A lot of people who have just heard the most popular radio songs have no idea of the complete artist he was in every aspect. His first album he was basically out of his teens in the late 70s and wrote all the music, wrote all the songs, played most of the instruments, produced the album which at that time was pretty much unheard of and he had to fight with the record labels to allow him to do this because he wanted total control over his created content. That fight went on for a long time and there are a lot of current artists who give him a lot of credit for fighting for what they have now, content control.

Yes hes an artist 1999 album is his work .Girl I grew up on Prince and Michael.Graduated in 84 and saw the Purple Rain tour. Best concert I ever went to and I saw alot of all time great artists. It was just operetic and mysterious funky and masterful. I love them both. But Prince goes sooo much deeper and broader in range of artistry. He danced and mastered the instruments, designed all their stage clothes and personas..had a wardrobe shop with massive rolls of fantastic fabrics he'd order then collage womens fashion magazine outfits and choose the colors and fabrics and had his clothes custom made. Even his silk boxers! Anything he didnt like he gave the girls!! He did concept art, directed his own videos sometimes. Designed sets. Did his own hair and makeup sometimes. He had helpers but they admitted he could do it just as well or better if need be. a freaking maestro of everything. A master the likes of which we will never see again . That said Prince said Michael was a genius and had mad respect for him despite the MJ vs Prince rivalry. They sent each other unreleased music in the mail to review. Prince could be a little mean to Michael but it was really just a little competetive doing the dozens with Michael. You have years of music to take in. Michael was just as much an artist. He could beat box all the instrumentation of a song ! And my God his dancing and voice. It was amazing to see their dizzying height of fame and artistry in teal time. Bummed I never saw Michael live. Prince was my first concert at 18 that I took myself too because he was forbidden until I left home! It was cool as a redheaded white girl to go to the middle of Ky and see the most diverse crowd of all time screaming their heads off for Prince! And everyone had their version of " Prince Style". It was major. From 79 to 88 Prince and MJ were bigger than anyone it seemed. And I love all their stuff. So much music still unreleased too. Their bootlegs blow the socks of the so called big hits of today. Staying power.

So, as a fan since '82, let me say it like this: on his jazz-sounding songs, his voice IS an additonal instrument the way he uses it. He dips it, sprawls it, elevates it, even scats it in some songs......effortlessly. Once in 500 year-type total talent. More examples of his range:
    1) Adore (as stated by others)
    2) Damn U
    3) Dark
    4) Insatiable
    5) Pink Cashmere (unreal 🎶)
    Enjoy...

And as a kid who grew up loving both Prince and MJ.... I swayed way more heavily towards Prince, but I never saw them as either/or. Michael was more of an orchestrator. He didn't play a bunch of instruments, but he heard it all in his head and brought people around him like Quincy Jones or Teddy Riley to figure out how to make those happen. Prince I saw more as a musician who was always honing his craft. He was far more prolific. Michael a lot of times swayed towards making music for the masses to love. Prince sometimes made music for himself and expected others would come around to it. In any case, enjoy the journey!

The only comparison to the two is they are carbon copies of Little Richard and James Brown.

That said, Prince done ruined me for EVERY OTHER ARTIST when I was only the tender age of 12 back in the early 80s, and I've never looked back. Just nobody can do it for me like Prince did, and his music still does for me. We also went to the Jackson reunion tour concert, and well Michael is Michael - unreal performance. I fell out with the PDC comment. We went to a Teddy Pendergrass concert in a small venue where so many panties were thrown on stage the security has to pick them up so he would slip. I thought my wife was about to throw hers.. Michael Jackson wrote his music. There's even videos where he talks about where he was when he wrote Billie Jean. Prince played more instrument since I don't even think MJ played any instruments. I personally feel like Prince was all around more prolific and long-lasting but Michael Jackson is probably the more popular worldwide. I was a kid when MJ passed and I just remember all those people across the world mourning. When Prince passed I didn't see this as much. I prefer Prince over MJ. I even remember people selling all kinds of Michael Jackson t-shirts and hats when he passed. Something about MJ that just made him more worldly popular. I have always preferred Prince

His girlfriend was there in the back with the flower in her hair during this performance. Imagine listening 2 him sing a song like this.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a household with both and in all honesty I appreciate Prince so much because as an instrumentalist he was a genius! He could actually play every single instrument it was mind-boggling how brilliant this man was it's such a shame that we lost him.

MJ was great but Prince was at another level. Show me one MJ love song ? Show me MJ playing live without lip syncing. MJ is a great boy band dancer lol. Compare Super Bowl half time shows. Enough said. MJ can be called the king of pop but Prince is a musical genius. He does it all and better than anybody has or will.

I read somewhere once that Prince was the only man who was prettier than your woman, but could still take her home. We absolutely loved him when we were growing up! He was so revolutionary and FINE!

Betcha By Golly Wow Is a really. Good? Song where you can hear both his natural voice and his lot of it plus it's a really good song.
My favorite song from him it's a tie between Diamonds And Pearls and Most Beautiful Girl In The World.
Adore is another good Prince song.

You should’ve been in a small bar in the Twin Cities in the 80s. Word would get around that Prince might be coming in that night. This video is a lot like he played. Stuff you might’ve never heard internationally. He was incredible.

Enjoyed your reaction! For me, Prince's amazing singing voice is best showcased on the RUclips videos that show him rehearsing his song "The Ladder." Give that one a try!

If anyone has ever heard "the most beautiful girl in the world" by Prince it would be no contest between MJ and Him in terms of vocals hands down the vocal ranges he goes in and out of is something to really witness. Check it out

this was 2007. MJ does not come close to Prince as an artist. Prince had something to do with around 100 albums, half of those were his own, the rest he either wrote or produced , or both. a deep dive into Prince would take you 10 years.....30 odd years of touring live. it's almost too much to process what Prince was. 5000 unreleased songs in his vault,

Welcome to a bottomless rabbit hole! This man had soooo much talent it was unreal, and like you say it just flowed from him like water. He has so many eras to explore as he was ever changing. Vocally I would try this one next. It moves me to tears sometimes. It's from the Purple Rain movie so it may be missing a little context from the different shots, but the song... wow! ruclips.net/video/Ti0JAumfDME/видео.html
