Honduras: Escaping violence and poverty | DW Documentary

- Every year, tens of thousands of people from the central American nation of Honduras leave their home country to try and reach the United States. A dangerous journey that often ends in death. The refugees are escaping poverty, gang violence and natural catastrophes.
Honduras: a nation hit ever more frequently by extreme weather such as tropical hurricanes and flooding. Almost 70 per cent of the population lives in poverty; more than 50 per cent of those are in dire need. Violent incidents, gang warfare and abductions are part of daily life here. The murder rate is one of the highest in the world. Many Hondurans see no other option but to leave. They are undeterred by the high cost; the risk that they’ll die on the journey or be murdered by human traffickers; or just how unlikely it is that they’ll actually make it to the US at all. Often, it’s the men that leave; their wives and children stay behind and never hear back from their husbands and fathers, even if they’ve managed to enter the US and are living illegally there. The money they promised to send to their families never arrives. As a result, more and more women feel compelled to flee themselves. They might take one of their children along, or leave them all with relatives. The country is losing its life blood - in some regions, villages are populated only by children and elderly people. Aid organizations try to help the most desperate, but even they are powerless to stem the tide of refugees.

I don't understand why North Americans think they need to bring the bible to an already Christian country. Ok, charity work is much needed, also development aid, teaching, etc. You may also talk about the bible and Jesus Christ. But why founding new denominations enticing away followers from other churches. That is not missionizing, that is proselytism.

As a Honduran, this is the best depiction of the situation in the country. The sad thing is that there's no hope in sight. The current government, as well as the last one, has extremely close ties to criminal organizations. Also, corruption has destroyed all government institutions at all levels.

@Rocío Aguilera actually it varies. Porque este gobierno actual no es para nada US friendly, and they are as bad or worse than the last one. Lo que esta detras de esto es poca educación and legislators who can't read or write. People in Honduras don't run for government to serve they run for government to steal. No matter their political stance. Some are US friendly, others aren't, but their end goal is the same. Take as much as I can while in government.

I feel terrible for that elderly mom wondering whether her son is dead or alive. Her eyes are filled with so much pain, it's almost tangible. It's so very heartbreaking for anyone seeing that because WE all know that her son is no longer with us. I think, in her heart, she knows, as well, but that kind of pain is just too great to face and acknowledge without real proof. May our Lord be with that beautiful mom (and her daughter) as she wonders and worries about her dear son, and fears the worst.

@@gladysrodriguez5647 working like w slave ain't no way to live.
the poverty experienced in places like honduras is on another level though
Okay..
It's unfortunate what the countries surrounding the US are going through but it's not ok to come into a country without respect to the laws. It's not right to come to the US illegally, receive assistance from the government, pay no taxes which ultimately put a strain on the hardworking people who are already struggling to survive themselves.
I see the pain, hopelessness in most of these people. So so sad.
The extremely depressing part is that that the dangerous part isn't even the border crossing itself into the U.S. NOBODY reaches the border without paying the coyotes. Even if you were to reach the border on your own, as of right now you will be told to stay in Mexico until your asylum hearing. Then, the coyotes will find out you made it and didn't pay, and either need to come up with the money or it's lights out. That's assuming you're not kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. There's a disconnect in information from countries like Guatemala / Honduras to Mexico. They only hear stories about success, never about the danger involving Mexico. As someone who lives in the U.S. I strongly caution against making this journey. Not because I have a problem with immigrants, but because they find thousands of bodies near the border every year. It's not like it was 15+ years ago where you simply ride a train to the promised land, wait until nightfall and hop the fence / cross the Rio Grande.
Mother's put their female children on birth control before they go. The cartel and our government are in this together. Obama is running the country behind the scenes.
When corruption becomes a way of life in a society, it is so hard to undo that. On the other hand, people still want to give birth to a child in a society like this. Vicious cycle.
That's a depressingly shallow grasp of the issues. I'd say you put no thought & zero research In to it. Yet you make pronouncements. UGH.

