Turok
this is a playable prototype of a cancelled Turok game, it looks to be an attempt at a port of the N64 classic… Developed by Similis. In 2009, the website Hidden Palace managed to get the rooms and now they are available to play online and see what could have been for yourself!
Even though this is clearly a very early demo, it’s pretty impressive to see it running on the system, it’s an interesting glimpse of what could have been!
There’s actually three slightly different versions of the demo. The standard demo, and one called Bright version, which was made to compensate for the lack of a backlight on the original GBA system, and one with a logo and a slightly earlier version of the demo.
www.unseen64.net/2009/05/30/t...
It was cancelled in favour of the 2D Turok game we ended up with on the GBA, which was clearly much easier for the developers to make on the system.
Virtua Fighter
This one was coded by the famous Jim Bagley, who made many classic C64 and Spectrum games!
www.retrogamer.net/profiles/d...
He’s a very talent developer, and has actually released a few other GBA home-brew games which I might cover in a future episode!

www.gbadev.org/developers.php...
Celeste
As well as this amazing GBA remake, the original Pico 8 version of the game (Which believe it or not I actually prefer over the 2017 release), is actually fully playable on the GBA too thanks to another talented programmer! I wonder if more Pico 8 games will get ported to the GBA?
gbatemp.net/threads/release-c...
Meat Boy
Made by BomberDev, this is a really good version of the classic indie game Super Meat Boy. I was expecting it to be the same as the original Flash game, but this is actually closer to the more modern version! Unfortunately there’s only a few levels in this version so far, but it controls really well and if the developer makes more levels I can see this becoming very popular in the home-brew community!
bomberdev.itch.io/pocket-meat
Flappy Bird
A very faithful port of the IOS and Android game, this one actually seems like it got a physical release back when it was first made in 2014!

Flappy Bird for Game Boy Advance / SP / Micro
Resident Evil 2
Tech demo made by Daylight studio, an Italian company to pitch their Blue Roses engine. By this point in time Capcom had lost interest in the viability of GameBoy ports, and the pitch was rejected.
The blue roses engine is actually really impressive. There’s a lot of other tech demos from the company but unfortunately I couldn’t find any other rooms, just pre recorded videos. Even so, what’s being shown is incredible for the GBA! It’s just a shame not much came of it…

Thank you for watching, I’ll be taking a look at some home-brew games soon, if you know any good ones you’d like to talk about, please let me know in the comments!

I made a follow up to this video featuring another 15 GBA Demakes! Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/6iIUdCzmAzk/видео.html
Did you see my 3D Minecraft on the Game Boy Advance? You might like it.
I saw Elliott Coll play it but haven’t had a chance to try it myself yet, I definitely will! Great job! Really impressive :D
virtua fighter demake = mind blown !!!
I mean, if we have Tekken, then why not Virtua Fighter
Tekken was more 2.5d this is full 3d, where can I dl rom?
Actually Raylight Studio's Blue Roses engine was used for a number of officially released GBA games: Wing Commander Prophecy, Smashing Drive, and Big Mother Truckers. All 3 are extremely impressive GBA demakes, though Wing Commander has a nearly impossible escort mission about 1/3 the way through the game unfortunately (managed to beat it once, somehow, and finish the game, but then never got passed it again).
Holy crap, that celeste demake is amazing.
Fantastic video! Really loved that Resi 2 rom, really impressive what that engine managed to get out of the GBA hardware. Love your new intro too! Keep up the good work Retrostink!
How do you not have more subs wtf
No idea! haha. I just keep making videos and people are slowly starting to find me :)
@@RetroBreak keep up the good work! I love the videos!
Many thanks for taking time to link everything below!
Amazing! Celeste Demake! That looks surprisingly close to the original, and looks really responsive. Celeste is a huge inspiration for some of my music I’ve written, truly a great game. Also, meatboy looks great! Do they have the finish screen where it shows all your tries in one go? Wonder how many runs the GBA could handle with that many moving sprites...
Thanks for using my music in your video Nick!!!
Sadly meat boy didn’t have the ending screen for levels :( I was a bit disappointed they didn’t at least have the last 2 or 3 attempts playing.. would be interesting to see how many the GBA could handle!
Amazing vid mate! Really great watch and liking that new interface you have. Very cool 👍😎☕🏴
Ty so much for making this video. I stumbled across it and my whole drive home I was excited to watch it.
Hope you enjoyed it! :D
Less than 1k views?
Really fun vid, I'll continue to watch what you do on YT.
Awesome! Instant subscribe. Any 3D always impressed me on GBA.
God i absolutely LOVE the chunky polygons of virtua fighter on the gba. Something about that aesthetic appeals to me so much, the creativity it takes to use such a small amount of polygons and still have it translate as the intended object.
Cool to see Flappy Bird in your video. Jay is a good friend of mine and gave me the Flappy Bird cartridge, shown in the djedditt video, for my birthday. I still play it occasionally. :P
Great video man! It’s amazing to see how good developers can make these games look. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw one of MegaMan 11 in the future.
