Galaxy 2 is not a bad game, not in the slightest! But there is just a magical feeling thats missing in this game that the first game did have though. Galaxy 2 is just more optimized for gameplay, meaning you get to blitz trough the levels. And while the designs get more creative, the first game was more about exploring.
Galaxy 2 is basically the first game but if you were to trade the atmosphere and story for even better gameplay thanks to the World Map allowing you to get into levels faster, better level design and power ups. While I can absolutely see why others wouldn't like this change, I for one am all for it. I still think Galaxy 1 is a masterpiece, but I definitely prefer its sequel.
Imo SMG1 had slightly better level design. Less linearity and more sandbox overall. But I could see why you’d prefer SMG2’s level design, which had many more gimmicks, power-ups, gravity antics.
i always found it annoying going from dome to dome when you can just "fast travel". also, as a minor thing not needing to confirm save after every star is also a bit more convenient
@@user-vi4xy1jw7e he doesnt know, he just watched that one video by the guy who said its no masterpiece and has sheeped every other sheep who watched the same video
As much as we would all love that, it’s highly unlikely as 1) it’s been 14 years and 2) the second game was only made because of some elements such as Yoshi that didn’t make it into the first game.
I played through Galaxy 2 for the first time in 10-12 years about a month ago, and I absolutely loved it. Before that I always preferred Galaxy 1, forgetting almost everything about Galaxy 2 from the bosses to the galaxies. Galaxy 2 has become my favorite Mario and and favorite game ever
I think galaxy 2 still has a lot of atmospheric galaxies, like Slimy Spring or Cosmic Cove. Yeah, its not as much as the first game, but I think it's pretty cool how Galaxy 2 sort of blended the atmosphere from galaxy with the classic and happy mario atmosphere.
Man its hard. I genuinely think if both games were to combine it would've been the perfect Mario game ever. I truly think the power ups and gameplay in Galaxy 2 are just iconic and so fun, and if they just had that fun with the emotion Galaxy 1 brings, then thats truly your perfect game. I never even knew 2 was a retelling, but now that I know this it just hurts! The Evil Luma using Mario and going for revenge, somehow bringing the comet observatory right next to Marios head and being able to visit it from a launch star (or maybe even designing it into a level while its under attack couldve been a cool stage for this betrayal and boss fight.) Ditching the big purple loaf to have Rosalina be the new tour guide, and maybe even continue her story from the first game or having a new element for closure. I want to love Galaxy 2, but what they dont do really hits too hard for it to be considered a good sequel imo. Revisiting Galaxy 1 recently after 10 some years left me disappointed to find out that some of my favorite Galaxy memories (gameplay wise only) were from 2!
Exactly! Bring in the most iconic gameplay elements of both games and add a couple more..give every single Galaxy a sense of life and a real place rather than obstacles in the sky. I loved Galaxy 1 because almost every level either felt like someone's home planet, or you were on desolate trash. Aesthetic continuity was the driving factor of that first game forsure, and just having that in 2 would've easily made it top the 1st one. But Miyomoto just doesn't think like that apparently. However, perhaps we wouldn't have had such fun gameplay if they derived resources to make a story. Seems as if we will never know
@@maximmillions the atmosphere of galaxy 1 and the gameplay of galaxy 2 would make for one hell of a love letter to all of us, it's been more than a decade since the last galaxy game
I was opposed to Galaxy 2 for the longest time because of the story downgrades. Then I actually played it and ya know what, I think I was turned around on it
@@liveslugreaction6509 Wait, people actually gave a fuck about the story of Galaxy 1&2? Every Mario game literally has the same plot, the entire point of the series is to just have fun with the gameplay.
Wow, I watched your Super Mario Galaxy video just yesterday. Great timing! In my opinion, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the better game mechanically. However, Super Mario Galaxy is great for an amalgamation of things. The atmosphere, soundtrack and story were just as important as the gameplay to make Super Mario Galaxy what it is and, aside from the OST, the sequel lacks in these departments. I don't even feel in space while playing Super Mario Galaxy 2. In any case, it's still a very good game.
I highly disagree though; I think music im Galaxy 2 is better and I love its atmosphere more than 1 for how happy and classicy it feels. I agree quite a bit that the story is... story. But in all honesty, Galaxy 2 does have the best level design across the mainline mario games. Especially with how well executed the end game is with its green stars. Inshort, I think 2 is the best game in the series (my fav game of all time) with how gameplay go so far where it kinda lacks with story and such. Note: while I think music is better, it is very subjective. Same thing with atmosphere.
@@CassiusTheSecond I can respect your opinion on the atmosphere, although I disagree and find the space theme of the first game to be miles better and more grandiose. But in no way I’m going to say that the level design here is the best in the series. It’s not beating Super Mario World or even Super Mario 3D World
I actually think the intro of Galaxy 2 is quite genius. You start off in 2D to reflect Mario's last adventure most likely being Super Mario Bros.Wii or just mainline Mario games usually being 2D. It's peaceful at first but then as you make your way to Peach's castle you see Bowser has taken control of it, almost as if you are discovering it for yourself once you make it there instead of the game telling you through a cutscene. It's a genuine surprise. In 2D Mario games you never run around Peach's castle, it's just kinda there, so once you make it to the castle the 3D element is introduced to let you know this is gonna be a 3D Mario adventure. I think calling the opening uninspired is missing a lot of the symbolism actually used in it. And while Galaxy 1's opening was beautiful and iconic I always felt it lacked a bit of color, something Galaxy 2 kinda fixes by using more popping colors. Galaxy 1 also makes it look like the mushroom kingdom is on a small planet, not really being faithful to how it looks in other games, but Galaxy 2 fixes that by making it actually look like the mushroom kingdom which makes it truly feel like you are stepping from the mainline mario games universe into a interstellar adventure, where in Galaxy 1 it kinda feels like it was always in a different universe than other mario games cause of how it looked. Galaxy 1's opening is definitely still better cause of how grand and beautiful it is, but Galaxy 2's opening does a lot more than you'd think at first and improves certain elements as well.
