How BIG Can Willow Tree Cuttings Be?

  • Willow tree cuttings are usually taken at a diameter of about 1/4" but when we pruned the willow tree in the backyard this year, we took some cuttings there were about 1" in diameter to see how they would do. It did take a little bit longer than usual for these cuttings to grow roots but nonetheless they look like they will have some outstanding growth this year.

I usually just pop 5 inch thick, 10 ft tall willow poles(freshly cut branches) in the ground and use them and use them as perimeter fencing poles, they always root so far, i’ve done over 300. I pollard the willows afterwards, i get very durable living fencing poles that way 😁

@@veronicawatson2525 I used top soil as well. Actually only around 50% survived, the bigger/stronger/thicker ones. I also planted them in an area where they were surrounded by trees, which I’m guessing isn’t good since they’re competing for water. Also I would make sure they get enough sun. This might have been another reason why some died. Also don’t bunch then together in one spot as in right next to each other. Give them a little space between each other.

Last summer I pollarded a willow and used the branches to make a runner bean stick frame. The sticks were up to 2 inches thick and about 9ft long. After a few weeks some of them started producing buds. I knocked them off as I didn't want the sticks to take root and grow - just provide a frame for my beans. So larger cuttings do work, but I've no idea if they would be susceptible to disease. Thanks for your videos from the other side of the pond.

I’ve grown cuttings that are 4 feet long. In 2 years my cuttings from 4’ have grown to over 14’ in height. Also regarding roots damaging foundations or pipes, that is a myth. The only reason roots end up inside foundations or pipes, the damage/cracks were already there. Roots tend to find these weak points and end up taking advantage of easy access to water thru these cracks.

Have you tried taking cuttings from Bebb's willow (S. bebbiana)? (It is the willow used for diamond willow walking sticks.)
