  • Whenever a movie introduces time travel into its story, there are going to be questions about the timeline. The Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to set its own rules about time travel in Avengers: Endgame, but some felt like Captain America coming back as an old man at the end contradicted them.
    Thankfully, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have clarified once and for all how time travel works in their films, even if screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely don’t agree. Let’s take a look at the various explanations of how Old Man Cap got back to the main timeline in Avengers: Endgame.

      That and it was a comedy besides, so it wasn’t too worried about staying consistent with its time mechanics.

    Russos makes way more sense and is finally logical. He lived with Peggy until she died and he traveled back to og timeline to say hey to his bros, then he maybe even gets back to his alternate timeline after passing his shield to take care of his kids, if he has some.
    Iam finally little satisfied now.

  • @Microfoot
    @Microfoot 5 лет назад +182

    So the Russos' explanation is exactly what I thought happened. I would've thought most people would realize this considering Tony and Cap were able to travel from 2012 to 1970 without having to return to 2023 first.

      For me, it was either this happened or old man Cap was a Cap from an alternate timeline (that so closely resembles our own that for all intents and purposes he’s basically the same Cap as this one) that had been living out the rest of his life in our timeline.
      Though admittedly that would then mean that Peggy was living a double life keeping Cap a secret (or somehow passing him off as someone else) while at the same time heading SHIELD. I’m not sure how believable that would be or not...I’d probably need to rewatch Winter Soldier to remember the finer details of how SHIELD operates to see if that’d be feasible.

      I believe it is two caps in one timeline as a result of a different timeline.
      Steve Rogers gets frozen in ice after defeating red skull. 70 years later he wakes up in New York and goes through the events leading up to endgame. At the end of endgame cap is sent back in time to after the war and lives he’s life as a normal man with Peggy. Having the knowledge of the future the only thing cap does is makes sure his living relatives are not near and danger zones. Knowing when and where the rest of the avengers sent him back in time he travels there and meets with Hawkeye

      If Stan is old man cap... And that's the purpose for his cameo...then it wasn't something mcfeely or the Feige created, or the brothers that messed up mcu... And you gotta wonder who the genius behind marvel is... Because Feige and mcfeely have been in marvel since 2007, but Stan lee has been a marvel cameo since the 80's... He rocked marvel movies that weren't mcu... His role would still makes sense as a time traveling cap, if you considered him in the amazing Spiderman cameos... But those were not the same people. Here’s a theory.... after returning the stones, he went and got with Peggy. Explained that he’s from the future and just enjoyed his life with her. She maintained her life as if she had found a new love in order to not upset the timeline. Cap was a part of that timeline the whole time. He just went back to the point where he crashed into the ice, and lived with Peggy until the events of Endgame. Doesn’t affect anything in the timeline... he’s a superhero so he technically could live that long. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Not really that hard to digest if you don’t over think it. Peggy kept that secret, even from the Cap in the snow. He wouldn’t put it together, because it wouldn’t become an idea to him, until he has to go back in time. Cap created his own time loop. THATS why he gave the shield to Sam. 🤫

      That part was explained though. Time travel automatically creates alternate timelines instead of retroactively affecting the time traveler’s present. The “past” Thanos that traveled to the main timeline’s present came from an alternate timeline, and so whatever happens to him has no bearing or connection to the main timeline’s Thanos.

      I don’t understand how Cap returned the stones to each timeline, but he never resurfaced back to his own reality first, 2023. It’s like he went back to 2014, then 2013, and then 2012, but wouldn’t he have just been going back to that specific futures’ past, and not the past where they acquired the infinity stone? They says there there are alternate realities and timelines, but he is able to go back and return the stones, to each specific reality? When he came back as well, he didn’t return to the quantum machine, he appeared on a bench. Understanding the quantum realm is very difficult.