The green stars were such an awesome touch that put Galaxy 2 a bit higher in regard for me than its predecessor. But man, that final scene with the lumas in Galaxy 1 sacrificing themselves still leaves a mark on me 16 years later. What a beautiful addition
thanks for ruining super mario galaxy for me. i just started playing it. and only insane people expect ending spoilers as one of the top comments on a video game that doesn't even regard the one being discussed in the video.
Um, if you have not played through the whole thing, why are you watching a video that revolves on the sequel to begin with? second, spoilers are Everyware, so it's best not to look up any media on a game or even a sequel of that same media because it's bound to happen, common knowledge @@ianswift3521
As a kid, my older brother would always play as Mario which left me to be Player 2 in most of these games, so during that time I always preferred the gameplay to Galaxy 2 since it introduced the red luma, which I think made playing the game as a second player a lot more fun and engaging. Both of the games are so special to me and I think you did a wonderful job on your video!
4:25 I love how the screen says "let m tell you about a story that also begins with stardust" screen appears not only tell us that MG2 is a sequel to MG1 but it also implies what the first stage is called in the first game which I neve noticed
Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the first 3D Mario game I’ve ever played when I was a kid. Even to this day I still enjoy this masterpiece. The amazing creativity each of the galaxies have, the memorable boss fights and the ability to collect all the green power stars at the end just make this game so memorable and amazing. Though, I do agree with the lack of the cinematic cutscene we got in the beginning of the game unlike Galaxy 1, I still enjoy and love this game to this day, it’s truly a masterpiece that NEEDS a remastered treatment for the Nintendo Switch.
I've never seen Galaxy 2 as a sequel. I've always played both back to back whenever I've gone back to them so it's always felt to, me like it was more the second half of the game.
Same. They seem like two halves to me; whenever I play galaxy, I have to play galaxy 2 since the two games essentially complete each other if you know what I mean.
Honestly one of my favorite galaxies was Clockwork Ruins because of the background art in the level. The giant towers and the mysterious planet below always fascinated me. The same goes for the ending section of Slimey Spring Galaxy with the sunset and wide expanse. I also gotta include the last Bower level with the huge castle hallway in the background. This sort of goes for a majority of the rest
It really should have been to match the original All-Stars having four games and considering it's one of the four original collect-a-thon games. Then add Odyssey later to match the original coming out with a version that included Super Mario World. Call it Super Mario 3D All-Stars + Odyssey.
one of my favorite gameplay of this game happens to be Yoshi's infinite flutter glitch, and this glitch can break the difficulty of certain stars, and especially the green stars.
growing up with the Galaxy series i will say that you are right i think both games were grate in there own right i was to young to understand these caveats but you explaining them gave me a flood of wonderful memories and new appreciations for both games i wish they made a 3rd game combining aspects like the story and atmosphere and story from G1 and the gameplay improvements and post-game from G2 and make it have more open world exploration like other 3D Marios but I've been craving Super Mario Galaxy 3 for a really long time now
No but I don't understand why Galaxy 2 wasn't just DLC, like it could be a 19.99$ DLC which just added Yoshi and some exclusive galaxies including Lubba and Luma Master
I agree with a lot of what you said but a couple of places where we deviate: 1. Yes, Mario Galaxy 2 has less story and atmosphere but I don't find it disappointing. I think it's a great tradeoff. 1 has more emotion and complete story, 2 has more fun levels. The linear world map I'm ok with but I guess I like linear things more than most. I like seeing how close I am to the end of something as motivation to keep going. And it also seemed like they knew we had gone through the emotional wringer of the first one and made it clear they were not looking to do that again, just wanted us to enjoy the cool new levels, and I'm fine with that. Don't get me wrong, the emotion of the first game really moved me, but I didn't need it in the sequel, and I realize it's rare to put that in a Mario game, so I'm used to not judging Mario games based on that. 2. I am not a fan of the final Bowser fight. I think in a final boss fight there are 2 major components: presentation and actual challenge. Often games will use a masterful presentation to hide the fact that the boss is easy as fuck. And I think that's what happened here. Yes, it did look really cool, don't get me wrong. But it was painfully easy. I felt no sense of challenge at all trying to kill Bowser, just the illusion of challenge. And yes, the battle style was creative, but it couldn't make up for the lack of challenge to me. Bowser was also kind of easy in the final boss fight in SMG1 but I felt like you were usually still going to die a few times first, especially if you took victory for granted. In this one, I'm not sure I ever die when facing Bowser, it feels like a joke, and I feel like it undermines the grand presentation of the fight. I was kind of hoping you would have at least mentioned in passing how easy the fight was. But I think your main points I totally agree with. It's not a bad sequel and it's a tremendous game. It could have done more story/atmosphere wise. I'm not sure it needed to to make me happy but yeah, it could have made it more special had they put in the extra effort to craft a more complete story. And maybe that is worth talking about. Maybe this game could have been one to bring us to tears too.
