I have to cut one down at my fathers house. My heart was breaking as I started cutting it as my mom, who passed away 3 years ago had planted it. your video was still new when I planted my first willow tree, which was the size of span and the thickness of a pencil. Now I'm watching the video under the tree.
willow is so full of natural rooting hormone it will grow anywhere. I have made cuttings from branches of up to 10 cm in diameter, if you cut a piece off and plant it will grow, if you chop it up into small pieces and make a willow tea, put it in the water of your other cuttings it will increase the rooting hormone to encourage your other plants to root. amazing trees! I use my willows around the garden for fences, trellis, supports for climbers, and basketry.
I was watching a video on RUclips of people using a ' chipper shredder ' to mulch up an existing Willow Tree , they did a follow up video on the mulch which had sprouted . Willow is basically harder to kill than cactus . So long as it stays wet it will regrow .
Super video, thank you. It's always nice to watch a video where the speaker is enthusiastic and loves what they are talking about. Looking forward to the next video.
I love trees and plants!! Just want you to beware of Willow trees so close to your house or pipelines have to be very careful to not plant it near any sewer pipes running through your yard or neighbors yard they have very invasive, shallow roots 100 feet long. The roots look for water and will grow till they find water so they can keep a constant sipping action.
Is this less of a problem on riverbanks because the water is there? we have some erosion problems but want to keep the riverbank using native plants and not the invasive ways our neighbours have. No houses close regardless and no pipes down on the bank either. Thanks and hope you are well!
@@lookforward2life I would think so. The willow may grow her root as much as to keep her from falling down too. I don't really have much experience with full grown willows on river banks!! @@Leyenda1 Well, they all propagated perfectly. I had hundreds of them. Then we had a record breaking heat wave that took every single one out. My entire collection was fried. Hey brother, thank you for the video. I appreciate your positive attitude and your tips. Please let me share a correction I have for you about watering willow cuttings. I recently had 18 Willow cuttings from CZ grain all turn black on certain parts and then slowly wither to death. I could not figure out what went wrong but after using Open AI’s Chat GPT I got this answer which explains that I could have overwatered them: I asked, “why did my Willow Cuttings turn black and die: “There could be a few reasons why your willow cuttings turned black and died: Overwatering: Willows require moist soil, but too much water can lead to root rot and suffocate the plant. If the soil is constantly wet, the roots may not be able to take in oxygen, leading to the plant's death. Lack of moisture: On the other hand, if the cuttings did not receive enough water, they may have dried out and died. Willows prefer consistently moist soil, so it's important to ensure they receive enough water. Disease or fungus: Willows are susceptible to a few different diseases and fungal infections that can cause them to turn black and die. Some common diseases include crown gall, black canker, and willow blight. Pests: Certain pests, such as borers and aphids, can damage willow cuttings and cause them to die. If you notice any signs of pests, such as holes in the stems or leaves, it's important to address the issue promptly. Incorrect cutting technique: If the cuttings were not taken properly, they may not have had a chance to root and establish themselves before dying. It's important to take cuttings from healthy, disease-free plants and use sharp, clean tools to make the cut. If you can identify the cause of the problem, you may be able to take steps to prevent it from happening in the future. It's also a good idea to consult a local gardening expert or extension office for specific advice on growing willows in your area.” Now, I used a mycorrhiza inoculant as well and I have to wonder if this particular product does not work with Willow Cuttings, even though the package says it is good for cuttings. I just put them in water till they got a great big ball of roots on the bottom then took them out to the field planet them and never touch them again and they’re doing fine. They went through a Canadian winter.
A point about overwatering. They get blighted, but the blight will almost never kill the plant. They can literally grow in a dirty bucket. Eventually they will need nutrients. You can keep these in a bucket from fall to spring.
I took some cutting and they did good (had branches and leaves )until I potted it it began to wilt and is dying …. Any thought on what I can do different I used bonsai soil btw
I looked for that link to the Etsy store where you got your basket weaving slips but couldn’t see it in the write up on this video. Another pot you could use for your willow slips is the self-watering ones, most have a deep reservoir for any water to collect.

I’ve noticed that some of my cuttings in water have leaves that are growing downwards meaning that I put the shoots in the wrong way. Are these no longer good or can I turn the shoot still?
I got some cuttings from the same shop. I'm glad I watched this video because I was going to put more than one cutting in a pot. Or is it ok to put more than one as long as the pot is big enough? 🤔🌱
Question: if I put them in a glass of water, got them to root well, when do you suggest I move them to soil? I'm nervous they'll suffer from transplant shock. Thanks!