Meaning that while the young Cap is still fighting Loki, and 2023 Cap time heist-ing with Tony and Scott, old Cap are sitting somewhere at home and not involved in any of the actions so that he did not disrupt the future. He lived somewhere until 2023 and went to the lake (walking, driving etc not time heist-ing) to give Falcon his shield. The question is that from which Cap did he get the shield and how that timeline Cap be able to fight without the shield lol

I mean Loki stole the space stone, even by fixing it there still happened sth else, I don't think those realities just "disappear" by giving back the stones. I understood it more like they just need the stones to keep their new reality safe.
    Also I don't think Cap existed multiple times in the main timeline. If Cap existed twice in the main timeline, it would mean the main timeline is already a changed timeline. There had to be a start with all the time travelling though.

    _________________________
    It’s obvious that the filmmakers are correct about the film. But consider the foolishness of refusing to accept this *simple and clear premise.* If you can go back to the past of your own timeline - then it follows that anyone who then travels to the future - would also be in the future of that timeline....since there is nothing preventing you from traveling to the future to begin with. Fine. In that case why not go back to the past... and then grab anyone in history and bring them forward to the future. For example Steve Rogers could easily go back to 1945 get Peggy Carter - *from the main timeline* - and then come back thru the Quantum bridge with her to 2023. Why not? For that matter - why not get Tony Stark and Bucky and Natasha and Abraham Lincoln and make them all alive and young and whole again? If it is possible to travel to the past in your own timeline - then it must be possible to travel back to the future in the same timeline. Therefore any *dead person* from the past - can be brought back to the future. *This makes a complete nonsense of any story that you would ever attempt to tell.* The Russo’s have figured this out -> those who disagree are just being LAZY FILM WATCHERS. They are clearly *not thinking* about the logical consequences of what they are saying.

The script is mostly like a guide and the director has a lot of say on where the movie goes so if a director thinks something works better in the performance then on the page, then they might go with that over the script. Stuff like ad libs and just flubs make it into movies all the time that weren't in the script. Heck the first and the last time Tony stark says "I am Iron man " they were both are ad libed and not in the script.

    Why does everyone forget the conversation with Bruce about time travel? I always took the Ancient Ones explanation about the infinity stones to be bad realities that will be created. Because if removing a stone and returning resets that reality, then what happened to Loki in the 2012 timeline? Or Gamora from the 2014 one? Heck you can go so far to say that if Cap returns the stones to 2014 and it resets the timeline, Thanos never came to 2023 and Stark would be alive. The writers explanations keep making it more complicated. What the directors say about Cap makes the most sense to the time travel theory presented in the film. Really hope they clear this up in the Disney Plus series.

      This concept of different timelines, the terminator series does it, it seems to be working for their franchise. Waiting to see if the Star Trek franchise will use it. There were still two Steve Rogers existing at the same time in time no matter if it was an alternate timeline or the main timeline because Steve Rogers went back in time to a time that past Steve Rogers was still frozen in ice.
    If things were to progress in the alternate timeline in a similar manner to the original timeline (and I don't see why they wouldn't) then past Steve Rogers frozen in ice is going to be revived around the same time as it occurred in the original timeline and then you'll have two Steve Rogers running around even in the alternate timeline.
    So, no matter which scenario you used (alternate timeline or main timeline) there are still going to be two Steve Rogers existing in one timeline.
    There is no way of escaping that fact because Steve Rogers is going back in time to a time where his past self is frozen in ice.
    Steve Rogers going back in time does NOT cause his past self that is frozen in ice to cease to exist.

