On an additional note, Mel Brooks did plan on a sequel to this, but Rick Moranis's wife died, and he took a long break from acting. Moranis would have returned for the sequel anyway, but his asking price was higher than the studio was willing to go (He wanted a payday high enough to provide great opportunities for his kids in his absence). A piece of trivia about the movie ...When Mel Brooks approached George Lucas about making this movie, Lucas had a couple of stipulations ... So, Mel Brooks dressed Lone Star as Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford's other iconic role).

Mel Brooks went to George Lucas to get his blessing to do this movie. His only condition was no merchandising as spaceballs action figures would be too close to star wars. Mel had no plans to do any merchandising but that condition gave him the idea to make it a gag in the movie. By all accounts George Lucas loved the movie. Rick Moranis ad-libbed the scene playing with the dolls. They were part of the merchandising gag and just grabbed them and he did that.

High Anxiety is one of my favorite Mel Brooks movies for the simple reason that it is one of his only movies where Mel himself plays the lead. Can't recommend it enough.

    • @melenatorr

The problem with "High Anxiety" is that you really need to know your Hitchcock to get what's going on: the first time I saw it I hadn't seen anything other than "Psycho" and the "The Birds". "High Anxiety" came off as dull and nonsensical. After seeing a few Hitchcock movies, I got it and thought it was really, really funny and also well done.
I like the original "Producers": it's clean, spare and wastes very little time in getting us from one point to another; the script and the priceless cast sell themselves deftly and with dry, dark humor. The re-make is wonderful but, I think, overdone; and whether or not he's dated, LSD from the original is part of what completes things, and not having him in the newer version unmakes things for me a bit.

By the way, not idea if anyone mentioned this, but that bit about merchandising is actually funnier if you realize it's a multi-level joke.
First, it's a reference to the fact that when Lucas made the original film, he used his own money. For the second, he was negotiating to keep control of the scrip, and he basically told them "I don't want any bonuses, I don't want more money...I just want full control, and I'll keep merchandising rights". At the time, they thought he was crazy because merchandising wasn't a huge THING. Now, of course, the joke's on them, because that's how Lucas made so much.
The second part is that Lucas actually loved the ide of making Space Balls, and gave Mel Brooks his blessing, with the single exception that he couldn't sell any merchandise, since it would look so much like Star Wars merchandise. Of course Brooks was fine with this, but also of course he HAD to make a joke about it. The man is a comedy genius.

When Mel Brooks asked George Lucas for permission to spoof Han Solo he said yes, but you can't dress him in the same outfit, so Mel Brooks dressed him like Indiana Jones.

The "When did we get to Disneyland" line is even funnier post-Disney owning Star Wars world.

The captain of the guard who says "these are not them, you've captured their stunt doubles" is a young Stephen Tobolowsky, has like nearly 300 credits on IMDB as of this writing.

Fun fact to the "jam scene": To disturb or interupt signals in radiocommunication, you use a so called "jammer". That makes the scene so hilliarous funny.
Also nice reactionvideos you make, thanks for that, I love to see people laughing heartly.

Wanna hear something funny? I watched this movie before watching any star wars movie as a kid (like 6 or 7yo). Pizza The Hutt scared the sh*t out of me, it gave me nightmares hahahaha...
Oh and that little alien at the end bursting out of that guy as well (obviously I had no idea about the Alien movies)
For some reason, for a while, I always related both the alien and the pizza thing together. So in my silly child mind, if you ate pizza, there was a chance that a small alien would burst out of your stomach/chest. Oh boy hahahahaha

George Lucas said Lonestar cannot dress like Han Solo, so Mel Brooks dressed him up like Indiana Jones.