I planted a dozen or so in solo cups, they all have roots etc. Would you suggest putting holes in the bottom of the cups so the water can run out or for 2 weeks or would having standing water just be fine? I started them all in water. Just looking for your opinion on the solo cups. I have a bunch in other pots that have holes, so those I'm not worried about. I know you said you can't OVER water, but just want to make sure the solo cups with no holes Root on all are from half inch to 1.5 inches with good green buds and tiny leaves.
So willows coming from a cutting. Does it grow up into a pretty straight tree? Or are they pretty misshapen? Do you have any pictures of a 6in cutting 1 or 2 years later?
Great information 👍 I will be trying to plant around a couple hundred this spring any tips would be appreciated do you know if you can propagate cottonwood trees thanks for your time
Not necessary, you can also let it grow naturally and just prune off lower branches until the trunk it up to desired height, on the contrary you can also prune each winter to build more immediate strength in trunk if you’d like.
so thrilled to have found this! thank you so much! I feel I may have screwed up. I have 6 tri-dappled willow bushes that I just trimmed way down and wanted to propagate them for another site by my house. I didn't realize i had to do this in spring or fall, as of course it is august here in North Carolina. Do you think they will still root in the water buckets I put them in? I now know from watching your video on how to clip them off around the nodes!
Do you think it's safe to grow hybrid willows a couple feet from the road for a privacy fence? I'm concerned about the roots lifting the pavement eventually.
Hello from Green Bay. Would now be a good time to try and start some weeping willow cuttings indoors? or is it too early? Thanks in advance. Great video!
I live in GA. I have 2 willow trees that did fantastic last year and I noticed the bark on the base is starting to split and some branches were dying. How can I prevent these from dying?
That's funny, I ordered mine on Amazon from CZ lol I got them sitting in water just hoping they'll grow. I got them to grow a nice little bonsai tree for my Crested Gecko Enclosure
Can you start them in pots inside? I’m in Michigan and I want to start some cuttings today and grow them inside, finally planting them in the Springtime.
I tried some cuttings in water, put some outside, some inside. Some have other cut up cuttings in the water some don't I stuck one in my goldfish tank and it sprouted roots and leaves in 5 days 😂
Hi. I have a 1.5 inch diameter by 18 inch long cork screw willow branch that I have propagated in a pot in soil this summer. It has has a great root system. It's about to be winter here in Georgia. Should I put them in the ground now? They are currently in pots. They have many long branches that have grow over the summer.
Can you take a long Willow stem like 4 ft or 6 ft long and root that? I want to do a spell yay of Willow and I don't want to wait for it to grow we have a gazillion near us and I can cut them
my cuttings are doing great after about a month. green shoots of 4 to 8 " already what do I do now? Do I just let them continue to grow? Trim them to start training as bonsai?
I have never had a bonsai tree but, I just won one on Deal Dash Lol. It came from CZ Grain. I’m excited to learn more about them. Question, so if I plant in the ground, it will grow into a large tree but, if I plant in a pot, will it stay small? Do I eventually need to plant in the ground? I ask because, I don’t have my own house and yard so, I would be keeping it inside.
Which willow "Trees" There are hundreds of verities that range from bus size all the way to massive tree size? I want to do this but don't know which ones work.
I love willows , I have some weeping willows in my yard and they get plenty of water . My question is why is the bark on the bottoms of them separating from the trunk and they look like they are dying but still have great growth on the top of the trees?
Also, make sure whoever is mowing the grass does not hit the trunks with the lawnmower. My husband kept killing my pear trees by hitting them with the mower while mowing the grass around them. He was bad about killing my plants with the lawnmower. Killed my pussywillow, my lavender rose (I don't know how a grown man could mow a whole rose bush down to the ground and not notice) , my crabapple tree and various other trees. I think he would be happy to just have grass growing in the yard and nothing else.
deffinitelly gonna make a kabudachi style bonsai out of these. seems like the cheapest and fastest pethod since theyre already gonna have some thickness right from the start

How long do you keep them in the pots before planting them in the ground?
Curious if you used the “ALL NATURAL PLANTING MIX FOR TREES, SHRUBS, AND ROSES”? Yellow bag and yes I did hear you mention the KELLOGG brand
So willows coming from a cutting. Does it grow up into a pretty straight tree? Or are they pretty misshapen? Do you have any pictures of a 6in cutting 1 or 2 years later?
