How to Kill Your Game : Enlisted

You've almost certainly played a game that you really loved. One with lots of potential that the developers seemed to blunder it all away. Right now, for me, Enlisted is that game.
I got frustrated watching them start to dig it into the ground so I made this video, if not for Darkflow then hopefully at least for anyone watching who might be an existing or aspiring game developer. I want to talk about good project management game practices, and how you can use them to avoid killing your game.
Damn this is perfect!
The thing Gaijin forgot is the fact that this is an FPS, there are no good alternatives to War Thunder but there are HUNDREDS of good/better FPS alternatives out there

@@Matt-uk7zq yes it WAS pretty good. But those days are sadly long gone

@dkcsi9256 "Oh you wanna buy a new car but dont wanna buy the same one you already got? Have you tried not driving?" Dumbass
God it warms my heart to see that enlisted has the exact same jittery tank “feature” as war thunder. Truly a gaijin moment.
Red Orchestra 2: Less content but is a far superior experience. That involves communication and tactical value while having fun.

It's been a long two years of Enlisted for me, and much of it has been spent complaining about these issues and oftentimes worrying my own experiences in project management are wrong in some way. This video helps soothe a lot of those of those worries, and definitely makes me personally feel a lot better. So thank you for that and thank you for making the video
I've been F2p for 3 yesrs and honestly I learned to expect so little from the game that anything is met with an "Oh, okay" and then move on
I just started its Hella fun I love the kar98 maybe I got lucky
2:30 The second they start charging for in game items it's no longer in beta that's their release I don't care about any argument otherwise.
You've clearly haven't played other ONLINE GAMES that does that. EARLY ACCESS and OPEN BETA games. There's even developers that gives ALPHA access on KICK STARTERs etc..
It's something what you call investment.

@@clodsworth Those only applies to SINGLEPLAYER games and NOT live service games.
LIVE SERVICE games = ONLINE GAMES that supports ONLINE MULTIPLAYER. CO-OP/MMORPG/MOBA ETC..
They have different development process compared to singleplayer games. A live service games requires a community of people to play it. It's better to start early with a small community and grow from there. Some requires payment to support the development process, some don't. Releasing an ONLINE GAME that's fully polished would most likely be dead on arrival.
It's just simple, don't play an online game you don't like even a single game mechanic that you hate out of it. EX. STAMINA SYSTEM/MICROTRANSACTION/PAY TO WIN UPGRADES.

You’re investing into something without any power an investor might have.
If you sell a product we will iudge the product you sell, not the promise of what the product will be.
I have tried this game but after 2 weeks, I just quit. It’s not worth it.
Yes it’s easy to play, and you can immediately play and have some fun. But the reason is because of the lack of players and the number of bots.
I tried it years ago and I loved the whole squad of bots idea, it felt like a good equalizer for less skilled players such as me.
Dropped it cause I can't stand PvP games though lol... seems like I dodged a hail of bullets.
Its main selling point is the bots.
The biggest problem I had was that some campaigns were unbearably unbalanced because some fundamental classes were locked until a higher level. The side without engineers would just lose automatically.
And their AI is simultaneously overpowered and SUICIDALLY RETARDED.
Theres an enemy in a window behind them over 150m away?
They'll do a 180 and flick to his head, instakilling him.
Theres an enemy standing 2 feet in front of them shivving them one by one with a fucking butter knife?
They completely ignore his presence and allow him to KILL THEM ALL.