      @@SupportGamin2024 says: *exactly what don't these dumbasses understand?*
      There's also another point that I'd like to make...
      How were the Infinity Stones returned to the main timeline (which is what needed to be done) if alternate timelines were created in the first place?
      Unless everything occurs in the main timeline the movie doesn't make any sense.
      Professor Hulk stated in the movie that you can't change the past when you go back in time because the past becomes your future, there is a simple way to explain this without the need for alternate timelines to be created for a solution to the problem.
      If you actually changed the past (which didn't happen in the movie as Professor Hulk stated) you would cause the alteration of memories even to the person doing the time traveling.
      The person doing the time traveling would most likely acquire new memories of the actions that he did in the altered timeline while still maintaining his original memories of what he did in the original timeline.
      In the movie it appears that your past self is a separate entity than your future self and based on the rules that Professor Hulk stated in the movie that makes sense.
      So, as it's clearly been revealed in the movie past Gamora and past Loki have now replaced their present selves that are dead in the main timeline's present.
      Past Gamora now exists in the present time in the main timeline and has replaced her present self that Thanos killed in Infinity War.
      As for Loki's past self he likely exists in the present time in the main timeline as well only we don't know the events of what he did leading up to the present yet and they will likely be covered in his upcoming Disney + series.
      Loki also has the past version of the Space Stone which has replaced the now destroyed version of the Space Stone in the present time.
      So, as you can see you don't even need the creation of alternate timelines in the first place, everything can easily play out and be explained as happening in the main timeline, and as far as I'm concerned how I explained it above is exactly how it appears to me in the movie.

  • @GeorgeBailey2
    @GeorgeBailey2 5 лет назад +1

    Two timelines. Two jumps back. First, he lives an alternate timeline with Peggy Carter. Whether he is an active Captain America, who knows? Probably. He saves Bucky, etc, etc. Then he uses Pym particles to go back again and lives a normal life, leaving the original MCU timeline undisturbed.
    Steve Rogers would not age at a normal rate. So, if he only went back once and maintained the original MCU timeline, you would think he would look to be between 45 to 60 (at most), not fully aged.
    Also, Sam was at Peggy's funeral. Presumably, he knew that Steve had, or wanted to have, a relationship with Peggy Carter. For the life Steve lived that left the timeline undisturbed, perhaps he had a relationship with someone other than Peggy Carter. This might be why, after Sam notices the wedding ring and asks, "Do you want to tell me about her?", Steve says, "No, I don't think so."

That Captain America never returned and 2.the one where he walked back to that moment, meaning nothing changes, he gets to live his life and then wait till all the wars happen and then return to the same spot he left, meaning timeline one he never returned and they are continuing without him (original) and the other one where he stayed, he returned back to them when he is older (alternative)

  • @Wezqu
    @Wezqu 5 лет назад +1

    Cap was in an alterantive timeline main reason why, because taking the stones out of a timeline was not the thing that caused another timeline. The moment new timeline was created was the moment someone traveled back from the future as they never were there originally so even their mere presence was enogh to cause a new timeline.
    So many people undestands the Ancient Ones statement of why the stones need to be returned as it would make the timeline go how things happened in the main timeline. This of course is not correct as she clearly states that the stones need to be returned so the timelines where they are taken will not get screwed over as the stones all need to be there to balance the flow of time. If you take one out it would cause huge problems to that timelines reality.
    So there is at least five different timelines/realities to what I remember of the movie. First one is the new original Avengers timeline where Loki escapes with the Tessaract. Second one is Hawkeye and Black Widow getting the Soul Stone. Third one is War Machine and Nebula getting the Power Stone. Fourth one is the new 1970's timeline where Cap and Tony get the Space Stone and Cap most likely stayed in this timeline to live with Peggy after returning the Space Stone there. Fifth is Rocket and Thor getting the Reality Stone. Sidenote the Thanos that they fight at the end is from the third timeline/reality as he uses information from Nebula to find them.

As for Fury, we don't know if Fury knew about Steve, or whether Tony's father ever found out about Steve.
    Certainly, he knew well enough to stay out of, or at least hidden at the funeral. I think it would be hard for Fury not to be aware of someone like Steve. But he would have little to no media output knowing that he would have flagged up on Hydra's radar. Hydra wasn't looking for anyone obscure, only people they considered useful, so any file on Old Steve would have been skipped over as insignificant.

      Correct. The filmmakers explanation of the film makes sense and stands. Any other ‘explanation’ does not make sense and cannot stand:
      *IF YOU GO BACK TO THE PAST - YOU SIMPLY CREATE A NEW REALITY* - The Filmmakers.
      In that reality, Cap could save Bucky, he could therefore prevent Howard Stark from being murdered (by Bucky), prevent Hydra from destroying Peggy Cater’s shield. Etc..

