- On September 27, 1973 Texas International Airlines Flight 655 crashed into the north slope of Black Fork Mountain, Arkansas. The aircraft was a 1948 Convair CV-600 (N94230) equipped with two Rolls-Royce Dart 542-4 turbo-prop engines. The flight entailed a round trip flight from Dallas, Texas to Memphis, Tennessee with stops at Texarkana, El Dorado, and Pine Bluff. On the night-time trip from El Dorado to Texarkana, the crew deviated 100 miles from the flight path to bypass a storm front. The flight was conducted under visual flight rules in instrument meteorological conditions, meaning the crew attempted to navigate by visual geographical cues at night. The aircraft flew at approximately 2000 ft in order to stay below storm clouds and to navigate via city lights. The pilot believed "The highest point out here is about 1,200 ft, and we're not even where that is, I don't believe." In truth, they were over the Ouachita Mountains where the highest point is approximately 2,680 ft. The aircraft crashed into Black Fork Mountain at 216 mph 600 ft below the peak. All 11 people on board were killed. It took three days for search teams to find the crash site, and 3 National Guard members were killed in a helicopter crash in the process. The crash site was never cleaned up due to its geographical inaccessibility. Access to this site requires an 8 mile round trip hike up the side of the mountain.

yeah, three other people died in connection with this event. They did not have crash location trackers (technology) standard at the time (1973) so it took three whole days to locate the crash site. Unfortunately, a three-man helicopter crew out of the Arkansas National Guard crashed en-route to search the crash location of flight 655, so in total tragically, 14 people lost their lives in connection with this event, eleven people perished on the Texas International flight and three American servicemen perished trying to locate the crash site. God bless those people may the rest in peace. Please don't forget our Army National Guard servicemen who also lost their lives. Truly touching video bro much love. BTW I know you mentioned the three NG guys in the decription I just wanted to add my two cents.

I still hear about this accident from time to time as the extended family of one of the dead live all over this area. Actually the passenger that died lived about 15 miles away from here. I should check. I bet there is a memorial near by.

Very nice video and very good music, dont know if this was a altimeter accident but it looks like one.
They were just lost and didn't think they were were flying in an area with mountains. Flight recorders show the pilot says "Fred, descend to two thousand feet" prior to impact. The crash occurred around 2025ft

As they said in the description - inaccessibility to the site. They would have only taken the bodies, personal belongings and items needed for the investigation (ie black boxes, instruments) and left the rest.

That is still strange. The official accident report AAR74-04 from the NTSB clearly states "The wreckage area was 120 feet wide and 175 feet long. All pieces of the aircraft were recovered from this area." And yet there it is...
Hendrik Busch That means that every piece of the aircraft landed inside that 120x175ft wreckage area, not that they recovered every piece of the aircraft.
Weird that they didn't bother to clean it up completely. Pretty massive chunks of plane still there.
Get it why they couldn't do so back in the days. But current day it should be doable with the help of helicopters and cargo-nets
Osmosis think of it this way. It's a giant headstone that marks their final resting place, atop a beutiful mountain with lovely scenery.
There is really no reason to collect the rest. The scrap value is not good enough to warrant such an operation, there is nothing more we can learn from the debris, and it is not causing any trouble being out there.

Since the inauguration of The Leader, there have been no commercial airline crashes.
Surprised no one has tried to harvest the crash for anything...maybe some have but there's a lot left. I could see some smart hobos harvesting it for scrap metal to build a shelter up there.
It is kind of out in the middle of no place. There are no roads or anything like that up that way.
