Hi Catherine. I started doing cabbage rolls this way years ago when I cooked for an assisted living facility. They had cabbage rolls on the menu, but it was to hard for people to cut and eat. They kept sending uneaten plates back to the kitchen. When I did it this way, they all loved it. It was much easier for them to eat, and did not take nearly as long for the kitchen crew, which was just me lol, to get in the oven. It was a win win. I love doing it this way in the instant pot.
May I ask how you do it in the instant pot, as in how long do you cook it and do you just put everything in it at once? I’m intrigued. I love my instant pot.
I brown the meat, usually on the stove because I get burn messages if I sear meat in the pot. I shed the lettuce and then just add everything in the pot. Make sure you have enough tomato sauce and water to cook the rice. I pressure cook on high for about 30 minutes and let it slow release. If it is not quite done you can always give it more time. So much easier than filling and rolling cabbage leaves. @@bookworm5708
I'm from WV and we are going into some hotter weather for about the next week. When the cooler weather sets in I'm going to surprise my daughter-in-law with this for dinner. I have a cabbage roll recipe given to me about 40 years ago from an elderly Polish woman. The recipe calls for grape jelly. I may go with that. Great idea!
Interesting, I am from WV, my Mom put golden raisens in her cabbage rolls. They were delicious. She developed Dementia and swore she never made cabbage rolls.

This was delicious. We are having it again tonight. We do not eat a lot of cabbage and buying a whole head would go to waste for just the two of us. I used a bag of slaw mix instead. It was the perfect amount. Cooked quickly and the slivers of carrots in it gave the dish a nice crunch. Outside of that I followed the recipe exactly. Love your channel.
Cabbage rolls are my specialty! Excited to see your take on them, as mine are VERY labor intensive, but also VERY delicious. I used to make them for my mother's birthday every year, as she loved how I made them. My recipe is quite different from most that Ive seen. I coat them in flour, fry them, add my tomato gravy with my secret ingredient (brown sugar) and then pop them in the oven to bake for a while. I learned this technique from a former Latvian boyfriend. I also don't add rice, because I forgot it the first time, and discovered I liked them better that way. I serve them with sour cream for garnish and mashed potatoes as a side. Hoping to find an easier way. ❣ We had a restaurant here in suburban Cleveland, OH that had been here since the dawn of time, but they closed down last year and their's were delicious.

So deliciious! Its simmering on my stove top right now and it taste great! I used beef bone broth, ground turkey for my meat and used Quaker Quick Barley instead of rice. I did use a little more broth because I bought a pretty big cabbage, probably another 1/4 cup as you recommended. I also printed off the Cabbage Role Crockpot soup to try another day. Looking forward to trying that one too! If you love cabbage rolls then this is a winner! Thank you Catherine!

Going to use this as a guide....I have thrive freeze dried food for the beef onions and cheese. Going to precook the rice to make sure it's cooked through cause the meat is already cooked. Hope it comes together quickly. Update. Delicious

Since I always cheat a little with my regular cabbage rolls Ill probably do so with this too, I use a jar of prego instead of making my own sauce and have my family convinced Im a much better cook than I actually am! 😊

Hi Catherine - I'm watching my carbs and would like to substitute cauliflower rice for the long grain rice. Obviously, I wouldn't need all the liquid in this recipe. How much broth and water would you recommend I use for the cauliflower rice version? Thanks in advance!
You could leave out the rice. I don't think cauliflower rice would work in this particular recipe. You could prepare the cauliflower rice alone and serve it as a side to mix in at the table. But really cabbage and beef is a delicious complete meal, I used 1 cup uncooked Quaker quick barley which isn't low carb, but its very low glycemic. However no rice would be perfectly delicious in this recipe.

Looks great another tip would be to soak your rice (rinse first) and parboil. Looks yum

Maybe a can of diced tomatoes or some more rotel? Tomato juice could work too.
