Not to sound like a total hippie, but how can people watch what seems to be a genuinely super-friendly guy in a really good mood talking about a rig full of rare, oddball gear, and jump straight to posting negative, hateful comments about it? Catch the positive vibe when it's given to you, people :) Enjoy it and pass it on. That's the fun part of being, you know, a person. Loved watching this rundown, this Ian dude seems like the kinda guy you'd want on tour with you!
+John NT I am a hippie, an am not hateful to the guy at all. I am just asking if they will go over each thing, so us guitar players can learn more about this gear. Most guitarists do not have this much gear, and this could be a great opportunity to learn about a lot of things at once. Instead he just whips through it.. So, I am asking if Josh, himself, can go over each thing, because he probably understands the gear better than this guy.
I sorta feel for Josh. He spent ten years basically in John's shadow and few people ever took him seriously as a player in his own right despite him being in one of the biggest hard rock bands of all time. I hope whatever he does from now on takes off massively.
Yeah I really feel for a guy who made millions and became world famous less for his ability on the guitar and more for the fact that he was good friends with the band for years prior to him joining. I’m so distraught for the suffering he has had to endure. 🙄
people need to be thankful for josh for 2 reasons, 1) he embodies everything the chili peppers stand for and 2) he saved one of the best bands of all time from not existing anymore
The best rig rundown by far, not like all the others just a rack full of custom shop versions of signature models but some genuinely cool old equipment.
***** I agree with going back to the days before signature gear, but I don't necessarily think that people not using AC30's or Plexis is attributed to the signature gear craze. Not to say those aren't great amps, but unless you're only living in the British amp flavors, there are some really good amps out nowadays. Bogner has some great amps, Mesa has great stuff, Hughes and Kettner has some great stuff. Even the Peavey 6505 which was the Eddie Van Halen 5150 signature amp has become much more than what it was intended and Peavey continued building those amps after EVH left Peavey. Marshall and Peavey have some of the best amps ever built, but there's other companies doing different things that I like, too.
Very few artists actually use signature gear as such, they mostly use custom shop or ghost built stuff. Signature amps just seem really dumb to me though.
We always try to get the artists themselves to talk and demo their rigs, but their schedules are often hectic and filled with other obligations so we opt to do the RRs with the techs since they're always available and willing to talk gear with anyone that will listen. Trust us, our goal is to get every guitarist/bassist to talk about/play through their rigs, but if that's not option for any assortment of reasons, we prefer to do it with the tech than not at all. Thanks for understanding,
+LuckyLegionN7 yep. Don't know if I'll call him a student, cause Josh was already pretty bad ass. Just not known. You don't get to be John's "student" without already being a hell of a player. Although, I would love to see a frusciante beginner class. That would be interesting. Wouldn't last long. I don't think he's well known for having the best patience.
Was never a student of Johns, They collaborated on a number of albums together. Johns name is on most of them but has been stated in interviews they write together. Both are separate entities on their own.
The notion that Josh Klinghoffer or Edge is a crappy player because they have a ton of pedals is further proof that an IQ test should be required to comment on these videos...While Edge would fail miserably at Little Wing, likewise no one can duplicate Edge's sound. As far as Josh goes, he is a world class all around studio musician who can play many instruments...I would be willing to bet that he can play anything that 99% of the guitar players reading this can play...
This guitar tech guy is the best one I've seen interviewed. Just a super-friendly, nice, straight-forward and honest man. Josh is a really one lucky guitar player to have a tech like him. Would like to follow him more 👏👏🙌🙌.
I love watching these. Even bands I don't like at all. Just to see the gear. Especially big bands like this, because they can afford anything they want.
+John T. Campbell What makes it better is that it's all gear anyone could get from shopping around, no signature models or crazy pedals, save for the custom bypass and telemaster
People are complaining about the size of his rig but really the only time he uses a tonne of effects at the same time is during the jam sessions, Josh normally uses around the same amount effects on a song as John did. A lot of effects doesn't mean a guitarist is bad either, it'd be boring if everyone just used a Distortion, Delay and a Boost.
It's nice to hear a Northern English accent on a rig rundown video! Ian Sheppard clearly has a grasp on one of the most complex pedal/amp systems described to date, and it's great to see just how he solves the many problems that the RHCP set list creates!
I saw this guy when they were at key Arena, he storms out like a ninja mid song, swaps Josh's Wah and before you knew it, he was gone, and Josh was funkin it up.
Hey Dereksiusiu, We would love to, but John would have to go on tour first -- maybe after his new albums drop later this year he'll go on the road. Thanks for the watching,
Maximilian, the Bright Onions are not really loop switchers as we're used to. The flick switches are the on/offs for each loop. Those are left on all the time, so every loop is engaged. The pedals are then used just like a regular daisy chain. The looper is only for removing a faulty pedal from the daisy chain without having to pull cords out of pedals. In other words, Josh runs a daisy chain of pedals, and the Bright Onions are just for quick troubleshooting.
Would be very cool for an update on the new tour. Lots of new sounds on the new album, but also, didn't Josh's board get consolidated so he could reach it from a chair?
I met Josh, but at a Dot Hacker show in Hollywood. If you don't know, that's his side band. He's one of the nicest, most grateful people I've ever met. He signed my copy of I'm With You, gave me a few picks, and took a picture with me. He even put a personalized message with his signing. (When I saw him behind the venue before the show I asked him if he knew where we could park. He put in the message "Hope you found a parking spot!")
an updated rundown for josh would be great ive seen him with a lot of new guitars and amps that werent in this video and im sure hes got a billion new pedals
No signal loss because all of those boss pedals maybe? I wish we could get one of these each tour they do. I love this guy! He talks fast, lots of info, but I'm not totally annoyed by anything. It's great!
