The Lost Children of Senegal: The Tragic Tale of the Young 'Talibes' | Poverty in Africa Documentary

- You see them everywhere in Senegal. Groups of filthy, despondent children, aged between 4 and 15, desperately begging. But these children haven’t run away from home or been abandoned. They’re ’talibes’, students at religious boarding schools.
In exchange for a Koranic education, the children are forced to beg for more than 10 hours a day. Those who don’t earn enough money are ruthlessly beaten. Previously, every African village had its own school. Students used to help their teacher cultivate fields and occasionally ask neighbours for money but the majority of their day was spent studying.
Rural migration changed everything. Now the children are sent to city madrassas and most of their day is allocated to begging. And when they’re not begging, they’re learning the Koran by heart and fighting off sleep and hunger as they dodge the master’s whip. We spend several weeks living alongside these children, telling their stories.
This documentary was first released in 2009.

I’m confused what are they enforcing the children to learn most of Africa is still without electricity and clean water… if they are not being taught to build infrastructure to supply their basic needs what’s the point of school so freaking backwards and frustrating.

@@agnescraig2912 Some, not all. Rabbits, cats and dogs don't care about conditions, similar to many other animals. We have free education in the West for children under sixteen year of age and free contraception for adults. Sex is probably the own joy they get for free and a baby is a blessing.

@@akhripasta2670 I was adopted and my birth certificate now says my adopted parents name and my last name was changed...when I turned 15yr they emancipated me, I had a difficult time after that. I learned about Islam in my early 20's I didn't actually get to practice until my 40's and all that I went through finally had meaning, I was no longer angry...I would have never found Islam if my adopted parents had kept me! the future of Africa is its children. the only bright spot I see is that there are many very bright young entrepreneurs rising in some of the societies, so they may make a way for others over the decades.

I have been One just like them, I spend 6 years in Dara and I don't regret it even though it was difficult I would send my children to have the same education that I had.