I remember when I first played super Mario galaxy when I was nine years old with my first puppy. He would stare at the beach level in the kitchen section in Rosalina home. It was his favorite part. 12 years later I played it on my switch in front of my elder dog one more time at the beach level he loved and started to wag his tail. It was the most wholesome last time we had together.
I like Galaxy 2, but I vastly prefer the gameplay and atmosphere of the first game. I'm looking at the list of galaxies and I just don't think most of them compare to the ones in the first game. The ones that I love are: 1: Flip switch 2: Puzzle Plank, Cosmic Cove 3: Freezeflake, Haunty Halls 4: Sweet Mystery 5: Everything except Upside Dizzy 6: Melty Monster, Throwback, and Slimy Spring Special: Flip out and Grandmaster Tbh I don't remember any of the Bowser levels that well. In Galaxy 1 1: Good Egg, Honeyhive, Sweet Sweet, Robot Reactor 2: Space Junk, BattleRock, Star Reactor, Rolling Green, Hurry Scurry 3: Beach Bowl, Ghostly, Buoy Base, Bubble Breeze 4: All of them 5: All of them 6: All of them (except snowcap) The original had fewer galaxies but each of the main ones felt like they were given more depth in comparison. I just don't find many of 2's galaxies to be that memorable. I'd give Galaxy a 10/10 and Galaxy 2 a 6/10
I believe the only way we'll see another Mario Galaxy series in this generation if it's called "Super Mario Returns to Galaxy." That would be incredible.
It took me like 8 years of off and on playing the game before I beat the Perfect Run. When I first did it I had set up my Wii in the living room of the youth facility I lived in, so people could watch me if I wanted to. It felt really anticlimactic realizing it was finally over. I haven't played SMG2 since that day, but I'm thinking of starting a new playthrough soon
25:11 -- It took me over 120 attempts to complete that mission (and two separate days of playing)! My heart was beating a mile a minute near the end and my palms got sweaty. However, I'm proud of myself for not giving up! 💪 (Trust me, if you've beaten Luigi's Purple Coins and Lava Spire Daredevil Run from the first game, you've seen nothing yet.) 26:14 -- I'm one of those people! Also, excellent and thorough video, but *we need Mario Galaxy 3!*
You know… Galaxy 2 is a masterpiece just like Galaxy 1. But the reason I love Galaxy 1 more is because it has better and deep story (a beautiful story actually) and I also love the music more. Galaxy 2 is better gameplay wise but I wish it had a deeper story like the first one.
This game is one of the first games I've ever played besides lego star wars and mkwii. We also had the first Galaxy game, but like nsmw it barely worked so I only got to buoy base in that game, so I find this one way more nostalgic.
This is like the Far cry 3 and Far Cry 4 comparison, which 3 focuses on story wise, like Mario Galaxy and 4 focuses in more gameplay aspects and mechanics, like Mario Galaxy 2. Overall I love both games, and as long I get to have fun, it's all it matters!
Just stumbled across your channel the other day, been hooked since and really enjoying your stuff! A lot of people may make this kind of content but you have a unique style to your videos and commentary that really makes you stand out :D
i miss mario games having that whimsical and mysterious feeling galaxy had from the music to the stage design everything felt so different to any other mario game out and i feel that we need another game similar to it to differentiate it from other platformers/other mario games
This was like a professional, cinematographic documentary about one of the greatest games ever made. It's so great. Great gameplay too, you know how to play this thing.
Galaxy 2 is my favorite game of all time, but admittedly it's only a sequel in concept. I think they wanted to do a sequel but also needed to make it different, and so they traded in the atmosphere and story of the first game for far expanded upon everything else. The gameplay mechanics, level design, music and difficulty are all cranked up to 11 where all those things (except the music) were more so in the 8-9 range in Galaxy 1. I'd argue that there is still atmosphere, just a completely different one than what Galaxy 1 had. Where Galaxy 1's atmosphere was deep, quiet and peaceful in a way, Galaxy 2 has an energetic and exciting atmosphere that matches all the cool new stuff and ideas that are taking place and honestly this invokes a serious sense of joy and magic when playing the game. It really depends on what kind of person you are as to which you prefer but both are undeniably masterpiece 10/10 games and always will be.
Super Mario Galaxy was a true masterpiece, and the story is the most impactful of any video game I've played. Mario Galaxy 2 doesn't have that, but the gameplay is a HUGE step up. To sum it up, I adore the first game for its story, atmosphere, and nostalgia, but in terms of actually _playing_ the game I prefer the second. Its weird. The background music for the fully finished Starship Mario always gives me the feels. It just feels like home.
While I do think Galaxy 2 is better than the first, it’s a bad sequel as it doesn’t change enough to be considered a good sequel. It could have been Galaxy 1 DLC and it wouldn’t feel any different
This might be a slightly unconventional opinion, but i actually think that SMG2s story mirrors SMG1s quite brilliantly. Sure, there's a few hiccups during the opening, but keeping a lot of it as subtext served the story quite well. Lubba getting to see Rosalina again was genuinely touching, even if Lubba as a character might have been a little unexplored. Also, one detail I remember quite fondly was how, whenever you are on a space near a worldportal on the map, the portal itself actually showed up on the faceship skybox. It's the little things like that that made young me absolutely fall in love with, not just SMG, but its sequel as well. (P.S. No matter how much I dislike the boobbot, it's still a better boss then megaleg, fight me I dare you)
i never liked mario galaxy 2 like i loved the first game.. i could never really wrap my hand around WHY ! because i still loved all the levels, but something just felt off.. after i heard your critique of the sequel, it all made sense ! the atmosphere of the two games is so different.., the story is what makes the first game so emotional and even kind of.. rushing ? and i think that collecting stars also feels more rewarding in the first game
Since the last thing that matters to me personally in a Mario game is the story, I’m on the side of Galaxy 2 being the better game. I love them both very much, but the 2nd was just bigger, and more of what I wanted. And minor things like not preferring the map didn’t change that at all.
