She and her family created this drama to hide she was caught committing a serious felony in the USA. This to a climax when her Indian maid, illegally brought to the USA, complained that she was not receiving minimum wage in the USA! When given a chance to clear up the mess, she lied to federal officials. In the USA that is Fraud, punishable by 10 years in prison. The USA wanted India's support from China at that moment critical. Otherwise, she would have spent time in jail. Instead, the USA just gave the maid asylum in the USA and she was put on an airplane back to India the following week. Rs 30,000 (USD 560) was credited to her bank account in India for her family and the rest was given to her in US in the form of housing/rent/taxes/food/clothing. If you believe USD 1000 is too high for one bedroom/whole month of food and clothing etc in the downtown area then I think your are a hill billy living in some mountain range and not in the city where the cost of living is quite high.
This maid was a blackmailer who tried to get her whole family into US by blackmailing her employer who promptly refused. And this whole fiasco was orchestrated. Did you know ur embassy in India used american tax payers money to buy tickets for the maids family and transport them to US during the course of this case claiming they were threatened in India. The maid just made a deal period. Good riddance, you guys can keep the Indian maid family lol after all ur talk of illegal immigration non sense.

For everyone confused the main issue is that strip search is usually conducted for serious felonies. This error or lie in documentation is far from a felony. Yes it is technically by the books, but it is far from the norm. That's like an officer locking you up over a traffic ticket. The complaints from the indian side are also valid because such actions were against the norm especially when committed against a diplomat, and official representative. To the issue of immunity, there was no diplomatic immunity, but consular immunity which makes the diplomat immune to any work related crimes/actions.

shivam raj listen, all foreign diplomats have FULL IMMUNITY when it comes to VISA/RESIDENCY issues. Eg: if Khobragade killed someone, she will (and she should) go to jail. The crimes she committed were 1. lying about maid's payment in VISA documents (a federal crime) 2. not paying the maid even minimal wage (2nd federal crime) 3. physically abusing the made (state crime)...and the list further goes on because now, she has been caught lying about the procedure (that she was apparently arrested in front of daughter, she was put in same cell as drug abusers, and that she was strip searched in front of men) - All LIES! Truth is she got caught breaking the law, but police knew she was a diplomat and gave her special privileges for jail cell, phone calls, and food (THEY DID NOT HAVE TO DO THAT). She has been lying to indian media and trash talking US government to divert people's attention from her own mistakes! C'mon people! Wise up!

The difference between, doing things by the book and doing things out of common sense is the fundamental cultural difference between the West and the East. Eastern countries and cultures given importance to Inter personal relationships. Western countries follow the book to the letter. So in the US system there is no room for common sense/emotions. East and West are fundamentally different in this respect. The result is the chaos we saw in this video.

What is wrong with Indian government's action is that they did it when Devyani has been arrested. It should never have existed.
Roadblocks should not have been removed. Indian embassy in US doesn't have much threat. India is not obliged to provide roadblocks but the U.S. embassy is entitled to full security.

Only in America are police and prosecutors so ignorant of the law. Diplomatic immunity dates back over 2000 years !!! Diplomatic immunity
Diplomatic immunity is a form of legal immunity that ensures diplomats are given safe passage and are considered not susceptible to lawsuit or prosecution under the host country's laws, but they can still be expelled. Modern diplomatic immunity was codified as international law in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations which has been ratified by all but a handful of nations, though the concept and custom of such immunity have a much longer history dating back thousands of years.

Firstly let me just say that I am an Indian now living in the UK. Whilst I agree that the diplomat should not have been strip searched. Let us not forget that she was arrested for paying her nanny (probably from India) just $3 an hour. I know only too well how Indians with money or in a position of power behave towards people they see as lower than them and quite frankly it is disgusting. If that's why she was arrested then good on them and if she felt humiliated then tough! No sympathy.

@@henrymanzano2201 that's not exploitation, the diplomat gets an emolument of around 4000$ USD how can she afford to pay her domestic help more than her own earnings plus free food and lodging. The only reason why many diplomats bring to their place of posting domestic worker from their home country is because it's impossible to afford local domestic workers in the US. They must've had an agreement prior to bringing the domestic help to the US.

    • @PK-db9qj
      @PK-db9qj Год назад +1

@@roses2028 100% true. They bring domestic worker from their own country so that they can be paid fairly with free food and accommodation , because it is impossible to have one in the US as the salary of helper/worker is more than diplomat itself.
Also all this happens after agreement only , later US government also said that they found agreement between her and her helper for the same, and then released her.

If she really was paying only 3$ an hour, charge her for that offense. Many maids working in India take lower pay in exchange for living space and food and sometimes payment to a mutual fund or a family member instead.
I still don't see the need for a strip search. Honestly, India did the bare minimum in response. India and US and culturally different. A strip search is humiliating for the person concerned in any country, but the public also takes offense to it in India.

It may have been a 'routine' 'by the book' thing, but it's still disgusting and bordering torture. That being said, diplomats are NOT above the law. They have certain protections, but they still have to abide by the law. What's more, their immunity is function related. This whole nanny thing had nothing to do with her function as a diplomat. So it is at least debatable if her immunity extends this far. Of course there is a practical side to consider as well, if the US sets this precedent then other countries might use it to start harassing US diplomats.

The minimum wage in India is 23 cents an hour and you can get a middle class apartment for 80 dollars a month. 3 dollars an hour is very high pay in India. And by this law, the UK diplomats can pay their workers 3 pounds to match 7.5 dollars an hour, well below poverty in the UK. Not to mention, the US has no place to tell India, since the US is number one in human trafficking and no one was prosecuted or many times even jailed for beating adopted Russian orphans to death. India has a better human rights record than the US. With a larger population, India has a far lower rate of missing children with 60,000 compared to 800,000 in the US. And violence or abuse of women in India is far lower than Germany, Australia, US and many other western countries as compiled by the UN.

    • @corderobranch

Are you serious? Do you really live on planet earth? What real right do women have in their motherland? And you talk about violence and abuse of women in India is far lower than the United States and other countries? Have you been watching the news? What happens to the women that are raped in India? How are they treated and reacted to when such things as "rape" happens to them? What justice do they get? The justice of being shunned by their society? By being blamed for the rape, that it was their fault? Among other things? Is that what you call justice? Meanwhile, a diplomat gets treated like anyone else and India goes into a tantrum? What are we babies? Lets not forget of the marriages to "babies", and so on, is condoned, which is horrible... I agree that there are crimes committed all around the world, including here in the US, but are you truly that ignorant about India, or any other country for that matter? I am an Indian. I can tell that she most likely paid that maid $3 or less per hour. I have seen numerous Indians doing this in foreign nations because its cheaper to bring Indians and make them work like a slave than pay for a local nanny. This is pathetic and she deserves to be arrested if she had done so. Who gives a shit which country she is from? If she's a criminal, she deserves prison.
