And if that is the case when cap went to vormir to return the soul stone what could have been the scenario? If you think the timeline doesn't make sense, that's because it hasn't been fixed yet. Cap returns the Soul stone before Black Widow sacrificed herself, which lead him to battle the Red Skull though time and space. A bit like the Cap/Skull Cosmic Cube saga, which may have lead to Caps ageing somewhat. He may have fought Arnim Zola in the 70's when he returns the Space Stone, causing the evil scientist's demise and slowing down Hydra's take over of SHIELD. The other Stones are replaced without changing the time lines too much. However the death of the past Thanos and his army in 2019 causes time ripples where he doesn't collect the stone in the first place. Thus alerting a future antagonist Kang the Conqueror to the Age of Heroes, kicking of the next phase of MCU. Nuff said.

the whole point is he couldn't make any changes. If he made any changes he would have created a branch universe by knowing the effects of the future, spinning it off from the main timeline, which wouldn't have actually stopped anything happening because it still would have happened in another timeline. The only way to minimise the branching would have been to cause as few changes as possible. If it's already been written he couldn't change it.
