Thanks for watching. I finally figured out why this Toro mower's self propel didn't work like it's supposed to. But the problem was so extensive, that the only solution was to replace it instead of repairing it.
This video was perfect. It was my exact mower and I followed every step. The only snag I ran into was gears were so run down that when I attempted to unscrew the nut on the pulley, the gears inside the housing would turn but not the shaft like u showed. I had to get inside the housing of the gears and wedge something in there so the nut would loosen. Thank you so much.
no problem and thank you Gary Alioto
Gary........I'm having the same problem. I'm glad you posted this. I'm going to try to wedge something inside the housing like you did. Do you happen to remember what worked for you?
I have this same model. Same issue with the transmission. Got new one. Installed everything correctly. Wheels didn't move forward. I made sure gears were installed in the right direction. * head scratch * I took the whole thing apart again, looked at the transmission gears and compared with old one. The FACTORY INSTALLED THEM BACKWARDS!! Now trying to discern whether to return or reorient them myself.
I'd return it.
"Borrow the cheap set," we haven't even drank a beer together yet and you already know me well.
lol... nice man.
"and they'll let you borrow the cheap set" I got my belly laugh for the day. Thanks! That transmission was very economical in my book. Some of the newer (and non-serviceable) ones have set me back upwards of $100US
Congratulations on your 1k subs! Glad you enjoyed it, and yes some them are over $100, I almost certainly I would have passed at that price point.
Yeah I looked at a few and seen over 100$ price tags for certain model transmissions which in that case if the mower don't cost much buy a decent used mower , harbor freight has cheap die and tap sets so that's an option too not sponsored... lol just if you need something like that and don't want to spend hundreds on a kit harbor freight got you covered or if you knew the size just buy the single tap for well probably close to 20$ maybe less
Thank you for finally telling us that you are working on a FRONT wheel drive Toro, at 1:05 into your presentation. Perhaps, some of it may apply to REAR wheel drive Toros?
Nice 22 inch mower with a Tecumseh engine which I really like their fuel economy when compared to other engine manufacturers.
that's the second time I've heard about their fuel economy, I'm going to have to look into that. thank you Rick Thelian
Where are the shields for wheeles? They go on before gears
they're here somewhere.
Does the transmission come pre filled with a lubricant? If not what do you fill it with? From my research the correct grease that goes in the from the manufacture is about $50 a tube from Peerless
yes they come pre-filled otherwise there would have been a tag stating to fill it before using it. They also would have included a bottle of the lube.
@@HomeGaragechannel thank you, going to work on my replacement today!
If you would have rebuilt the transmission, what type of grease would you have put back in the gearbox?
that's a tough one. My choice would be based on the grease that was already in it, which looks like a high temp grease for bearings. I don't think it's 90w .
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks! I have kinda of the same transmission on my mower and wanted to "maintenance it" and put new grease in it.
that's a great idea.
My 49cc dirt bikes won't start and I have put
a new carburetor on it
please confirm that it has spark, and if it does, then you'll need to get a compression tester and see if it's low.
Yes it spark
Which mower is better with the transmission in the front or the rear?
I believe it to be in the rear, also it seems like cheap mowers with self propel have fwd while the more expensive ones are rwd.
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks! I’m looking to purchase a lawn mower this off season. I have a ride on mower but looking for a self propelled one to add for next mowing season
good luck to you. Do you have a preferred brand in mind?
@@HomeGaragechannel Honda . Have heard many good things about them
absolutely, as long as they have the correct amount of Oil, and is changed every year, they will last a long time, Also just as with any brand of mower, make sure you stay away from gasoline that has ethanol in it.
I always wanted to see what these transmissions look like on the inside. Thanks for another interesting video.
No problem!
I had a Toro lawnmower and I replaced the transmission. My transmission also cost around $60. I was not able to do it in 11 minutes but I did finish the job. With everything you did, I thought, I did that also. Have good days!
thank you Buddy Reed for the comment.
Well done! I typically replace those and the lawn boy insight transmissions. Make sure to replace those missing dust covers for the wheels. Otherwise, the wheels will accumulate debris and add extra stress to the wheels and transmission.