Great information 👍 I will be trying to plant around a couple hundred this spring any tips would be appreciated do you know if you can propagate cottonwood trees thanks for your time
pronounced like Por porria. Im an herablist and love willow and black cotton wood for tree medicine.
Michael Bahr thanks Mike! That’s great, I’ve been wanting to get more into herbal remedies myself 🌿
You don’t have to use a special soil? I got my tree from cz grain as well. I haven’t planted mine yet because I don’t know what soil to use.
Hi. How often to we water and HOW MUCH do we water? I'm also concerned the soil in my backyard might be too hard. Thoughts?
My cuttings are growing like crazy. Should i be trimming the top shoots regularly?
Not necessary, you can also let it grow naturally and just prune off lower branches until the trunk it up to desired height, on the contrary you can also prune each winter to build more immediate strength in trunk if you’d like.
I’m trying to grow some dappled willow cuttings. I also live in Wisconsin and I’m curious what to do in fall. Any suggestions?
Same here. In zone 4 will my new willow survive its first winter?
so thrilled to have found this! thank you so much!
I think they will root just fine but just need to establish in soil before they are exposed to any extreme cold
Thank you for watching! Glad you’ve found value in the video
@@ExpeditionHomestead thank you!
I have two curly willow tree cuttings and I was wondering since were in August is it to late for them to be planted
Yyeess 3 of my cuttings are now in the ground with roots
I’m a bit nervous cause I just ordered some but I Live in Southern cal so I hope they will grow well without too much water once established.
It's worth the try! They need to stay watered very well during the first two months after planting.
Now would be the perfect time! 🌿
Great video, thanks for the information
Can you root willow in september? Or it wont survive winter?
I live in GA. I have 2 willow trees that did fantastic last year and I noticed the bark on the base is starting to split and some branches were dying. How can I prevent these from dying?
Great video
Would this work with a desert willow?
That's funny, I ordered mine on Amazon from CZ lol I got them sitting in water just hoping they'll grow. I got them to grow a nice little bonsai tree for my Crested Gecko Enclosure
Same I just got mine yesterday and one had a little mold, hopefully they do well.
@@jaydwy8069 hmm, I hope so. But put them in a glass of purifier or rain water for a week or so.
Same
.good advice
Mine have crazy roots being in water. Now for 2 weeks
Would you recommend a clean cut or is a snapped off branch okay?
Just cut the snapped off branch :)
@@ExpeditionHomestead Okay thanks
Can you start them in pots inside? I’m in Michigan and I want to start some cuttings today and grow them inside, finally planting them in the Springtime.
I have before. As long as you have a good window they will be great. Willows are fun
@@benjamenadam2250 thanks! I appreciate that!
It’s doing now and wet in yard can I put directly into ground instead of soaking ..in water ??
yes you can, willows grow really easily but most species like to be planted close to a water source.
I tried some cuttings in water, put some outside, some inside. Some have other cut up cuttings in the water some don't
I stuck one in my goldfish tank and it sprouted roots and leaves in 5 days 😂
You where super helpful thank you so much
That's good willow
Thank you!!
Did you coppice the tree that you took the cuttings from?
Is that a good way to produce a large source of cuttings?
I did more of pollarding with my tree but these cutting were bought on Etsy as well. Yes coppicing is a great way to produce a lot of cuttings
Can you take a long Willow stem like 4 ft or 6 ft long and root that? I want to do a spell yay of Willow and I don't want to wait for it to grow we have a gazillion near us and I can cut them
Funny you would ask! ruclips.net/video/yy3H7a6-du4/видео.html
Is it possible to grow Weeping willow at a temperature of 20 - 30 degree Celsius...
my cuttings are doing great after about a month. green shoots of 4 to 8 " already what do I do now?
Could be lack of nutrients, sun scald, or boring insects and other types of insects that may be damaging bark from underneath
How close to a house and barn can it be planted?
deffinitelly gonna make a kabudachi style bonsai out of these. seems like the cheapest and fastest pethod since theyre already gonna have some thickness right from the start
I’m doing the same thing are your bonsais going to plan?
@@fredbristow261 well I gethered some cuttings and they indeed root very easily but I havent gotten around to plant them in time and they sort of died 😅 I hope to try again sometime tho as it seemed like it would work pretty well
@@michal_king478rip the cuttings 😂 good luck for your future bonsais!
