This is one of the greatest platformers on any console ever. And your playthrough is even greater...you make it look easy! I could never finish this game.

At the very least I have no idea why so many of these great, classic games aren't for sale on digital store fronts. They are leaving money on the table and denying a great many people the pleasure of playing these great games.
Love this game! Great soundtrack from Jun Chikuma. I'm terrible at it (always die in the jumping sections of 3B) but you make it look easy, as usual. My favorite boss is the big rock in Zone 2 that just rolls back and forth!
The end boss look like crazy fully bearded Homer Simpson. A formidable enemy. e: Which is even more fun as this game predates Homer and his appearance quite a bit. So Homer looks like Jagu and not the other way around.
This should have been the pack-in game for the Turbo. people would have been more impressed by the turbografx with Legendary axe instead of Keith courage
This is what a video game SHOULD be! A great console deserved great games like this. Just think about the SIZE and the COLORS of that final boss! He filled the entire screen! WOW! Imagine the Sega Genesis EVER doing that! And NEC managed this with an 8 bit CPU w 8kB RAM with two 16 bit graphics processors and 64kB graphics RAM. Just PERFECT. ❤

That was my immediate take away after seeing some brief game footage pop up in a random video about it's game system. So being a big fan of Castlevania and curious about this system only knowing very little of it growing up (like that Bonk game), had to check it out. Pretty cool looking game, never get enough of vintage 2d side scrolling Castlevania kinda games. The 3d ones are terrible and don't feel Castlevania like at all to me. Some games should only ever be 2d, that's one of them. Well unless maybe if they wanted to try it as a first person. Can you imagine going VR with that and using your whip to do those dramatic whip swings like in Super Castlevania IV? I could see easily getting dizzy from that, but could be a cool game experiment. A first person take on it could easily up the horror feeling of the game's world. I always thought it would be terrifying to be one of the Belmont's whipping your way thru their weird world of evil creatures. You'd really have the hairs on the back of your neck standing up just trying to survive. It'd be cool to see a live action horror movie try to achieve that, but so many would mess it up. I think at times the classic horror film Suspiria (1977) seems unintentionally like a live action Castlevania movie. (Never mind that it predates it by quite a bit.) From the mood/vibe, the visuals, the great film score from the band Goblin and the very eerie abstractness of it. It leaves an unsettling vibe with it's supernatural freakiness. Inferno (1980) and Phenomena (1985) also by director Dario Argento also feature more of his freakish supernatural horror mastery. His use color towards frightening and eerie effect is unmatched for me. Deep Red (1975), while not really supernatural is another of his best films. Too bad he couldn't have possibly made a Castlevania film back in the 70s or early 80s when he was at the height of his creative powers. I can't think of too many (perhaps Guillermo del Toro could do it justice) who have the visual eye that could bring to life the freaky horror world glimpsed on the box art of the original NES Castlevania game. In the perspective of the artwork, Dracula's face seems to be hanging omnipresently over the entire world Belmont is up against. Just what you wanna go up against a giant vampire face, trippy ; )
no wonder i never beat this game without save states. difficult stages followed by a maze and more boss battles. Had fun playing first 4-5 stages though 🤣
So, the speed item is the same as in Astyanax, which game was released first? EDIT: Ok no, one game is surely a rip off the other: item totems, wooden golem attack mode, the axe guys that have the exact same pattern as the skeletons...
Ah, the 1980's: back when video games had big testosterone, modest budgets, and barely-there costumes. Nowadays, we mostly get big budgets, modest costumes, and barely-there testosterone.
Zone 5 is way too long. And the vast majority of it are copypasted blue corridors playing dracula castle's brown note on loop instead of the awesome prog rock melody that accompanied the beginning of the stage. I can picture myself losing my mind and quitting the game during that segment.
wow such a heavy "Castlevania" inspired game, almost at the point of complete ripoff. The music at serveral levels are too familliar aswell, especially @ 15:04 at the 5 th level, man... no innovation, almost fell asleep, music is so bad.

Especially when he kicks you with his foot of doom. Game loses points for making the attack unavoidable.

Yeah I agree Zone 5 was extremely long and annoying. It took a few tries before I beat Zone 5.
I have many frustrating memories with this game. It was a very lackluster title. Felt like a ripoff of Caveman Ninja.
