The Homebrew Games Summer Showcase is a celebration of all the games in development for old consoles. For the purpose of this showcase, we define a homebrew game as a videogame being developed for a retro home console that came out before the year 2000, or for a handheld console that came out before 2004. Teams of any any size or budget were welcome.
If you are new to the homebrew scene: "welcome"! You are in for a treat! Use the link above to follow some of the devs making stuff that interests you, and follow along with the development of the next wave of homebrew highlights.
    ---
Special thanks to Larson Kilstrom from Atavist Games who created the Summer Showcase overlays you see in this video! Their amazing looking Game Boy Color game, "The Fallen Crown" is featured in the video and coming to KICKSTARTER soon. Please check out more about them at www.atavistgames.com!

Thank you so much for checking out the amazing work being done by the homebrew community!
    Corrections:
6:00 - Cubeat was listed as "Virtual Boy | 2024" but should be "Game Boy (Color) | 2023" - nickfa.ro
16:53 - Aqua Kitty '93 was listed as "Genesis" but it is also coming to "Turbo Grafx-16" - www.tikipod.com
If you spot any errors in the video or accompanying spread sheet of games, please leave a reply with the correction, and I will add a note about it here.

Great showcase, but um, who are the artists for Neon Gaming, Best Time, and Stranger Things??? I tried looking up say "Title of the song" then "Song" next to the title in the description. And unfortunately I cannot find it.
The one I especially am looking for is the one at 15:15.
EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. Turns out the song that I mentioned the timepoint is NOT listed in the description. It's called "Digital Love" by Alexi Action. Your welcome.

@@obvious_giraffe8386 I find the best way is to just follow the devs on Twitter. There isn't really a great website that covers everything homebrew at the moment. You can find all the games in the show here though: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HfUK3t1MHYiVXiTYFIe2vAK-VvLf1ehrqU1CjqJmVNs/edit?usp=sharing

@@SuperFlashDriver I can try to put together a list. I was hoping RUclips's autodetection would cover everything, but it seems to be missing some.

MASSIVE thanks to Matt for putting this together, and for going out of his way to spotlight so many amazing projects. And massive thanks and congrats to ALL of the amazing devs out there keeping our favorite consoles alive and well!
Crazy fact: our Sega Genesis game Go For It! is the only fighting game featured in the video. We're doing our best to make a great game that can hold up to the 16-bit classics. It hasn't been easy, but we're giving it our all! Footage at 23:55 for anyone interested! :)

I know this sounds a little silly, but games are so hard to make and every time I see a reel of games, its like on one hand I'm super hyped but on the other hand, half of the games may not even make it to the finish line and the other half, may not even play well or be fun, but I am sure there will be a few gems in here.
It also gets me that there are all of these modern games, and that's great, but there are so many more games being made than what the see on the shelf at Wallmart or Target. And many times, its THESE games which are the most interesting to play.

Also while this may have taken more work, you could have put all of the same platforms into their own sections. Like Gameboy games are all together, Genesis games are all together, NES games are grouped all together, this way I can keep track of which console the games are for. When its mixed up, its hard to remember which system the game was being developed for.

It wouldn't really be lore work, but this was intentional. I went back and forth on which is better, but ultimately I went with the because otherwise it becomes basically: NES, GAMEBOY, OTHER

@@MattHughson I hadn't seen that site before! I grab a lot of the retro titles that show up on KS, and I pick up everything that gets sold by Piko, MegaCat, Broke Studios, AtariAge, PixelHeart, and all the retro stuff that Limited Run and IAm8Bit put out. So I guess this is just one more site I need to get on the mailing list for so I don't miss out!
Sad that Twitter became such a cesspool because I used to follow a bunch of devs there (including you) and that's how I heard about a lot of games like Super Tilt Bros and Nobelia.

Amazing showcase of amazing creators! Here are (some of) my thoughts about these games:
5:15 While its graphics are somewhat basic, that I can't immediately tell what this game is about and how it's supposed to be played makes it fascinating and oddly appealing.
7:40 I half-jokingly proposed a Minecraft-like game for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer before as the game relies exclusively on quadrilaterals for its 3D graphics, which is the basic primitive for the system, but never expected anyone to actually do it! It's especially impressive given the system's memory size.
8:05 Cool to see a real NES Paint program. (The closest thing I can think of is *shudders* Color a Dinosaur...)
8:35 Very colorful for the Atari VCS/2600!
9:35 _Holy shit_ that's a lot of sprites for the NES, and big ones, too!
14:55 Well, it does look muddy... using the system's weaknesses as strengths!
16:10 How the hell is that skull walking!? Or doing... well, anything??
19:30 An Atari Jaguar game with good art direction? That's fairly rare.
20:45 I rather like the 1-bit art direction of this game-will really make it legible on the real hardware.
21:00 BEEG SPRITE!!! (Yes, I am aware it is probably actually part of the background, as well as some of those in Over Obj, but still.)
21:35 Wow, I didn't think there was enough RAM on the NES to make a battle simulator like that reasonably possible.
    21:55 That developer name... LOL
22:40 Somewhat like Isle of Tune, its apparently unusual gameplay and premise makes this game very intriguing.
25:35 Amazing mixed-res graphics! Really good use of the SNES' high-resolution interlaced mode.
27:30 A TRUE FURRY GAME, YES!
Finally, it's great that a lot of these actually make the NES look good, rather than like a mid-autumn forest in the evening, an algal bloom in a toxic waste dump, or something similarly monotonous and garish like some contemporaneous games.

Some bangers coming for the GB, GBC, and GBA. The NES and Genesis have some to but not nearly as many. Also I can’t believe that some people are making SNES games! They’re usually few and far between as I’ve heard it’s pretty difficult to code a game for it.
