      A lot of people have asked how much our power bill is with this setup, but since they're all LED's, it literally isn't even noticeable. Great for a home studio!

  • @tombuck
    @tombuck  3 года назад +19

    I should've mentioned in the video that since these are all LED lights, they generate very little heat (if any) and have virtually no effect on our electric bill. In fact, there's no difference in our electric bill with this setup compared to when I started and was using only a desk lamp and ceiling fan light. 💡

    Tom I have watched all of your light setup videos over the years. It is really cool to see how you have upgraded along the process and growth of your channel. If you want to be successful at anything in life you have to invest in it, be it money, time, blood, sweat, and tears. I am in the process of setting up my space to start recording and definitely starting at the budget friendly setup. When it starts to grow and as I can I will be upgrading along the way.

    Hey Tom, great video as always. I spent most of my day fiddling with the lighting in my home studio, and it's the first time I've played with lighting. Your attention to detail really shows in your studio.
    As far as the fan in your key light is concerned, you may be able to upgrade it. I used to build computers, and the best case fans were from a company called Noctua.

      Even though these are all high quality lights now, it definitely didn't start that way. But the idea has been consistent. So where there's a nice expensive PavoTube now, there used to be a $20 RGB floodlight. It wasn't exactly the same effect, but you can still achieve a lot while on a budget.

    The high key setup is very enlightening. It’s shame it takes quite a bit of gear to do. People often criticize the prevalence of low key in the Tech/gear RUclips space but often it’s the most cost effective setup for video lighting for new and smaller channels

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 года назад +1

      Yes and no. More lights usually do cost less money, but I’ve seen more than a few channels where the single key light alone is worth almost as much as my entire setup 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Thank you🧡. How do you think is it a good way to get a COB light like yours, but with more silent fan, for a working computer place - I teach students online. Or it is too bright and a daylight temperature is not an ideal for constant daily activity? I actually would like to have a good light with a softbox instead of a LED panels, just not sure is this a good variant. One LED panel I already have so looking for a good key light. Also this is for lightning me, sitting at a computer, and a background, no physical boards and so on.

    I would love to know the dimensions of your office and layout of your setup.
    I have a large glass whiteboard that is a pain in the ass with light reflections if you have any tips on getting rid of that??

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 года назад

      The room is about 12’ x 12’ and me desks are 6’ long. The drum set is too big 😃
      As for the whiteboard, removing reflection will likely have to do with experimenting in the position of your light and camera. If you search up some videos about removing glare in people’s glasses, I bet similar techniques would apply 👍

    Why DO led lights flicker?? Nice video

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 года назад

      This might not be the perfect explanation, but it's related to the cycling of electricity. It usually happens so fast that your eyes wont notice it, but a camera can pick it up (depending on shutter speed, frame rate, etc). Dedicated video lights account for this and are designed to prevent flicker.

      Yes! I reported this to RUclips and they're looking into it. It wasn't there when the video was uploaded, but started later. I've also seen it on a few other channels, so I'm guessing it's a RUclips issue and not a "me" issue.
