  • It's easy to mistake Gameplay Animation and Gameplay Cinematics, after all when you play a game they are one of the same. But when you work professionally they are most definitely two different departments and need different skills from their animators. In this video I go through the skills needed for each and the differences between them.

    Gameplay all the way! Cinematics can be great but, for me, I'd like to make games where the height of the player's emotions happens during gameplay, not while just watching a cutscene.
    Also one of my favorite things in games is when cinematics transition smoothly into gameplay, I wish it happened more often : )

      Exactly my thoughts Russ...glad you feel the same way. And yes that Seamless transition in and out of Cinematics when done right is butter. I also wish more games would take the time to do it...it is however very difficult to pull off well.

    I love that your videos always pop up when I’m questioning my artistic life. I think that my course focused on cinematics/ film / TV. I’ve been working on a UE4 personal project with virtual production and learning how this pipeline is different and creating blueprints.
    I feel like Im still skilling up and trying to get into gameplay and learning how I can be employable in this role.
    It’s great to have someone so clearly explain it all. thanks for sharing your knowledge

      Great to hear Tammy and welcome to the channel...great comment. Keep going with the UE4 learning and personal projects, ultimately those are the ones that will help you most get that dream job as it shows dedication and hard work. Make sure to keep in touch going forward.

    The game studio I work for breaks it down even further. We hire for gameplay animators, in-game cinematic animators and cinematic animators - all on the game dev side. That's not including our Cinematics department which is it's own separate thing. The In-game cinematic animators are working in the game engine every day and are doing cinematics within the game engine as opposed to the film pipeline.

      Hey Jasmine. Thanks a lot and you’re absolutely spot on I’ve worked in a couple of studios that have complex animation departments setups. The bigger the game the more people you have and naturally the more subsections you need.
      It sounds like the studio you’re working on are very organised though. 👍🏾

    Great video! I truly understand the great feeling of seeing your chunks of gameplay animation interpolated and working. It's such an amazing feeling. But i also keep coming back to cinematics and a lot of cutscenes and cinematic trailers that got me into learning animation in the first place, and has always been a dream of mine to work in cinematics. Do you thinnk there is a specific set of skills you should prioritize to work in cinematics? Is there a "path" to follow to get closer to that? Is there a lot of difference between the salaries of gameplay animator and cinematic animator within the studios?

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  2 года назад +2

      Hey Joao...to be a Cinematic animator you need the same skills as animators from Film and VFX, so make sure you nail those 12 principles of animation and study composition and working to camera. In regards to salaries gameplay animators normally get paid more due to the job being more technical and rare to find.

    Thank for the breakdown of the difference of gameplay to cinematic game Animators. I seen in some games, while in gameplay as the player you lose control of the character and you move automatically by following a path. Would this also be a case where the gameplay animator would be responsible for this segment or would this be handled by design team since it's part of the level journey?

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  2 года назад +2

      Great question Anton..this is also handled by Gameplay Animation as it requires Gameplay Logic is just that the input instead being given by the player is given by game code on where the player needs to go. But the idea is exactly the same. Hope that makes sense.

    This is definetly something I wish i'd seen before I moved from Cinematics to Gameplay. I presumed the workflow was the same, BIG MISTAKE.
    I love the variety that comes with gameplay, animating is only half the task !

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  2 года назад +1

      Hey Jonney...indeed it's still incredibly useful to know about implementation regardless. It makes you a better game developer.

    Insightful! Do you sometimes see animators doing both VFX/feature/cinematic and gameplay, even if the workflow is very different? I'm a junior VFX animator, and I love it, but when I hear about what makes gameplay animation so special, I crave to try it! But we are so taught to keep to a specific field... I want to try everything haha!

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  2 года назад +1

      Hey Anthony...yeah there's a few animators that have worked in all of them. But most specialize, as long as you are passionate and can show that you have the skill to work in any of them it should be no problem.

    Thanks for clarifying Harvey, I have a Questions though, been around my mind for about a few months.
    Questions:
    How do you setup Red9 in maya 2022 version? I've found out that most of the old scripts are not compatible in 2022 version, like a-tools, everytime I close maya I have to drag the a-tools again on to the scene, I tried to install red9 on maya 2022 but it seems not working.

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  2 года назад +1

      Hey Rex. It might have to do with your preferences folder. Try to close Maya, rename the Prefs folder and re-open Maya. If that doesn't work perhaps you might need to update to a 2022 compatible version of ATools and Red9

    This is was a very good video and kudos for the rigging video as well maybe next video for fans if you haven't already "Experience in creating animation state machines and blend trees in a game engine" I see people asking about it on game sites and linkedin as well.
    This is copied from arkane job description one of my former coworkers just landed a job at Arkane working remote I'm going to ask him how did he manager to get the remote job because alot of times the jobs never mention if it's on site or not. Oh also maybe talk about game industry vs film ahhh based on what yo may know I miss games man lol I'll get back and best wishes for ianimate as well with your class. Plus a recruiter will contact potential candidates and say I have a game you might be interested for realistic soccer all remote and only EA makes soccer and someone else does PES.

      A bit of both. It's mostly to do with the Tech Animation Department and Code. Hope that helps
