    A emergency key on each of the machines is a good idea for those working in the middle of nowhere. A combination box attached in a spot you can access like inside an unlocked access panel would let you still run the equipment even if you lose the main keys and in an emergency someone else can bring a machine if it is needed like to recover the tractor or mini if you do end up getting one of them stuck.
    Same idea as putting a bigger key lock box inside the shipping container for all the equipment and the truck.
    In getting ready for winter a 6 way blade that can do an offset can be a big help to keep the road in clear of snow even if you are mostly using the plow to clear it as the blade with the offset can be used to push the snowbanks back with the tractor not at risk of sliding off the road. Pushing back the snow when it build up will give you more room to pile up snow without needing to drive insanely fast to throw the snow off the plow to get over the banked snow.

      @David Hale This is true. One channel I follow the poor (single mother of an autistic toddler) lady gets a lot of hate, phone calls and even on her doorstep (requiring her to move). Another channel only posted the part of IN they lived, and had some one show up on their door while they were out of the home. It's scary. I'm sure 99.9% of Al's subscribers would be perfectly okay to know where he is at, but there is the small percent who could be dangerous, especially for his wife & daughter.

    That is awesome that you are building your own dock! One advice I have though it to change out the blue barrels for actually square dock floats. They will last longer, be more stable walking on and those blue barrels have a potential of coming part from the dock itself within a few years depending on weather (ice build up, etc). I work for a dock company which is why I am giving the suggestion. Still super cool to see people taking the time to build their dock!

    Try a 8” Fernco Coulping….it’s a Rubber coupling with stainless steel bands…get a piece of 8” sch 40 pvc pipe the length you want…connect the two with the coupling and your done…local plumbing supply company should have everything you need

    • @madsciencegary3830
      @madsciencegary3830 3 года назад +6

      Added benefit is you could raise the pond by a few inches at a time by starting with the coupling low and a 4-5" piece of solid PVC pipe tight down against the existing pipe with most of the rubber coupling on metal pipe, then if you still want it higher, loosen the rubber coupling bottom clamp and raise it up a couple inches and re-tighten that lower clamp. I really don't believe you want to raise the pond a foot, but perhaps you are right; just try raising it a smaller amount first and let it set at each height for a week before doing more until you are sure. I know you could do the opposite by using too high a pipe and cutting it down, but then you risk compromising the dam or killing the trees along the edge before you realize it's too high.

    • @Og-Judy
      @Og-Judy 3 года назад +7

      I'd get a DNR hydrology person to give some feedback. If you raise the pond too much, you may cause flooding when there's heavy rains. We've all seen the news reports in Europe what damage happens when bodies of water top their banks. Flash flooding is destructive when it has nowhere to safely runoff.

    • @unti419
      @unti419 3 года назад +2

      I was going to suggest the same thing. The ones I found were rated for both PVC and cast iron piping and were less than $30. He will need to connect a short sleeve or a ring on top to keep water pressure from collapsing the Fernco over time. We already know how he understands water pressure. He won't listen.

  • @jerrym1240
    @jerrym1240 3 года назад +1

    Al, you work so hard on your road, but there is no crown or ditches to allow the run off to escape. If you can adjust the box spreader to off-set so one side barely touches and goes deeper towards the end to create a crown. No tires will normally run down the middle, but its important to get the water off the road and into a drainage ditch. Annoying as they are, water breaks serve a very good purpose.

    I think I've seen people making these before and use some nylon net to hold the barrels in place should anything knock into them. It's probably necessary on a big lake or the sea -you may not need it. They may be worth fitting to avoid having to do this later. I've said before, I've heard pockethole screwed wood is stronger because you're not screwing into the end grain - lets hope it holds out for you!

    Put a little wood ladder attached to the dock so a person can more easily get up out of the water. Not only more fun, but an important safety feature in the chance of an accidental swim by smaller persons.

    There may be valid and important reason for the standpipe being located at its current height. The space you intend to fill with more water may be there to catch runoff from heavy rains.

      I believe it provides a buffer so the pond will have capacity to.hold the short term gain (from a good rain)and then meter it out. If Al removes this buffer then when it overflows it will possibly breach the dam. Once the dam is breached then erosion will exacerbate the rate of discharge and in a extreme case drain the pond. I’d not mess with this!

    • @darlaherbst5929
      @darlaherbst5929 3 года назад +2

      Why are you guys looking at the "extremes" of what might happen? There has to be a "very doable midpoint", that will create a bigger and better pond without any flooding issues! Lol...the pond won't drain out, it has a couple springs that continually fill it! If the remote chance of flooding does occur, do you really think that Al would let any erosion occur!

I’m guessing that once you enter your drive that we would come to the pond site first and that would be on your left. Continuing on a considerable distance you enter the big clearing with the water source to your right. No idea where the pesky beaver site is. Help us out buddy

    Appendix.. That's a plastic pipe plug not a pot and its ill advised to raise the water level in the pond more than few inches since the embankments aren't that high in the first place. Plus the trees/plants on the banks will die being inundated by higher levels as they grew there at its current height should be considered as well...

      To Brent P. Played the N Card quite fast didn't you but owing land doesn't mean there aren't rules especially about Water and there far from being arbitrary. Many have found out that Water that crosses their property can't be diverted, held by a dam, and most important used as a sewer for what ever you throw into it doesn't belong to them. Indeed more than once land owners have been fined/jailed because sine they didn't follow the rules and Raparian Rights are just as enforceable even when it comes to even a State/County. Al should see if he's allowed to raise the water level since it's still a diversion as well as how much he can use since it flows off the property means he can't just take all of it letting others downstream get less. Sorry to pop your balloon but the rules about a Septic System and agricultural waste from animals are even more rigid since they cost lives when done wrong even off the grid. Indeed Private Lanfd is still in a County/Parish or under some Legal Entity and though in unincorporated areas the Law still applies on it and the few that are everywhere are about Water more than anything else.

    We built an 8x10 floating dock using styrofoam buoyancy billets which, if punctured, will never leak and fail like the drums will. Also, it rides lower than Al's. We've had it for about 5 years now without any problems. Al keeps saying "look at that view" but the view is not much when looking through the camera. I'm sure it must be pretty when looked at in person.

    I was wondering How you gonna fix barrels to deck?, Shouldnt 1st priority be building a barn for all the machines, and other items you will be putting on new site, Before winter sets in!!, could make a nice 1 near the trees,!! or get some 2 containers, spread them out like Diesel Creek has, and put a roof from 1 to the other, more important than building a Smoke house and Floating docks!!. hope all youre machines have Trackers on them. Thanks for the videos from UK.

  • @jacklabloom635

    Those barrels will not hold up over time. You’d be better off purchasing dock flotation made for that purpose. They come in varies sizes to support different weight docks. Four 4’ x 4’ x 12 inch dock flotation devices would easily support that dock with twenty people on it.

    Goooooood Evening Al , Gina & Olivia ,
    Oh man ! I have some toxic mosquitos ! I got some super size skeeter bites this evening. I'm wondering. Will you need to remove the floating decks from the pond for the winter ? I know that those cattails look cool. But , the dense root systems collect silt. Over time they will spread all the while collecting silt. Next thing you know , they have filled in the pond and no more pond !
    I once had a small backyard pond that I made. About 15' x 8" and I thought it looked nice with some cattails in it. Within about two years there was no pond. Only cattails. I'll tell you , it was a major job to get those cattails out of the pond.
