      Mine too!!! I’ll admit….I wasn’t really into the GBA that much a few years ago. I hadn’t even been born when it came out. But then I finally started playing some games…and I became absolutely obsessed with it! Now it’s one of my favorite consoles of all time, only second to the Switch! 😄

    The DS homebrew scene is really dope. It's a bit different from other homebrew scenes tho because there are no physical releases and most of them work best with a R4/ Flashcart.

    • @RetroBreak

      Any idea why there aren’t any physical releases?

      @@RetroBreak I think that it has 3 technical reasons.
      First of all, the DS has proper security. It got broken, yes, but cartridge communication is encrypted. Older consoles didn't use cartrige communication encryption. Cartridges that work with DSi/3DS have to include a decent amount of retail games. That can result in legal issues.
      Secondly, the DS scene developed in a different way. The DS scene began with roms that were started from slot-2 flashcarts and they always had an SD card. DS homebrew uses DLDI (SD access) to save. They don't write to save chips inside of cartridges.
      On the other hand, this has the advantage that homebrew can manage files on the SD and there is basically unlimited storage (big DSCraft worlds can be 256MB in size. That's half the size of the biggest official DS games and that's just the file size of one editable world).
      Thirdly, there has never been a big market for single-cart DS bootleg games. DS flashcarts are very cheap compared to older consoles because they don't need big internal storage. The maximum internal storage of "normal" DS flashcarts was 4MB while normal GBA flashcarts need 32MB of internal storage for most ROMs. That drives the price. Bootleg DS cartridges can be more expensive to produce than flashcarts while they have less features. There are even "bootleg" carts that are flashcarts in disguise because flashcarts are so cheap.
      Also, writing to the few DS bootlegs that exist never was figured out.

    Powder is the first homebrew game I ever played that made me *immediately* go out of my way to pay the dev for (its been free on his website for years & is playable on almost every system you can imagine)
    That game is back from when roguelike meant *roguelike* & is a must play for people who like Nethack, Rogue, Angband, but want pretty graphics (although there are ASCII options too!) + quality of life features

    • @RetroBreak
      @RetroBreak  Год назад +3

      It’s great! Love that it doesn’t shy away from what makes a classic Rogue game! It’s hardcore, and you can tell the developer really cared about making a good deep game!

    How did a physical Powder fly under my radar for this long? I spent so much time with it on GBA and then also a later '3rd party' dreamcast port--that's probably close to 20 years ago now, because at some point I became really old. 🤣 Having a Powder manual is potentially useful.

    This sunday I happened to have more spare time, so I thought I'd check out the news.
    I still have my Gameboy Advance, and some games, unfortunately I lost a few of them over the years. I still have boxes for some releases. Good to see that it still has some love. Even though I havent spend much time with Nintendo consoles, and I havent played that much handheld games, the Gameboy Advance still is my favourite handheld console, with dozens of great games. The PSP I got a few years later has not made me that interested, despite being much more powerful and modern.
    Overall I will always remember hours spent with The Sims, Urbz and Harry Potter 3. Surprisingly all of these games soundtrack was made by the same person, Ian Stocker. He is on RUclips, everyone remembering his tunes can say hello to him!
    Thank you for doing the review! Im definetly hoping for the completed port of OpenLara coming!

    Video idea: “Out of Print Homebrew games that need rereleases” indie games that developers don’t intend to make physical copies anymore, but perhaps could be rereleased by a larger publisher like incube8??

    • @RetroBreak
      @RetroBreak  Год назад +2

But you backed it for something like £30 and got a code for switch, backed it for £60 and got switch dl code and a gba rom. Backed it for more money and got a physical gba cart. Can't remember the game though. Must have been good though because i remember being tempted.