Good tip! I'll get them soon. thank you Riley Sindt.
Good fix for that price, thanks
No problem Waterman One.
Did the new transmission come prefilled with fluid? Ever found out how much and what kind it takes?
yes it was prefilled. It looks to be heavy grease.
With a nice mower like that I would replace the transmission. For 60 bucks it will mow a lot of grass. Learned from the video. Thank you 👍
Great point and thank you Ludvig Tande.
I would have replaced the transmission just like you did… toro is a good Quality Mower …
my thoughts exactly. thank you Keith Miller
Great job however it looks like it really needs the HOC plate bearings replaced, they look completely wiped out. The input pinion gear always looses the black coating and gets a little grooved as it breaks in, it’s actually not worn badly it’s just formed to the ring gear. The bronze output shaft bushings are usually the only thing you need to replace on these to restore contact between the ring gear and the pinion gear. I found them somewhere for only a few bucks each and bought a bunch of extra ones since I used to make this repair on Toro and LawnBoy gearboxes all the time. Don’t see these great old ones much anymore, mostly just the newer Recyclers and LawnBoys with the sealed plastic gearbox.
you're absolutely right. There's a bit more that's worn out that just the transmission.
Hello Home garage how are you today I agree with you I would fix it but front wheel drive on a lawn mower the wheels wear out faster than the rear-drive ones
yes you are correct, I think these might be replacement.
Those bushings $5 ea at dealeri would have fixed original one. $20 plus time
Another excellent vid!!! Don't know if I would have gone to the lengths you did,but none the less,I thank you for a very educational video for sure!!! Keep them coming!
it was definitely just an exercise, if it was more expensive, I wouldn't have bothered.
@@HomeGaragechannel
In any case, you did a stellar job.
I tried it but it was not successful yet, that washer that you didn't see during disassembly I didn't find either. Not sure if it was there or I lost it. Also, my keyways were too small for the slot in the new transmission shaft. A trip to the hardware store in the future. For my 2007 model the transmission was $94.94. I'm going to keep trying but really need to find a schematic of my mower and a parts list. It looks like the gears can be switched (as they have L & R on opposite sides) to the other side which will allow them to wear evenly.
I hope you get it going again
Ha! Finally some one else smart enough to save old gasoline for cleaning! I have been telling people this for years!
Good job on the repair, those old Toro's are well built and worth saving.
Wise practice cutting the thread chase before letting one of those old Taptite's bust off on there. Those are near impossible to get out when the break on you.
thank you Chargero, I didn't want to make this a video on how to remove a broken bolt because the threads weren't there.
Keep up the amazing videos!! I have learned so much from you.
Thank you! Will do!
I know this is an older video so maybe you won’t see this comment…I had a customer return a mower I sold them, a toro recycler with Briggs engine, and told me the self propel wasn’t working. I replaced the belt, checked the transmission and adjusted the cable. You know what the fix was? The guard was blocking the pulley from fully engaging. You ever seen that? I bent the holes and made the guard move a little forward to fix it.
not sure if had but that was a good catch.
I rebuilt a transmission on a Craftsman mower about 35 years ago. At that time, I think everything came in a kit. I think I still have the leftover gear oil that came with it. On another video, you mentioned a second channel. What is it so I can subscribe?
fantastic it's Inside House Garage.
I bought a Husqvarna 125B from a garage sale runs it fine but just vibrates a lot I checked the impeller it looks fine do you have any suggestions
check the impeller for missing fins.
Great fix and showing how to replace transmission. If it was my personal machine I would try to fix it as you did. However, if I was going to sell it I probably would just sell as a push mower. Not sure how much money I could make after the purchase of the transmission etc. But should be a great mower for someone now. Thanks for the video.
Great point! thank you D Butler
When i try to spin my pulley on my rwd it doesnt even spin and like the transmission is locked up and one rear wheel locks ul when i i pull the mower backwards and i cant even get the drive pulley off what do i do
not sure. I'd ask someone close by for help.
Good video and explanation.
Glad you liked it!
I need a self propelled mower now due to mobility issues so I would go with the new transmission.
good choice!
