55:16 - For some context, this movie came out less than 7 months after the World Trade Center was destroyed on September 11, 2001. The lines "You mess with Spidey, you mess with New York!" followed by "You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!" got probably the biggest, wildest cheer I've ever heard in a movie theater before or since (huge Infinity War and Endgame moments included).

Aunt May is this age in the comics. The Aunt May you know from the MCU, hot Aunt May, was a very controversial casting choice at the time. So they didn’t ‘Do Aunt May wrong’ in this film - and the actress is awesome. Why is being old a bad thing 😂

      Wrong!
Raimi fans keep spamming this fake shit. Lmao
Raimi trilogy was widely inaccurate to the comics. She is his Aunt, not his Grandma.
Aunt May in the comics looks like a woman in her mid 40s not a 70 year old grandma.
Besides the Mcu Aunt May is roughly 53 years old.
The actress Marisa Tomei is about to be 54 this year.
Far more accurate to someone s aunt, especially a teen.

Fun fact, him catching the food on the cafeteria tray was entirely practical, not CGI. They shot it 156 times and were about to give up when Maguire caught all of them, nailing it. Also, this movie was the closest of all the live-action iterations of Spider-Man to his actual origin story in the comics. He learns responsibility under the heavy burden of guilt after Uncle Ben's death.

“With great power comes great responsibility”. Those words mean so much considering what Peter goes through. He could’ve stopped that mugger, but he didn’t. Then he paid the price. That’s why he became a hero. He realised he could do good things with these abilities so he should do those things.
It’s why Spider-Man is my favourite superhero, because he does screw up, he does make mistakes and he has to learn from them

    • @SuperDuperNick

Another good reason why he’s my favorite (and probably yours too) is that Iron Man and Batman are these genius rich men that can invent gadgets to fight crime and save the world, Superman, Thor and Captain America are all these super strong men that have these unrealistic abilities because they were destined for them but Peter Parker is just a KID, who we can look up to and relate to, despite having these powers, he’s still a teenager with worries

@@SuperDuperNick I disagree with your statements on Superman and Captain America. They weren't "Destined" for those abilities; Supes is a good person because he was raised by two good, kind, and loving parents. Cap is a good person for the same reason. In fact, I think Peter has more in common with them than you'd think--he's a good person who was raised by good people and wants to help. True, he didn't start OUT his hero career being perfectly good, but he's still a kid--of COURSE he's going to make mistakes. Batman and Iron Man represent people trying to be good in spite of flaws that hold them back, but they're too resigned to those flaws to make meaningful efforts to overcome them completely. Superman and Cap represent the ideal level of goodness that we all CAN achieve, if we aspire to work to overcome our flaws and be better. Spidey is a kid who has the potential to be the second archetype. He's not there just yet, but he's learning, and whenever he makes a mistake he does what he can to make it right and be better than he was the day before.
TL;DR, Batman and Iron Man represent who we are--flawed and in a constant struggle against our inner darkness.
Spidey is us working to climb out of that darkness, reaching towards the light.
Cap and Superman represent what we can one day become, as long as we work as hard as Spidey and don't give up.

It really does pack much more of a punch than in the tom holland spiderman for the same reasons. This spider man has to deal with the consequences of his actions. He makes mistakes and they do impact him and he has to figure a way around it. In my opinion tom hollands spiderman while being younger was very much cottled by the other superheros like dr. Strange and ironman. It wasnt really until they brought all the spidey movie universes together for no way home that he ever had a major struggle himself alone. In a way tom holland spiderman is a failure of a spiderman. He didnt learn on his, own he didnt lose anyone (unless you count ironman who the whole world lost not just spiderman) until no way home and in a way he still wasnt alone because he had the other universes spidermen to help. He was younger so it might have been expected he wouldnt listen too well, but that just makes the quality of the quote even lower since he wouldnt be mature enough to follow it or understand its value. Here uncle ben even stated he knew peter was at the age where things start to change and his decisons will determine what kind of man he will become. That part isnt included with the quote as much anymore and I think it loses value by not having it. Also in this spiderman not only did uncle ben die and that leave a really bad feeling due to his harmful last words earlier but he could have stopped the killer. As the reactors stated in this video toward the end this spider man does not pull his punches and todays mcu holds back a lot. People are getting too touchy feely on matters today and it is ruining a lot of cinema. This movie had touching moments but didnt require any kind of substantial downgrade in the violence or bloodshed. Also it didnt over use the cgi like a lot of fictional movies do today. Yes it had it but not to the same degree. They can do it well and no way home proves it. They just choose not to majority of the times now and wonder why there is so much backlash.

