I think this is the best adaptation. Very like the book and no modernisation. Diana Quick is really really great at playing Marion Halcombe. Corby castle was used in this which is said to have a ghost of a radiant boy.

The movie - The Woman in White, 1997, starring Tara Fitzgerald, is also a very admirable drama, but with a running time of just 2 hours this shortened and changed story-line may not please those who are familiar with the novel.

Quite wonderful - the decor, the costumes - all comparable to the beauty of the dialogue, and the performances are immaculate, particularly that of Alan Badel as Count Fosco. I would love though to have seen the wedding ceremony between Walter and Laura! The ending was, I am pleased to say, as all great dramas should be - an emotional tearjerker!

Imagine having to marry someone against your will while in love with another man, and more - having to obey your husbands demands by law, no matter how disagreeable.

Beautifully moving!

After watching different adaptations of the novel, I can safely say this is the best. A fantastic script, brought to life by a perfect cast.

I read the book several years ago and have seen other adaptations which did not do it justice. This followed the book faithfully. It was so well written, acted, and directed. The settings and costumes were magnificent. Even though I know the story, this series had me on the edge of my seat until its conclusion. I couldn't stop watching until the end. Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Like another reviewer, I never knew this existed and I am so glad I stumbled upon it!!

This is a good version of Wilkie Collin's novel; better than the one with Tara Fitzgerald and Justine Waddell (tho' I liked that one). I didn't know about this edition. It is probably closer to the book, but it's been so long since I've read it, I don't remember how the events actually went. Thanks for sharing.

I'm already loving this adaptation, there is none better or even close. However Marion is far too beautiful in this version though, despite Collins' description of her as "mannish" looking, I always did picture her to be more charming in person as well as manner and so this depiction is very accurate to MY vision.

I haven't even finished the novel, I'm at chapter 38- but I couldn't help watching what I've already read. I like the guy playing Hartright and I'm swooning over the house, rooms and grounds used as Limmeridge! Part of my curiosity was to see who would play Marian, because aside from being such an important character, the way Wilkie describes her is so intriguing. When Hartright first sees her from afar, he thinks her a striking beauty until she comes close and he discovers her face is ugly! It made me giggle- I can safely say, the actor playing Marian in this series is very very far from unattractive! Thanks for sharing this video!

I liked the book a lot, but I don't really like this filming. Even though it is very close to the book. i think the film is too much shortened. I think Jenny Seagrove, who is a very good actress, is the wrong cast for Laura Fairlie. She is far too self assured for the role. I also don't like Daniel Gerroll as Walter Hartright.

FIRST time heard on BBC DRAMA few days ago and now a chance to see.
