    String Of Pearls - you’re downright fabulous growing as a houseplant & in a container in the garden. I’ve grown them in both situations so can we be honest here? Growing them outdoors is much easier, for me anyway.
    I want to share with you why growing a String of Pearls plant indoors can be a bit tricky so hopefully this will help you to keep yours looking as beautiful as those strands around Audrey Hepburn’s neck in Breakfast At Tiffany’s.
    The most common signs that a String Of Pearls isn’t doing well are: the stems and pearls are thinning out, pearls are shriveling, stems are disappearing, & the stems are dying. Our most popular blog post is on String Of Pearls so I get a lot of questions regarding String Of Pearls dying.
    String Of Pearls is definitely a plant with character and seems to be loved here, there and everywhere. I hope this helps keep yours healthy, happy & looking good!

    Very informative video on the String of Pearls. One of the best. Last year was my first attempt at caring for them. I tried 3 times last year to no avail. I've studied up further this time since on succeeding caring for these plants. So far the 2 I bought recently are holding up with no sign of dying. So far so good. Looking forward for them to really take off growing in the summer. I am determined at succeeding with these plants. Thank you for the info.

    I guess I got lucky because I had immediate success with mine. Grows super quickly. I have noticed that it requires regular watering which is unexpected for succulents. At least mine does; it’s a baby though.

    Thank you for the tips! I agree that’s definitely easier when they are outside. My challenge is here is Michigan is long winter. My plant room is about 20% humidity and it’s warm under lights. So my string of pearls would have dried strings. Whenever I touch soil it was super dry. I did partially close heat vents and introduced humidifier which got humidity in my plant room to 30%. Bit still the plant is more on a dry side.

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  6 лет назад +2

      You're very welcome! That would be a challenge for those long winters. My SOP gets a few dried stems from time to time here in the desert but in the summer it's blazing hot & hard to avoid. I just water it more often. Nell

    I just brought home a string of pearls and fuschia from california while i was visiting. I placed them next to eachother and thanks to this video now i know better and separated them.
    I live in el paso, texas and the fuschia needs misting daily to fight the dryness. Thank you for saving my string of pearls from my ignorance and possible murder. Haha

    Thanks for the great advice! I recently purchased a string of pearls in a 6in nursery pot that is kind of shallow. It's about 4 in deep. I'm having trouble finding shallow terracotta pots around. What size of pot would you suggest for my plant and does it need to be particularly shallow? Also, would cactus mix mixed with perlite be okay for soil? Thanks!

    I got mine a week ago.The middle of the plant started rotting out. I have a moisture meter so I didn't over water it. But it was definitely planted to deep in the middle. So ill have to re pot the sides to save it I recon. now at lest I can maybe save it.

    Oh man, yes, I'm obsessed with these. I think because they're amazing and they're a challenge. But you just confirmed part of what I realized and that is an open chunky mix, more free draining!
    If you know, or ever want to talk about how the nurseries get the SOPs so dense and thick on top, and everywhere else. Like the shots you showed are incredible, I'm dying to know what they do ;D Anyway, thanks for the info.

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  6 лет назад +1

      Oh yes, they're a pleasant obsession! I'd have more of them if I didn't have so many plants already. Oftentimes you buy them in a mix which is too heavy so it's good to transplant them. The growers get SOPs thick & dense by cutting them back. Then by the time they're ready to repot them into hanging baskets, they already have a sizable crown. Nell

    • @mysticshining
      @mysticshining 6 лет назад

      Thanks for your answer Nell :) I'm definitely going to try that with one of my SOPs. I love experimenting with them. I've had the greatest success when I plant them with other plants in the same pot and treat them more like ground cover underneath the other plants in the pot. I figure that's a more natural way for them to grow? Anyway, thanks.

    Hi
    I have had good luck with my string of pearls but recently I’ve seen the pearls on them are getting smaller and smaller as they get longer I did re-pot from a plastic pot to a terra-cotta pot but no luck. The pearls on the strands keep growing shorter and smaller compared to the ones on the top of the pot. Any suggestions

  • @lacietucker97

    If it’s too cold in the house will that also affects my pearls? I just received a 2 inch pot of pearls about a week ago and they looked beautiful when I got them but now some of the pearls are looking mushy 😔

    Hello Joy so i boughta 6inch string of pearls and the crown was starting to get dry. So i changed the plastic pot to a terracota and haven't watered her because she was super wet when i go her :( shes surviving barely and have her in a northeast window shes not as beloptuous as yours in the video i am from the east coast, i have been using a humidifier for my succulents am i following the steps right... can you please give me some advice? i love your videos they are very informative thanks again...

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  6 лет назад +1

      Hi - That was my last point; sometimes the plants are too wet when you buy them & it's hard for them to dry out. NE window in the winter on the east coast may not be enough. I'm in Tucson where a NE window would be fine. They do so much better in bright, natural light. Water less often in lower light situations & in the winter. Nell

    Just saw that they are a ground cover type of plant. Saw a video showing the plant growing naturally in Spain. 😒 So living in the PNW, I rather doubt I am going to buy any from this family again. Not the right plant for my area, home, or me. I appreciate them, don't get me wrong. But I didn't research their natural habitat before I purchsed. But that's how gardening, indoors and out goes huh? Learning everyday by successes and boo boos. 🙂

    Hi. Great video!! I’m new at growing succulents. My string of buttons has two new tiny little brown circular spots on the leaves near and/or closest to the edges. It’s in a window ledge facing the east, but the buildings east of me block the sun for the most part until it’s mostly in the south. Probably gets about 2-3 hours of sun. I also have my horizontal blinds closed 70-80%. Can you help me figure out why these spots are forming? It’s in cactus/perlite in a well draining pot. Watered only when completely dry. Thanks 🙏
