I am a child of a diplomat and spent most of my childhood overseas living that life. I found this series, The Diplomat, to capture much of the spirit of the job. American values are front and center in your life and how you portray yourself to others. Also, there can be quite a lot of drama, quite a lot of real danger, and I appreciated that the show brought some of that into their plot line. For my experience, I lived in Berlin during the Cold War, and in Afghanistan when things fell apart in the late 70's. I am glad to see actual diplomats validating my memories of this life here.
As a South African child who also spent my adolescence living with my parents who were South African diplomats i really appreciate your comment and take on the show :)
I loved this entire first season on Netflix. It's funny you guys took the time to record this video, finishing it up with a career plug. I wish I was young and educated enough to pursue a public service career. Thank you for your service Kristin Kane!
Hi. I also work for the Department of State. I think Ms. Kane was being - wait for it! - diplomatic, by choosing to focus on the aspects of the show that the creators got right. There's plenty they did not. Trust me.
As a former diplomat of a third world country with a decade of experience, I can without a doubt say that foreign service is an extraordinary career that you will never forget. Looking back I am still amazed at the things that I did for my country and the shit I put up with while putting on that perfect composure as diplomats are representing the country. I left the service with no regret because of a coup but I do miss the pride I felt representing my country. Every diplomat has behind the curtain special story. Definitely gonna watch that show😊
War happens aal beacuse of such mindset like yours : my country , your country. And for the time being it remains, war will never stop, it will happen here or there.
As a French person, the ending career message is very interesting and feels very American (in a good way). I don't think I've ever seen a career plug in a similar French video. I think there's this idea that we like to keep what's elitist and prestigious that way, while I feel like American will try (or make us think they do) to demystify it.
I wish ambassadors could travel three weeks in that country before taking the job. I've learned so much about how people live, think and behave by traveling and interacting with citizens in ordinary ways.
I can't believe I'm falling in love with social media content from the state dept. I just hit the subscribe button. This is a phenomenal piece of content. More pls!
Is there an age limit? Asking for a friend who is in her early 60s.😄 Edit: I guess the answer is "No" because they never answered. My friend is extremely disappointed.😀
I have such respect for Foreign Service, but found the show un-watchable. I was hoping for The West Wing abroad, but really disliked the manufactured drama from the elected officials (I'm sure they're annoying, but the immaturity was over the top "I want to blow something up!" so dumb) and the sexual tension from otherwise very serious characters in high roles.
Whoever thought of this video at the State Dept deserves a raise. Genius
Damn I didn't notice it was from the state department
Looks like the Brits did a video first according to my next video suggestion. See "British Foreign Secretary reacts to The Diplomat".
Fantastic video, Kristen!
i think the british department did the same thing first
@@babasolaosikoya5947 I also didn't notice until the plug at the very end
Didn't realize this was an ad by the state department until the end. 10/10
when you realized this video was made by a government, not by a fashion magazine company..

May I know, what do you do now ??
As a child, were you intersted to pursue the same career, like your parents.
What career did you choose?

I was surprised at the end of the video! Didnt realise this was for the dept of state. REALLY REALLY GOOD.

I love the Diplomat. It's so cool to know that it was grounded in a lot of truths about the real job.

I find it hard to believe that diplomats have time to write youtube comments

This video actually made want to pivot my career. Never thought being a diplomat was remotely attractive. Well done 👏

Wow this video is so effective didn't notice it was from the State Department and yes I just checked how to be a junior diplomat hahaha
The show was amazing. This video is amazing. Please keep posing more Diplomat esc content to stave of my show withdrawal!

This is a well made video. It's not in your face. Is professionally done and indistinguishable from those done by other known channels.
I am glad my random RUclips algorithm brought me here. Long time no see! Nice to see you, Kristin!
Love the show; super fun! and LOVE that the state department actually put out this reaction vid!
Love this show. Can't wait for the next season. As a child of a career diplomat myself I can totally relate.
So cool that the show was mostly right. I’m betting it’ll actually push more people into that field.
I wish this video was longer, it was great!
What a brilliant video - well done to everyone involved.
The fact this is posted on the literal State Department 😂 A+
Department of foreign affairs
Department of external affairs
u.s.a - let's confuse everybody
This was a really great video. Thank you for making this
This is SO GREAT!! I wondered, when I saw the trailer, what this critique would sound like! #LoveThis
I kind of forgot about this show. I actually hope we get a season 2, but with the strike I don't know.
It will get it. It was announced shortly after the debut.
I thought the editing was different turns out different channel than usual Haha great recruitment vid 👍
This video is much needed.
omg did not realize it was a State Dep video until the end lol
ok totally did not expect the job ad at the end of the vid, lol
I thought this video was from a Wired interview, surprised to find its from state dept. straight from the horse's mouth 😁
Excellent vlog
I thought this was a Cosmo video lol… State is taking the cobwebs off!! 🙌🏽💚✨
the fact that the us state dpt made this and uploaded it to YT is WILD
This video was very much appreciated!
Very interesting, thank you.
Thank you that was very helpful
Great video!
Haha what a solid assessment there Maam🤝👏
This video is amazing
A GREAT series!
Nice shot, real diplomats!
DCMs run the embassy, especially when the Ambassador is an appointee.
Nicely done!
Well that explains why the Ukrainian consulate in Canberra is a smallish office
So much grace in an American? Can't believe it!

A diplomat with serious vocal fry. Impressive.
Question?
Has anyone done a comparison and contrast with other nations?
It was a hiring video? Wow !
As a daughter of a career FSO I couldn't get beyond 3/4 of episode 1. Overacted and not credible.
I agree, just over the top and silly.
@susanapezzullo6361 I agree with your assessment of that show.
The video fell short. I wanted to know more!
love this!
It’s an FX show, it was not made by Netflix
What happened when a real diplomat reviews Diplomat that reviews netflix's The diplomat
❤❤❤
I thought it was insider, but I never thought this was from the Department of state lol/
I thought this was a buzzfeed video

what about portrayal of the CIA? :)
The show is cringey.
wow
