holy shit you just earned a subscribe from me. I've been suffering from huge impulsive GAS (Gear acquisition syndrome) ever since i got the r5 on my hands, been thinking about the V+, cages, gimbals, Cards, new laptop, UWA L lens, probably sell it for the r5c. But you just made me breathe a little bit easier. So yeah, i haven't had a demanding shoot that abused the r5's thermal threshold yet but hopefully this doesn't happen to me anytime soon. I think i'll stay with my barebones r5 setup for a year or two and focus on setting myself up a better Editing workflow instead.
Editing workflow is so important and often overlooked! I suffer from GAS too, so every now and then, it's good to do a sanity check. Thanks for the sub and comment!
Bro the peace of mind u get is 1000% solid! I love my V+ I have a setup for unlimited power On the R5 and now the monitor gives you workable files and 8k pro res raw
Totally get you. And I agree that the peace of mind is worth something, but to me, not sure it's worth that much unless I need a long shoot with 8k raw. Hopefully by then the price drops, or blackmagic gives me a less expensive alternative.
I’m not interested on the ninja v+ at all, it’s enough what I can get from the body itself and the overheating never was a problem for me. Great video!
Lol. I have R5 and Atomos V+ and overheating was not even on my list when I was making a decision to purchase it. If you are buying this device because of overheating this is not for you.
How does the export look like, when using Canon's 8K 12bit raw video as a source, compared to Prores Raw? And what settings do you use for exporting 8K video?
When it comes to Prores Raw vs the 8K Raw from the camera, I'd still believe the Camera would produce a better 8K Raw. Prores raw from the Atomos is only 10 bit color, vs the 8K Raw from the R5, which is 12 bit. When I personally export 8K video, I output h.264 130Mbps, at the least, depending on the amount of movement for RUclips. If for viewing locally, I'd export similar bitrate, but h.265, since it would be high quality.
@@magnus547 that makes sense. What's the typical export time when using 8K Raw captured internally as a source? I tried to export a 10 seconds clip with minimum editing (just color grading) as a test and it took about 15 minutes. The GPU utilization was pretty low, however the GPU memory was maxed out (8Gb on a 3060Ti). I don't have any issue with any other kind of video source..
@@vasiliss3597 Working with and exporting 8K Raw is very RAM intensive, so I'm not surprised on what you were seeing. It all depends on specs and settings used for determining length of time. But for my machine, when exporting a 12 minute 8K clip from Raw on youtube, (3070TI 8GB, AMD Ryzen 9 3900x processor, 64GB Ram, footage on SSD), it took about 2 hours.
@@magnus547 I figure out, kind of, what the issue was. Apparently, I've been playing around and changing both Colorspace and Gamma to BT.709 had a huge negative impact to the performance for some reason. Using something different, like BT.709/ Clog3 made everything been processed/exported a lot faster
Did I hear correctly that you’re telling people not to buy the Ninja V+ but haven’t used it yourself? The most obvious advantage is the ability to record in ProRes Raw in addition to a larger and brighter screen, cheaper storage, better battery life and elimination of overheating. And most cameras can’t record internally at their highest quality settings
I agree with everything you said, and I'm not recommending against it if it suits your workflow. Those are all great advantages. All I'm saying is for me personally, right now, there's no need for one. That may change. Thanks for the comment!
@pail dewar, the benefits you mentioned can be done with Ninja 5 for ~1/3 of the price, especially if you already own one like I do, then the upgrade is not so attractive. If the Ninja 5+ can shoot 4K120 with the R5 then that gets me interested. Right now, I shoot oversampled 5.1K mode with a Metabones speedbooster with EF lenses for unlimited recording internally. And for 4KHQ, I use the Tilta fan and can get more than double the recording time Canon allows and the recovery time is fast. So the Ninja 5+ becomes a nice to have at this point for me.
Best reason to go with the r5 + Ninja v+ - the ability to take ProRes right to the timeline in FinalCut and Premiere without transcoding. H.265 is choppy on the timeline without transcoding without a Mac with an M1.
I had never planned to buy a Ninja V but Atomos had a good sale during the holidays. I am hoping Atomos will do the same thing with the Ninja V+ this holiday season.
The V+ is way overpriced and not interesting right now unless you really need to shoot 8k long time. Better wait until the price comes down considerably.
what id like to know in considering buying it is when filming an all day shoot, how long does the battery last? i believe its the 'atomos power kit' would i need 2 or 3 or is 1 enough?
Considering how good 4k HQ & 8K internal RAW are on the R5, do you really need to upgrade? Another point is R5 only has micro-HDMI out, not a dealbreaker to everyone but there certainly is long-term durability issues isnt there?
The ability to record ProRes Raw vs the internal Raw on the R5 makes raw video a ton easier to edit, because ProRes Raw is so edit friendly. This will help lots of people who just want a fast editing workflow with a high resolution Raw codec. It's not much of a problem for me, but for many others, it is an issue. The Micro HDMI out thing bothers many people, but doesn't bother me and never has. I've been using that type of port on my Samsung NX1 for 5 or so years on professional shoots and nothing bad ever happened. Not really a big deal for me, but, again, it's a big deal for many. So is it a long-term durability issue? Probably. But I wouldn't personally know.