Can you diable the transmission? Like just take ot off and push
you can, but I wouldn't
If you had a machine whit dirty oil and it doesn’t show on the stick. would you still run it or fill it up whit new oil ( if my spelling is bad im sorry)
for testing yes just add some more oil till full, then when you know it's going to work, I would then change the oil
If yoy clamp drive handle before putting cover on they will self align
you are correct
While I appreciate the video, I regret buying a new transmission and taking this thing apart. With the help of the video, I was able to do everything until I had to loosen the nut attached to the pulley. It was impossible to loosen and I've tried wedging tools etc. in the housing to get it loose. I've wasted almost two hours trying to get this nut off. At this point, I'm thinking about just returning the $60 transmission and settling on this just being a push mower until I'm ready to take the plunge to purchase a new mower. Even if I do find a way to separate this nut from the pulley (which seems impossible), there is no guarantee that this new transmission will fix the problem. As you contemplate whether or not to take on a repair like this, you have to make a decision if it's worth your time and money to repair a mower that's over 10 years old. There is nothing wrong with the video & it is definitely helpful, but from my experience, repairs like this never seem to go smoothly and can cause more frustration than it's worth. Thanks for the video.
sorry you're having a tough time with the nut. I've never come across one that was a paint to remove before
@@HomeGaragechannel Update: I managed to get the nut off by wedging a chisel inside the transmission housing. I think it was a 1 inch chisel. Luckily my brother had a better drill (time for me to upgrade) and the two of us were able to do it fairly quickly working together. Thanks to your video, I was able to piece everything together. The bolts self tapped into the housing nicely with a nut driver. I had the drive gear reversed on one of the wheels and a retaining clip popped off. Luckily it was stuck inside the wheel guard. I didn't notice it was reversed until the wheel was stopping and starting. After that was fixed, the new transmission worked like a charm. As long as the $60 transmission holds up and the lawnmower keeps working, I guess it will be worth it in the long run. Thanks again.🍻
If the transmission was at a great price at less than $100 like in this case I would have replaced the trans to get the self-propelled working again as well if the mower was in good condition, great video!
thank you WildeFox
Thanks for a great video! What was the white liquid that you put on the axle?
thanks, it should have been lithium grease.
It would have been easier to remove the drive pulley before taking the wheels off 😊
probably
I have a toro 22" personal pace rwd mower that the wheels will free spin in the air all day long, but it stalls out on the ground. It also feels more difficult to pull backward and makes a little noisethan i feel it should, but this is my first personal pace mower, so it may be normal. I've tried adjusting the cable, but there is no change. Any idea what it could be?
the transmissions on the personal pace versions, don't normally wear out but It can happen. Also have you "serviced" the drive gears? If you adjust the drive cable and it doesn't work, then you'll need to replace the belt because it's worn out. basically the belt is not grabbing the pulleys anymore
@HomeGaragechannel yes I serviced the ratcheting mechanism cleaning all the old grease and applying new I also took some time and changed the grease in the transmission it looked ok but changing it can't hurt and the self-propelled cable has been adjusted. I was leaning towards a belt but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks for the help!
nice thorough work and no problem.
I’ve got a old Stanley self propelled the shaft adapter that hold pulley how I get that off
I'd use a pulley puller
I would love to do this as a hobby
Where do you get all these broken engines
the free sections of all the Large online markets. you can probably guess at least 2 of them. Sorry I'm supported by either one, so I'm not going to mention them by name.
What is thee most modern mower that you own, well the newest
I recently got a 3 yr. old Cub Cadet mower and I hate to say it, even with it's overseas engine, it's actually a decent mower.
Good fix. Free + $60. I would have fixed it too.
that's what I thought too. thank you HK K
If me I would also replace the shaft bearing at this time, good video anyway.
Replacing the transmission doesn't seem worth it to me. IDK what your plan is for this mower, but if it were me I'd have to sell it. With a working trans, it's probably worth about $100 maybe $120. Alternatively you could rip out the trans and sell it as a regular push mower for about $50-70. With that in mind, by the time you spent $60 on the trans, you broke even, and that doesn't account for the time and work you put into it. Then again, if this was going to be your personal lawn mower, $60 for a good self propelled lawn mower is a great deal!
you're absolutely right about the pricing, I'm exactly sure what I'll do with it but I'm not going to use it, as I prefer the mower I have now.