Those guitar amplifiers that he plays through are incredible! When you see old amplifiers that are still in good working condition, it shows how well certain brand names really are. That old red Marshall cabinet and head would look incredible in my house! :)
His tech is the nicest coolest tech I've ever seen.Every time I watch one of these I should not watch the part showing guitars because I start thinking of the ones I've sold that I totally regret.Like he shows a 64 Jaguar and I think of the 63 one I sold in 2000 and have been looking for it since 2001 to get it back.Great video.
I honestly like pedals. I don't have many, but just the ones I like--Boss Metal Zone (actually sounds good when modded and played through a TUBE AMPLIFIER), boss sd-1, and EHX big muff pi; Dunlop classic cry baby wah; boss ch-1, EHX small clone; boss looper
still one of my fave vids on youtube... love how there are so many classic pedals.. not too boutique .. seems achievable but at the same time not at all
I want to talk with Ian Sheppard. That dude sounds like an absolute champ of a human being. This rig rundown is probably my favorite just because of how much fun Ian seems like he is.
I wanted to congratulate the cameraman for also zooming on all the settings on amps and pedals. Not that I'm a superfan of RHCP but thish is the way it should be done for every band.
i've seen josh in smaller venues and with the peppers. he has an incredible vibe and rhythm... don't compare apples to apples... Josh is also a master drummer which makes his groove in... he can do it all... love this guy!
In some ways Josh doesn't have a choice regarding the complexity of his board. Ever seen Frusciante's RHCP rig? It's at least this obtuse, with a ton of huge analog MOOG pedals to boot. Also it seems ridiculously unfair to peg someone as a shitty guitarist just because they use a lot of pedals. I'm not a fan of Josh's or the Edge, but it's not because they use too many pedals. I just don't think what they produce with them is all that interesting.
It's not like he engages all of them at once. the subtlety is still there fairly often. The reason for so many is 1) convenience of having multiple of the same pedal setup for different sounds to avoid knob turning on stage, and 2) slightly different flavors of the same effect from two different pedals. Fuzz, Distortion, and Overdrive are all essentially the same concept, yet totally different when heard in comparison. I have a lot of effects that I use, not constantly, but they're there when
I don't hear all these pedals in their music, just funky stuff, I haven't listened to them since I was a kid "catholic school girls rule", but he seems to have great taste and keeps it old school, so hats off
I saw them in May and I personally thought he and Flea were the best part of the show. It's hard to adjust from John to him in terms of things he will do during jams, but it's still very good in my opinion.
Man this rig really seems a bit too much, not because it has way to many effects, on contrair the more the better by me, but because of the pedals, maybe during hiatus he should experiment with Axe Fx or any other type digital effects consoles so that he can start cutting down on the massiveness of this rig. Still pretty psychedelic and awesome by me.
I mean its pretty obvious why he doesn't want to use something like Fractals system or something like that, he wants to be able to fool and mess around with every singly pedal individually every single time he plays and changes things literally as hes playing him which is something he can't physically do when playing a show lol with this plethora of pedals you have the option of messing with everything while you're playing the songs and making each song sound just a bit different as he wants every single time he plays it!
Yea, but that's also is the worse idea ever, not knowing how your tone will work out every night sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I see why he'd do it, but once more, I really have to say I prefer a little bit more of control and slight tonal shift than radical leaps every single second, catch my drift?
LoveStarOcean i get what you mean, but when you have all those pedals and use them almost every day, you know which pedals do what and which pedals to use at what times so it probably isnt to confusing for him. i think it would be pretty confusing to have all those pedals out at once, and id make my rig much smaller and more organized, but its all personal preference and how youre playing
Not really, they do inhibit the ability to experiment on stage which I assume that's why he choses physical pedals. Rackmount effects are great if you know how to tinker with them, just like any other pedal.
They should have this guy as the support act just talking about the gear.
Not to sound like a total hippie, but how can people watch what seems to be a genuinely super-friendly guy in a really good mood talking about a rig full of rare, oddball gear, and jump straight to posting negative, hateful comments about it? enough for him to keep himself stocked with tea
Nobody in the world needs that amount of pedals. Would love to go for a pint with that guy, what a stellar chap!
Should've seen John's set up.
You are so stereotypically English 😂😂
John or the "caretaker" lol?
Olly Durham Ballux I say to all those pedals, what.
"Sometimes a cup of tea is all you can really rely on." Truer words never spoken.
We need a new Rig Rundown for this Album
Its funny how everybody talks bad about josh but he's got almost the most views in any PG rundown video
Rolling through the comments waiting for someone to say this lol

Awesome interview. That guy really loves his work -- I can respect that.
Top guy... the type of personality that’s good to have around.... why would anybody give this the thumbs down??.
John's rig had nearly as many pedals on the SA tour...Josh has also brought us all the chance to see RHCP live again, and he's a genius.

Well done Chris and Josh for making it so interesting really good questions from Chris Keep up the good work PG
Great interview. Ian Sheppard is a super engaging guy. He seems to genuinely love what he does. Wow, what a crazy set of pedals!!
Frusciante loved electronics as well, one of the reasons he left was to work more with electronics.
