Prince wrote slave on his face because he was fighting for the rights of his masters. When he was fighting against warner bros it opened up the doors for other real artists to fight & own their masters. When you see content creators & artists today fighting for ownership of their creations it's because of Prince. DMX, Alicia Keys, Nas, PINK & many other artists have spoken about Prince warning & teaching them about how record labels are robbing their hard work. Prince changed his name to a symbol because the record labels at that time owned his giving birth name "Prince" There is no one greater than this man!

Since I requested it, here are some answers to your questions. This was video as performed and recorded at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota which is a suburb 20 minutes west of Minneapolis. He lived and worked out of this studio. the Slave engraving on his face was his ongoing battle with Warner Bros, who produced him early on, for the rights to his masters or original recordings. Prince was one of the first artists to fight for artists rights against the music industry. A lot of popular aritats now, Alicia Keys, Lenny Krazitz, Jay-Z, Beyonce, credit Prince for this. The sparkle of snow you mention is gold flake. I know all of this because I am a native of Minneapolis and was there during the recording. GREAT WORK as always B!

And the symbol was basically a way for him to get out of his contract with Warner Bros. Although he would say it his Gemini spirit that led him to the symbol.

IIRC Prince had "slave" on his cheek because he was in a contract dispute with his record label, and they were forcing him to record for them when he wanted to leave. "Slave" was his way of signalling his displeasure without breaking his NDA. This was also the reason he changed his name to that symbol you see on stage, which was first used on the album before the dispute and was known as the "Love Symbol". It was indeed a mixture of the male and female symbols, however, it had no vocal representation (i.e. you couldn't say it out loud), so everyone had to call him "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince" on the radio. The phrase "the artist formerly know as " subsequently entered the language (we'd call a 'meme' today) as a way of being sarcastic about someone being pretentious and "arty", because nobody knew about the behind-the-scene contract dispute at the time and thought he was just being 'up himself'.

A little more to the story. In his contract with Warner if he released any albums as "Prince" the label would gain financially. If he released music under the moniker of "The Artist Formerly Known As" he didn't owe them a cent. This is when he started Paisley Park Records , his own label. He did The Artist move for the duration of his contract with Warner. When the contract was about to expire Prince went into his vault of music and pulled 10 songs. He owed Warner one last album so he went to the vault and gave them the album From The Vault. After the contract was through he went back to being called Prince and kept releasing albums on his own label.

Was just going to say the same but @rogerdaly6326 held it down. It’s sad some of the younger generations consider this meme worthy. The man couldn’t even make music under his own given name and was literally a “slave” to the record label until he gave them Vault.

But, as my tastes matured and I took older of teens...Prince was my man...up there with legends of any genre. Still appreciate every talent Michael had and his body of contributions. But Prince was a one man musical tsunami of unequaled measure.
Great reaction BRITT, and fantastic recommendation from an honorable subscriber.

To answer your question the symbol is indeed a combination of the male and female signs and first appeared in 1982 on the 1999 Album artwork, might take you a moment to spot it cause the horn part of the Symbol wasn't added until 1992 when it was featured prominently on the album cover. It is generally referred to as the love symbol since it's meant to be male and female in spiritual union. The horn added in 1992 was meant to represent the horn the angels blow in the book of revelation in the bible, at least so I have read.
He had Slave on his face because he was in a rather bitter battle with Warner Brothers his original record company over the ownership of his master tapes. Writing Slave on his face was his public way of rebelling against them owning his music, he eventually won and got ownership of his master tapes. He changed his name to the "symbol" which had no pronunciation as a way to release new music without breaching his Warner Brothers contract. He fulfilled his contractual obligation to them with material he had previously recorded that was in his vault of immense unreleased material.
The Symbol guitar is indeed a fully functional real guitar he had custom made, he had several in different colors, the Cloud guitar from the Purple Rain era was also a custom made guitar btw.
Not that you asked but an interesting piece of info is all his clothes from 1984 on were custom designed and made for him! He had his own wardrobe department at Paisley Park his recording complex that was in the suburbs of Minneapolis.

