The Fairy Fir tree - (Happy holidays!) - Krita timelapse

  • I compressed the 6h (or more) of recorded video for an illustration into a 8min timelapse. Honnestly, the artwork could have been done twice faster; but I made 'small' mistakes on the first steps of the making-of (maybe I wanted to go too fast?). Main mistakes: no consistent light direction on foreground and background + wanting to hide the special effect to the end for the tree decoration and finding midway the result is not in my taste anymore. Lessons I learnt on this one: block the keylight more seriously on the underpainting (a layer I tend to be very distracted by all the yummy colors and ambiant possibilities). All of that made me paint-over 3 or 4 times area... But the end illustration is fine, so I thought it was interesting to share the process and annotate to show the mistakes. I hope you'll like this!

    It's nice to know that I'm not alone at making art errors and even professional and skilled artists still make mistakes from time to time. While the process wasn't perfect, I really find how you managed your mistakes to be very helpful and insightful. Not that many artists present their processes in this way (if they do at all) and I really appreciate that you took the time to do it this way. :D

    Hello David, I can honestly say, if you would not point out the mistakes you did on this piece, I would not have noticed them at all.
    The one thing that I do noticed but just was a matter of taste and choice on your part, was the difference between the initial sketch and the final painting.
    I liked the idea of the more visible tree trunk with the cat ontop and the girl, stuck in the snow wave.
    This is, like I said a pure artistic choice and thats the reason why there are so many differend art styles.
    I wish you and your family Happy Holidays and a good start into a better year 2021.

    Very nice David, I particularly like your work with the light on the snow (and the grass peeking out here and there)!
    The result is awesome but I must admit that personally I would probably have gone with the original yellowish tree-lights rather than leaving the faeries white; this result ends up having a pretty cold palette for being a Christmas image.
    ... But anyway, always interesting to see the process! I should definitely learn from you to block in the light on the thumbnail like this, it does allow for much more flexibility to experiment than my own usual process.
    Merry Christmas!

      Yes, I had on my second monitor three images opened all the time: One is a portrait of Pepper with her cape I use as an avatar I drew for a previous episode. And the two other were snow paintings of Ivan Shishkin ; a crush I had while browsing history of painting on Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Shishkin (see Winter and "in the wild north" painting).

    Hey David, I am an aspiring comic book colourist and I started using krita lately for my pieces. But I am really struggling with the resolution settings. You see the artworks that I colour must go for printing. So it would really help if you could make a video or reply to this comment. Thank you and I really like everything about your channel.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  3 года назад +1

      Hey, if you require an absolute answer to a resolution of something that should go printed ; the best isto get the exact value from your printer. If you don't have a printer yet; you can guess-timate it by getting a little bit higher than the output (it can't hurt, except your performance). The basic here for the european comic size (hardcover, tall books) would be a A4@300ppi (2480x3508px), but if you can go up to that, it would only help your comic (maybe you'll get one of this rare printer able to do 450ppi? maybe a panel can be spread online as a wallpaper later?). In my case, I found right now my sweet spot at 3600px large. It's really large, but I already got an exhibition from a gallery where they printed the pages as posters, and it really did help to get details.

    Hi can I ask how to make a speed painting video. I been using Linux for over 2 years but I struggle to do video editing. And I wonder how you record, speed up the footage and export, as I found that each of these steps are super slow

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  3 года назад

      Hey, it is! It takes hours of editing... But it is way easier nowadays than it was when I started in 2009 to record on Linux.
      1) Record your desktop with OBS
      2) (optional) preaccelerate your video segment with ffmpeg command line. This allows to not keep hours of sources (for later ease to archive, no need to keep all real time).
      3) Edit with Kdenlive (title/intro/ending/soundtrack). It has a speed up feature for clip.

    Hey david, just wondering could you make a short video or just reply to this comment regarding what hardware you use?/advise for someone wanting to do a similar style of digital art? Ie. Are you on laptop/Mac/pc/tablet? Etc. Thanks for the help. Keep drawing brother

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  3 года назад

      Hey, you can find on my blog www.davidrevoy.com/ what I use in details , I often write article about that. Maybe doing a video is a good idea about it, but I still take more than two days to produce a video (1 day recording/writing, one day editing and uploading) and it's hard to manage with the production of artworks on the side and life. For the big picture: I'm using a PC (AMD processor and GPU) with Kubuntu Linux 20.04 on it (operating system). I use most of the time a Intuos4 XL tablet (a regular but oversized tablet) with two monitors (a main 27inch quadHD and a 21inch 1080p for chat and ref). I connect sometime my Cintiq13HD when I feel I need to get more gestures for a sketch, or for precise line (inking). I use the Free Libre and Open Source software Krita mainly. I hope you'll find this information useful!

    • @1Pallendrome1
      @1Pallendrome1 3 года назад

      Yes very helpful, I appreciate the rapid response also. Am I correct in thinking the intuos4 does not have a display but is just a blank black drawing tablet? Whereas the cintiq has a display right? I have a basic Wacom without a display and I found no screen just makes me find it hard to draw. Thx for the help

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  3 года назад

      @@1Pallendrome1 Yes, true. The Intuos has no screen and Cintiq13 as an embeded 1080p one. The difficulty to draw with a tablet (without screen) is often the ratio between the surface and the monitor: a little stroke on it leads to a long stroke on the monitor. Over the last years, cheap monitors got bigger and tablet haven't really upscaled. Someone using a 10x15cm or around tablet with a 27inch monitor could experience very unpleasant control (very soap-ish). Tablet with monitor are always 1:1 : the surface has same size than monitor; and that's what make them better device to control lines. But here, I prefer the tablet without screen so I took the largest one I could to get my hands movement registered with the most details. I have a good level of accuracy with that while getting other advantage: easier access to keyboard, no warming surface (embed monitor warms a lot). But I keep the small Cintiq13 when I really need to get more accuracy; or see my gesture. In this case, the large intuos can't really help.

    • @1Pallendrome1

    Can you do watercolor in Krita

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  3 года назад

      Hi, no software can simulate real watercolor because it involves some complex floating fluid and pigment interaction (and paper absorbtion). All the digital solution are approximations to reproduce the effects (often failing at reproducing the original fun of the process). In Krita; you'll find a category of brushes that mimic the type of rendering you can get with watercolor. But some experience with real watercolor on paper is probably the best starting point to learn what type of effect you like and select the one you want to reproduce.
