They were trying to rip off the dress shop. 500 is just the deposit. 11 hand made gowns would cost thousands. Good for the shop for standing up for themselves.

Tough shit for Lully. They were struggling anyway trying to get the money together so they hoped that by going with the tv crew that they could rip off the shop by claiming that in all of the commotion an envelope with £500 in was handed over and with so many people in there they hoped someone would bail them out.
I feel really sorry for the dressmaker and I bet she has learned from experience and no longer deals with travellers.
The best way is to say you take card payments only. Any dodgy cards will show up on the till, but after a bit of bluster and shouting they usually leave. They prefer to pay cash as it's not traceable.
