You probably won’t see this but as a cult survivor, it means so much to hear you casually talk about this stuff on stream. People in cults actively avoid anything that might get them to question their beliefs; often the only way to get them to think is by stumbling on information from a source they viewed as “safe.” I think having more voices talking about cult thinking is super important, so thanks for talking about it!
I think, honestly, the thing that makes Mario Maker troll levels so cool is the fact that they're made *in Mario Maker*. It's like taking a brush, and three colors of paint, and finding every possible combination, and half the time finding chemical reactions to make new colors from what you already have, and creating a goddamn masterpiece.
I agree with this because, like Carl said, you could do *anything* with a romhack, but that has both pros and cons. In a Mario Maker level, you already know all the mechanics that are in the game, you have the same set of tools available when you're making a level as the creator had when making their level - when your expectations are subverted, it's surprising because you already have an educated guess on what SHOULD happen, but it was subverted anyway. With a romhack, ANYTHING can happen - if your expectations are subverted, and the explanation is just "I coded it to act differently", it doesn't have that same surprise value because you would never have been able to guess what would happen correctly anyway. Not to say that romhack trolls are inherently worse than Mario Maker trolls, because sometimes that extra freedom CAN be funnier, but having a consistent set of rules, knowing what those rules are, and then still being surprised by them is far more effective for me than being surprised by rules that could be made up on the spot.
Unlikely this will ever get seen. But in the VERY next video, I watched the creator said "fingering it out" rather than "figuring it out". The topic of eggcorns around 6 minutes in unlocked a memory of mine and i’m not sure if this counts but i’ll share anyway. So, background, my full, legal first name is Alexander. I go by Alex (as most people with that name do) and have for pretty much my entire life. When I was around 4 or 5, I watched Power Rangers Mystic Force, and in that show, one of the main characters (the green ranger, if i recall correctly) was named Xander… so, somehow, I got it in my dumb little child head that, because everyone called me Alex, but sometimes also called me Alexander, my full name _must be_ Alex Xander [middle name] [last name]. It just had to be. And to make matters worse, this was at the point in my life where I was convinced either I could never be wrong or if I said something with enough confidence and conviction, it would become true. So I had numerous arguments with my parents and teachers about the fact that I did or didn’t have two middle names. But, yeah, does that count or am I just a dumbass?

19:43 I remember hearing about how students from even the Ivy League and MIT have ended up in cults and it really changed my perspective on the people who get sucked up into them. Like, I want to believe that I'm smart enough to never end up in them, but if _they did_ then whose to say I won't?
cults are a truly scary thing because you won't be able to outsmart it's influence unless you realize your joining a cult because they reinforce two things that aren't true your alone without them and your lost without them to where some people who leave will rejoin because they were so far gone
I think appreciating the fact a person would tear down a fence because they are human like me and convinced themselves the fence was stupid and they were smart is not virtuous or admirable. It's pride and arrogance the likes that forces others to suffer for their decision to convince themselves that having to admit they make terrible choices is worse for humanity than just trusting that someone built the fence for a good reason.
I thought "hot lava" was actually "hot lover" when I was in kindergarten. I'll never forget my teacher's reaction when she heard me say "hot lover" jumping from chair to chair playing The Floor is Lava.
While this levle (and Carl's reactions that never fail to entertain) was fantastic; I think my favorite part was the very end where he admits he thought it was "nip it in the butt" right before the end theme starts singing "the more you know."
I was taught exclusively in French from Kindergarten to Grade 3, and in K whenever I heard my teacher say "outside" in French (à l'extérieur), I always thought she was saying my name (Alex).
I wish other IPs would get their own Maker game. Imagine if metroidvania style Maker game, things could be so much more in-depth, and troll levels could have an insane amount of polish assuming the right base mechanics could be in place; Metroid specifically would be good, as Samus has a fairly wide set of standard abilities that would be akin to Mario's various power-ups for level design. A Maker game for 2D Sonic would also be amazing, especially if it follows the original formula where speed isn't the main focus of level design, but slowing down and adventuring to find alternate routes and secrets is the core of the game; not to mention Sonic has a better roster for allowing branching paths and mechanics. This type of game has so much potential outside of Mario, and even within the Mario IP there's so much more that could be explored, it's sad that devs aren't all that willing to pursue this genre to its fullest.
A long time ago there was an online community-created multiplayer A Link to the Past-based game. I forget how it was all connected, but anyone could create their own bit and get others to enter it. You could also add code (some high-level game logic type code) to NPCs and other interactables.

the eggcorn thing is awful when learning a new language, so many words are very barely different from each other, so pronunciation is always a necessary thing to learn no matter how obvious it seems to you, you're probably wrong, but that's normal in the early stages. famous example in French is "beaucoup (many)" sounding like "beau cul (nice a*s)," but for me most embarrassingly came in the form "journée typique" (normal day) and "jeune atypique" (unusual youth)
A funny one as I was learning Chinese is the word for technical school 技術學院(jìshù xuéyuà) is often shortened to 技院 (jìyuàn). That shortened version is pronounced the same way as the word for brothel.

Eggcorn is similar to a mondegreen. But mondegreen comes from song lyrics, and as I typed this you read a comment in the twitch chat that said exactly the same thing! 😂, grape minds... grape minds...
20:00 I agree. Once I realized I was capable of that, I've spent my whole life seeking every single way I'm wrong as a way to avoid falling into this pitfall. That, and standing by the idea that any given thing I think is true is capable of being wrong, no matter the seeming evidence. What sucks is how often people seem to think I'm in the wrong for thinking this way. As if believing is somehow "better" than learning. Or people who actively dislike learning.