Peace be upon you guys and ABSOLUTELY NOT! Sure I missed Rosalina and the Observatory but we got fun levels, YOSHI ( woo :D), Luigi without having to collect all stars, and to this day the Starship Mario’s theme always follows me around in my head. God I love that theme. :] (P.S. would you rather have a Galaxy 3, Sunshine 2 or Odyssey 2? I want a Sunshine 2…)
I think galaxy 2 is meant to be a more simplified version of Mario Galaxy like in a traditional lore format while Mario Galaxy 1 has a deep lore narrative
3:46 I think that the intro of galaxy 2 is meant to be kinda bare bones and 2d. It makes the introduction to 3d gameplay in outer space stand out in contrast, and generally much more exiting.
I think I’d disagree with the idea that galaxy 2 has no atmosphere or is lacking in it. Rather instead it simply goes for something different. Galaxy 1 has a melancholic and dark (in the literal sense) atmosphere, it takes a more grounded idea of space. While I’d argue that galaxy 2 was simply going for something a bit brighter and more colourful. I think the best way to see the difference is in the box art. Galaxy 1 has the dark backdrop of space while galaxy 2 has a bright blue sky. Furthermore you equate story and level design as equal. While it certainly depends on the game, I’d argue in Mario games in particular the gameplay and level design is far more important. That’s not to say the story of galaxy 1 should have not wait and lack of one in galaxy 2 doesn’t matter, all I mean is I’d argue (as you said yourself) that galaxy 2 has much better levels and improved gameplay which imo is more important than it having a compelling story.
I think Super Mario Galaxy 2 is to Super Mario Galaxy what Tears of the Kingdom is to Breath of the Wild, a sequel that builds upon the original with more ideas, more content, and just overall a bigger game, but nowhere near as innovative or creative as the original (even though Super Mario Galaxy 2 has slightly better level design than Galaxy 1 imo). That being said, I like Super Mario Galaxy 2 more than 1 for Yoshi, the levels and the soundtrack, and I like Breath of the Wild more for it’s creative innovation, the 'fresh new world exploration' (Tears of the Kingdom did a good job at reusing the same world, but no matter how much they changed it doesn’t change the fact that I’ve been in this same world before, and the first time around exploring this world WAS a fresher and more intruiging experience than revisiting the same world with new clothes).
Galaxy 1 still reigns supreme in terms of storytelling, soundtrack, atmosphere, etc. But where Galaxy 2 shines is in replayability. I don't think any of the levels in Galaxy 2 were unfair or annoying to complete (except some of the green stars and perfect run.) In addition, the timer that appears after every mission makes it fun to try for new best times, even on levels that aren't racing based. Finally, the green stars were a much better way to unlock the final level compared to replaying the entire game, cutscenes, textboxes, and all in the first game. some of Galaxy 2's levels do feel like they are obstacle courses floating in the sky though, and the frequent use of the "blue sky and clouds" skybox really sells that feeling. However, they are still much more fun to replay than some of the stars in the first game. I still like Galaxy 1 more though but would replay both any day.
Really? I don't think I've seen one person hating on Galaxy 2, ever. At the worst, I see people who say it's not as good as the first one, but that's it.
@NeoKokoro20 Maybe what I mean is that what I seem to see online is mainly the negative aspects, and that to me meant hate. I should say it's good to hear "it's not a bad sequel", and it's good to see so many positives about it being discussed
For all the game's faults in terms of storytelling and atmosphere, I just appreciate how Mario Galaxy 2 gave us one of the most batshit insane Bowser fight. That almost looked like something straight out of Bayonetta. It is criminal that this game didn't get included in the 3D All-Stars
As a kid I always thought you _couldn't_ collect the green stars unless you played as Luigi. I later realized, to my dismay, that this isn't the case (you can still get them as Mario), but I like to pretend that its true. Lets call it my own personal head canon.
i like starship mario way more than the comet observatory for 2 reasons: - It’s a lot easier and faster to navigate to different levels (it’s literally just one button) - There’s so much more to do on it. Comet observatory didn’t even have any starbits on it!
I wouldn't call it a *bad* sequel, just less atmospheric than the first game. I may love Galaxy 1 more, but Galaxy 2 is still a great game 😀 Great video btw 💯💯🔥🔥 Also yeah Lubba being a twist villain would have been awesome 🔥💯🔥💯
galaxy 2 was my only experience w a galaxy game n i do not regret it ! it's a fantastic & enjoyable ride despite its lesser story . i do wish 2 play its prequel someday
Honestly, I'm a year late to post this, but to expand upon my opinion. I was 5 years old when Mario Galaxy 1 came out. As a child, I never explored any videogames. When I saw Mario Galaxy 1 ads for the game, I begged my mother to get me a Wii console, I was lucky to have a grandma who owned one and allowed me to get the game. Booting up my first ever videogame of my life, there's this one moment I could never get out of my head: After Mario is knocked unconscious by Kamek and launched into the vacuum of space, Peaches castle was lifted off the ground and taken away, AND Peach being taken to the center of the Universe, we have Luma wake Mario up, and when Mario wakes up, we have this one shot where the camera zooms out showing the tiny tutorial planet Mario is on, and a tiny little jingle plays. I may have been 5 years old, but the feelings I felt were indescribable. I felt, alone, trapped, and mostly small. Small on this tiny dwarf planet, in the vacuum of infinity. But that one moment that cemented my love for Galaxy 1 was when I 100% the game for my first time, the first game I ever 100%, and watching Rosalina fly off into space with the beautiful orchestral peace "Family" playing truly made that game special. Not only was it my family that got me Mario Galaxy, but it also helped me meet friends and relationships within the gaming world that became MY family as I got older. For a Mario game, Galaxy 1 is not only a space game or Mario game, it's a beautiful masterpiece. While Galaxy 2 has the gameplay, the power ups, and Yoshi, I never could get that feeling I got with Galaxy 1. In either case, both games hold a very special place in my heart and is the sole reason I am a gamer.
