Hi.---I wasn't born then but these old tapes were my Mums mother tapes and I found them and put on disk then MP4.They have all passed away now, very sad but my aunty got to be 100. Loved them very much.

I adore this book!!! They did such a good job bringing it faithfully to life. As a matter of fact, it was seeing the first few episodes on TV and missing the ending that made me buy the book. I simply HAD to find out what happened to Laura, Marian, and Walter! I didn’t care for either of the later versions. They REALLY NEED to release this on dvd!
This is the best and most faithful version of the Woman in White ever televised An amazing gothic ghost story. I first read it when I was 7 , the novel belonged to my late grandmother, who had a signed copy from Wilkie Collins himself . It is a wonderful, complex story . In my opinion ,the storyline is far more engaging later on in the novel.
Agreed! This is an excellent adaptation of a very complex book, and the cast was spectacular, although I think Alan Badel didn't resemble the book-described Count F at all. I love Wilkie Collins novels, also The Moonstone by him, of which by far the best televised version was with Vivien Heilbron and Robin Ellis in 1972. I watch that one (DVD) 3 or 4 times a year. The later versions can't begin to compare.
@@footfault I love to read Wilkie Collins, too☺ I read "The Woman In White" when I was just 18 and working in London after I had graduated from the German equivalent of high school and was abroad for the first time. I actually searched for the location where Walter met Anne Catherick for the first time! There have been three very good German adaptations in the 1970s of Wilkie Collins' three best known novels: "The Woman In White", "Armadale" and "The Moonstone", which very popular and introduce Wilkie Collins to a large German audience. Especially the German version of "Armadale" was extremely good. However, I respectfully disagree about this tv adaptation from 1982. I really don't think it has aged well. The acting is extremely stilted and artificial. And considering that they have just two hours for telling the whole story, they waste a lot of time with scenes that go on far too long. I'm not at all a fan of the modern way of having only very short scenes because today many viewers have the attention span of a goldfish. But the pace of this adaptation is far too slow even for me. Nothing really interesting happens in the first episode. They introduce the characters, but they are so devoid of personality that there ist no reason at all to care for their fate. Especially Marian who is one of the best female literary heroines ever, remains pale! The 1997 adaptation is also not my cup of tea. But I love the new BBC adaptation from 2018. It features wonderful actors like Charles Dance, who is the best Frederik Fairlie I have seen so far - very funny but still nasty with a touch of evil because of his extreme egocentricity. Also, Laura Fairly has much more personality and is less of a spineless doll.The production value is lavish, and while there are a few plot changes, the heart of Wilkie Collins' narrative and message concerning the powerlessness and economic dependance of married Victorian women remains intact. My only quibble with this latest adaptation is, that they didn't get Count Fosco and his wife at all. In fact most adaptations don't get this character - which is a pity since he is one of the most fascinating literary villains. Otherwise I can really recommend the latest adaptation. I really wish that someone would tackle "Armadale". Lydia Gwilt is after all one of the greatest literary female villains! The German adaptation is especially powerful because the actress who plays Lydia Gwilt, is absolutely terrific. In Germany she is still remembered for being Lydia Gwilt.
@@sabineb.5616 Extremely interesting comments from a fellow Victorian literature admirer! However, I do defend the 5-episode (4.5 hours) 1982 adaptation. The music and cinematography contribute much to creating the mood, suiting it to Collins' plot. To call the precise, genteel yet deeply suffering presentation by Jenny Seagrove the picture of a spineless doll is not how I see Seagrove's work here. It seems to me that a spineless person goes the way of least resistance - such that a truly spineless Laura might have run away with Walter when the opportunity arose. Then she would have risked only her inheritance, and could have had the love of her life. Instead, she chews the very galling pill of total sacrifice to duty - to fulfill her obligation to the promise she made to her dying father, that she would marry Glyde. Glyde will not release her from that promise. So be it. Then the moral code demands her self-sacrifice. That takes a pretty firm spine. The modern viewer does not understand the voluntary yielding of self-interest to higher ideals.
@@footfault thanks a lot for your answer ☺️ I admit that I made a mistake, when I wrote that the 1982 adaptation is only two hours long. You're right and it's of course four and a half hours long. Your interpretation of Laura's role is very interesting, and it could be applied to Laura's role in the novel as well. I will take a second look at Jenny Seagrove's performance! Laura's characterisation simply isn't compatible anymore with our modern sensitivities. Even when I read the novel for the first time as a teenager I couldn't understand why Walter Hartright fell for Laura and not for Marian. But wait, wasn't Marian supposed to be ugly?? I always thought it was extremely unfair that only the arch villain Count Fosco appreciated her fully as a woman. It's interesting btw that no adaptation ever shows us Wilkie Collins' version of Marian Halcombe. The acrtresses who have been cast are always very handsome😉 Tastes differ, and the 1982 adaptation just doesn't appeal to me at all, although IMO the 1997 version is much worse for very different reasons. Do you have an idea why there is no English adaptation of "Armadale"? Lydia Gwilt is a wonderfully complex female villain after all. There's also a tragic history to the "Armadale" adaptation: the actress who played Lydia Gwilt had a torrent affair with the actor who played Ozias Midwinter. And the actor committed suicide shortly after "Armadale" had been broadcasted. The full extent of this tragic event only came to light recently after the death of the actress Ellen Schwiers.

