    The NSMB series isn't fundamentally bad, the level design is cool and the games are all very fun at the end of the day. The mainly get a bad rep because of their lack of distinction between each other. Some level design and themes do feel too identical, but there still plenty of new ideas with each entry. To me these new ideas are enough to make a new entry not feel redundant, but that isn't the case with everyone. I wish we still got more new 2D Mario games. I would hope that we would get more games in the future, maybe with cool new mechanics, ideas, and themes to make the games more fresh, fixing the criticism many others have for the game.

    • @semario2606
      @semario2606 Год назад +63

      @@staringcorgi6475 That is definitely an issue. NSMB2 suffers the most from reused themes, tile sets and music. NSMBU is a little better with some new music, tile sets, and themes like Haunted Forest, Lava Peach's Castle, or even Snow at Night. But at the end of the day it's the same as NSMB and Wii, the changes are very small and shallow. I suppose Nintendo wanted to play it safe, but it didn't really help at the end of the day. They don't have to go all out with new worlds like Odyssey, just a little more effort can go a long way.

      @@semario2606 I had some fun with NSMB2, awesome times with Wii, but when I got u deluxe on the switch, idk man, it felt like a cash grab. My brother and I couldn’t get around to finishing it. We are still on world 3 to this day. Felt like it had no passion, no originality, and wasn’t very fun. To this day I miss my Wii because I had NsMB Wii and it was awesome

    • @semario2606
      @semario2606 Год назад +17

      @@fasttheplayer2535 Nintendo was leaning very hard into the casual player base during the Wii U era. Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and NSMBW all got sequels on the Wii U that were very similar to the original. I imagine Nintendo didn't make many changes and played it safe because that's what they thought people wanted. "People like Mario Wii, let's do that again." This obviously backfired, because in consumer's eyes, why get a new game when you can just play the Wii game instead. To me the game is appealing because of its similarities to Wii, but I am sure I am in the minority. If they made it like Tropical Freeze where it has similar mechanics but expanded the level design and themes it would probably feel more unique.

    In hindsight, it certainly could've been better, but at the same time, there is a lot to praise. NSMB was a strong start, implementing many of the fundamental mechanics we'd expect from modern 2D Mario, however, the game can be difficult for some to return to, and in many aspects, such as level design, was surpassed by NSMBWii. NSMBWii is a modern classic. A game that set standards. A game that checked off boxes you didn't even know you needed, but now cannot play Mario without. It is top-notch in nearly every regard, and still remains the best-executed 2D Mario game in the series. NSMBU stands on equal footing when it comes to level design, but drops the ball with everything else, from bosses to music to world maps to enemy rings to power-ups to the finale. NSMBU at times feels creative and well-inspired, and at other times feels like a shameless, whole hog rip-off. It desperately needed more development time to seal in the cracks, as well as introduce at least one new gameplay mechanic, which it sorely lacks. NSMB2 no doubt stole much of that development time, and accomplished jack squat with it. It is a forgettable, reprehensible game that rode off the tails of everything else. Nuff said. So, in short, the NSMB games started strong and peaked early. They rode the wave of success and innovation until later titles failed to uphold those standards. That laziness ensured the NSMB games would never be revered in the same way as the classics. Honestly, had the series managed to improve past NSMBWii, upping the anty in several regards and consistently subverting the audience's expectations, it could've been incredible. It could've been the best. As of now though, it's pretty good all things considered.

And since we used to play with no tutorials I had to find every small detail by myself. And at some point during bowser’s castle I was really confused on how to pass the level. I was surprised when my mom helped me and turned out to be great at the game, really connected me a lot more to my mom. After I was I able to buy my first console by myself (Nintendo switch) Im just looking forward to play these games with my parents. Mario has done so much for us Its just crazy ;p

      super mario bros 3 was extremely different from the original and super mario world, what are you on about lol. The original didnt even have an overworld and smb3 had an actual inventory for powerups, meanwhile super mario world was one big world with way more secrets instead of separate worlds, but it removed the inventory for powerups. Not to mention all 3 games had extremely different art styles, meanwhile all new super mario bros games look nearly identical, with the same overworld.
      This really sounds like the opinion of someone who never played through all those games.

I didn’t become a diehard Mario fan, but I bout cried when I heard that title screen music again. I remember being so terrified of giant Bowser that I had to go to my room while my brother beat him. Thank you! I’m tired of people acting like the people that make negative/mixed-at-best reviews are immature as if they should be more positive towards this series. I can definitely respect positive (and I don’t just mean as games on their own, but as a series in general) opinions on this series just as long as they respect the opinions of those that find that the series is lacking (even if they find these games to be far from the worst games, even by Mario standards. Honestly, I think that’s why people defend NSMB. Because they don’t want to hear bad things about Mario/Nintendo. But to highlight the times they made retro (and sometimes modern) fun and the times they played it too safe would be more nuanced than acting like Modern Mario is misunderstood when that was exactly when the Mario franchise went from hell yeah to the 1990s-2000s to a hit-or-miss) I would take (most of) the other Super Mario games (mainly Mario 3, Super Mario All-Stars, the Super Mario World series and Super Mario Galaxy) any day.