@Donnell Okafor let me explain you. I am Honduran. Here in Honduras only around 15% of the people finish High School. This value is even lower in rural areas. This is probably the typical family in which her husband took her away from her home when she was 15. Women in Honduras are submissive because otherwise she would probably become a victim of domestic violence. She didn't decide to have children. Women here have no voice or power to decide at home. They live to feed their man, have s*x when he wants, and raise their children. She can't get away because she is poor, she has three children, in her hometown she will never find a job and in the city nobody can take care of her kids while she's working. Finding a job in the city wouldn't be easy for her and salaries are extremely low.
In conclusion, she's not stupid, she lives in that situation because women have no choice here. You need to see life from the perspective of people here to understand that they are not free like you to decide what happens to their lives.

In the past, I traveled to Honduras many times as part of my parish mission team, and as the advance man where I would prepare for the arrival of the team. We served in San Francisco de al Paz, in the heart of Olancho, primarily building water purification systems, latrines, and sending medical missions. I also spent much time in Juticalpa, the capitol of Olancho. I was in the very church shown in this video and knew Padre Alberto Cauci. I love Honduras because I love the people. In spite of their poverty, they are some of the kindest, most generous, hard working people I have ever met. Are there bad people? Of course, all cultures have bad people. Will someone tell me why US companies invest millions of dollars in Chinese industries, when we could be having those same products manufactured, if not in the US, at least in our Central American neighbors. Even if you sent money directly to these people, the gangs would just come and take everything from them. First things first: the gangs have to go. But that's not going to happen when the government themselves is in on the action. If the government truly wanted to get rid of the gangs, it could be done. Colombia did it. The Philippines did it (although there was much bloodshed). You country simply cannot succeed when the people are being extorted by gangs.
The Philippines never did it because it seems that the gangs crept their way to government...our Senate and Congress is a circus right now. Duterte messed the justice system of the country so bad that the son of The Justice Secretary who was caught with illegal marijuana was abstained in just 3 months (a record), while a jailed senator due to trumped up charges is still in prison for more than 6 years and not to mention the thousands killed who were presumed to be doing illegal drugs.
The gangs are the fault of America. Illegals get arrested in US and then learn gang culture and tattoos. Then they are deported to Honduras and start gangs with the knowledge they learned from the US gangs in prisons.
Colombia still has gangs. The ELN is the biggest. No cartel nor syndicates can't afford to lose the world's biggest cocaine producer for obvious reasons.

I have been living in San Pedro Sula for more than two years, I can say with certainty that this city has its own rules, like all cities, but if they are observed, no one will suffer. Farmers are given special respect and they should become the main characters of the programs, because despite the hurricanes and floods, Honduras has enormous natural resources that need to be developed. Nothing was ever solved by fleeing to the USA, and stories about how everything badly do not reflect reality, since examples of successful Hondurans who rose from the bottom without anyone's help are not shown. Yes, there is corruption, but show at least one country in which it does not exist? Honduras is a good country, but one that needs to be worked on together, not run away from.