One thing I love about Sam Raimi's version is that it is not dependent on blockbuster actions to tell a story. This, especially Spider-Man and even the universally disliked Spider-Man 3 has great character moments where quieter moments and conversations shows character growth. There are mistakes that Peter makes and there consequences for that. Thats the learning process of growing up. Also liked that they made Aunt May a wise guide in the life of Peter. Someone he can count on for wisdom and advice to do the right thing and not stray from that path.
And also I like Mary Jane's character in these movies, apart from the loud screaming. Is it a very strong character? Yes and No . But is it realistic? Yes. She is a girl in high school, she has dreams and aspirations. And also she has an abusive father and still she wants to pursue her dreams of acting. But it was not an easy road and she had to do odd jobs to have income. And also she wants to be loved. Because all she has ever gotten in life is abuse and hatred from her house and her boyfriends just wanting her for her looks. Thats why when she says to Peter at the end that she wants to be with him because he makes her feel, "Like I am more than I ever thought I could be, that I AM JUST ME." Its only with Peter that she could express herself and not pretend to be someone else and be accepted.

in the comics peter actually makes his own web shooters and we fluid. sam raimi took creative liberty in this triology and made the spider webs biological for this peter parker. the reason we never saw mcu's spiderman get his pwers, learning to control them and design his suit is because the tobey and andrew spidey movies already gave us that backstory plus i think by now everyone knew how spiderman's story goes. in my opinion the mcu spiderman story was very well done (you'll see in spiderman no way home considering the point he reaches by the end of the movie). also the iconic line of "with great power comes great responsibility" is from the comics and its actually just a narration bubble from the writer (not a dialogue) and it goes:
"And a lean, silent figure slowly fades into the gathering darkness, aware at last that in this world, *with great power there must also come -- great responsibility!*
And so a legend is born and a new name is added to the roster of those who make the world of fantasy the most exciting realm of all!"
p.s. im curious to know which of the three spidermans/peter parkers you prefer... please give us a ranking of all the spidey movies and the character himself (potrayed in 3 different ways) after you're done with 'No Way Home' !! loved your reaction

@@mytotim8978 you dont like the mcu spiderman? sure not every movie would be everyone's cup of tea but you cant deny this version is the most lovable spiderman/peter. i personally love that they went the reverse route with his character arc with starting him off as an avenger without showing the origin story or uncle ben and all that stuff (tho we're still probably gonna get that in the animated series - freshmen year) and then he grows from a nerdy teenage boy into a responsible adult and THATS when we meet up with him at the end of no way home where spiderman movies usually find themselves to be starting off from.... its a fresh take to have him get his powers, getting with mj and losing aunt may spanned over 3 movies while in previous installments youd have the first third of the movie quickly giving you that overview. also i wouldn't classify any of his solo movies as bad. sure some are better than the other but they're all still decently made. [most just shit on mcu spidey and his movies because of being blind sided by the nostalgia of tobey movies cause lets be honest no one really loves andrews movies either (i personally dnt like tobey's spidey and do love andrew's)]. as far as "getting his character right" is concerned i think every movie he's in got his character progressively right. you cant compare the way his character is written to the other spidermans portrayal and term one right and the other wrong. its different itterations. this one fits in the mcu. heck you cant even call any inconsistencies in mcu sm/peter from one film to the other. he's a character who is met with different challenges and grows and transforms through them. sure theres nothing too deep abt it but at the end of the day he's still just a teenage boy/young adult. he's bound to change.