As someone who comes from the competitive shooter scene, I've had intimate experiences with FPS games since early 00s, and especially WW2 shooters from that fad (and actual WW2 weaponry) I can safely say that Enlisted's gameplay feels fine for about 5min, then all of the problems seep in. Their whole system is fucked from under the hood to start with. It needs some major revamping to get it up to any kind of quality standard.
7:10 - The having bots pretend to be real players seems to be a uniquely Russian/Eastern Europe developer trend.
Indeed, crossout is a big example of this
COD is speculated for using bots as well but thats a little more tin foil hat
World of Tanks/World of Warships has done this for years, but still refuses to admit it

I stopped playing after stalingrad. Glad I did.
They changed the BR system in the game but honestly I still don’t like it
They should have never added heavy tanks
I love masochism. I'm just happy I haven't spent a dime on this and try not to focus on the grind to an item, just the experience. I'm still angry though.
I've been banned for many ridiculous reasons in the past (mostly being accused of cheating), but I can only dream one of them being sowing dissent. That's absolutely hilarious.
Yeah, this is about how my Enlisted experience went. It was fun running around and finding places to hide with bolt action rifles, especially on that eastern front(?) map with the big bombed-out church, but the grind for better stuff and the fact I kept getting mowed down by people who had better SMG squads really took the fun out of it.
I don't think I ever won a round on any front either.
And this is recommended today again.
Best. Intro. Ever!
Not even a fan, just randomly clicked. Legit had me chuckling. 🙏🏻 Imma finish the vid now.
I played one match of this game and immediately noticed the bot issue and then promptly uninstalled. Any game that I install and has bots in the first match I play isn't something I want to waste my time on.
one exception for me being if it's like war thunder where they're trying to stop you from getting seal clubbed instantly
@@diadromes8000
even then, the biggest "competitor" WarThunder has (WOT) uses bots way more than WT does, so it's still the best option if you want a bot-free vehicle combat came.
@diadromes8000 coddling new players doesn't help the community in any way. Not saying they need to be fed to the wolves, but chosing new money over established players rarely works out
Shit take
@ichwill7536 honestly, warthunder does need the extra training wheels when it comes to that. People that have played the game for years will go all the way down the ranks since there's no real matchmaking.
Enlisted is a prime Example of many good Ideas executed in the worst way possible.
The Campaigns were nice and a new idea in the Shooter Genre, but their execution of them were lackluster. Then, the Merge. All they had to do was keep the campaigns but make weapon-progression overlapping, with weapons being available in their respective theatres. Heck, there's a Minecraft Shooter called Call to battle where that's a thing. All Nations have one progression for each player, but you can only use, for example an StG-44 in 1944 theatres. Darkflow apparently can come up with that but rather just made Warthunder 2.0 but with Infantry. Power Creep is also an Issue. While I find it neat to see less Tanks less popular in other WWII Shooters, but Tiger IIs, Super-Pershings, that's just too much. On a personal note, Darkflow actively refusing to accurately model Guns (like the MG-42 having an RoF of 990 rpm at best). It's just sad to see what possibilites Darkflow keeps to throw away for no apparent reason other than prioritizing content that makes money
This right here is what really killed the game for me. And I mainly play as Japan, who you think would be least impacted by it but running into all those out of theater maxed tier vehicles just ruined it for me lol
found a recommendation to this video on reddit. I super love this game except when I don't, and when I don't its actually miserable. Most of my pain comes from the fact that 75% of my team has less than 20 kills
This video should go viral. Very good.
The snail does what the snail does. That is simply its nature.
Tbh, most of this shit monetization policies are not DF's fault, but Gaijin and I have info to prove that
1° Darkflow is a small studio, VERY small (for what I've been told I assume not more than 30 workers, not devs, workers (that including not dev positions like Community manager or forum mods)
Afaik, Darkflow doesn't gain too much money with Enlisted (tbh, that was expected) and Gaijin takes a lot of that money, probably only letting the necessary funding just to maintain DF barely afloat. Also Gaijin basically gave Darkflow the engine to create Enlisted and barely invested resources or manpower at all, the snail only comes to the table to make a new monetization scheme to gain some extra bucks
Basically Gaijin is Using Darkflow as a meat shield, they act in the shadows trying to gain every dollar possible and let Darkflow eat all the hate
Darkflow also has serious problems on Its own
They are stubborn af, basically if they are not forced to change something they don't want, even if that change will have a positive outcome for the Game, They'll not do It
Most likely an incompetent leadership and if not rookie, not a very veteran dev team (if I learnt something of game design is if this kind of shitstorm happens, devs will run away to other companies on masse (remember what happened with the devs teams of Battlefield 2042 and Skull and Bones just to name a few))
Edit: just fixing some typos
Imagine designing your game around bots because you know nobody would ever want to play it.
they did the merge recently right which they said would eliminate the amount of bots you face in a game right....well when they did the merge they also removed campaigns and added a br system lol so lots of people left the game causing you to now see bots who are god level skill usually half the team being bots ...gaijin basically shot themselves in the foot ...they got a bunch of new players sure but they lost a TON of veteran players who liked the game the way it was.
I tried the game a while back, two years ago maybe. It was very clear that almost nobody was playing it and the match was just filled with fake bot players. I mowed down hordes and hordes of squad npc:s and fake players, there was no difficulty, the chat was dead, a completely braindead experience.
It's funny to see this recommended to me so long after being made, and everything you said is still true, even after the vaunted "merge". Every Gaijin veteran could tell you the merge was just a way to increase grind and monetisation.
Started playing a few days ago on xbox series x. Promptly stopped after multiple failed hit detections. I’m talking like 2 foot from an enemy blasting them with a submachine gun and no hits somehow, all whilst enemies able to snipe me across the map, through solid objects like buildings sometimes. All of this in conjunction with the severely heavy monetization and grind. The gameplay feels janky and off, having terrible AI probably the main reason why. The game is absolutely not complete and I do not recommend playing unless you just love Gaijin games or war games that you can overlook the impressive amount of flaws.
I've tried to get into enlisted but i just cant. The game feels janky and the aiming is really weird. And like you said the game is very p2w the grind feels worse than war thunder. I've made it to lvl 10 and it just feels like slog i dont even know how they still have people paying money for it.
I really liked how the rifles one-shot in Enlisted right from the beginning, it felt satisfying to actually feel like my shots were deadly, while not feeling super annoying because you have like 4 other squad members to switch to at any point if you do get hit. But yeah, it did feel like there were a bunch of problems that were never fixed, some of them even got worse!
I tried this game once. The idea seemed really cool. I thought it was would be like a FPS Bannerlord in WWII. Then I found out the bots suck, and it is literally Warthunder where you have to buy or grind to be even remotely competitive. There’s nothing wrong with having cool stuff to unlock in a game, but the game shouldn’t be basically unplayable if you don’t have it, or someone else does and now you lose because they paid money for it.