    • @millers8142
      @millers8142 5 лет назад

      maybe he did? and its part of the reality and steve like the writers said was in a time loop. 1) why did hydra rescue and use Bucky and carry him through time? especially if they thought cpt america was dead? why risk his potential rebellion vs anyone else. But if they had privy info cpt was alive and well they sure would as possible leverage against cpt.2) natasha mentions she met WS and survived with a non lethal shot thru the abdomen... unrealistically lucky.Perhaps cpt rescues Bucky. Tells Bucky whats going on and Bucky volunteers to continue infiltrating hydra anyway.Knows who natasha was to cpt and lets her live 3)Why Howard stark would make a death bed video to Tony to help resolve the arc mystery. Why make a video at all? why would he think he wouldn't be around to mentor him? Only dying parents do that. Or ones that may have to leave for the sake of the future.4) Why would WS kill starks on film, he is smarter than that???? Unless it might have been faked and why he tells Tony he remembers the moment.5) Ws knew cpt america wasn't coming back. Knew where he was sitting and nodded with foreknowledge to Sam to take the mantle.6) why create shield at all? Plus its run by howard and peggy only???7) who created the idea for the avengers initiative? Its believe to be nick fury. But nick's own words were "there was an idea". Maybe cpt from the past.

    • @summertyme5748
      @summertyme5748 5 лет назад

      1) Why did Hydra rescue and use Bucky.
      ⬆️ Bucky has been the Winter Soldier - used by Hydra since the comic books. This has never had anything to do with how time travel works in EndGame. Nor do the director’s or writers imply any relationship between Winter Soldier and how time travel works. So this is something you are making up as if - *these were real events which you are free to create fantasy interpretations of which are in no way related to anything seen on screen or intended by any of the creators of the story.* It is the very essence of bad fan fiction. I can just easily decide that Red Skull is Steve Rogers daddy. Please don’t confuse fan fiction with facts based on evidence.

      2) re: Natasha mentions that she met Winter Soldier and survived.
      *So what? She also met and fought him again in Winter Soldier and survived. She says she was shot thru the abdomen while he killed his target with the same shot. What does this have to do with time travel? Nothing.*
      Re: Perhaps cap rescues Bucky. Tells Bucky what’s going on and Bucky volunteers to continue infiltrating Hydra. ⬅️ 😂 😂 😂
      *So much nonsense here. Start with the fact that Cap goes back to 1945, and Bucky murders Howard Stark in 1991. You are implying that Bucky is just playing along, but that includes murder of Howard Stark....or you are implying that Cap waits 50 years before telling Bucky....???* Most importantly you are forgetting that Bucky is a mind controlled slave brain raped by Hydra... so how can Cap *cure him by “telling him what’s going on”???* I mean....WTF??? 😂 You are also forgetting that even in 2019 - Bucky is in mental treatment in Wakanda and only semi-stable? None of what you are saying in point 2 makes any sense. And none of it is *relevant* to the time travel issue at hand.

      Miller: re: 3) Why would Howard Stark make a death bed video to Tony.
      ⬆️ He wasn’t on his death bed. You are implying that he knew he was about to be murdered? But let it happen? You know the whole idea behind this time loop began with the silliness that Cap would go back and no one would know, therefore you would not be changing anything.
      You are now reduced to having everyone knowing that they are in a loop, and allowing themselves.... commit murder, or be murdered, because, well...uh shit, I can’t even explain your bullshit thinking. Anyway, you’ve only illustrated the absurdity of the initial fantasy of 2 Steves living in the past with no on knowing. That didn’t work, even for you. But now everyone knows and just plays along. 😂 Anyway - you can’t get everyone to willingly loop the past so that Steve can go back in time and live his life a second time round and marry Peggy. You are still left with the issue that Peggy must live from 1922 - thru 2016 and die, 7 years before Cap goes back in time. *This is the paradox you are not in any way addressing, while you lead a marry chase thru illogical speculation and pure fan fiction.*

