I love willow as bonsai, so many different ways to experiment growing these trees. I agree, occasional die back at times seemingly for no reason. We have an extensive variety selection for cuttings here.
I love willows, thank you for mentioning them! Well suited for some quite unusual styles, many interesting species around, often mixing across the taxons, very playful material! Also, they can teach people, new to bonsai, how to deal with the cycle of life and death of their trees, because they are so willingly diebacking for numerous reasons and you must learn how to accept it. And on the other hand, willows are so vigorous and eager for life, rooting from everywhere, sometimes even when you put cutting upside down. Would be lovely to have an episode with some Alder trees. Are there any in your nursery?
well well well... Peter..at the back end of july this year i planted a part of a branch from a willow (not very old)...and put it in a foot long pot that was not used, in hope of developing it into a forest, so 3 month later and it has shot up & is about 3 ft high...i knew they are a vigorous tree but i didn't expect it to be as big as it is...love it, all the best to you and yours, take care, Gordon Wigham.
I recognise your guests: Katharina is the President of the Frankfurt am Main (Germany) Bonsai club, called Bonsaifreunde E.V. How nice to see them in your workshop!
I'm trying to train a willow group, just experimenting with what I have. It was only later I found out about the weeping issues in bonsai, and I know you can also use guide wires for a more natural shape, but I saw this tree in the first book (and it inspired me to have my own willow), and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it develops :)

As a willow lover, I've been waiting for this video! Thank you!
I love willows. A park near me has willows along the river. They have been there since I was small. I am now 57. In the last 5 years many have broke in the wind because branches too heavy. The local council don't trim them
Dear sir. I have that book in English. It was the first book I had ever read about bonsai. The most amazing thing is that it was given to me by my mom and dad. They wrote me an inspirational note on it and sign it individually. It's one of my greatest treasures. My father passed away a couple of years ago and I recognized the picture of the willow tree. You inspired me to try bonsai and still, I have some but I'm just ammature. I realized that you are coming to Canada and I would love to meet you. You inspired me like my father. Can you please post where and when you will be in Canada? I want to meet the man that also made me love the art of bonsai.
You do have a precious memory. I began bonsai this year . My parents have passed on , but this is how I continue my connection to my mom and the love and wisdom she imparted to me for art and nature. In memory of my dad, my plants listen to operas, jazz, and classical. He dreamt of being a maestro. Training and growing Bonsai is very much like becoming a maestro , although we can’t hear , it all plants sing vibrationally when they grow. Peace to you , good therapy , and health. I picked up a deal at home depot for $80 , a braided willow 3 1/2 feet tall. I will make my own cement pot for it. Right now, I’m cramming in bonsai knowledge as fast as I can.
These videos are meant to be in the background on my 2nd screen while I work. But I keep on watching them more than working! Thank you for such informative, yet soothing content! I've learned a lot. And while learning about a lot of the nuances of bonsai, I've also learned to be less scared of messing up. That parts of trees die. That experimentation is fine. It's both added interest and complexity to bonsai, while making it much less mysterious and intimidating.
I have several large willows and the one thing you have to watch is that they grow so fast they choke themselves into the wire, so you have to keep an eye on them
I have a grey willow in my garden, I dug it out of a drain behind where I work. It was either bring it home or they were gonna kill it before it got too big. So now he’s getting used to his new pot out my back garden. It’s a lot nice than his old home.
I have some willow cuttings they root so easy. I also use the fresh leaves and steep in water and use it on my cacti very good natural hormone that promotes pupping in cacti
I have a few willows simply because they are easy to propagate and I sometimes take cuttings from interesting places I have been. this really helps with what to do with them
Willows actually got me into bonsai, because of how incredibly fast they root and grow. On the other hand, they can get scorched so hard they can look like burned by a flamethrower. They need to be kept in a slight shade and bathing in water during summer, or they will not make it. I lost several nicely-shaped cuttings, that would make great bonsai because I forgot to water them for one day during 40°C heatwaves. They regrew immediately back from the bottom, but all the nice shapes gone.
@@yummy8074 i had 6 cuttings, 1 survived and then he got spider mites so i put him outside sprayed him down and left him out, figured if he survived great if not it just wasn’t meant to be. He’s thriving on my front porch gets a good watering almost daily, just moved into a bigger pot and the roots were insane! Now I’d like to bring him back inside but i think it’d probably kill him 🤦🏼♀️😅
This is so educating and from such a person whom has wisdom is amazing to watch im in love with willow they are mu favorite from childhood im watching these videos in hopes to be able to grow one of my own so thankyou
I've been experimenting with willows growing on/ in freshwater aquariums. I've had a lot of success... except for my roommates cat so I have no long term progress to report. I have hope though as I've seen a lot of mangroves grown on saltwater/brackish setups
@@bgertsma he just doesn't like the willow. I have a 20 gallon tank with little privet in a rock garden with creeping fig and moss that he doesn't bother. I tried to scale up to a 110g with a weeping willow and honeysuckle and he won't leave it be. The 20g is so pretty tho, so Imma keep trying
@@eliharper6616 I can imagine, the cat I used to have would eat my lucky bamboo. I finally resorted to placing it on top of the fridge, any lower and he wouldn't leave it be. The cat long out lived my bamboo :)
thank you for this, willow was my mothers favorite, its depressing to hear they are hard to keep alive as she want to have her ashes added to one and I didnt want it to die, and I have never done this before.
Imagine my surprise when two days after speaking to you on the telephone for some advice about a Willow, you published a video about Willow’s! Was that intentional or subliminal? Either way, another most informative and enjoyable video, thank you.
I never manage to keep them alive. They all die, or branches die. They are going all black and die. I think it's maybe too much water?? Have you got a solution or a method to keep them in good condition? Thanks a lot
I have a weeping willow that is about a year old or so, but I had to banish it to the outside because it got infested with spider mites. Is there anything that I can do to get rid of them completely? They got a hold of my willow AND wisteria 😭
I wish the cameraman actually showed the work as it was taking place. The camera distance is too far away to see what is happening. But his dialogue and discussion was helpful nonetheless.
You can also put a ball of play dough on the ends to create the weep I've been planting cuttings of mine and give away. I'm not sure why environmentalists aren't pushing trees.

