Prince Super Bowl half time show is an absolute master piece. That is the best halftime show ever and it’s some of his best work. Towards the end it’s almost emotional. The backstory is amazing as well. Watch the whole thing. Don’t do part of it. It’s all or nothing. It builds. There’s never been another halftime show like it. When he was young his live shows were ridiculous. The dude could dance and he was all over the stage. His library of works could keep you busy for years. He’s changed a lot over the years. He’s always been cutting edge.
Amazing performance! I love the little documentary from the point of view of the organizers. They called him before the show to see if he knew that it was raining and if it would be a problem. He asked if they could make it rain harder. What a showman. Epic. He even showcased other people's music. The GOAT

Her boyfriend (masculine protector and provider) but also her girlfriend (tender and someone she could pour out her heart to and who she could trust with anything - even things women only tell other women

Prince did ballet at a school in Minneapolis and donated money and put on a concert on to raise money, saving the school. He also wrote a ballet and gave it to the school. They travelled the world performing the ballet and were very successful.
The fact that he could write a song that can be viewed in so many perspectives shows his talent but i do believe he was writing a special lady to him

This is from a concert movie named after his double album called "Sign O The Times" in 1987. Prince is a Gemini so male and female is who he is! You need to watch the whole movie it was great. You know he was competing with Michael Jackson who had released the album "Bad" i liked both albums. I loved both Michael and Prince. Prince is more musician than Michael. But they were Both Great. I was in High School when this came. You know they were both born in the midwest to domineering Musician Fathers! Michael was a child star that developed into a mega superstar! I just amired Prince a little more because of his musicianship and how he was with the women. But i cant understand what Michael went through being the bread winner in your family at such a young Age. It affect him a lot. They were both great artist that admired each other a lot! I was lucky to grow up with both these great entertainers that were influnced by James Brown. Who did a lot of splits in his career. You should check out James Brown doing "Night Train" on The T A M M I Show in the 1960's. Helleva a performance!!!!!

Fun reaction! Cat Glover was dancer and background vocalist on Prince's Sign of the Times and LoveSexy tours. This was a video clip from the concert movie for Sign of the Times, which I highly recommend. He wears the white fur coat on and off through both tours. Prince is not formerly trained as a dancer, it's all him! ☮️💜🎶☔

Amazing song and performance. As others have said, it is from a male perspective. He wants that closeness to his woman that she has with her female friends. Also he did have some classical dance training. Whilst he was at school he practiced classical dance with the Minnesota Dance Theatre. He played at benefit concert in 1983 for them when they were in financial difficulties. That’s the concert he debuted many of the tracks from Purple Rain. Also during the lead up to Purple Rain the movie, himself and the cast took dancing lessons. Having said that though, I think he was a natural dancer. He’s got the perfect dancers body. His movements are so fluid. Despite his height, his body was always muscular and toned. He was athletic. He played basketball like a pro! I love his dancing. The moves were all his own, not highly choreographed. He just moved the way the music made him feel 💜 Finally that black cut out jumpsuit and waist chains are sexy as hell!! Great reaction. The book is really good! It’s a memoir by Nichole Perkins, a writer who was on the Thirst Aid podcast and also did one on Prince - The Prince Mixtape. She talks to a lot of people who worked with him, so if you want that insight, highly recommend.
My take on the song is that it’s sung to a girl who said she didn’t want to be his girlfriend, so he’s singing that what if I was your girlfriend instead? But it’s Prince, so it’s kinda filthy [complimentary].

That is clip of A concert movie,, called “sign of the Times“. The movie played in a number of theaters,, for a few weeks back in the late 80s. I saw sign of the Times in theaters over a dozen times. The concert movie was brilliant. I highly suggest you watch it. He is singing from his own perspective. In the song he is trying to get his girlfriend (or a girl) to be as open with him,, as she would be (or as he imagined she would be) with one of her girlfriends. Such a well written song. And as always,, Prince takes the song and his performance to the next level live. But the recording of “if I was your girlfriend” on The sign of the Times album,, is brilliant. You should do a reaction to Prince’s “Free” from “1999” It’s from the time when the USSR was still an existential threat. It still gives me goosebumps. It’s sorta anti-woke in that it focuses on how America was truly free 🇺🇸 and no sense of victimhood. It’s intense but fundamentally patriotic and optimistic - especially when his vocals break away from the music in the finale.

This song is in my Prince top 5 for sure. You trying to figure out the perspective is one of the reasons why. Technically, he’s singing it from the male perspective to his girlfriend because he wishes he could have the relationship she has with her best girlfriend (the girlfriend was Susannah Melvoin and her best friend is her twin sister Wendy who played guitar in Prince’s band The Revolution). It’s really a song about being jealous camouflaged as a love song. But, I’ve always thought Prince wanted this song to be interpreted by the listener. On the album, it’s sung in his “Camille” voice (a sped up version of his voice which sounds much more feminine). Also, he was really into Kate Bush and loved the song “Running Up that Hill” and the lyrics about making a deal with God to get him to swap Kate’s place with her man. He was inspired by that song when writing this one. So, all those questions you had about what it all meant were right on.

Now, about his pirouette. Prince was a great dancer but was in so much pain as he got older that he couldn’t really go all out anymore. I read a quote from Susannah Melvoin about him asking her to teach him how to do a pirouette when they were walking around one night. Clearly, she taught him very well. 💜💜💜

My favorite of his live performances and I can’t put my finger on it. . . Just . . . Sigh.
He was very short - his dancing was partly better than JB (James had more rhythm interaction) - Prince had a special Electro dance style - relatives were Morris Day / The Time (you see them in the Purple Rain movie). His band members were only temporary partners … Later he played with a lot of different musicians at his mansion (it was a come and go).

Remember when TLC did a remake of this song back in 95' on the Crazy, Sexy, Cool, CD, they did a good job but, this is Prince's song, and he sang it to perfection.

Yeah Prince was a great dancer. Very high energy performer. His agility was lost from aging and wearing high heels. Broke his body down. Prince did take dance lessons along with cast when filming Purple Rain.

There's a lot going on in the song, but basically he's craving a greater level of intimacy with his female partner that females friends often have with each other ("help you pick out your clothes", "go to the movies and cry together", etc)