One thing I loved about the first Galaxy is actually how different it was to everything that came before it, but it definitely still felt like a Mario game. Galaxy 2 added back a lot of those elements that weren't in the first one (yoshi, checkpoint flags, the world map, a lot more music tracks from older games than the first game, and literally importing an entire level from 64), and many of the new elements in that game (i.e. those red & blue sided platforms that flip when you spin) became mainstays in future games, making the game feel less special overall. Also, the soundtrack in Galaxy 2 is much more generic and less inspired than the first game. Not to mention that there are a handful of things from the first game that are just not in the 2nd game at all, like the Red Star. The only two times I felt any emotion playing the 2nd game was during Cosmic Cove Galaxy and hearing Bowser's Galaxy Reactor at the end of The Perfect Run.
Another thing that gives Galaxy 2 a slight edge is it's graphics. Galaxy 2 seems to have an overall more colorful pallet. Not only that, it also seems to have more polygons as well which is most noticeable in cutscenes.
I’ve seen lots of people bring up how Galaxy 2’s story isn’t as good as the original’s and I’d just like to say to everyone that it’s the same as the original’s so I have no clue what makes Galaxy 2’s story not as good. Also the only reason the Star Festival happened again is because of the Universe Reset essentially resetting the Universe thus technically 100 have passed since the first game because the Universe reset. Also also, I saw somewhere that apparently Lubba was supposed to have a backstory but it got cut I think? Also also also, currently the closest we have to a backstory for Lubba is the fact that him and Rosalina know each other
It is absolutely and unequivocally not the same. The presentation is far more epic in Galaxy 1, from the cutscenes, to the music. I’m not sure what you’re talking about and it makes you sound like you didn’t pay any attention when playing the first game.
@@Cheddar_Wizard It’s the exact same story. Bowser kidnaps Peach. Creates a galaxy in the centre of the universe. Mario must travel to the centre of the universe to save Peach. It’s the *exact* same damn thing. Galaxy 1 just has extra flair, because why retell the exact same story the exact same way for a second time?
@@generalcrab0009 Buddy, it’s the EXACT same story every Mario game. Does not mean presentation and story beats can change, like the star festival being crashed by Bowser and Peach’s castle being abducted, the somber moment when the Lumas sacrifice themselves to save the galaxy, when Bowser’s Galaxy Reactor theme plays when you approach Bowser’s final platform… Is nuance really that difficult for you to comprehend? And you seriously liked your own misinformed comment?
@@Cheddar_Wizard Exactly. It’s the exact same story every single time. Galaxy isn’t unique. It’s literally just the generic story with space theming. Also, I didn’t like my comment.
@@generalcrab0009 You are truly dense dude. Did you even read the first half of my comment? When in Galaxy 2 do the Luma’s sacrifice themselves? When does that ever happen in any Mario game for that matter? Just because the overarching story is the same (rescue Princess Peach does not mean every story beat, theme, and journey is the same, as is apparent from what I just said about Galaxy 1. Again, you are clearly not mentally acute enough to understand nuance, themes, and story moments.
I have a really strong bond with Super Mario Galaxy, I played it when I was younger with my father and honestly it gives me chills every time someone mentions it. I would really love to play another galaxy with my father once again. Love you papa❤️
The problem about Galaxy 2 for me is not only atmosphere and story, but also how little each Galaxy is explored. Each Galaxy only has 3 stars max, one of them being a comet. The progression we got in Honeyhive or Battlerock is just absent, and semi-open spaces open for exploration is also nonexistent other than Starshine Galaxy. Galaxy 2 might still have better levels individually, sure, but does it have a better collection of levels? Not necessarily so.
@@callinater6133 It's not give or take. Galaxy 1's approach makes more sense because some galaxies are better as 1-offs and some have more room for exploration. Galaxy 2 tries to fit every galaxy in the same mold, and in the end made some galaxies underutilized and some galaxies containing irrelevant missions (Melty Monster Galaxy being the most obvious example).
I love galaxy 2, but I easily prefer galaxy 1. I just like the level design and atmosphere better in Galaxy 1 since galaxy 2 feels too linear with how the world map is structured but with galaxy one the way you travel to different galaxies feels like they’re so far out the way they’re set up on the world map and makes it feel more like a true space adventure. Galaxy 2 may have introduced more new mechanics but Galaxy 1 for me was far more memorable (and I prefer a lot of the galaxies from galaxy 1 more)
Hey, I enjoyed this video once I realized it was more of a review of the game, despite certain disagreements with how we view it, but I was sort of surprised of how little the idea of what makes a good sequel was discussed at all in the video. Maybe it’s reductive to summarize, but the conclusion I drew was that your answer was like “sure I guess it depends on your taste idk” rather than talking about the nature of video game sequels and why this game in particular is an interesting case study. It felt like the title is misleading or maybe the vision of this essay got lost somewhere. Sort of irritating, but I still appreciate the effort put in.
