Fixed a mates mower as it locked the drive wheels when pulled backwards. I looked for ages at the problem and sorted out the issue. The Spring was missing from the frame to the gearbox. Easy fix. Great videos mate.
Thanks for taking the time to explain this drive problem. Although I have a problem with a Honda (Lousey support, demanding money for workshop manual etc., ) what you have shown is almost the same..Thanks for you time and effort

Cracking video matey, Just got a Cobra self propelled that wont pull, If you lift it up the wheels will spin but on the ground it just makes a clicking noise. I'm going to check the pulleys are free first. That's as far as I'm at.... Thanks again. Dan.
Great video. Took the wheels off and dropped the axle out of my old titanium 5145hw today to fix the self drive. The spring was missing. Tried a spring I found but now to tight the box doesn't move. Going to have to try and find the correct spring. Keep up the good work.

Hi, I have a similar setup on my Makita lawn mower. The wheels actually turn when I engage self drive, but it just doesn't have power. It used to climb up the hill with no issues. Now it struggles on any incline. Any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks Phil for your very helpful video , I have a Qualcast 46cm which the self propelled has stopped working, when I took of the plastic belt cover off one side of the plastic pulley has completely worn away, I then found the this pully doesn't align up to the pulley behind the blade which would explain the pully beside the gear box being competely worn away to one side . Have you any idea please what the cause can be, I wondered if this misalignment could have been there since new and its took all this time to wear the one side of the pully away.
Thanks for this I have the makita palm 4601 and thE self drive wasn't working I noticed a spring had come loose and the tension rod was missing got the spring back on now the mower does move but need bit more tension on the belt.
How spooky is that. I have a self propelled champion that the drive is engaged all the time. Now I have a much better idea what I'm looking at. Thanks brilliant and timely video.👍
Really helpful, have just bought a Qualcast petrol & the drive wheels won't action when the lever is pulled, but the lever is very tight, so I'm thinking my first port of call is to clean all the crud out as it may be interfering with the action of the little lever as in your video?

Great Video Mowerman my problem is on my McCulloch 40-50 cdpr great little mower but the other day i ran over some "wood chippings" thus causing the self propel to stopworking when i looked underneath a wierd shaped spring had come loose and was hanging.I cannot see where the spring has come from as i'm hoping that is causing the lack of drive hope you can enlighten Brian.
Hi mate. Looking for bit of advice on this. Have a Husqvarna self drive with similar mechanism. Have replaced the belt and retensioned cable. When you pull the handle, the belt tightens on a pulley which drives one of these transmission boxes. It's good enough to drive the back wheels when I lift mower up of ground but as soon as it's on it's own weight, the mower isnt being propelled. The drive shafts to each wheel are just spinning with no drive? I swapped both rear wheels over as one is alot more worn than the other (no threads on tyre) and I got full drive back for a minute. But now it's gone again! Any ideas?
Thanks! Have a Q if you have time. My transmission are the same and my Q is about why it has to be leaned forward or backward? Also my transmission box had oil in it half full. Something is wrong inside the box and the axle goes very heavy and it can not leave the drive-mode, it always spinning the wheels.
My newer Troybuilt front drive mower stopped working. I took the cover off the gear box and replaced the 1/8 inch pin that slides inside the gear. I had an older Murray mower in my parts pile that had the same gear box. Just took the pin from there and put it is the Troybuilt. Guess they don't make that part anymore. My self propelled is working again. The pin looks like a shear pin you might find in a snowblower arbor shaft.
Yet another great video thanks I like how very detailed you go into all your videos. I have only been buying and repairing mowers a short time but at a standstill a the moment due to the virus lockdown. If I could just ask you a quick question please, I picked a mower up the other day I put a new diaphragm and gasket on carb but when I prime it , it pulls the fuel through but then after a few pumps it stops pulling the fuel through could this be the primer bulb although I can’t see anything wrong with the bulb thanks for your time..stay safe
At the back of the carb there should be an o ring and an o ring shaped clip that holds it in place, sometimes these can fall out and could cause your priming problem.

The transmission does work but the metal transmission barely moves and the handlebar lever attached to the lever is VERY difficult to pull.) Before I open the transmission, is there an obvious fix? The cable and springs are perfect. THANK YOU for any suggestions!
Awsome vid mate!! I have a problem with that the lever is stuck in the transmission. So the selfpropellant cant be turned off. Do i need to take it apart, or is there a trick that involvs knocking with a hammer until the clutch/plate that connects the gear loosens?? Thanks for a really nice vid !

The coc doesn't turn when the shaft is turning, I can turn the cog by hand and it doesn't turn the shaft, so something is wrong with the connection of the shaft to this cog. I am guessing that there is a a drive gear on the end of the shaft that communicates internally with the wheel drive cog. Am I correct? If so does this mean that I need to replace the drive shafts and the wheel drive cogs? I haven't removed the wheel drive cog to look as it is held with a circlip and I don't have circlip pliers.
