  • Extending your vehicle’s oil drain interval is not as important as protecting your engine’s parts throughout the entire interval.
Watch Shanna Simmons explain why extending your vehicle’s oil drain interval isn’t necessarily a good thing.

I'll look at the color too. If black, I change. Pennzoil has so much detergency, you may have to change early. I switched from Super Tech Synthetic to Pennzoil Ultra, and the oil got darker way faster than with the Super Tech Synthetic. I'll change at a greater interval later as engine gets cleaner, but for now, I don't want to overclog the filter. It just means it is doing it's job better. The cheapest place to get it is Walmart.com for just under $25 for 5 quarts. I chose this oil after seeing RUclips videos in which the oil is tested on 'Project Farm'.

Gents, she's not just a pretty face. Shanna Simmons earned a BSME (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering) from Texas A&M in 2011. It's a good school, and she's certainly earned her cred.

Love Pennzoil Ultra, slightly longer drain interval. Keeps the engine immaculate.

FINALLY a SENSIBLE vid on oil change intervals. I'm tired of hearing too many know-it-alls on RUclips telling us DIYers to stop changing our oil. They claim that oil companies like Pennzoil don't want you to extend oci cuz it'll decrease their sales volume...HUH!!! I'm sorry but I just cannot see going a year on ANY type of oil and filter...SORRY Royal Purple...I'm not buying your product or your philosophy. My next oil and filter change for my '96 Toyota Camry LE will be with Pennzoil High Mileage 10w-30 and a Performax PO-38 oil filter. Got a case of 12 filters from Keller-Heartt for about 26 bucks with FREE shipping over a year ago. The filters R identical to pennzoil PZ-38.

Whats the difference between 5w-30 ultra platinum vs 5w-30 platinum high mileage?
Why Is the ultra platinum is $2 more expensive than the high mileage one?
I have a 200k miles on my car i dont know which one to choose!

    • @petersammon8771

Get the HIGH MILEAGE one as it has seal conditioners that swell the seals and keep them from leaking or your car from smoking.

If you do alot of extended highway driving you can 7,500-10,000 miles on oil changes. If you do mostly in town driving, taking alot short trips, mostly in traffic or prolong idling which are consider servere conditions, oil should be change 5,000 miles or 5 months whichever comes first.

You only extend if you can't change it yet. Otherwise, change it sooner.

That intro just blew my speakers. Video editing tip #1: Normalize your audio or adjust the levels so you don't scare the heck out of people. They don't make a Penzoil to replace speakers...yet!

The simple answer is to change your HIGH-QUALITY oil when it starts getting dark brown and before it gets black. Just check your warm oil on a white paper towel and change it before it gets black.
Oil stands up these days, so after a year or even 10,000 miles, the oil itself may still test good, but high concentrations of carbon (microscopic sandpaper from blowby) will cause damage. A very tight engine driven gently, may still have golden oil after 5000 miles so why change it? If you drive harder, the oil might be dark brown at 3000 miles, so change it.
A blind time or mileage change is unnecessary and ineffective.
Why are you changing clean oil or why did you wait to change black oil? Why not change brown oil? See what I mean?
Also, no need for all this flushing hype, as modern oils have detergents that keep your engine clean and your engine seals are not designed to be exposed to solvents of any kind.
If you seldom drive a car, then moisture acidifying in your oil will become a problem. This is solved by driving it for 30 minutes once a month, to burn this moisture off. Idling in the driveway is better than nothing (unregistered car), but the car really needs to be driven.