Enlisted used to be a insane game to play, I used to love it. I came back to it recently and it just wasn't fun with BR's
Given your views on the game being in beta, I'm curious what you have to say about Star Citizen; it's been in alpha for about a decade now, entry level cost to play the game (sorry, "test the alpha") is $45, but they are selling ships and packages that are in the *thousands* of dollars.
Giga like!
In the last two years I try 3 times this game, after 1-2 month I delete. Now I'm in 4th " circle". Maybe, I'd like to add....
The match making directly makes losing streaks:
This is not paranoia or a conspiracy theory. I played many times with WOT, where the MM works similarly to Enlisted. New account get a lot of success, after you've grinded for something, the free game submits the bill. The main source of income for free to play games is your frustration, and this is achieved through losing streaks. I personally consider this a bad business policy.
The brain dead game play support, a.k.a. this is not a "first person shooter":
I don't particularly like tanks and planes. I'm a first person shooter, I don't hide behind armor or throw bombs. I will not "twitch" like an autistic with the an endless supply machine gun or the flamethrower. But this game supports the brain dead, zero skills attitude.
"Well tamed", ex War Thunder players, who pay the price:
Yep.... Beta game, but rest assured, a lot of money has already flowed in. Too many. I was in a "bigger" enlisted community, here too there is a "thick" layer of people who have already paid (and will) pay the price of a broken, old car. The only problem with this is that it won't make Dark Flow to change.
I can only say what many people said two years ago.
"This is a game with great potential...."
But in my mind the Morgen Freeman narrator says, "it will never be good...."
Please be next War Thunder.
It would be so fucking funny.
I suck at the game, but what i do to still enjoy it is just run a sniper build, fuck off to some high spot, and just get like 30+ kills per round while accomplishing basically nothing worthwhile for my time. However, its a video game, and theyre all about having fun, which i do
gaijin never listens to their community *unless* the negative backlash affects their bottom line. Have seen it for years with WarThunder already.
It's interesting how Enlisted basically inherited very similar problems to Heroes & Generals, especially the lack of players, lack of a capable bot AI, some abhorrent unlocking systems and the top tiers (usually premium) decimating people because of a lack of a good way to effectively counter bigger vehicles.
I quit this game a bit after stalingrad and gave it a second chance when the pacific came out then quit again a day or 2 later haven't touched the game since
since the new progression tree and stuff is announced now how do you think that will affect the game do you think the game will die
im asking this before i put some serious time in to the game
pls help
I play on ps5, I have fun and mostly enjoy it
Unlocking stuff is much easier now that they removed the campaign
i actually really liked stalingrad when it released, yeah it sucked that you had to pay like 20$ to access the campaign but it wasn’t littered with premiums at the time and it also gave you some early features like soldier customization. i will admit though that there wasn’t lots of unique levels to unlock which made it boring and easy to burn out on.
It’s wild when I would rather play Battlefield V than this
Wanna know the only reason I was reminded this game exists? Because big fry mentioned it taking a day before it was removed from steam.