I would change the transmission.
thank you Nabeel Lughmani.
i probably wouldn't have replaced the transmission. most times the math doesn't make sense. what would it be worth if you had sold it as is vs spending the $50 on a new transmission. most time the value only goes up by the cost of the parts and you loose money or make very little on the labor which most times just doesn't make sense.
you make a good point. 60 before replacement and 100 after. looks like you're right.
@@HomeGaragechannel the only thing i will sometimes spend money on is buying a used mulching bag. most of the time you can pick up a used one for about $20 and it will help increase the value by $40-50 on a good machine. also for some reason i find machines that have the mulching bag seem to sell quicker and easier.
oh nice to know that, thank you.
Since you doing labor. Yes you do the right thing. Push are so outrageous today. I remember when you could get a push mower for $75 dollars. Now they are about $300 to & 500 dollars. Great job 👏
thank you The Dronz Dr , things certainly have changed.
I said to shim it in the previous video but with all that wear it wouldn't work very well
no it didn't
@@HomeGaragechannel I seen you said to replace the grease in the transmission well when I did mine I didn't have grease on hand so I added oil in it and mixed it to thin the dried out grease just for now and to have some lubricant in there lol temp fix wish it had seals and took gear lube
My Toro had the same issue. I was going to replace the transmission. When I went to disassemble it I found the woodruff key and spring on the axle had been replaced by a square steel sheer pin and welded in place. Apparently the production line had run out of them and decided to keep the line moving. That soured me on Toro, however I just disabled the transmission and push it. Fourteen years later I'm still pushing it so I'm not so sour on Toro.
wow, I had never heard that but it makes sense .
I've had TORO products for 25 years, with ZERO problems with lawn mowers and snow blowers etc. Replacing this was the right move.
thank you Stormin Norman
I would replace the transmission,I know that my manager got fired when he was 59 years old by a couple of Walmsleys who owned the power tool repair company in 2002.
The thing is that they were trying to tell me to do things such as put the old transmission back in as is so I left my boss after I finished my apprenticeship & his partner in business sold his half of the business, they were both the same as each other !
wow that's amazing.
Yup. What I just said, in the previous vid. Wait for used parts. But that new transmission adds value to the mower.
So when selling, it should get a fair price for the amount of work you've put into it. Appreciate the demo on the self propel system.
thank you Robert Lee.
Those Toro Transmissions are not that good, I have seen them go out often,
I know, this one happened to be on sale, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
@@HomeGaragechannel last 3 Toros I have. Gotten all had transmission problems
1st- I freed up with penetrating oil (axle was stuck from dirt and being left outside)
2nd I swapped the box and wheels from parts deck and greased up the box and it came back to working good enough.
3rd - newer one it moves forward fine but rolling backwards I think the plastic RWD gears having issues. It should be metal not plastic. For the RWD, FWD is fine to be plastic. Not RWD.
wow, you've had a lot of experience with them.
@@HomeGaragechannel Yah this year . It seemed that almost every mower I have gotten has been toro or lawnboy by toro.

B&S quantum
B&S new OHV

Tecumseh
No Briggs classic so far this year.
Those classic ones you can’t kill

Hi, I always watch your great how to videos, but I have an echo handheld leaf blower that dies when on idle but stays running when you give it throttle. What could be wrong with this? Thanks
hello Zach Coughlin, I'm going to guess that the carb is beginning to have trouble delivery the right amount of fuel. Either you can slightly increase the idle speed so it doesn't die, or you can replace the carb.
You got a good price on that new transmission. Need some heavy oil in the engine. It has some bearing wear.
yes does sound that way.
If I was giving it away I would have made sure that it was running well and not worry about the transmission. However, if I was looking to make a profit, I would take the price of the transmission in mind to see if it was still profitable bearing in mind the overall condition of the mower. Great video explaining the removal and installation.
thank you Mario Cestra.
