished though it was a documentary of a REAL band . They later found out it was fake. 😃. And the ones rolling on the floor were the actors & director. You have to also keep in mind , that there wasn't any script for the monumententary . They made everything up as it went along 😃
1:10 Just helping out here: The "assistant with the Schwanzstucker line" is Inga, played to perfection by Terry Garr. The "He vass my boyfriend!" line was delivered by Frau Blucher, played by the immortal Cloris Leachman (RIP).
Terry Garr said that line then had to ask Mel Brooks what it was, she was so innocent.

Now you need to watch "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"! You will appreciate Men in Tights even more, since it parodied lots of scenes (and characters) of Prince of Thieves directly. Plus it has Alan Rickman!
The comment on videography at the end tells me she needs to watch the Errol Flynn Robin Hood as well. The entire filming of this is a pastiche of The Adventures of Robin Hood
Tangential Fun Fact: Dom Deluise, who did his Marlon Brando impression as Don Giovanni, was slated to play a similar character in the criminally underrated Mathew Broderick mob comedy The Freshman. With Deluise as their safe choice, the filmmakers decided to reach out to Brando just so they could say they tried to get him. Brando unexpectedly said yes, and turned in an incredible performance.
Cracking the nuts with his bare hand was definitely a reference to The Freshman! I agree, so underrated!
Mel Brooks is worth more than all the politicians in the world put together. He's had a lot of sadness in his life, but has never stopped smiling. The best way to honor him is to do the same, especially in a time when many of the jokes in his movies could not be done today. When did America lose it's sense of humor?