You made me so interested in that novel - which I haven't read - that, first, I tried to find the German and possibly an English dramatization. No luck. Not that the German would have been comprehensible to me as an English/Dutch speaker, but with subtitles it would have been welcome. So then I bought the book in eBay for a little over $3, shipping included (such a deal). Thanks for galvanizing my interest in Collins' other work. Do you think the post office will send it, what with COVID-19? Our local PO takes every other day off during this crisis. Stay healthy.

They ruined the story and changed so much, besides the names of the characters, almost nothing followed the book. This is SO much better! Thanks again!

I read the book this month, drawn to it after enjoying The Moonstone last year. Collins uses the same narrative technique in both--various perspectives from several narrators, each giving more and different bits of information, reflecting the personalities of each informant and tantalizing the reader to press on to learn all the Secrets. I think this may be a better story. I am happy to have found this BBC adaptation, a relief after trying to watch the slick later version that ruins the story completely.

I haven't even finished the novel, I'm at chapter 38- but I couldn't help watching what I've already read. I like the guy playing Hartright and I'm swooning over the house, rooms and grounds used as Limmeridge! Part of my curiosity was to see who would play Marian, because aside from being such an important character, the way Wilkie describes her is so intriguing. When Hartright first sees her from afar, he thinks her a striking beauty until she comes close and he discovers her face is ugly! It made me giggle- I can safely say, the actor playing Marian in this series is very very far from unattractive! Thanks for sharing this video!

I was doing it in my English Literature class when I was in form II. Now a nice souvenir to watch it on film. May be some distortions from the book itself, but nevermind cannot make it 100% to the book......
I watched this in a later version of the movie. What a fantastic story!! A must see, loved it. I read this version is faithful to the book, I might have to watch it.
She's by far the more fanciable of the two. ! And possessed of a very stimulating intellect . As for Hartright : he seems a bit of a drip....sorry.! Toby Stephens in BBC Radio version was far better ! In fact the radio version was superior in every way.
Ian Richardson played Mr. Fairlie in this and the 1990s woeful version. I think this is much truer to the character--self centered, so languid, so put upon by every thing outside himself.
Ah, the glimmering, rayonant, encircling circle of endless British great families literature...Always envolving "deep affective feelings and corresponding commitments if not life enduring affectionate thoughts" plus "annual income and social stability", fox hunting, whisky in old barrels, bravery of envy, envy of bravery, immense marble steps, illegitimate children, book of Common Prayers, hymns phrased out by small wod organs, graveyards in the garden of old churches and all of this embraced by at least two or three luxurious failed marriages, songs of Purcel at the library of the mansions and related circumventing frustrations.... An endless repeated world.

It seems like the casting director was so in love with Marian that the actress just had to show up Laura in every way. Diana Quick is such a talented beauty :)
I would say that both are exquisitely faithful to the book. Jenny Seagrove is the *only* actress I have ever seen who really can portray a Victorian heroine as written. Others seem unable to prevent some elements of modern women from coming through and in some cases dominating the portrayal.
@@OFWarhhbTN Very true, and your observation is one of my main objections to the more modern adaptations. Mrs. Gaskell's "North and South" is a case in point. The 1975 version with Patrick Stewart was excellent, whereas the sexed-up 2004 version oozed 21st-century attitudes, and was a travesty of the book. This happens often with remakes.
I got paid £9 for the day and was in the school scene with lots of other classmates from Kirkoswald and Renwick school. I recall they had towers of Diet Coke backstage.
I'm already loving this adaptation, there is none better or even close. However Marion is far too beautiful in this version though, despite Collins' description of her as "mannish" looking, I always did picture her to be more charming in person as well as manner and so this depiction is very accurate to MY vision.
This is a good version of Wilkie Collin's novel; better than the one with Tara Fitzgerald and Justine Waddell (tho' I liked that one). I didn't know about this edition. It is probably closer to the book, but it's been so long since I've read it, I don't remember how the events actually went. Thanks for sharing.