This was a real filmento ass intro. Loved it!
Ditto. I'm a war thunder vet and I fucking hate it. Enlisted was too much, I liked it for a while but yeah.. What a quagmire
I thought if I should try this game, and now I won't. Thank you, mate!
Raising prices only to lower them for a sale is illegal in most, but not all, US states as well. Pretty much goes unenforced everywhere except California though
I absolutely love how much WT players complain about enlisted while they play the exactly same game but without infantry and with larger tech trees
Regarding the bots: I once won a match of normandy with 265 kills and 0 deaths. Fuck this game.
amazing video with great points!
I could see that from the day the game came out, anything Gaijin touches dies.
I loved playing enlisted on the ps4 like a year ago but when i tried playing it on my pc the anti cheat just kept kicking me from matches, and the forum couldn't provide a good answer. I was able to play warthunder perfectly fine and they have the same anti cheat.
Among all of these issues, i still think the game is super fun and have put so many hours into it
I think you should also mention that you’re a project manager
I stopped playing War Thunder 5 years ago, and the moment I saw Gaijin involved in this I knew not to touch it with a 122 mile long pole.
oh if only you knew what was coming with tarkov.
I hope WarThunder doesn’t have the same fate
In my opinion, in a comparison between warthunder and Enlisted (I've got 1500 hours in warthunder and about 200 in elisted) is that in warthunder, if you don't like playing ships (nobody wants to play naval) you can just not, you don't need to play it to unlock a tank or unlock a plane and you can do whatever the hell you want. the only game mode that relies oin another one is ground and you can just play something like an SPAA or your own plane. The developers of warthunder are absolutely greedy and insane but there's counters, you can just pick to play something else inside the game. They also consistantly engage with the community with things like thundershow and dev QandAs (even though those are so fucking rigged). as a final statement: Gaijin hates italy ;-;
After they botched the steam Linux thing I've just given up. I saw the price for a FREE game and just cut ties with that. Ashame too, enlisted was fun for what it was.
That into had me rolling
The most anoiing thing i encounterd is the grid or when shots dont deal dmg/go somewhere i didnt aim at because the new gun i bought also needs grinding to hit. With that a bold action made me hit more often then an autoload rifle in singel shot 😂
You can even still actully find fun in warthunder
The grind has probobly been halved after the reccent econemy changes
Took me barly 3 days to get the m60 patton
Intro movie?
I miss heroes and generals guys
One thing that baffles me is how Darkflow thought they'd make it by monetizing the game even worse than what Gaijin does with War Thunder
This all is still valid a year after. Fucking great
Excellent video, said it how it needed to be said. This game has taken far too long to have such little meaningless content thrown into it.
How do u only have 28 subscribers 😮
The game is a lot worse now and they tried to put enlisted on steam for 20$ idk how they managed to fail the release of a free game good thing i stoped enlisted
Liked enlisted for awhile, got discouraged after seeing how much I'm missing out without spending money
this game basically did everything possible to kill itself I regret spending money in it
I agree with all of the points made in this video, however, now with the Roadmap I am much more confident in the game, especialy if it releases on Steam it will definetly get a surge of players and the new branch system will make "grinding" waaay less cumbersome. I play the game for free so cant really be mad but if you pay for things in the game you should probably be mad about how unfixed it is.
I used to love playing this game pre merge but once they did the merge and took away the option to pick campaigns I was done
Who is Darkflow? I thought that enlisted was made by the same creators of war thunder aka Gaijin Entertainment.
I've tried it before and thought the bots were normal 😂
Basically try to turn enlisted into warthunder that's what turned me away from it I was gonna try it but i opened it and saw how much I'd need to grind for a little bit of fun and was like nope I already have over 1000 hours on warthunder
all time high "240" yeah it was never alive to begin with
That star wars clip was perfect 🤣