Holy moly the roots from that willow is unbelievable. Even though the tree was dying it still looks amazing….great video Peter 👍🏻

I hope you work for yourself because if you work for someone else and are watching my RUclips videos all the time, you will get the sack !! Ha Ha.
willow bonsai training..i am learning here now ..Mr Peter
I have several large willows and the one thing you have to watch is that they grow so fast they choke themselves into the wire, so you have to keep an eye on them
Why even wire a willow? I think people wire way to much these times.
As peter said to help small trees weep
Leaving wire on for a season or two too long adds character to the trunk. It’s adds an interesting line when the wire bits the tree

I’d love to
See an update on the 48 yr old willow bonsai
I almost bought a cheapy willow today. It should have been! Maybe I'll pop back!
Omg!! I love how you made it look like the Willow!! I’m working on 3 new ones I’m new at it and will follow you🙏🏼
Thank you for sharing this. I now have a bit of vision for my willows
So NOW I know why my willow cuttings refuse to weep. Thank you, Peter.
Why didnt it weep?
He did so well with it! I love this one! Currently, I'm growing Willow clippings.
I adore willows and am very happy to see new life shaping up in both trees!
I have some willow cuttings they root so easy. I also use the fresh leaves and steep in water and use it on my cacti very good natural hormone that promotes pupping in cacti
I love willows, they are beautiful when the wind blows its leaves.

I really love this video. I have been curious about Willows for a long time and I would like to grow one suitable to my climate
Thanks Peter.
Thx for sharing Peter 👍
It would be awesome if we got updates on the 1974 book willow whenever you work on it!
I have a couple of bottlebrush plants in large pots, I think they can be turned into weeping willow kind of bonsais 😊
When will you have cuttings available for purchase? I'd love to have a willow, especially this one, since it has history behind it.

I now feel like I can get mine done with this thank you for explains when to plant them too
Have you ever done an update on that half-dead juniper that you revived about a year ago? I am dying to see how that turned out.
I just started with a Pollard Willow 😁
There’s a curly leave wiping willow!
i made cuttings from my curly willow this spring. The stems are curly They have rooted and grown well. I would share cuttings with anyone in the US.
Amazing Peter 48 years later.👌🏽
Thank you for teaching us all what you know. Respect Sir.
Thanks for experience 🙂

I’m training a “Scarlett weeping curls”
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 thanks Peter
This is salix alba, the white willow. The weeping willow is salix babylonica.
Different types of salix (willow).
What kind of tree is the one in the video next to him?
I have this book
I have a weeping willow that is about a year old or so, but I had to banish it to the outside because it got infested with spider mites. Is there anything that I can do to get rid of them completely? They got a hold of my willow AND wisteria 😭
Use insectrin dust... with permethrin insecticide.. infected leaves are pretty much gone.. new shoots will not get infected

After I wired my willow about the same size as this some of the branches died, please help,I did mine before I saw this video.
Same size as the first you wired

What is the name of the book ?

Willow and apple, it would seem show their age by becoming a mountain of half rotten structure with fresh life growing in strange places.