Yeah, that price tag is ridiculous...But part of me is now starting to re-think it. If for nothing else, it's just for the ability to save my files on an SSD, instead of CFExpress type B. Still don't NEED it though. :-)
hey I have a quick question, r5 can do 8k30p raw 12bit internal, but once you pair it wit the ninja v+ recorder, it can only record 8k30p raw 10bit. am i right?
That is correct. The Atomos does 10 Bit Raw in 8K, and 12 Bit Raw in 5K. The R5, like you said, does 12 bit Raw internal. I would imagine this is because the bandwidth of the HDMI cable limits how much color information can be transmitted. Would you be willing to sacrifice 12 bit raw for faster editing?
You mentioned that you have no issues editing with your system having a 3070Ti, AMD 3900X and 64GB of RAM. Can you actually even playback the 8K video properly with that system? I got a 3060Ti, AMD 3700X and 64GB of RAM and playback is hell, not to mention editing, which just can't even be done without proxies..
Yes, I can playback the video. When I'm talking about it, I showed a clip of me smoothly scrubbing 8k video. Not an issue, but maybe this will help you: Make sure playback is at least a 1/4 of the resolution ì the preview monitor, if not more. (You don't need full 8k on tiny preview monitor) Also, I edit using a Samsung T7 SSD connected via usb-c. Hard drive speed really matters as well. Curious to hear from you if any of that helps you out.
Moving the video to my NVMe drive and using Windows "Movies&TV" video player actually did the trick for the playback. I noticed on the resource monitor that this program does use the GPU (and quite heavily) during the playback, while MMC (media player) that I used before relies just on the CPU, which maxes out and results in a pretty poor video experience for 8K playback. Now I'm quite curious why MMC would use CPU for decoding..
Great question: More has to be asked when it comes to using the ninja V, such as the camera that you're using. Also, how you use it For example, there are cameras that can successfully record 4K 120 in realtime. So it depends on you. However, without knowing this information, I would say that it IS worth getting the V+. Why? Because it's a newer product with better processing internals, which means that firmware updates be improve the usability on the V+, that the V might not get.
I’ve purchased the v+ for my R5 and have regrets. It does not record 120 frames and normal 8K. You can only record 8k raw.. if you’re considering to buy the V+ you are better off getting the Ninja V instead.
I bet that's thanks to the fact that the hdmi port on the R5 is not designed to output 8k video. But because raw is just data, you're able to transmit information that can be read by the ninja as 8k raw. I want sure about the 120fps, so thanks for confirming for me. If you want to record to your ninja a 120fps video, just record the video internally on the R5, then play it back for your ninja and record at 30 fps 4k. It takes longer, but at least you won't have to transcode later.
I have the Ninja V which I bought on sale for $500 and I am very happy with it for some use. Namely 4KHQ 1 hour shooitng for events. I have have 2TB CF Express B cards which are less bulky to use for short shooting, like 60 second clips. I would mine owning the Ninja V+ for 8K RAW for long recording., It is $1500 and I already have the Ninja V. So paying $1500 more for this Ninja V+ is not that attractive to me. The price has to come down since the Ninja is bulky and limited in utility in many of my shoots. The Delkin 2TB card is much, more useful and was on sales for $550 at B&H Photo on sale. 2TB rocks in my usage but the Ninja V+ use cases are not a priority for me. I can use Prores format on the cheap Ninja V with 4KHQ along with my sweet 8TB SSD compatible with the Ninja recorder. I am not missing out anything and can afford to wait for the Ninja V+ price come down or someone else comes out with a cheaper recorder for 8K. I do think the Ninja V+ is that much more expensive to make than the classic Ninja V but the list prices are way different.
The $1500 Ninja V+ price is my issue since I have more substantial for a second 4K camera body like the EOS R than I do for a Ninja V. I paid around $1500 for my EOS R that use as a camera for two camera shoots which is a capability more frequntly valuable for me than is long term recording at 8K RAWwhich may nice but is not at all really essential in my world. I think Ninja V+ may be $799 in couple of year and then at a low price I may consider it but I have no urgent need. It is nice that it available now for just more money but the need has to come first before I buy or rent one.
While I bought the Ninja V last year on Black Friday for $500 I saw today the Ninja V+ is marked down today to $999 on my B&H payboo account with sale tax free. I already have a couple of 8TB SSDs and bunch of Sony batteries so I am good to go with the necessary accessories for some serious 8K long recording. I do have at 2TB CFE card for shooting 8K internally shorter clip. I like internal card recording too because is rugged, compact and easy to carry. Not everything will fit a 2TB card though. But for long session Pro Raw and and using the SSDs from the Atomos to the computer to save transfer time. Maybe at the $999 sales price for Christmas the Ninja V+ will look better to you than it did at $1499. Everyone has their price where it may make sense.