I have a tat of the Prince symbol on my arm. It means something. The guy built an empire of music, was an icon, but always realized that cash wasn’t heaven.
He was a musical maniacal genius, but at the end of the day he just wanted to rise people up and drop their jaws (pdc). You get it. He was a rebel with extraordinary talent.

About the word ”slave” on his cheek: He was in open war with his record label regarding his contract. (It had to do with his non-freedom to release all the music he wanted to, but also the ownership of the end product). It manifested itself in several ways, one of which was his refusing to identify as Prince, but rather that novel symbol. Another was he wrote ”slave” on his face for a brief while, which as you can imagine drew both ire and ridicule. Media for years assumed he had lost his mind. But he was relentless and in the end won the battle. And subsequent generations of artists learnt a lot in the process. His first album after winning the battle was appropriately named "Emancipation".

Even at the Centre of Fire there is COLD
    All tha Glitters AIN'T GOLD
    Lyrics for you.
    [Verse 1: Prince]
    There's a mountain, and it's mighty high
You cannot see the top, unless you fly
And there's a molehill of proven ground
There ain't no where to go if you hang around
    [Chorus: Prince]
Everybody wants to sell what's already been sold
Everybody wants to tell what's already been told
What's the use of money if you ain't gonna break the mold?
Even at the center of fire, there is cold
    All that glitters ain't gold
    All that glitters ain't gold
    [Verse 2: Prince]
    There's an ocean of despair
    There are people livin' there
They're unhappy each and every day
But hell is not fashion so whatcha tryin' to say?
    [Chorus: Prince]
Everybody wants to sell what's already been sold
Everybody wants to tell what's already been told
What's the use of money if you ain't gonna break the mold?
Even at the center of fire, there is cold
All that glitters ain't gold, no no
All that glitters ain't gold, no no
    [Verse 3: Prince]
    There's a lady, 99 years old
If she led a good life, heaven takes her soul
Now that's a theory, and if you don't wanna know
Step aside and make a way for those who want to go
    [Chorus: Prince]
Everybody wants to sell what's already been sold (Sold)
Everybody wants to tell what's already been told (Told)
What's the use of bein' young if you ain't gonna get old? (Old)
Even at the center of fire, there is cold (Cold)
All that glitters (glitters) ain't gold, no, no, no
    No, no
All that glitters ain't gold (Hey, alright)
    All that glitters
    All that glitters
    All that glitters
    Ain't gold
    [Outro: Prince]
Na na na na na na na (Gold)
Na na na na na na na (Gold)
Na na na na na na na (Gold)
Na na na na na na na (Gold)
    Gold, gold, gold
All that glitters ain't gold, gold, gold
All that glitters ain't gold, gold, gold (Na na na na na na na)
All that glitters ain't gold, gold, gold (Na na na na na na na)
All that glitters ain't gold, oh
    Oh yeah
    1, 2--
    1, 2, 3, come on!
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na

Hi Britt. My goodness! You done it again! What a wonderful reaction to another song by Prince. I still miss him! He left us way too early! He was such an extraordinary, gifted musician. I love watching this performance of his. Thank you loads for reacting to it and reminding your viewing audience , once again, what an extraordinary musician he was! His legacy of music will last for decades to come, I'm sure of it.
Speaking of performances, have you of heard of Alice Fredenham? Not too long ago I watched her perform Prince’s “Why Don’t You Call Me Anymore". I listened to it, because it was a song written by Prince. There’s also a youtube video of him performing it. This performance by Alice just blew me away! Her claim to fame, from what I understand, came with her performance of “My Funny Valentine” on BGT back in 2013. That being said, Britt would you mind if I ask you to react to her performance of “Why You Don’t Call? It’s a black & white live studio video performance. I bet you will thoroughly enjoy it. Alice had such a soulful, sultry voice, its just so mesmerizing to say the least. And I'm sure if Prince were still alive he would have greatly appreciated her signing his song. Cheers…. and Happy New Year!