I love when handhelds get a demake or port of a console game, that stuff tends to really push the capabilities of the hardware, and I really enjoy seeing the creative workarounds the devs use to make the game playable.
Cool! Thanks for this - those games look great :) - please share a link to the new Celeste demake (not the Pico-8 version for GBA but the new preview).
There are a few games that were made on the blue roses engine. Velez and Duval (sp) made a couple GBA games with it. I can’t remember the names but I’m sure someone out here knows.
That’s cool! I couldn’t find any.. if anyone knows what they are, please let me know :)
Found out what games used the engine: Wing Commander Prophecy, Smashing Drive and Ozzy & Drix
Pretty sure Velez and Deval had their own engine separate from the one made by Raylight. While it is a really good engine, it is more of a pseudo 3D approach that relies on rotating sprites and backgrounds, my guess is that it probably uses some sort of vector drawing method to make the background look 3D. The Blue Roses engine, on the other hand, features fully 3D textured polygons, though their games end up not running as smoothly because of this.
I love Gameboy and DS Demakes. Please show more
Rip my gba, Which was *ONE* day art. Was ready to look for homebrew games that you mentioned.
I see entire video, you is awesome! Very very very good!
Wow, that RE2 version looks impressive. I didn't think the system would be capable of handling that game so well. I imagine that if you'd play it on an actual gba with the small screen it would look even better, since you wouldn't notice the small resolution so much.
Yeah, playing it on the actual GBA it really looks almost identical, apart from the slightly awkward animations, which would have been fixed before a full release I’m sure..
Amazing! Gained a subscriber!
Great video as usual Sir. I love the GBA and always felt it never achieved it's potential. This proves me right! I wonder if these ROMs would work on the Retro Freak? Hmm. Thank you!
Thanks! Really enjoyed making this one! :D They should work find on the Retro Freak, they will just show as "unknown game" I think :)
@@RetroBreak where an i dl vf gba?
This channel is criminally underrated
Thank you for this content
That's exactly channel I searched for !
I already knew about this GBA conversion of Resident Evil 2 years ahead.
Amazing!
These games look incredible for the GBA. It would have blown my mind to see the little handheld do stuff like this back in the day. It's a shame they didn't become full releases.
You all probably dont care at all but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly lost my login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me!
@Atlas Gideon instablaster :)
@Grey Salvador thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Grey Salvador It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my account !
@Atlas Gideon glad I could help xD
I really enjoyed the Tony hawks demakes on GBA
Me too.
I really wish a new retro style console would come out. It could run a lot of the indie games or run games like streets of rage 4. Maybe with sponsors and community support it could get some remakes of classics and some new ones. With multiplayer support it could be the ultimate retro console!
I suppose that’s the Invellivision Amico, but no one seems interested :(
So much potential. It sucks when consoles get abandoned once the developers start to master the process.
id love a pico 8 video !
That GBA port of Flappy Bird seriously intrigues me.
I wonder if there any other GBA games that require you to hold the console sideways.
(And if not, then I’d like to see more indie devs take advantage of it.)
bluerose engine seems amazing..that resident evil demake is on top!
these demakes pretty impressive😮
celest looks like i can spend with that game in years
If you have Namco Museum on GBA it has a vertical screen mode like that Flappy Bird.
There is a guy that is working on a ground up demake for super Mario sunshine on the Nintendo DS if you wanted to check it out.
Wow that sounds amazing! Will look it up!
I can't even find out much about the Celeste demake, when I try to search for it all that comes up is the Pico 8 version and a few videos
Hey, it's Ragnar Lothbrok's monk friend. Whatup
There were a few Blue Roses games I think. Only Smashing Drive I can think of off the top of my head
Cool! With the popularity of Celeste maybe it could get kickstarted in to the full game with a physical release? With the developers consent ofc.
The resident evil 2 tech demo said 1998 and 1999 at the bootup :o Kinda early isnt it?
That would be great if they could get it Kickstarted and fund development of the full game for GBA! :D And 1998 is the original release date, the GBA one I showed was made in 2003 so I guess they just reused the original title screen
Warioland 4 had sideways baseball
The blue roses engine did get a few published games
RE2 looks insane!
STUNNING!! How could could you reach to these games. I'm searching regularly and I have never run into any of these..
Great show, man
I want to see how they look on the original reflective lcd gba
Fingers crossed they finish Celeste!
I ported some nes games over to snes, if you want them I could put a link up.
One demake
I think would 100% be possible to make is door to phantomile
The demake of the remake of "Celeste" looks nice. Do you know the Gamebuino Meta? I am coding a "Helltaker" demake on it, called "Demon Girls".
monkey ball is the best game of my childhood
I Love demakes
Mate where did you get your SD Launcher memory card for GameCube? I have the Player but I've never had the options to get the best pixel quality, and anybody I've asked where to get has stayed quiet. PS: You play the WarioLand 4 mini games sideways too.
