- Summer is here and it's time to change the oil in our old 1995 Rinker boat. There are millions of Mercruiser 3.0 engines out on the water right now so I decided to show how I change the oil using the Topsider MVP extractor. Drain plug be darned!

I already have a really nice oil pump that I use on my skis, but I was headed to Lowe's to buy a contractor garbage bag after watching other videos. Thank you so much for this video. I'm about to change my oil 'the easy way' right now! Blessings to you sir.
Glad I could help! A garbage bag just seems like a giant mess waiting to happen. Not to mention, there will still be a lot of residual oil in the bag when it's thrown into the dumpster. Doesn't seem like an environmentally sound way to do it.

If you're on a budget, the 5.00 fluid hand pump at harbor freight will work too. Just get an adapter to get the hose shrunk down to the right size for your dipstick tube. The brake bleeding pump (also at HF) comes with a bunch of different plastic threaded adapters that work to adapt your hose diameter down. I use this sort of pump to suck out transmission fluid or oil if I've added too much. Great for changing oil in lawnmowers without having to flip the mower sideways to get to the plug.

1 no brainer.... if there's a drainage hole in the bottom of the boat. But you don't want to make a mess with the oil. Why not put your drainage hose through that hole to the bottom of the engine. Then attach that hose to a collection container. (could make your own ice cream or soft drink container with hole drilled in it and hose slotted in bottom. Then some tape or blue tac so that it dosnt drip).
Another option if you don't own a vacuum pump is to buy a quick drain plug from Fumoto. They come in all different threads and sizes. The N series have a nipple on the drain, which you can connect to some flexible acrylic tubing and drain into a container. People use them not only on cars and trucks, but hard to access drain plugs on generators, etc. There's another brand Pfister? that copied Fumotos design but they are inferior and you'll only save about 5 bucks by buying the knockoff brand. I would recommend measuring your threads on your drain plug the next time you do an oil change and then order a replacement from fumoto so that way you're sure to find the correct sized threaded plug to order. Not a paid ad for them, but I put them on all my vehicles because it makes changing fluids a breeze.
My 3.0 has a long rubber hose that comes out of the oil pan. That long hose can be fished out the water drain port in the back of the boat and the oil drained outside into a catch container. Surprised yours doesn’t.

Hey, so I put the the oil through the dip stick hole I have a rear main oil leak so I just put some Lucas stop leak in it. Do you think that will hurt the engine that I put it in the wrong one?
I honestly don't know. I'm not a mechanic unfortunately. I just do this stuff on the side.
I have the rear mostly off on my boat I just bought a couple weeks ago for access to the livewell pump. While I have it off I would like to change the oil. Do you have a link to the oil filter and oil or able to tell me exactly what I need to get? Also, what is the plastic reservoir for that says quicksilver on it to the right of the oil port? Mine is low on that.

Also, that extra reservoir is for the drive oil in your lower unit.

I didn’t see water coming out of the motor, was it circular or am I missing something?
It comes out of the motor basically where the out drive meets the boat. There's a port where it exhausts out.
Hey I have a little water on my spark plugs ...due to my faulty ass...so I need to get that out cus now it's turning and turning but not starting...I've replaced everything and every part known on my 140 mercruiser...and all my little "mechanic "friends are baffled...I paid them by the way...smh...the only thing I haven't replaced is the distributor stem part...I replaced the distributor cap tho...... so yea...any ideas please
Sorry I'm replying so late. Did you get your boat running? Have a friend crank the boat and then look down into the carb. Do you see gas dripping from the jets? Have him stop cranking and just watch the jets. Do you see drops of gas dripping into the motor? I had this issue because the fuel pump was putting out too much pressure. To fix it, I made a 1/4 inch gasket for the fuel pump. It dropped the pressure and now the engine runs great. Just a thought

Mine can do about 60km/h at full throttle.
Depends on what boat it’s in and what prop you have on it. My is 8 meter pontoon will do about 35kph and I have a 13 degree prob for extra low end. If I step up to a 17 degree I can get 47kph but it’s low on take off power!

my house is not connected to the city water supply so we use water well and is saltwater it does not matter if I use salt water to test it?
You'll want to consult a boat mechanic for that question. I'm not sure what saltwater can or will do to the engine.
@@dontburnthehousedownvideos salt water is fine but youll want to flush it out with fresh afterwards as we all know what salt does.. these boats can be ran in the ocean also of course. just have to flush with fresh water sooner then later.
On my 1986 Bayliner with a Mercruiser 3.0XL that I got for free, draining the oil is accomplished, according to the manual, by pulling the bilge drain plug out. Attached to the bilge drain plug is supposed to be a tube attached to the oil pan drain plug, with a plug on the end. So you pull out the bilge drain plug, pull the oil drain tube out through the bilge drain hole, unstopped the tube and drain your oil out! Then you fish the tube back into the bilge drain, put in your bilge drain plug, and Bob’s Your Uncle! Whatever that means…
So, has anyone ever done this this way, or is this some engineer’s fantasy?
That sounds like it would be amazing! But I don't have the manual and none of those parts are present on my boat. But it wouldn't be hard to rig something like that up with some tubing and a funnel!
@@dontburnthehousedownvideos I have a 97 Sea Ray with a 3.0 and I find have that drain setup either but if I remember right I think ebay or maybe Amazon has the petcock replacement valve for the drain plug and some come with the drain tube to drain it out of the drain plug hole too and its only somewhere between $20-$30 if that helps you any.
I'm getting ready to change my oil and get that kit for mine. I just did a head job on mine it blew the two middle cylinders to the outside so thankfully no water in the oil but I ran a lot of oil out of mine adjusting the valves so I figure now is just as good of time as any so when spring gets here it'll be ready to go again.
I have a 3.0lx aswell, the filler cap says it requires 10w30, but a local boat shop said 25w40 quicksilver mineral will do just fine... is that correct in your opinion?
I think that would be just fine.
10w30 is what it called for at 4 and a half have a nice day

Not really. However, I wouldn't do it simply because I wouldn't want to risk spilling any oil in the water.

What’s in the clear container
The one attached to the motor? It's a reservoir for gear lube for the lower unit.
How about semi synt. 10W40?
To my knowledge, 10w40 isn't recommended. But call a boat shop and kick that question by them. They'd have a better answer for you.
I've used synthetic 25w-40 on our Mercruiser 3.0L, which should be the recommended specification to my knowledge. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Older Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha drives were definitely a hassle for oil changes. Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha drives manufactured around or after the early 2000s or so have rubber oil drain hoses that run along the bilge then out the boat plug for easy oil drain into a container or oil change pan. If you can find it, go for the Quicksilver 25w-40 Synthetic blend on Mercruiser stern drives...every season I put nearly 100 hours on my boat and when I change the oil by end of season, it still looks to be in great condition.

The impeller is made of plastic. It will literally burn up within 10 seconds. The motor will overheat within a few minutes. Don't be a troll unless you are educated.