I liked the book a lot, but I don't really like this filming. Even though it is very close to the book. i think the film is too much shortened. I think Jenny Seagrove, who is a very good actress, is the wrong cast for Laura Fairlie. She is far too self assured for the role. I also don't like Daniel Gerroll as Walter Hartright.
After watching different adaptations of the novel, I can safely say this is the best. A fantastic script, brought to life by a perfect cast.

I adore this book!!! They did such a good job bringing it faithfully to life. As a matter of fact, it was seeing the first few episodes on TV and missing the ending that made me buy the book. I simply HAD to find out what happened to Laura, Marian, and Walter!

In my opinion ,the storyline is far more engaging later on in the novel.

I love Wilkie Collins novels, also The Moonstone by him, of which by far the best televised version was with Vivien Heilbron and Robin Ellis in 1972. I watch that one (DVD) 3 or 4 times a year. The later versions can't begin to compare.
@@footfault I love to read Wilkie Collins, too☺ I read "The Woman In White" when I was just 18 and working in London after I had graduated from the German equivalent of high school and was abroad for the first time. I actually searched for the location where Walter met Anne Catherick for the first time! There have been three very good German adaptations in the 1970s of Wilkie Collins' three best known novels: "The Woman In White", "Armadale" and "The Moonstone", which very popular and introduce Wilkie Collins to a large German audience. Especially the German version of "Armadale" was extremely good.
However, I respectfully disagree about this tv adaptation from 1982. I really don't think it has aged well. The acting is extremely stilted and artificial. And considering that they have just two hours for telling the whole story, they waste a lot of time with scenes that go on far too long. I'm not at all a fan of the modern way of having only very short scenes because today many viewers have the attention span of a goldfish. But the pace of this adaptation is far too slow even for me. Nothing really interesting happens in the first episode. They introduce the characters, but they are so devoid of personality that there ist no reason at all to care for their fate. Especially Marian who is one of the best female literary heroines ever, remains pale!
The 1997 adaptation is also not my cup of tea. But I love the new BBC adaptation from 2018. It features wonderful actors like Charles Dance, who is the best Frederik Fairlie I have seen so far - very funny but still nasty with a touch of evil because of his extreme egocentricity. Also, Laura Fairly has much more personality and is less of a spineless doll.The production value is lavish, and while there are a few plot changes, the heart of Wilkie Collins' narrative and message concerning the powerlessness and economic dependance of married Victorian women remains intact. My only quibble with this latest adaptation is, that they didn't get Count Fosco and his wife at all. In fact most adaptations don't get this character - which is a pity since he is one of the most fascinating literary villains. Otherwise I can really recommend the latest adaptation.
I really wish that someone would tackle "Armadale". Lydia Gwilt is after all one of the greatest literary female villains! The German adaptation is especially powerful because the actress who plays Lydia Gwilt, is absolutely terrific. In Germany she is still remembered for being Lydia Gwilt.
@@sabineb.5616 Extremely interesting comments from a fellow Victorian literature admirer! However, I do defend the 5-episode (4.5 hours) 1982 adaptation. The music and cinematography contribute much to creating the mood, suiting it to Collins' plot. To call the precise, genteel yet deeply suffering presentation by Jenny Seagrove the picture of a spineless doll is not how I see Seagrove's work here. It seems to me that a spineless person goes the way of least resistance - such that a truly spineless Laura might have run away with Walter when the opportunity arose. Then she would have risked only her inheritance, and could have had the love of her life. Instead, she chews the very galling pill of total sacrifice to duty - to fulfill her obligation to the promise she made to her dying father, that she would marry Glyde. Glyde will not release her from that promise. So be it. Then the moral code demands her self-sacrifice. That takes a pretty firm spine. The modern viewer does not understand the voluntary yielding of self-interest to higher ideals.