Scuk is my new favorite word now
"From the Gecko." Never change Carl you're amazing!
BRAVO and Big Thanks to make us Laugh so much ! I should definitely take example on You... your patience, your humour, your tenacity and self control... especially when an unpredictable troll appear 😅
Damn it Carl, it's 4 in the morning
why you gotta stop me from sleeping (as if I actually was) to enjoy more of your content?
If I had a poster of Bean Burrito, I’d put it up in my bathroom as motivation
19:43 I remember hearing about how students from even the Ivy League and MIT have ended up in cults and it really changed my perspective on the people who get sucked up into them. Like, I want to believe that I'm smart enough to never end up in them, but if _they did_ then whose to say I won't?
cults are a truly scary thing because you won't be able to outsmart it's influence unless you realize your joining a cult because they reinforce two things that aren't true your alone without them and your lost without them to where some people who leave will rejoin because they were so far gone
It's a famous addage of con artists that they prefer smart marks. "Dumb" people are often used to being tricked, so they're on guard for it.
It would make sense that college students end up in cults, they are used to paying people to be told what to do after all.
You have already joined a cult...

My cousin had one when he was young. He used to call the "Call A Bus" the Koala Bus.
Nip in the bud: correct.
Nip in the butt: incorrect.
Snip in the butt: incorrectER.
22:11 the slow descent from enjoyment, to utter madness.
I've never seen the stun from gorp get cancelled like that before.
HARD AGREE
A long time ago there was an online community-created multiplayer A Link to the Past-based game. I forget how it was all connected, but anyone could create their own bit and get others to enter it. You could also add code (some high-level game logic type code) to NPCs and other interactables.
To think DGR made some grand statement that “MM2 is dead”. MM2 isn’t any more dead than MM1 was when it came out 3 years ago.
I think I just had an egg corn from one of those egg corns.. "knowledge is power, Francis Bacon" and I thought of the artist that makes surreal body horror paintings
this is def best kind of trolls, whether it be a zipping setup that makes u giggle figuring out how youre gonna end up getting the shiny, psychologically torture you so youre in the wrong spot snd get booped by fireballs, getting booped a billion time in the same area; not sure if you call this multiple setups for 1 area or 1 setup for multiple trolls, eitherway its gold.
we also have carl torture trolls where you make him autopilot going into cp1 bc of slight difference in the process of going sl the way back to cp2, my favorite!
speaking of zipping setups, creators like AbOton make those setups just unbelievably silly with some glitching, beyond human reaction funny lil peeks, etc. cant forget his name for this kind of stuff, nor will i forget some iconic names in this community for some of the silliest things ever
the eggcorn thing is awful when learning a new language, so many words are very barely different from each other, so pronunciation is always a necessary thing to learn no matter how obvious it seems to you, you're probably wrong, but that's normal in the early stages.
famous example in French is "beaucoup (many)" sounding like "beau cul (nice a*s)," but for me most embarrassingly came in the form "journée typique" (normal day) and "jeune atypique" (unusual youth)
A funny one as I was learning Chinese is the word for technical school 技術學院(jìshù xuéyuà) is often shortened to 技院 (jìyuàn). That shortened version is pronounced the same way as the word for brothel.
Similar to that is how many words in English have the same letters and different pronunciation. Look for a poem called "The Chaos" by G Nolst Trenité
@@Bobbias yes tones are identical lol
I agree so hard with 19:45
how kind of Shadekitty and Carl to release a collaborative fiddle album for us
1:56 Carl laugh syncs perfectly with the death sound
4:44 for the fours. Also I HA’d so loud when he gets the hint.
All Carl streams are awesome. Every time.
Andrew here is a person just like us. Not too different from any of us humans. His gameplay is full of spaghetti. Reflect on this. Be humble. Your gameplay is spaghetti, just like his.
My Eggcorn moments were losing in Final Fantasy VII and the game over screen saying my party was Anal-lated. I did not know why my stepdad found this hilarious.
The other one for me was AC/DC's famous "Dirty Deed (and a Thunder Jeep)". I didn't know what a ThunderJeep was, but it sounded cool!
15:00 What the hell. This video is making me lose 7 seconds of my life everytime I want to see Carl die there.
It took me a sec to realize the editor had a bit a fun there looking at the clock.
I would probably buy a print of the main hub of seven trolly pieces lmao
13:13 No, it ‘hey’-ed _you._
ohhhhhh AHHHHHHHHHHH. the classic sounds of SMM2
I used to think "errand" was "Aaron". So, my mom would go "run an Aaron".
The launcher goes up that high because it's trying to get into the clown car, but fails to do so and so it falls back down
Eggcorn is similar to a mondegreen.
Saying “Just trust the science” is sort of like saying “just trust the government.” Ignorance is not an excuse to blindly follow things unquestioning, in fact, doing so spits in the face of science.
Carl liked this level so much he played it 6 times!
My favorite mispronunciation is my brother, who read "whom" to sound like the "wom" in "thwomp"
When shade Kitty is so powerful the trolls reach the physical cable on the switch
The age old classic egg corn that my mother always talks about is that I used to the the US capital was in “Washing a BC”
Juicebox instead of jukebox was an eggcorn I was always confused with
That would ACTUALLY be sick! Posters of troll levels!
It makes sense because people convince themselves that they're smarter/different than other people. THEY couldn't ever believe silly stuff.
16:00 Carlbox came, he seesawed, he perished.
R.I.P.
The 6:00 conversation. I always heard Shiny Pokemon as Chinese Pokemon. And for years I wondered why people were excited to trade Pokemon from another language.
Never change Carl... Hilarious.
It's been 5 months since I've binged me some Carl. I got some catching up to do!
I made the mistake of having a drink while watching this. I swear I almost spit it out a few times already and I’m not even halfway.
8:20Karl doesn’t realize piranha plant falls thru q block