    Who here after SMBW trailer

  • @kryzethx
    @kryzethx Год назад +15

    3:58 Secret exits were handled MUCH better in SMW, since they were telegraphed on the world map (red dots and most ghost houses have secret exits) and were generally obvious when playing through the level (key or keyhole just sitting around). These ALSO let you skip huge portions of the game, even more than any other 2D Mario game, since you can basically get to the final boss from the beginning of World 2, after going through the Star World, and I would say that method is also a lot of fun to speedrun.
    All of the secret exits from NSMB and onwards are so obtuse and impossible to find; they make no sense. It's also boring that they almost always just lead to a world pipe, or just skip a portion of the same world. The secret exits in SMW were more like branching paths.. although now that I think about it, I guess that's not too different. But it FEELS different, when the world map is not separated into distinct loading zones; it feels more like an actual cohesive world.

    • @BrendonCap
      @BrendonCap Год назад +2

      Disagree. NSMB secret exits are a thrill to find. Many times youre left spending almost all the time to find it, and when you do, its so satisfying. They arent supposed to be obvious exits

    • @kryzethx
      @kryzethx Год назад

      @@BrendonCap I 100% disagree with that; a player could go through the entire game without finding a single secret exit in NSMB and onwards, leaving them with an entire chunk of the game unplayed.
      That means for anybody who wants to actually experience the entire game, they'd either have to waste all their time looking through literally every stage of the game, because there's nothing obvious about any of them, or just look it up. Which is lame.
      SMW clearly shows you in what levels the secret exits are, leaving it up to the player to find out exactly where. Some of them aren't that easy to find, like using the cape feather to fly under the regular exit, or flying up to the roof of a ghost house.
      But the major difference is that they leave the player with enough knowledge on how to locate most of them, without requiring any outside knowledge.

    @tinfoilslacks3750 Год назад +6

    I think that NSMB is a great way to illustrate that "form is a function all its own". The first was fantastic on all fronts. The second added the gimmick of multiplayer but the single player experience was fundamentally the same, and the biggest thing that drew the most interest pre release was the return of the koopalings. More than a decade later, the other two have added two power ups, both specific to their games and retreads of existing power ups, and are otherwise the same. You could hypothetically transpose s NSMBU level into NSMBDS, and aside from graphic/processing limitations things would be exactly the same.
    We put gameplay on a pedestal because it's the unique element only this medium has, but the other elements are relevant. It doesn't matter than NSMB as a series has tight fun gameplay, the games need distinct identities that make them engaging.

    This is suspiciously similar to Silok Hawks video on this idea of, a retrospective of the entire New super Mario series. I don’t just mean the idea, but yeah it is the same idea. I am talking about how similar all the reviews of each game are.
    The main differences that set the reviews apart are literally just this guy adding subjective points that are extremely dumb once you look into them for more than a second. The main one being him saying that NSMB for the DS was an underrated game, even though it was one of the best selling games on the DS, which the DS was also a really well selling console.
    I am not saying this guy 100% ripped off Silok Hawks video, I am just saying that it is suspicious how all of the reviews in a 1 hour and 20 minute video are all structed very similarly to his video.

    I'm tired of people talking bad on NSMB. These games definitely still hold up by today's standards. In addition to that, NSMB DS gets flack for being 'unoriginal' by today's standards when in actuality it literally brought back 2-D Mario to the modern era. Mario Bros Wii made multiplayer (wonky) fun and inventive and NSMB U had Luigi U which was one of the best level packs we've seen since NSMB 2 (Which I can admit feels like the most contrived game).
    NSMB is a great series and I think everyone needs to boot up an old copy and remind themselves why they love Mario in the first place

    I think the next game can have a 3D world like artstyle and have a twist on existing level theme. 9 tweaked worlds and 9 remixed world which have their original theme. A red desert and ice-covered snow world is a good example. The power up can be poison flower where you have to wait a while before defeating enemies and a cheese that turns mario into mouse mario which let mario walk on ceilings. They should have original bosses instead of boom boom in the tower levels like mega hammer Bros or king bob-omb. The castle having Koopalings is fine but they can have interesting attacking method once in a while. The world map can be more inspired by Mario world in certain worlds while keeping the format for the others. Would be nice to see more obscure and new emeries like shy guys and goloomba. There can be more moves to reward advanced players like roll and long jump. The score system should be hidden and the game should limit Mario to 25 lives. Coins also should reward you with power-ups when it reaches 100. I think that’s enough for a new 2D Mario.

I kinda think of the first one for the ds as a Super Mario Land situation: a basic game that introduced us to Mario but unlike the Land series, we never got a Mario Land 2: Golden Coins after, instead we got more of Mario Land 1 (if that makes sense).