Your interpretation of Laura's role is very interesting, and it could be applied to Laura's role in the novel as well. I will take a second look at Jenny Seagrove's performance! Laura's characterisation simply isn't compatible anymore with our modern sensitivities. Even when I read the novel for the first time as a teenager I couldn't understand why Walter Hartright fell for Laura and not for Marian. But wait, wasn't Marian supposed to be ugly?? I always thought it was extremely unfair that only the arch villain Count Fosco appreciated her fully as a woman. It's interesting btw that no adaptation ever shows us Wilkie Collins' version of Marian Halcombe. The acrtresses who have been cast are always very handsome😉
Tastes differ, and the 1982 adaptation just doesn't appeal to me at all, although IMO the 1997 version is much worse for very different reasons.
Do you have an idea why there is no English adaptation of "Armadale"? Lydia Gwilt is a wonderfully complex female villain after all. The German adaptation has been so successful because the actress who played Lydia Gwilt was absolutely great. She died only recently and the German tv audience still remembered her as Lydia Gwilt. Ozias Midwinter was also great - as well as Ma Oldershaw and Dr. Downward! I'm pretty sure that the German production made a lot of mistakes as far as the correct presentation of the Victorian era is concerned. But they took Wilkie Collins' novel and his characters very seriously and rarely went for comic relief. There's also a tragic history to the "Armadale" adaptation: the actress who played Lydia Gwilt had a torrent affair with the actor who played Ozias Midwinter. And the actor committed suicide shortly after "Armadale" had been broadcasted. The full extent of this tragic event only came to light recently after the death of the actress Ellen Schwiers.

You made me so interested in that novel - which I haven't read - that, first, I tried to find the German and possibly an English dramatization. No luck. Not that the German would have been comprehensible to me as an English/Dutch speaker, but with subtitles it would have been welcome. So then I bought the book in eBay for a little over $3, shipping included (such a deal). Thanks for galvanizing my interest in Collins' other work. Do you think the post office will send it, what with COVID-19? Our local PO takes every other day off during this crisis. Stay healthy.

They ruined the story and changed so much, besides the names of the characters, almost nothing followed the book. This is SO much better! Thanks again!

I read the book this month, drawn to it after enjoying The Moonstone last year. Collins uses the same narrative technique in both--various perspectives from several narrators, each giving more and different bits of information, reflecting the personalities of each informant and tantalizing the reader to press on to learn all the Secrets. I think this may be a better story. I am happy to have found this BBC adaptation, a relief after trying to watch the slick later version that ruins the story completely.

I haven't even finished the novel, I'm at chapter 38- but I couldn't help watching what I've already read. I like the guy playing Hartright and I'm swooning over the house, rooms and grounds used as Limmeridge! Part of my curiosity was to see who would play Marian, because aside from being such an important character, the way Wilkie describes her is so intriguing. When Hartright first sees her from afar, he thinks her a striking beauty until she comes close and he discovers her face is ugly! It made me giggle- I can safely say, the actor playing Marian in this series is very very far from unattractive!

Ah, the glimmering, rayonant, encircling circle of endless British great families literature...Always envolving "deep affective feelings and corresponding commitments if not life enduring affectionate thoughts" plus "annual income and social stability", fox hunting, whisky in old barrels, bravery of envy, envy of bravery, immense marble steps, illegitimate children, book of Common Prayers, hymns phrased out by small wod organs, graveyards in the garden of old churches and all of this embraced by at least two or three luxurious failed marriages, songs of Purcel at the library of the mansions and related circumventing frustrations.... An endless repeated world.

I would say that both are exquisitely faithful to the book. Jenny Seagrove is the *only* actress I have ever seen who really can portray a Victorian heroine as written. Others seem unable to prevent some elements of modern women from coming through and in some cases dominating the portrayal.
I think Wilkie Collins was so enamoured of Marian Halcombe in his novel that he had her show up Laura Fairlie in every way in the book.
@@OFWarhhbTN Very true, and your observation is one of my main objections to the more modern adaptations. Mrs. Gaskell's "North and South" is a case in point. The 1975 version with Patrick Stewart was excellent, whereas the sexed-up 2004 version oozed 21st-century attitudes, and was a travesty of the book. This happens often with remakes.

I'm already loving this adaptation, there is none better or even close. However Marion is far too beautiful in this version though, despite Collins' description of her as "mannish" looking, I always did picture her to be more charming in person as well as manner and so this depiction is very accurate to MY vision.