      Coach Butch because he left Mjolnir in 2013, and somewhere in the past, he retrieved an unbroken shield. It really isn't that hard to understand lol Whatever you have a hold of, comes through time with you. He simply had his shield but not Mjolnir. Kinda like when you are carrying two things, and you put one thing down to open a door and you leave it behind, but the other thing you are still holding comes with you. The thing you put down and leave behind stays where it's at. It's that simple lol

  • @zyndeco6659
    @zyndeco6659 Год назад

    Ok, let's figure this thing out. He took 4 viles of Pym particles in 1970, 1 vile = 2 jumps. He and Tony used half of one each to return. Now there are 2 full viles and 2 half used viles.
    There is only supply for 6 jumps now, unless he got more from Hank Pym after he returned from the blip. If he left with only 6 possible jumps, he didn't have the 7th to get back to the original timeline that he left.
    Now concerning old cap, the only way this makes sense is if every movie we watched was the looped timeline where everything was happening for the second time, if Cap successfully did not interfere with history, everything would happen exactly the same. MCU 616 is the branch where cap stayed with Peggy (he would have had to take another vile of PYM particles from 1970 when returning the space stone), I think they are implying that we were watching the looped time from the start with old Cap always there.
    Other options, he could have met America Chavez in his old age, but she can't pinpoint specific dates to jump to, I think.
    Kang is the only one who could make the very same Steve Rogers on that bench be the same that left on that time pad moments earlier. That would be one hell of a cameo somewhere in the Kang story coming up.
    Now, where old Steve got that brand new shield from is a mystery for sure.
    PS, The Russo's are wrong on one point, to get back to the prime (original) timeline, there MUST be a return pad /device used. This pad or return apparatus must be initially programmed from the prime timeline beforehand, this is consistent throughout the entire MCU whether it's Antman's van or a quantum time pad. Old man Cap couldn't just appear. You also MUST be wearing a Quantum Suit; he was in street clothes! All of the MCU (IS) that branched timeline.

    In the DC universe superman cartoon where toyman blast the man of steel with a "tachyeon" ray gun and sent him into a dystopian future, Savage, who screwed the balance of the universe asked for supermans help by sending him BACK into the past to stop Savage from doing so. When asked why not just send himself back in the first place, savage mentioned that, and i am paraphrasing, anyone in the present timeline cant both exist in the same period due to the grandfather theory. But superman LEFT that timeline to go Forward in time hence he does not exist from that point forward. Savage sends Sups back, stops present day savage from screwing with the universe and when the camera pans back to Dystopia Savage, the scene changes from dark and desolate to pristine and full of life and he exclaimed something i cant really remember. I believe an opposite of this theory is used for Captain America however he would have to lice a complete life of solitude never to interfere with whatever he had NEVER done in the time from the past till Endgame. Its all pretty far fetched but come on, professor hulk and Magic. What else CANT be possible?

    I’m with the Russos. Their explanation makes more sense. It aligns with Hulk and the Ancient One’s explanations. When you go to the past, your actions don’t change anything that has already happened in your timeline, but it does create a new branch timeline. So when cap went to that time and lived the rest of his life with Peggy, he has already created a new timeline where he and Peggy got married. But idunno. Maybe they’ll retcon this or make this more clear in future films. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

    I think its the Russo's one. Cap does not age normally. So he wouldn't look that old if he was in the same MCU timeline. So he would have to come from an alternate time line and that too from the future in that timeline.

    The Endgame Shield Paradox:
    One major plot hole no ones talking about is the shield cap gave to Sam Wilson. It was completely intact. However he didn’t take his broken shield back in time. Now he also ended up in the exact same timeline as ours, by which I mean the normal one. So where did he get the shield from??? His original shield went with his younger self into the ice and is now in pieces. And he didn’t take it back in time with him even if it was repaired in Wakanda.