Your ignorance is showing. Contraception is not readily available and expensive. Abortion is banned. Sex Ed is minimal if at all. It is a strongly patriarchal culture that has led to rape, forced sexual violence and little access to health care. If you don't care enough to educate yourself kindly keep your comments to yourself.
Latinos like em big
With a man who brings peanuts home and will bail on you first boat to Florida.
The poor animals that suffer even more...heartbreaking
Such cute little children...my heart and love goes to them❤❤❤🙏🙏.....god end all evil🙏❤☀
And tens of thousands of these wonderful people are flooding into the United States right now. Absolutely terrifying.
The US has become a dumping ground for dysfunctional, failed narco states. Our nation is now a flophouse for these people. Soon we will be just like them.
That little girl looks just like my daughter. It makes me want to cry.
So sad. I’m blessed to have been born in America. But have served my country and traveled abroad. Most have no idea what poor really is 😢🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you for your service. We treat our homeless especially homeless veterans like shit.
@@donnalawrence8593 WE don't, the US government does. Uses and abuses them like toilet paper. Veterans should be made a priority instead of refugees
Most wonderful documentary coverage video about Honduras 🇭🇳 populations poverty & diving in violence circumstances...DW documentary coverage introduced depressed circumstances truly talking, opening minds & eyes opening...thanks for sharing
"There's a lot of unemployment there but I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to my child."
Woman, please listen to yourself. If there's no job then why do you keep having kids?
I work construction . One of the few white guys that can "Hang " .. I have worked alongside Hondurans , I ask questions of them , What was it like getting to The US ? and be told " We got robbed all the way here " One hard worker named Cesar used to trip me out , He knew very few words of English , Always smiling , We went to an All You can Eat and I never saw anyone eat like that , He mixed up everything , Gravy , beets , broccoli , chicken , meat , everything into a swirl , And licked the plate clean . I sat there in awe ,, Back to work till the sun set . The immigrants that come from these dire places work , work and keep working , They are amazing and kind . I just wish that somehow all those central American countries could get it together and stop stealing from their own . Honduras could be a paradise , but greed is keeping it down
God all I ask is why? Why? So much pain in the world. So much pain.
Because people are bad.
I feel for these people. No one should have to live this way.
While this is sad, the answer isn’t to migrate. The answer is for all those dissatisfied to join together and overthrow the gangs/government. All M&L class ppl in every country r struggling to some extent around the world dur to extremely high income and wealth inequality levels worldwide. U don’t make Honduras better by leaving and it creates problems in the US. Poverty and struggling r bad in the US as well. Americans in general don’t like all the migration and ppl disrespecting our laws. Come the legal way, wait ur turn, or please don’t come to the US.

May God bless and protect you Father Cauci....
Seeing what other people went through, all you want to do is get on your knees and thank God that you're a U.S. citizen. Racism, inequality, whatever. Thank God I'm a U.S. citizen living peacefully in America
It's blows my mind that all this places have so much nature 🌳,,,so much space , so pretty.
Comparing to living in the City 🚦,,,
I'll pray the lil girl gets her 3k so she can Walk🙌🏼💫
Truly heart breaking looking at that poor little girl with cerebral palsy, that woman had "5" kids at table, why on earth would you have so many when you cannot even afford food.. I have 1 daughter, had her at 35 and I won't have another one because of the immense cost and responsibility of raising a child.
I was born in San Pedro Sula, my parents were from the US. Sadly i had to leave. I loved the beaches and mountains, but i had to go
Man you're lucky you left. Don't you see the pain
@3o9afa yep, I did for many years. Enough is enough.
Your parents are from Honduras meaning that they were born there.
God bless Honduras beautiful country please lets save it
Amazing work DW!!!
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
The country is so beautiful yet so sad.. darkness loom above and surrounds them.
Many other countries are virtually equally poor to Honduras and yet they don't have Honduras problems
Because they're not controlled by Nazi CIA
Because they are not descended from AZTECS, the uncivilized race which commits human slaughter .
It just seems that so. I'm sure if DW makes a detailed documentary like what they did here, it will be revealed that there's not much difference between Honduras and other Central American countries.
These people have to learn that they have to fight for their country and their rights and not just run away and expect others to house and feed them . This is the problem of many citizens , wanting an easy way out , and not fighting for their country , and this has to stop , OR BE STOPPED .
Why is the real issue being ignored by everyone??? Too many people... People make kids like there is no tomorrow.. If Honduras had a third of the current population, the situation wouldn't be bad at all..
women have no say....illiteracy which means free sex
Incovenient truth and Catholic church also in fault in this. They prefer to keep people stupid and poor so they can maintain their power over them. Lack of education, self responsibility and low morals do the rest.
Thank you DW for always focusing on the right issues. Wishing the U.S. , CANADA and other richcountries could help these poor countries.
the US has given $261 million dollars to Honduras, Guatemale, and El Salvador since 2021
Here in the US we gave 66 BILLION to the UN just in 2021 alone, to fund 160 different country's problems.
We give more than 1/3 of the entire UN budget, and that doesn't take into account the Red Cross contributions, etc.
Believe me, we are spending way more taxpayer money trying to help.
If the country won't help themselves, and, despite all of our money, they are sending their able-bodied and children,
Well, so far it's cost us Billions now to care for all of these migrants, who come under the guise of "asylum seekers" when they, in no way qualify.
It's running our country into the ground, we are homeless, here, as US citizens.
Not enough resources to take in millions of people
