Hey Carl, non-hyperactive ADD person with a fairly high dose of instant release Dexedrine here, any stimulant is going to be prone to cause/worsen hyperactivity when you start your treatment or up the dose, but after a few days it starts to settle back down. Everyone has a different therapeutic window for stimulants, in my experience every specialist i've worked with started whatever medication they wanted to try very low, and very gradually upped the dosage, with regular check-ins. While i suspect that someone with a bad case of hyperactivity is going to be quite the challenge to manage during this onboarding process, i'd assume that they too will develop a tolerance, where a correct dose of stimulants should at least not worsen the hyperactivity component.
As far as method of action, in my case, i don't feel it's a question of having internal stimulation (rwar); i liken my brain to how Hal acts in this classic scene from Malcom in the Middle: ruclips.net/video/AbSehcT19u0/видео.html. I usually don't end up wrenching on my car, but rather some minor annoyance at work can easily send me in a tailspin where i lose half a day coding a solution or machining a part to fix something because that annoyance is literally a shiny at the bottom of a pit that i can't ignore. I should mention that i'm in accounting, so while being able to code and machine can be useful in a pinch, i've lost a couple jobs because i've had issues staying in my lane.
Too high a dose of stimulants in my case will worsen this kind of behavior, but at my current level they basically help my critical sense and/or will power assert themselves better, so I can both recognize that i'm about to journey down another rabbit hole and pump the brakes before i commit time and efforts to something not actually worthwhile.
Tl;dr stimulants good if you need them, but they require some time to get used to and should be monitored regularly.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk everyone!

The reason stimulants have the effect they do on people with the hyperactive form of ADHD (in that it appears to "calm" the person down and make them more focused) is because the pre-frontal cortex part of the brain is underdeveloped in ADHD-hyperactive people. The pre-frontal cortex is what manages focus and task-sequencing, as well as guiding your motor control functions to do whatever it is you need to be doing. Stimulants improve the pre-frontal cortex's functioning so that you can better control your energy and direct your focus, thus causing you to feel calmer and more focused.
It really is a counter-intuitive result, but it's the truth.
That's why people who don't have ADHD shouldn't take stimulant ADHD meds because their pre-frontal cortex is already functioning at proper levels, and thus the stimulant effect ends up being too much and they become overly wired and amped up.

In my psychopharmacology course we learned stimulants basically activate the part of the brain (frontal lobe) that is responsible for planning, consequences, and saying stop and think before I do that. So that part of the brain being more active by the stimulant helps it control the rest of the brain that doesn’t think and just does stupid shit.

23:57 Nice thing about key-coin levels is that they don't necessarily need an elaborate dev exit to beat from CP - you just need to make the "last state" be starting with no red coins, since that's how the player starts from CP when uploading. You'll note in this level you pick up on red coin before the CP, so I suspect that's how this level works.
Doesn't solve the "clear from start" though, which probably *is* some elaborate dev exit.

Mechanisms of ADHD stimulants aren't all that clear, but another theory is that ADHD folk tend to have a lot of slow brain waves (delta), and because that is a "sleep" type of frequency, concentration is hard, attention is hard etc. Stimulants bring the frequency of that brain activity up to 8-12hz (alpha) which is more of an "alert" state. If you've got some friends in your local psych department, get an EEG before and 2-3hrs after medication and see if there are differences in particular areas, might be cool to see.

6:10 I’m not entirely sure because I’m not a doctor, just someone who takes ADHD medications, but I heard that the “hyperactivity” problems from ADHD are at least partially from a smaller amount of activity than normal in the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that sorta keeps the rest under control and thinks about what you should be doing. I think the stimulants work by activating that region so the brain can get itself more under control

When that client left I asked if they could put me with a client that wasn't insurance so that there would be stakes i would be comfortable with. They told me that if I just stuck with it for a month than they would switch me. After three months I talked to my supervisor explaining that working in insurance was extremely stressful and that I felt that I was loosing my mind so they told me to deal with it and every once in a while they tell me that they will look into it soon while telling me there planing on up training me to give me more responsibilities with the insurance client. So now I get to debate if its better to slowly loose my mind or be unemployed in an area where pre covid it was hard to find a job. atleast I know I'm not alone because most jobs don't care about there employees well being but are just interested in the most convenient way to make the most money.

For me, taking a walk adds more. You mean I need to get dressed? What's the weather like? What I wear depends on that, but it also depends on how far I'm going to walk, and that depends on where I'm going to walk to. By time I reach this point I'm like, ah forget it, I'm already spent.

Taking stimulants for add can also be because you have different parts of your brain working at different speeds. Taking a stimulant cranks the slower bits up to keep pace with the faster bits and keep them in check.
Essentially, it's like a sensory processing disorder. There's so much coming in but an add brain can't prioritize the important stimuli over the extraneous, hence easily distracted and easily hyperfocusing on stimulating input like TV or other flickering images because it stimulates dopamine and serotonin which helps your brain process but at the same time tune out all other stimuli do the intake processes aren't overloaded.

That's actually a better vulgarisation for how stimulants works for people with ADHD and how it helps them focus, instead of being scattered all over the place. Better than the previous one I've heard!