Hi, I got the SD Launcher from Codejunkies website:
www.codejunkies.com/Products/SD-Media-Launcher__EF000580V.aspx
Then copied the GB Interface software from here onto the SD card:
www.retrorgb.com/gameboyinterface.html
Then get Swiss from here:
github.com/emukidid/swiss-gc/releases
Put that on the SD card too, then put the SD card into the gamecube, boot it up with the SD Launcher disc, open Swis.dol then choose the right version of GBI and it will apply all the extras you need for different outputs and scaling :) Hope that helps!
@@RetroBreak It does! Thank you sir!
My pleasure! Also sounds like I need to do some research into sideways playing GBA games! Never got far in Wario 4 because my cart didn’t save :(
Turok GBA kinda hurts my eyes a little!
Dude can u send the trusted link to download each of this rom demake?
I want to download it but affraid to got virused
The "demake" of Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix for the GBA is a bit similiar to RE2 featuring the still backgrounds
cool i'll have a look at that! I know some of the GB / GBA harry potter games are quite good!
@@RetroBreak HP3 was my favourite, it followed the Gameboy Color line of jrpg games.
HP5 is nice in terms of the used engine, but sadly the game feels empty
This 2d turok looks best turok !
is there a place to buy celeste demake ?
Dr Mario for gba, after you beat the game, allows you to play it sideways. You never did look like a puzzle gamer to me.
I had no idea about this! I know the DS has a version you can play sideways. I don’t know how I don’t “look like” a puzzle gamer? I love puzzle games! One of my favourite genres in fact and I’ve made several videos about them!
why doesnt the celeste gba port have sound?
How can you play that virtua fighter?
If i knew how, I'd make a short demo of the FFVII reactor opening on GBA just to show it was possible, music, backgrounds and everything although the battle segments would likely need abit of a downgrade
That would be really cool!
@@RetroBreak maybe it's not entirely possible, can't actually say i know for sure. Btw cool you have a Vectrex, have you done a video on it yet?
Yep I’ve done a few videos on it :) here’s the latest one:
My Vectrex Collection and Gameplay! ruclips.net/video/HASMyejj8gk/видео.html
where to find these games??
ah yes "Pocket Meat"
😂
Why it seems like a green screen when you play flappy bird on the gba?
You forgot driver 3
erhh dude, there were games made with blurose, hell they even kept updating it, check out the youtuber "minimme" hes done some good work on 3d gba games and talks about the blurose engine.
note due to the gba having no dedicated video hardware - all 3d is done purely through software
Just checked out that channel, I'll watch his History of GBA 3D video later. I tried looking up which games were made using the Blueroses engine but couldn't find any..
Thanks for telling me about that channel, the two games that used it were Wing Commander Prophecy and Ozzy & Drix. I'd never heard or seen either of them before, maybe they didn't get a release in the UK? Also found out they used it in the Smashing Drive GBA port!
Please make a sequel I’m looking for some new home brew also a gba super smash bros home brew
I’m planning to make one :)
Yesss thank you :)
BR🇧🇷 VÍDEO QUE EU PROCURAVA KKKKKKKKKKKKKK VLW❤️
I hope someone makes Star Fox De-make
Can he make Super Street Fighter 2 turbo for Sega genesis
These are Demasters, not Demakes!
Same thing right?
@@RetroBreak Eeeeeeh, nope
Explain?
@@RetroBreak I'ts like saying Remasters are the same as Remakes.
Check out Bio Evil, that's a RE 1 Demake.
@@josecorrea6133 yes it makes sense in the context of remakes and remasters, but how do you define the difference between a demake and a demaster?
No Xbox series x or ps5???!
Next Gen GBA games only! 😂
@@RetroBreak lol I do enjoy my gameboy games but through the GameCube. Don’t do small screens.
Wouldn't any amateur developers pick up where GBA developers left off if there was salary ??
Cause i know I'm not only speaking for myself when i say *THERE IS STILL A MARKET FOR GAMEBOY ADVANCE* and thousands
of us would pay for games like the ones from Raylight Studios to see the day.
C'mon NINTENDO ! HEAR US.. GAMEBOY ADVANCE ISN'T DEAD !!!!
Seems like some might be starting to see the money in older consoles. The cancelled GBC game Infinity is getting finished and released properly this year! So maybe some GBA projects will also get picked back up by the original devs!
@@RetroBreak That would be great. Let's hope they realize there is a lot of people interested and still money to be made.
You keep saying Flappy BirdS, hahaha. I had an old man as a colleague and he called the microsoft software 'Words', instead of Word. Funny and annoying at the same time.
Haha sorry! I did realise when I was editing it back, but it was too late then! >.< technically there are multiple birds in the game so it’s not completely wrong ;)
@@RetroBreak Hahahaha, nice comeback!
True and usually when a bird is angry. It's not just that one bird you have to deal with.
If you like CHIPS CHALLENGE try out CODENAME HACKER for GBA, I just put it on a cart', 149 levels, it saves where your at and it lets you put your name in for best times and saves them for each level to.