I need to get my hands on this game. I hope it gets a release for the Switch. I finally got to play the first one on the Switch as I never got on the Wii. Great discussion!
I really recommend you getting a Wii and modding it. Nintendo is not rereleasing the game any time soon and with how cheap the Wii is (it's cheaper than a Switch game with accessories), you'll be able to play this amazing console with some of the greatest Nintendo games ever. Mario Kart Wii, SMG1 and 2, Brawl, Twilight Princess, and all the GameCube games.
I'd love a new SMG with the Koopalings. I'd also love to see its crazy aesthetics and concepts for a new 2D Mario that's not just sea/desert/forest/sky etc.
The problem it has can be mostly summarized by having the same problem every other direct sequel any other groundbreaking, revolutionary masterpiece has; it's going to be directly compared to The First One(tm) and that will ultimately skew most people's perceptions about it.
I'm playing through Galaxy 2 right now, I love this game. The first Mario Galaxy is still my favorite Mario game of all time, but TBH this isn't that far off!
No offense man, but are you sure about that final Bowser fight? I've heard people call it one of Bowser's worst final fights because that second phase is way too easy. But I still respect your opinion of course.
Difficulty isn’t the only problem imo. Bowser is easy in 1, but that feels like a better final boss because it feels like bowser is pulling all the stops. He utilises most of the skills that you have learnt in game in order to create a boss that feels like a test of your skills. Bowser will turn into one of those rock things that you see in the first level, he’ll turn into a spiky ball which you need to use the green plants to counter and he’ll spin attack you, which you can counter with your own spin. Galaxy 2 doesn’t have this. It’s simply the same fight as before, but with more lasers and fire, which we’ve already seen. The setting is also a big point. In galaxy 1, you’re in the center of the universe. You can see the massive reactor whilst you’re fighting. In galaxy 2, you’re in the same void you were in that last two times. The difficulty is the cherry on the cake here. There are other factors, like the buildup and payoff, but I’m only focusing on the fight itself here.
I am heavily biased. Galaxy was my first Mario game ever and I fell in love. Even after going back and playing through the first galaxy I just still love Galaxy 2 since it has so many memories engraved in the game for me. It’s actually crazy, the soundtrack was so inspiring to me at a young age, that I’m now a music composer writing for orchestras!
You gave Mario galaxy so many compliments in the beginning that I actually started laughing. I also think it’s a good game, but there was literally a complement every sentence lol.
I really hope that Nintendo makes all Mario Games available on Switch. At this point, they know how much their customers crave for these games. However, I also understand that the resources they have need to be considered, and not everything can be done at the same time. And they always need to check if they can provide them in the quality they originally had, and if and how this quality can be improved. Nintendo, please take my money 😢 Edit: Forgot to mention that I love your videos, and if Nintendo doesn’t pay you, they really should. Every time I see one of your videos, I want to play the games instantly 😂 Good job 😊
I will love both games for different reasons, some shared, some not. The fabulous mystique of the original, or the incredibly fun galaxies of the second one. The sense of loneliness mixed in with beauty of the original, or the whimsical and wonderful environments of the second one. I am glad that Super Mario Galaxy 2 decided not to be 1 but again, exploring different concepts of the boundless posibilities of the cosmos was done in very beautiful ways in both games.
Comparing SMG 1 and 2 is a bit like comparing Forza Horizon 1 and 2. 2 improved in gameplay terms by adding weather effects, a bigger map with more drivable space, tuning for the suspension/brakes/tyres/etc. and a bigger car roster. However, 1 had an unmatched atmosphere, with characters (both antagonists and allies) you're introduced to, cutscenes, an anonymous character who you play as that gets mentioned by other characters as you progress through the game, and attention to detail in the world and UI, all of which made it a very engaging game to play through.
For real i played galaxy 2 then 1 and galaxy 1 feeled alone
Galaxy 1 had the better atmosphere and story imo
As someone who only played this and never the first game, can't comment
Galaxy 2 is basically the first game but if you were to trade the atmosphere and story for even better gameplay thanks to the World Map allowing you to get into levels faster, better level design and power ups. While I can absolutely see why others wouldn't like this change, I for one am all for it. I still think Galaxy 1 is a masterpiece, but I definitely prefer its sequel.
Agreed and I like what they did with the hub area. The star ship mario was just so charming and even though it was small it just worked well imo
Imo SMG1 had slightly better level design. Less linearity and more sandbox overall. But I could see why you’d prefer SMG2’s level design, which had many more gimmicks, power-ups, gravity antics.
Kinda cap, we got more mechanics and power ups in the 1st game then this
Luma (P2) being that much better in SMG2 makes it impossible to play SMG1 for me as Luma.
i always found it annoying going from dome to dome when you can just "fast travel". also, as a minor thing not needing to confirm save after every star is also a bit more convenient
galaxy 1 and 2 are the creative peak of mario, we need something groundbreaking like this for the next mario game
Exactly I hope the next game is as good or better

Yes. Odyssey isn’t a Galaxy game. It’s not quite the same; we need a Super Mario Galaxy 3!!
I would love if they announced it for a launch title for the switch 2
Absolutely. Best video games ever
As much as we would all love that, it’s highly unlikely as 1) it’s been 14 years and 2) the second game was only made because of some elements such as Yoshi that didn’t make it into the first game.
FRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I played through Galaxy 2 for the first time in 10-12 years about a month ago, and I absolutely loved it. Before that I always preferred Galaxy 1, forgetting almost everything about Galaxy 2 from the bosses to the galaxies. Galaxy 2 has become my favorite Mario and and favorite game ever
Yea same happened for me
I think galaxy 2 still has a lot of atmospheric galaxies, like Slimy Spring or Cosmic Cove. Yeah, its not as much as the first game, but I think it's pretty cool how Galaxy 2 sort of blended the atmosphere from galaxy with the classic and happy mario atmosphere.
Slimy Spring is one of the most beautiful Mario levels ever, wish we saw more like it
Cosmic cove is so wonderful. The atmosphere is fantastic.
Prediction. He's going to say it's not a bad sequel
We need a trequel
The best mario series by far
Seems as if we will never know
Wtf is a trequel

It’s not beating Super Mario World or even Super Mario 3D World
@@lonecom685 Fair enough! To each their own!
14:31 this galaxy implies that Mario went to space to get to this level in Mario64
The green stars were such an awesome touch that put Galaxy 2 a bit higher in regard for me than its predecessor. But man, that final scene with the lumas in Galaxy 1 sacrificing themselves still leaves a mark on me 16 years later. What a beautiful addition

Actually, the Co Star Luma is orange.
Same. They seem like two halves to me; whenever I play galaxy, I have to play galaxy 2 since the two games essentially complete each other if you know what I mean.
galaxy 2: has the greatest level design in any 3d platformer out there
mikester: is it bad?
Honestly one of my favorite galaxies was Clockwork Ruins because of the background art in the level. The giant towers and the mysterious planet below always fascinated me. The same goes for the ending section of Slimey Spring Galaxy with the sunset and wide expanse. I also gotta include the last Bower level with the huge castle hallway in the background. This sort of goes for a majority of the rest
This is my 2nd favorite Mario game. It was a massive shame that it wasn't included in 3d all stars
"Is Super Mario Galaxy 2 a bad sequel?"
Is the earth flat?
The green stars alone make me prefer it. So much more to do since the postgame is not just the same game with Luigi
growing up with the Galaxy series i will say that you are right i think both games were grate in there own right i was to young to understand these caveats but you explaining them gave me a flood of wonderful memories and new appreciations for both games
i wish they made a 3rd game combining aspects like the story and atmosphere and story from G1 and the gameplay improvements and post-game from G2 and make it have more open world exploration like other 3D Marios but I've been craving Super Mario Galaxy 3 for a really long time now
No but I don't understand why Galaxy 2 wasn't just DLC, like it could be a 19.99$ DLC which just added Yoshi and some exclusive galaxies including Lubba and Luma Master
I agree with a lot of what you said but a couple of places where we deviate:
I do like the effort you put to make sure the wheel is spinning in the correct order (until world 6) 9:43
I like Galaxy 2, but I vastly prefer the gameplay and atmosphere of the first game. I'm looking at the list of galaxies and I just don't think most of them compare to the ones in the first game. The ones that I love are:
1: Flip switch
2: Puzzle Plank, Cosmic Cove
3: Freezeflake, Haunty Halls
4: Sweet Mystery
5: Everything except Upside Dizzy
6: Melty Monster, Throwback, and Slimy Spring
Special: Flip out and Grandmaster
Tbh I don't remember any of the Bowser levels that well.
In Galaxy 1
1: Good Egg, Honeyhive, Sweet Sweet, Robot Reactor
2: Space Junk, BattleRock, Star Reactor, Rolling Green, Hurry Scurry
3: Beach Bowl, Ghostly, Buoy Base, Bubble Breeze
4: All of them
5: All of them
6: All of them (except snowcap)
The original had fewer galaxies but each of the main ones felt like they were given more depth in comparison.
I feel like this video is just a regular retrospective of SMG2 while using the title "Is Super Mario Galaxy 2 a Bad Sequel" to attract clicks
25:11 -- It took me over 120 attempts to complete that mission (and two separate days of playing)! My heart was beating a mile a minute near the end and my palms got sweaty. However, I'm proud of myself for not giving up! 💪 (Trust me, if you've beaten Luigi's Purple Coins and Lava Spire Daredevil Run from the first game, you've seen nothing yet.)
26:14 -- I'm one of those people!
How could anyone call something that's literally just more of the original a bad sequel?
what matters is that we got some of the best soundtracks from galaxy 1 and 2

Dude I'm a YT veteran and your video STUNNED me. This is so well done. Congrats.
I've never met anyone who dislikes this game, everyone I've spoken to has told me it's the best mario game in the series.
These two games are the peak of 3D Mario.
Galaxy 2 has some of the most clever and creative levels and boss fights
@@toddpacker4683 Yeah I agree.
(P.S. No matter how much I dislike the boobbot, it's still a better boss then megaleg, fight me I dare you)
Agreed
i never liked mario galaxy 2 like i loved the first game.. i could never really wrap my hand around WHY !
because i still loved all the levels, but something just felt off..
after i heard your critique of the sequel, it all made sense ! the atmosphere of the two games is so different.., the story is what makes the first game so emotional and even kind of.. rushing ?
and i think that collecting stars also feels more rewarding in the first game
Since the last thing that matters to me personally in a Mario game is the story, I’m on the side of Galaxy 2 being the better game.
I love them both very much, but the 2nd was just bigger, and more of what I wanted. And minor things like not preferring the map didn’t change that at all.
Hey I just wanted to say I love your videos and really appreciate your passion and hard work. Thank you :)
Peace be upon you guys and ABSOLUTELY NOT!