Question, does the engine knock in person like it does on camera? It sounds like it may throw a rod soon.
there is faint knock, but it's not going to throw it anytime soon.
Just be sure to buy another brand.
will do.
Thanks to your video, I ordered a new transmission, and my 20 year old Tecumseh engine mower is running like new. Much appreciated!
no problem thank you victorsem99
No need to borrow a tap, those bolts are self tapping. I've replaced more Toro transmissions than I can even remember. The front wheel drive ones are a lot easier than the rear drive ones.
thank you dave011679
Great drive replacement vid. Do you resell a lot of repaired equipment if you get too many? It's always good for a beer money and new parts. Cheers
Sometimes but I usually keep most of them.
This is one of those videos where it looks sooooo easy.
I’m already a bloody mess with it only half apart.
That pulley won’t be easy if the gears are shot.
yes this video makes it look easy
Don’t you have to replace the sealant when putting the transmission box back together?
no otherwise there would have been a tag that said that it needs to be filled
Nice repair done right there. Purchasing the new trans nailed it and would be a good selling point too. Cheers mate. 🦘🇦🇺
thank you Tyrone Clarke
Did this exact same thing a few days ago. I didn’t have a tap so just ran em in. It looks a lot easier on the Fwd.
thank you J G.
Thank for a well done video. I just replaced my. Yesterday
Glad it helped
Hi I am India
I like your video
hello Siva Shankar.
thank you, I appreciate it.
I agree with you man, I would search for a used parts mower. I'm fortunate to have a used mower junkyard business near me and could probably find a transmission. But if I couldn't I would buy a new one. $60 is not a bad price for a new transmission. Nice video and hopefully you can get about $110-$120 out of that mower.
hopefully so, but I don't have a problem giving it away to someone in need.
@@HomeGaragechannel it’s good to be generous but just be careful who you give it to because they might not be in need and just want a free mower.
I recently did the same thing on what appears to be the very same model. The old transmission was shot, housing damaged, etc. Make sure to get the right part number! There's another one that looks the same but is for the rear-drive model and the wheels rotate the opposite direction. I've also seen a difference in the pulley diameter, not sure if that is a model year change or front/rear drive difference, but the belt size needs to match obviously. My one-owner mower has the same pulley as yours in the video.
The Toro website has good information, I was able to provide the model and serial number and then download manuals. The only problem I had was getting details about the transmission internals from my local Toro parts supplier. They were able to access more details than I could (dealer access) but did email me an image or two that helped a lot in deciding to replace the entire transmission and axle assembly.
Oh, and I used my mower as a push mower until fixing it... It's a heavy mower, unless you're cutting a smooth level yard I don't recommend it! The self-propelled drive helps a lot on slopes and uneven terrain.
thank you Bob Blum for all the information. I appreciate it.
@@HomeGaragechannel You're welcome!
Great video, I believe that I would have waited for a parts mower like you said.
thank you James Peek
One reason why I never buy self propelled mowers
so you've only every bought and used push mowers?

The trans without threads was a zero issue, I barely put pressure with my socket and drove the bolt in, super easy.
Great mowers but the transmissions are so poorly designed… I’ve been down that road twice with transmission replacements.
I know, I don't think I'll be doing this job again
The $15 dollar Re-store Snapper tranny was full of leaves when I got it so I cleaned it out and greased it back up with 00 Snapper grease but the pinion was worn out just as tours was. I ordered another pinion because it would lock up and have to be rolled forward every time the mower stopped moving. With a new pinion it has done just fine ever since. The housing and the side shafts have some slack but with the 00 grease, everything is close enough. The n85 model of course has some wear but the 00 grease takes care of that too. So I'd do as you did and fix the drive. Thanks nd Blessings!
thank you for the information
@@HomeGaragechannel It's good stuff and was named Snapper 00 grease originally.
I wonder if they still sell it
@@HomeGaragechannel You can still get the 00 grease but not have the Snapper name on it. I really like it because it's between a stiff grease and an oil. Snapper used it in all their trannys, both walk behinds and riders and maybe tillers too.