This is a good version of Wilkie Collin's novel; better than the one with Tara Fitzgerald and Justine Waddell (tho' I liked that one). I didn't know about this edition. It is probably closer to the book, but it's been so long since I've read it, I don't remember how the events actually went. Thanks for sharing.
I don't know how they got away with naming the 1997 version. Its screenplay barely resembles the book.

I suggest this- Would it be a good idea if the population stopped climbing on each others backs whilst; the establishment and their promoters the press sit there making fools out of you. Why do we declare that? Who are we. Why are we on here. This might ex-plain some of the questions.- - "Mental Health" ? Meaning, all health, all behaviour, all thoughts, all unconscious activity. Anyone trying to claim that all this is "nothing to do with computers" is kidding themselves or has an agenda.. The following is an example of what computer tech has done for this world. You remember don't you that Gates and others said this- "Everyone will be well off and there will be almost no crime". We have had no replies to 1000 mails, meanwhile 2.5 000 000 watch just one violent film on the internet. The Indictment.--We traipsed cent London streets in threadbare clothes after we had been told to stop resolving the mental health issues of clients after they had been sent to us as hopeless cases by the NHS. They had recd, in some cases 20 yrs of drugging and police violence. They needed 7 hours techniques that work. One of them had been unable to leave the house for ten years but did so after four hours. We were then told to stop because we were taking money away from all sorts of people inc bupa / charities and the councils chambers of trade who use victims as cheap labour. We then got ambulances and funeral services sent round and found the police trying to prise our windows open with a pen knife. We began to suffer police attacks which we eventually held off by the use bodyguards. We then started looking into all the establ orgs we could find. We were also, with the victims, searching for people who care about their fellow man. We found almost none. The most frequent response was 'its nothing to do with me'.The giant MH Hosp whose clients and staff were coming to us for help was contacted because we were alarmed that taxpayers were funding the incompetence. The woman shrink told us this- "competence has no value in MH". The staff sais this- "she has killed people and its been covered up by Police. HM Courts. HM Coroners. Local Govt. Media incl BBC. HM Govt. HM Political Orgs .and so on. The HM religion is behind that MH hosp.The BBC told us to "hide the 1000pp evidence abroad". We now realise that a key reason for the police and other attacks was the funding programs applied to charities and others. We also have found out that 26 Universities are also implicated. The very first victims who approached us warned us that because the Royals are behind the MH system we should not try to expose it because we could end up dead. We took victims to a Govt. Minister .He sat there lying and denying he had signed documents and when confronted by documents he had signed he offered the police. One of the victims had been locked in the horrific Mental Hosp against his will by among others the police.THe Minister could not even resolve his own issues and knew nothing of MH. Each time we exposed him huge pictures of him appeared in the corrpt Local Press, this activity is going on all over UK. Its costing billions in media costs alone. The evasive Local Govt boss in this area is ex Social Services and is being paid hundreds of thousands of pounds each year.No one in the area would help the victims and even their families were trying to prevent the bid for justice.The people in the area admit his is insane yet he controls the corrupt mental hospital.. That's the place whose clients and even staff were coming to us for help. We asked the Psychiatrist Manager why they were doing that and she said this- “Competence Has No Value In Mental Health”. The staff at that place told us this- “She Has Killed People And Its Been Covered Up By Local Police. Press. Media. Local Govt. HM Coroners". We could get no response from local media which incl the Dimbleby press where we encountered a so called journalist who was the daughter of a “friend” of ours who was a “Councillor”.. We endured death threats from the HM Court system because of the US based Pinkerton and Burns rgs who are the people who shot or beat up workers in the US who objected to the starvation wages. The US Embassy also offered violence. There's no lack of computers within the Police. US Embassy. Local Govt. HM House Commons. Health System. Firms like Lloyds Bank. Tesco. Asda. Aldi. Mail Mirror. Lufthansa (re crash cover up). Orgs like EEC Brussels. Ombudswoman O Reilly (nothing can be done about 30.000 avoid deaths and corruption). HM Coroners. HM Princes Trust. .HM Prisons. HM Courts.. HM Lieutenants. Facebook. Twitter. Yahoo.1000s Funded Charities and affinity groups. Sport. Art Drama. Every religion we approached. Every Political Party we went to. Every teacher we contacted. Stop the sport.art. drama scam.

I liked the book a lot, but I don't really like this filming. Even though it is very close to the book. i think the film is too much shortened. I think Jenny Seagrove, who is a very good actress, is the wrong cast for Laura Fairlie. She is far too self assured for the role. I also don't like Daniel Gerroll as Walter Hartright.