23:43 Can we appreciate how well done this part is?
I would love this series to continue, galaxy 2 is my favourite galaxy 1 just feels like your alone in the middle of no where
Galaxy 2 has the best hub world in Mario games
I'm so glad to see all the love for Galaxy 2. I've always loved it, but there's so much hate for it. They're both phenomenal games!
Really? I don't think I've seen one person hating on Galaxy 2, ever. At the worst, I see people who say it's not as good as the first one, but that's it.
@@NeoKokoro20 And the only reason they say that is cause "the story isn't as good" as if every Mario game doesn't have the same plot.
@NeoKokoro20 Maybe what I mean is that what I seem to see online is mainly the negative aspects, and that to me meant hate. I should say it's good to hear "it's not a bad sequel", and it's good to see so many positives about it being discussed
Super mario galaxy is just masterpiece sadly i never played galaxy 2
For all the game's faults in terms of storytelling and atmosphere, I just appreciate how Mario Galaxy 2 gave us one of the most batshit insane Bowser fight. That almost looked like something straight out of Bayonetta. It is criminal that this game didn't get included in the 3D All-Stars
As a kid I always thought you _couldn't_ collect the green stars unless you played as Luigi. I later realized, to my dismay, that this isn't the case (you can still get them as Mario), but I like to pretend that its true. Lets call it my own personal head canon.
i have to say your editing and commentary style is engaging and an incredibly fun watch! You do our childhood favorites justice!
i like starship mario way more than the comet observatory for 2 reasons:
- It’s a lot easier and faster to navigate to different levels (it’s literally just one button)
- There’s so much more to do on it. Comet observatory didn’t even have any starbits on it!
*OF COURSE IT'S NOT A BAD SEQUEL! After all, I played the second game first and the first game second.*
I wouldn't call it a *bad* sequel, just less atmospheric than the first game. I may love Galaxy 1 more, but Galaxy 2 is still a great game 😀
Great video btw 💯💯🔥🔥
Also yeah Lubba being a twist villain would have been awesome 🔥💯🔥💯
galaxy 2 was my only experience w a galaxy game n i do not regret it ! it's a fantastic & enjoyable ride despite its lesser story . i do wish 2 play its prequel someday
mario galaxy 2 and mario galaxy will always remain my favourite games by far of all the games ever made.
Booting up my first ever videogame of my life, there's this one moment I could never get out of my head:
After Mario is knocked unconscious by Kamek and launched into the vacuum of space, Peaches castle was lifted off the ground and taken away, AND Peach being taken to the center of the Universe, we have Luma wake Mario up, and when Mario wakes up, we have this one shot where the camera zooms out showing the tiny tutorial planet Mario is on, and a tiny little jingle plays.
Galaxy 1: Has better world building, progression, and story
Galaxy 2: Has better gameplay and genuinely fun level design
On the other hand, galaxy 1 has a crap ton of 1 star galaxies. The galaxies with 6/7 stars only make up 15 of the galaxies. It’s give or take really.
Galaxy 2 may have introduced more new mechanics but Galaxy 1 for me was far more memorable (and I prefer a lot of the galaxies from galaxy 1 more)
Amazing video. Just move from Scotland to Australia gonna ask my dad to send over my Wii so i can replay this now!
We all know the answer before watching the video.
Of course not, it’s one of the most loved sequels of all time.
Man, seeing the perfect run again made me feel both nostalgic and ptsd
I need to get my hands on this game. I hope it gets a release for the Switch. I finally got to play the first one on the Switch as I never got on the Wii. Great discussion!
I really recommend you getting a Wii and modding it. Nintendo is not rereleasing the game any time soon and with how cheap the Wii is (it's cheaper than a Switch game with accessories), you'll be able to play this amazing console with some of the greatest Nintendo games ever. Mario Kart Wii, SMG1 and 2, Brawl, Twilight Princess, and all the GameCube games.
@@Rigby103_epic I had a Wii but it broke.
I'd love a new SMG with the Koopalings. I'd also love to see its crazy aesthetics and concepts for a new 2D Mario that's not just sea/desert/forest/sky etc.
cant imagine how long this video took to make. This is amazing.
The problem it has can be mostly summarized by having the same problem every other direct sequel any other groundbreaking, revolutionary masterpiece has; it's going to be directly compared to The First One(tm) and that will ultimately skew most people's perceptions about it.
hehehe, hearing the song at the end again gave me the hugest bit of goosebumps ive had in ages.
I thought the pacing in mario galaxy was sometimes a bit slow and galaxy 2 fixed it. I love it
I'm playing through Galaxy 2 right now, I love this game. The first Mario Galaxy is still my favorite Mario game of all time, but TBH this isn't that far off!
No offense man, but are you sure about that final Bowser fight? I've heard people call it one of Bowser's worst final fights because that second phase is way too easy. But I still respect your opinion of course.
The problem is that people online usually view those things through only difficulty, easy - bad, difficult - good, when there's so much more to it.
It feels more climactic
Hopefully we'll get a Switch release someday, it should have been included in 3D All Stars.
How to write orchestra
I always want to learn from Mozart but at last I composed sth in a mess
You gave Mario galaxy so many compliments in the beginning that I actually started laughing. I also think it’s a good game, but there was literally a complement every sentence lol.
Cause it was that good FYM 😂 shit I even think the first ones fire
just stumbled upon your channel. really enjoy your chill laidback yet passionate attitude :)
Nintendo, please take my money 😢
Edit: Forgot to mention that I love your videos, and if Nintendo doesn’t pay you, they really should.
