    • @LrdZanny
      @LrdZanny 4 года назад +2

      You can use the Assistant Tool in Krita to make grids, its in the tool options dropdown.
      If you want a proportional grid you can use the grids and guides docker to have a grid of customizably sized cells.

    I have watched this video all most all day, learning such a lot about digital painting from this wonderfully generous French artist. I am new to digital art, only just purchased a tablet in the last few weeks and there is a lot to learn. David Revoy is making the process so much easier. Respect and thanks.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  3 года назад +3

      Thanks! The process you see on this video bypass all the drawing and replace it with cut big shapes in the first part. I can use this technique only on landscape or when a character is a silhouette or turning their back; as soon as a character face the camera or I get a perspective; this workflow falls appart on my side. I'm probably not skilled enough yet to anticipate the perspective deformation of the silhouette of form. It's a never ending learning story ^__^ I wish you good luck on your own path!

    When you can already see the picture so early in the beginning, I can somehow feel that there is much hard work that has been done to hone your skills to this degree.
    It's very beautiful and very touching/moving. It's just incredible, I'm speechless because of the feelings I get seeing the early stage to the final stage of the painting. The final painting itself has this kind of....thing... that made the viewers deeply moved. I don't know what that is. But there is something there....

    • @DavidRevoy

      Thank you very much! Unfortunately, my skill has its limit: right now I can paint that only with a single point perspective; a character seen from front (not too much top-down, or bottom-up deformation, or camera shortcut) and when the character turn back to camera it is ease a lot my work (working this way with painting and detailing a face or hands is hard). But I'm still training to one day be able to handle that. Painting this way feels very free and I wish I could make my comic this way. Thank you very much for your very encouraging comment!

      Thanks! The technique used for the character here is super weak; I was lucky to have a theme where she was turning her back to the camera (easier) with large clothes (easier too). This is the main downside of this approach by shape: Cutting big shapes accurately require a skill I don't have yet. I probably should have done at least a light sketch of the character silhouette prior starting this painting. :)

    Sometimes I do this also, starting with painting shapes instead of sketch. Krita has a little "fill" brush that u can draw filled shapes with and I sometimes use it to make silouettes & flat color. It's not super precise but it lets you coat the canvas with all your basic shapes quickly & has zero lag unlike the big textured brushes

      Hehe, I know this one; it was developped for me ^__^ You'll find on my DVD 'chaos and evolution" from 2010 a full chapter about painting with shapes on a software named "Alchemy"; when Krita developper saw that; they made the experimental tool, that was super nice of them.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  4 года назад +3

      Thanks! For this one, it was an improvisation; I only had in mind her silhouette and a temple in background (what I directly cut at start). This was a lucky accident; I rarely start an experiment like that and end with a piece. Of course, I never published here the dozens of other weird workflow attempt and idea where I deleted the file after 15min of scribbling around with no ideas. xD I usually prefer to plan and do thumbnails, etc...

    Can you provide a tutorial or an explanation on how you approach environment painting? I'm trying to create some background environments for my novel and I can't approach them the same way I approach character illustrations. Thank you in advance.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  4 года назад +1

      Hi, that's indeed a difficulty: characters require a more precise drawing while background proportion and design can often be improvised while painting. This often leads artist to use various approach for both; or struggle to unify a method. I'm using here a 'blocky method' where I model quickly all object of the scene as if they were very old 3D video games with low polygons ; this shape simplification allows me to focus on the light and ambiant of the scene in priority and also make the values/colors producing interesting 2D shapes for the compo. The downside of a technique like that start to show as soon as a character is over expressive or in action pose. The blocky approach is rarely good to depict that... So I'm searching also, even after 200 pages of painted webcomic =) be sure that if I find something, I'll share!

    • @Cacalotlraven
      @Cacalotlraven 4 года назад

      David Revoy that is an interesting method and I think I have come across it before in my own studies but I never realized why they didn’t work when I added a character into the scene. Your description makes sense. I also have a problem setting things into a scene. Do you ever plan an environment from a top view perspective (like and architect) before painting it from a first person view?

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  4 года назад +1

      thank you! I'm painting under a layer with a canvas texture (from the default resources of Krita) in 'grain merge' blending mode for the first part of the artwork with big volumes. Smaller strokes are over this layer with textured brushes. It creates this "thick on thin" aspect of traditional oil paint. :)

      Thank you! I tried today to replicate with scenes a bit more complex (eg. top down view with character getting swooshy gesture and deformation in perspective): it doesn't work! Avoiding a sketch or a thumbnail works only for this very illustration theme because the silhouette and setup was in fact really simple. That's something I learned :)

    (y'a une différence entre speedpainting et timelapse ?)

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  4 года назад +1

      Merci! J'imagine que les définitions ne m'appartiennent pas et je peux me tromper. Speedpainting pour moi est un terme relatif: 'une peinture plus rapide que les habituelles dans leur temps d'executions'. Pour moi qui prends des dizaines d'heures sur des peintures parfois; un truc fais en une heure ou deux tombe dans ma catégorie "speedpainting". Et je dis relatif car pour d'autre artistes, mes deux heures peuvent être leurs grand format, et pour eux un "speedpainting" peux durer 15minutes.
      "Timelapse" ça défini les vidéos en accéléré; comme les vidéos de plantes qui grandissent à vue d'oeil; ou les stafs qui montent une scène de concert énorme en trois minutes à cause de l'accelération des images. Ici; j'ai un peu plus de deux heures d'enregistrement compressé en grosso modo 10 minutes. Voilà :)

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  3 года назад +1

      Hi, not yet on my channel. It would take a long long time to explain what's going on here. But to sumary: the main fundamental skill in this type of technique are: 1. Shape VS Form , 2. Values , 3. Light & Shadows, 4. Perspective (for the temple). There is almost no Anatomy, Gesture (the character from rear view was really simplifying the piece). You can learn a similar skill if you train about composition of big shape, then learn how to transform them into form with perspective and how to organise depth with values. Book I recommend on the topic: The Andrew Loomis ones, and the James Gurney one. Good luck!