@@lilbrownbear Most lovable live Spiderman, Garfield, best narrative version, and also most acurate version, Tobey. Holland version waste 5 movies to get where other films only take half an hour, and is not because is something slowly build, writting with care. They start with a rookie Spiderman in Civil War, he has experience some sort of trauma, which push him to be a hero. He said him himself, he realise that when he has the power to change things but he doesn´t, and then bad things happen, it happen because of him. Almost great power comes great responsability. Then Homecoming erase all that small characterization and instead they give us a suit, and i love Karen, the ai, she was the best character in MCU Spiderman by far, but narrative speaking, Homecoming was shallow. Then we have Infinity War and Endgame, when Spiderman was force to fight in a interstellar war, for the future of all living things. He was force to kill, even in mele combat, stabbing his spider legs through the chest of enemies, throwing a general enemy to the void of space, to chock him and kill him in one of the worst ways imaginable. And then he came back to highschool and act like nothing happen, like he was a normal teenager, a boyscout, a goody two shoes. Far from home do nothing to the character, he did not progress, he even regress to been a spoiled and naive brat. Then we have No Way Home, the only one which did something with all the characters, by bringing on the consecuences of being so naive, spoiled and stupid. For the first time, Holland Spiderman suffer, move on from the shallow shell they make his character and even tried to kill someone, for vengeance. To finish where all other version and rendition of Peter Parker start, after 6 movies. What a bad trip, a too long one, No Way Home should be the first one, not the last one.

There's also Sony's need to protect their option to produce their own Spider-Man films. People complaining about the changes the MCU made to Spider-Man seem to have conveniently forgotten Sony still owns the Spider-Man film rights. Marvel Studios had to make changes to differentiate MCU Spidey from Sony Spidey; that's the reason for no direct references to Uncle Ben, the "Peter Tingle" instead of Spider Sense, no jock Flash Thompson, etc. Some of this stuff was apparently mentioned in those leaked Sony e-mails.
Sony has to protect their interests and we, unfortunately, get a lot less of the traditional Spider-Man lore and characters in the MCU; it is what it is.

I'll never forget going to watch this a few months after 9/11 happened. I lived and worked close to Fort Benning, GA, at the time, and we had a constant influx of young men and women signing up to go to war and fight The Enemy in the Middle East. Like someone else in the comments said, as Americans, we *felt* this movie at the end, and I'll never forget the image of Spiderman swinging in front of the huge American flag at the very end. It was breathtaking, and it still got to me here in the recap.
To Monica's point... the world then was on the verge of becoming. We still had black & white 2G phones without cameras. Only weird people sent those new-fangled text messages. A GPS was a device you bought in an electronics store of taped to your dashboard to get places so you didn't have to print things out from MapQuest before a trip, otherwise you'd have to buy an atlas or roadmap and plot out your course. The world was so different then, and young people becoming adults today can't imagine what it was like then.
This movie was when Marvel was still trying to find it's way. Blade had already been a success a years earlier, and I think The Punisher came out somewhere close to this (maybe the next spring?), but there was no MCU. There was no Dark Knight from DC, no big names from comics... and then there was Tobey Maguire and Spiderman. As much as I love and adore what Tom Holland has done with the character, Tobey Maguire will always be my Spiderman and Kirsten Dunst will always be my MJ. This movie happened at the perfect time.

If you guys can, when you get to Spider-Man 3, you should watch the Editor's Cut. Probably only a few minutes longer, but it recuts some stuff and makes it work a lot better in my opinion. It gives some extra good moments for a villain and cuts out a long boring scene in the middle. This is also the only Spider-Man to have organic webbing as no other iteration of Spider-Man except for maybe Spider Ham has organic webbing. Every other spider man has to make synthetic webbing because they don't produce it naturally and Parker is supposed to be a genius who can figure out how to make his own.

When you think of the chronology of cinema releases that way, you’ll realise after watching them all why certain things weren’t “slowly explained” when Tom Holland as Peter appeared with the Avengers etc. It has all been slowly explained multiple times before. Hopefully this changes your perspective on what you considered to be failures in the storytelling process for MCU Holland Spidey’s arc.

Like overexagerated, the other spider-man franchises did the love story better. Same as with the female characters.
