  • This DIY covers replacing the radiator in my 1997 Ford Explorer. My Explorer has the 5.0 V8, but the procedure is very similar in most other explorers as well as other trucks.
Thanks go out to Joe for standing behind the camera and lending a hand with some of the work in this video!

Great video dude, I followed as you directed and everything went sweet, another guy said that a/c hoses and transmission lines had to be taken off, more unnessesary work and more expensive. Thanks againg

No problem! Glad the video helped. Taking all the other lines off certain my can be helpful but not necessary if you’re careful!

Just followed your steps on my 01 Explorer Sport. You're right, the fan and even fan shroud didn't need to be removed to do it. Once shroud was unbolted i simply placed it over the fan, then removed the radiator bolts, unhooked the piping and the radiator slid out. Easy easy easy. Thanks for the video.

Swapped out my radiator today with no issue what so ever. Much easier doing it the way in your video than to remove the fan. Thanks again!

Just a little helpful info, if you're going to add water...ALWAYS use distilled water.

  • @funnyfarm5555

A trick for your coolant is to take your first empty straight antifreeze bottle, add half of the antifreeze from the second new bottle then fill both with water, Mark side of bottle 50/50 and date (9/2018). Now you have a bottle of premixed so when you are topping off fluids when changing oil or before a trip it is already mixed, just pour. save last empty 50/50 container for when you get another full new one and repeat. System works great.

great video , shouldn't you add distilled water , because of the minerals in water ??

To get to the lower transmission line is a pain. If you remove the battery and the battery tray (has 3 bolts on a 98) it makes access to the line a lot easier.

Matthew Reed, I just watched a different video & the guy removed the fan. It looked like a bitch to do. I'm glad I watched your video with you just disconnecting the shroud & setting it back. Don't let these negative comments on here get to ya, you provided the video, unlike these morons that just want to flap their gums with negative comments. Thanks again for sharing your video, wish me luck.

Glad I could be some help. And I figure if someone watched enough of the video to make a negative comment, they still watched it, so how bad could it be.

Cool video. I did my radiator today on similar model and ran into some things...1) the condenser on my mountaineer is stuck to the radiator by clips on each side, the last clip on the battery side is very difficult to get off, I finally used a prying tool (it was just me, no help) and got the radiator to shift out of it. I by passed the battery side clip when reinstalling new radiator, it wasn't worth the truble. 2) The bottom transmission line is very difficult. I used a flare wrench, but ended up taking the battery out for more room. Finally got it off, but it is just as hard to get back in. When I loaded up w/ new coolant, the bottom trans line started leaking, I did not have it screwed in tight enough. Very hard to do without a long wrench. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful!

Awesome! My 1999 Mercury Mountaineer is leaking fluid and this is exactly what I needed to watch, thanks for the video. Are you guys in Ohio like around Massillon? That neighborhood looked familiar.

I know this is an old video but I was wondering how you slid the A/C condenser out of the guides on the radiator. Others I have talked to said both have to come out together. So the A/C system has to be taken down. Great job by the way.

If I remember correctly, there are plastic clips that hold it on to the radiator that you can just undo.

Thanks a lot for your video! I learned how to clean my radiator (1997 Ford Explorer XLT). I removed it and cleaned with the rain of hydro-wash machine; and it allows me also to use WD-40 to clean the air conditioning radiator.

I gave you you a thumbs up but you could've done a better job. Havin your cam/mic four or five feet away on a windy day makes it very difficult to hear you and that's a big reason for makin the vid, correct??
You apparently have editing capabilities yet we're not seeing very much up close shots on the disconnecting and connecting with both of your hands as your assistant holds the camera.
Napa is a very good brand and full strength is the way to go!!!
    Premix is for IDIOTS!!!
I agree with the other comments that insist on using distilled water! 👍👍👍
And finally, that used coolant should be PRISTINE. If you and other viewers have a stress crack in the same spot on the exterior of your radiator then there could be interior stress cracks also. That will cause intermixing coolant with transmission fluid. Not so bad for the already damaged radiator, DEVASTATING FOR THE TRANSMISSION!!!
How about some input on how the ol exploder held up weeks and months after this video was made???

Perry Odonell I appreciate the feedback! At the time I didn’t have a camera with mic capabilities (I still don’t). I usually tried to film on non windy days if I couldn’t use a garage but unfortunately that’s not always an option like in this video. At the time I didn’t realize how bad the wind noise would be and I actually cut out a lot of extra video because you just couldn’t hear what I was saying. The original video was supposed to be 5-10 minutes longer. The explorer gave me no problems after this but I did sell it about a year later. I’m still on the lookout for another good 5.0 model but have yet to find one as good as this. If it weren’t for the rust I would probably still have it today!

I wanted to know precisely how to remove those bottom clips that hold the fan shroud to the radiator, but the video skipped over that most important step and the only comment made was to just remove the top 2 bolts, and the bottom 2 clips. I know the bottom clips need to be removed. I just need to know HOW to remove them.

I'm about to spend $300 for someone to change my upper & lower intake gaskets. Bank 1 & bank 2 are running lean. Checked all the vacuum hoses, changed a couple of bad ones, replaced my fuel filter but still getting the same 2 codes running lean. Wish it could be something simple but I don't know of any other possibilities other than replacing the intake gaskets..

It didn't show how to get the condenser out of the other to female slots on the radiator. The slots are on the cap side of the radiator. It's almost impossible!!!

+Chad Woodard Yes, had to cut off the radiator side of the clips with a long pruning saw. New radiator has the part you cut off on it anyway.

Mine is a 2000. Has another idiot giant plastic clip holding the radiator to the condenser on the driver's side in the middle. Lots worse to get out. I haven't seen anyone with any suggestions on how to get it out. I have one on the bottom and one on the top on both sides, plus one in the middle-not like yours...hmmmmm. Going to get in there with a long pruning saw and cut off the radiator part of the clip. New radiator has one anyway.