I hope a different developer takes the ideas that Enlisted created and puts them in their own game
Sad that dark flow messed up enlisted on steam since enlisted is a great game
10:49 crazy how it even applies to this very video.
4:25 I absolutely understand. This is horrible game design and greedy bullshit however Pzll my beloved
This describes the game perfectly, good video.
And here I thought Heroes and Generals was THE prime example of how to kill an otherwise promising f2p fps with too much grind and ingame purchases. But compared to enlisted, that game is almost fair to the players.
Me and everyone I played with stopped playing when the campaigns got merged and the tech tree was released. Completely ruined ay sense of progression and we could have fun doing what we wanted, having to souly rely on luck of a match we wanted.
What an opening
If anyone wants an actual good enlisted type games with main thing being infantry there is easy red 2 The planes and tanks aren’t at all as good in the devs defense gajijn Use the copy, pasted assets, and flight models and already based enlisted off of war thunders game engine which is older il2 engine meant for these vehicles
thats what im fucken talking about man good job
You want to jump?!??!?! That's gonna cost 40$
stop playing and they will either listen or burn
Actually glad to not have baught the campaign access pass for Stalingrad, bunch of mostly useless crap now.
Been playing long enough to have everything unlocked in USA and USSR, plus a decent set of premium's...
Sure, there's been changes to the tech tree and such, but honestly been playing a whole lot less recently, as almost every event release lately has heavily favoured the Nazi's... yes including the armoured assault engineers one, tested both squads and while the Nazi helmet works wonders for headshot damage mitigation, but the Soviet body armour is literally useless as it seemingly does absolutely nothing.
Love it.... Not.
They definitely ruined the HMG, honestly refuse to use it anywhere but flat ground and inside, as they're actually weaker than the MG in terms of damage to infantry and cover penetration, since they essentially turned off the HMG armour pen, but more recently seem to have nerfed the damage greatly.
M26 Pershing is nice though, USA been needing a proper tank for Tiger hunting since the day the first Tiger was added *Cough* TOOK EM' LONG ENOUGH *Cough*
i think I'll just go back to battlefield 1
Never played it i was thinking aout getting the game but idk

To me, this also highlights what’s wrong with War Thunder to a degree. Seeing as the only thing keeping War Thunder afloat is probably its appeal to realism, which would kill the game if another game were similar to war thunder in any way.
3:22 this is common in War Thunder