Slave on his face came from a Contract dispute with Warner Bros. That also began the name change to the artist so they couldn't profit off the new name. He released Emancipation, a 3 album set of not to be released vaulted rejects, to fulfill his contract. The symbol was a combination of both genders adding to the androgynous mystique.

In 1992, after being under Warner Bro Records for 15 years, Prince renewed his recording contract for a reported $100 million dollars. In the deal it meant that the next 5 albums he released would’ve had to sell at least 5 million copies each. What he didn’t realize is that part of the terms was that he would no longer own the rights to the master recordings of his previous works which meant that he if he ever wanted to make money off of his own work he wouldn’t be making any profit. Warner Bros would be making that money off of him. They basically owned Prince as if he were a “slave” hence the word scrawled on his cheek. In 1993 as a business move he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol that became his trademark. The media had a difficult time trying to find a pronounceable way to address him without calling him “Prince” so the media dubbed him “The Artist Formerly Known As Prince”. In 2000, he resumed using his original name once his publishing contract expired.

I learned of Prince when I was 17, with his - let's say provocative, album Dirty Minds. Particularly Darling Nikki. He released Controversy just as I graduated and moved to Denver for school. I found out he was coming to town and had to buy tickets to bribe people to go (he was relatively unknown there). It was a small venue and not full. All the people with me fell hard for his charm. That was 1982, and he only got better in time. Next time I saw him was in a jam-packed Madison Square Garden in 86. He was a phenomenal performer.

Slave on his face had to do with a dispute he had with his record label Wanner Brother's and yes that symbol represents the female & male and is reffed to as the love symbol ❤

You really need to react to a combination of 2 PDC members, with Tom Jones covering Prince's 'Kiss'. Been a Prince fan my whole life but was amazed that imho the TJ cover was better than the original. perhaps watch both back to back and see what you think.

Your right the symbol is male & female merged together. He called it an unpernouncable symbol.

Britt, in my opinion, he had slave on his cheek because of his management contract with Warner Bros. WB basically took the lions share of the profits and royalties so Prince change his name when he got out of the contract and managed himself. When he died his estate was worth approximately 11 to 15 million. His home is located in Chaska Minnesota where tours are being offered to fans...

Prince wrote “Slave” in his face because Warners Bros own the rights to the Master Copies of all of his music and he wanted those rights back. George Michaels had a similar battle with Sony back then too and lost that battle. Taylor Swift’s re-released Taylor’s Versions of her back catalogue has been her response to the six albums of her early years that she did not own the Masters of. Prince attempted to re-record all of his albums in the hopes of achieving what Taylor has done now some 25 years later. Prince abandoned that idea. I believe Taylor has only been able to do her re-recorded albums because she only has six to do. Prince had too many to redo when he tried that. Each of Taylor’s re-recorded albums have been blockbusters in sales. While it seems for now that Taylor is the number one artist the music industry is changing the rules to prevent new artists from be able to re-record their music for years. “Record Labels Trying to Prevent ‘Taylor’s Version’ Re-Recording Scenarios With New Artists, Lawyers Reveal” was a story out a few months ago. As Prince said, he did not like contracts, because they were a Con.

The pity is that you are so out of what it what is was happening on those days... SLAVE on his cheeck was about the contract he has with the record company at that moment, that because beceme The Symbol or Victor or Artist, to avoid the record company for his propososals, this song song is better to hear the message than the performance that is always to be great in every Prince's tune you will hear (mostly)

Reacting to a video is one thing, BUT stopping, pauslng, interjecting seemingly every 5 seconds is something TOTALLY different. Seems you like hearing yourself talk. IMO.

Advice: Don't pause so much. It ruins the flow of excellent songs like this. Good songs have a certain cadence and tempo. Pausing it too much hurts the reaction.
